CD drive non responsive

Folks!
My cd Drive won't accept any cd's. When I try and insert the cd, it seems like there is a CD already in use. But in reality there is nothing in there.
Need some work done ASAP.
All suggestions are welcome

  • CD/DVD drive non responsive

    Hi, I'm having, what seems to be a very common problem, with my cd/dvd rw drive that came as standard with my hp pavilion elite desktop pc, albeit with a slight twist in comparison with others here.
    My dvd drive has functioned perfectly since i bought the system just over 5 months ago, today, for the first time i tried to burn a media dvd using windows dvd maker. half way through burning the disk the process stalled with an error message claiming the disk was corrupted and to insert another, healthy disk into the drive to continue burning, i chose to cancel the burning process thinking its was the windows dvd maker program. The disks are of high quality, not the cheap kind and i assumed micros**t was to blame. I thought little of it, these things happen but immediately afterwards I went to use the drive for its other intended purposes and it will not recognise any disks within the drive. Regardless of media or disk type.
    I've run through a dozen suggested fixes here and on other forum boards with no success, the PC recognises that the drive is there, both in the main system folder (my computer) in the device manager and in the bios. It doesn't seem to have lost the drive, it just isnt functioning. I've tried clearing the filters (appears i didnt have any) driver re-install with a clean reboot with no luck, I've also opened the case and done the wire juggle which unsurprisingly, didn't help. The drive drawer functions fine, the drive just doesnt read any disk i place inside of it.
    I place a cd/dvd in the drive and nothing happens. When i try to manually access the drive from my computer the dvd drawer ejects and i get a pop-up asking me to insert a disk, despite the fact there is already a disk inside. I've tried multiple dvds and cds and it does the same thing for each, nor can I get programs such as itunes or WMP to read from the drive, they all show the drive as being empty??
    I tried the hp diagnostic thing too but i couldn't get the program to test the drive properly on account it depended on the drive being able to read a disk from within the drive, which it stubbornly refuses to do, so i cant tell if the problem is hardware or software based? anyone had anything similar and if so were you able to repair the problem? Im at my wits end and quite frankly I'm disappointed, I've had compaq presarios and hp pavilions before and they've all been solid platforms but having such a problem after only 5 months has seriously damaged my opinion of hp.
    I should probably mention I've also tried using windows (of the colour 7) to diagnose the problem from the device's properties menu but windows is about as observant as an amnesiac chicken and repeatedly tells me the device is fine and dandy, go figure
    Erm apologies about the obscene length and labyrinthine, rambling nature of the post by the way... heh
    ANother edit, i should also mention i've tried the 8 step guide by raster blaster, with no success, alot of the steps don't seem to allow for a recognised drive that doesn't recognise a valid disk within it, if that makes sense. Even the windows diagnostic is skuppered before it can get going because it's convinced the drive is empty or the disk is incompatible regardless of how many disks i've tried in it.

    hi big_dave, thanx for the assistance,
    device driver re-install was one of the first things i tried and while it re-installs the drivers on start up, the problem persists. I also took your advice and tried to search for a firmware update, but couldnt find one for my drive, so im assuming (possibly incorrectly hehe) that my firmware is up-to-date.
    Just to clarify, the drive is recognised by windows and in the bios, I've tried using a command prompt from outside of windows and it recognises the drive but will not read any disks within it, i recieve the drive is not ready message, I've tried a driver re-install followed by a clean reboot. I've also tried the inbuilt win7 troubleshooter program but because the drive will not read from any disk i place into it, the troubleshooter doesn't even get anywhere, the tray ejects the disk and the trouble shooter just keeps telling me to insert a disk of a valid type, i've tried some dozen or so disks... sigh... I tried a system restore but then that didn't work and i also tried the hp diagnostic tool but i have a similar problem as with the win7 troubleshooter, the program attempts to run it's diagnostics but before it even gets anywhere the disk is ejected and the program tells me to insert a valid disk regadless of the fact i have tried numerous disks that correspond with the particular aspect of the drive im testing eg audio disks to test audio cd playback capability etc etc. I even opened the tower and tried disconnecting the drive at both the drive itself and the motherboard with no success. I haven't yet tried the CMOS switch thing but im not entirely sure what that is or what it does or if it would even help me (or make matters worse! lol)
    As I say my drivers and firmware seem up-to-date, i've done a full system scan for viruses and and i've checked the drive for any visible physical damage (for what that was worth) and could find none and the registry file contained no filters to delete, it was clean.
    Looking at this list im guessing my best bet is to replace the drive? A sore disappointment for such a recent purchase and if i thought it wouldn't take forever and a day to get a replacement from hp themselves i'd go about it.
    I cant help but feel angry that hp clearly has made so little effort to correct software and hardware issues with their products, not to mention the use of substandard parts in their machines, sure a dvd rw drive is pretty cheap to replace and takes little fuss to install but it makes me wonder what might fail next that wont be so cheap and convenient to replace.
    Still thnx for the advice Big_dave and good luck to anyone else having problems with hp dvd drives, may you meet with more success than I.

  • Powered USB hard drives non-responsive awaking from sleep

    I have an external powered USB drive connected to the 24" Cinema Display built-in hub on a 13" Macbook (early 2009). When the computer goes to sleep then wakes up, the external drive is unresponsive. This does not happen when the drive is directly connected to the laptop.
    I do not have a disconnect error upon wakeup and the computer still sees the drives connected. It just won't spool them up and make them accessible.
    Other non-powered items on the Cinema Display's hub wake up fine like card readers and USB Turbo 264 dongles.

    This seems a pretty close match for the issue I've seen with my 2009 13" MacBook Pro and 24" Cinema display. I thought the Performance Update 1.0 might have been intended to address this (described as 'addresses intermittent hard drive related pauses') but I've applied the update and am still seeing this issue.
    Obviously it can be worked around, but it would be great to be able to use the usb hub on the display for a backup drive.

  • DVD/CD Drive Non Responsive

    Suddenly the drive will not mount any cd or dvd inserted. If I use the System Disk and restart witht he c key held it will boot up.
    Repairing permissions does not help, but I did notice this /usr/bin/setregion modified and will not be repaired.
    Can this be the culprit?

    I also noticed that when I set the finder preferences to show cds on the desktop it shows my boot camp partition as a cd/dvd is that normal?

  • Cusrsor Freezes up and is non responsive- Solution?

    I am using a mouse with my newly purchase C2D MBP and still from time to time, getting the non responsive frozen cursor. As far as I can tell, there appears to be no rhyme or reason to this. This is my second computer. First there was an odd low pitch beeping sound coming from the left side near speaker as well as the non responsive frozen cursor. Exchanged the computer for exact same model I have now. No longer have the beep but noticing lately there is still the non responsive frozen cursor problem I had with the original one. The Apple solution as far as disabling track pad really has no relavelance to the problem I am experiencing with my computer as well as I see from others in this discussion. I'm not sure what to do at this point. Any suggestions?
    Macbook Pro C2D MBP   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    1. Try unplugging the mouse and plugging it back it when it freezes.
    2. Note the exact time if freezes and check your system logs in your Console application for clues.
    3. Boot from your system install DVD, play around with the mouse awhile and see if you can get it to freeze. This will help determine if it's software or hardware related.
    4. You could have some bad sectors on your hard drive. Back it up and do a "Zero all data" reformat. Then clone everything back.

  • Non responsive track pad

    3 year old mac book. Just repaired with new hard drive and battery. All was well until this morning. Trac pad non responsive. Moves a little bit, doesn't really track. Any ideas?

    I'm getting this too with a brand new MBP. Only seems to happen after sleep and connected to external Mouse/Keyboard. Anyone else finding this?

  • Illustrator CS5.1 Non Responsive

    Hello,
    Up until recently, Illustrator worked just fine. Now, between most actions (be it clicking, copying, etc) there will be a delay where the whole window will become non responsive. My mouse will go the loading wheel and the Windows Task Manager says Not Responding. Most times, if I wait 10_ seconds, it will allow to to proceed. Occasionally, it will completely lock up Illustrator and I must force close it.
    Between the moments it locks up, it runs just fine. Photoshop has not shown any problem at all, except when Illustrator locks up, it locks up as well in the background. Usually both programs are not open at the same time.
    I am working on a 64-bit Win7 with an Intel i7-3820. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Illustrator since the issue began but it has not helped.
    Thank you.

    Straight to the point: That's not AI. You have a driver or other tool on your system that runs amok or your operating system is running out of resources e.g. when re-organizing it's swap file and temp folders. Could also be issues with your network stuff. You need to check your device manager and do a little housekeeping on all fronts.

  • Pages is non-responsive when it opens

    Pages, version 5 is non-responsive whenever it opens. It's very frustrating as I have created several documents which I cannot access. Why is there no option to open these documents with the previous Pages' version? Everytime the application is force quit, I have a report sent to Apple. Why is there no update to correct this glaringly bad application?
    Shame on you, Apple!

    Update your operating system to 10.9.2, and Pages v5 to v5.1 in the App Store Updates section. Then use /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility to verify/repair the permissions on your boot drive. Do the first two sentences resolve your Pages v5 hanging issue?
    Pages v5 has had two updates (5.01, and 5.1) since last fall. Apple has suggested more to come, but they don't share their plans or schedules with this user to user support community.

    Where is your vault stored? Is it on a drive with the correct formatting - MacOS Extended (Journaled)?

  • IDVD becomes non responsive

    I am using iLife 06. I created a movie in iMovie. The movie is 75 minutes long. I then converted it to iDVD. When I click on the burn button in iDVD it starts with no problems. It goes through all the steps until the Burn Process. Then it does nothing. If I open Force Quit from the Apple menu it shows that iDVD is non-responsive. I am using an external hard drive as my internal hard drive is only 60GB. I have burned many DVD's but this is my first with this OS and this version of iLife. I have archived the project as a sugesstion from the help topic and I got the same result. All results in the Project Info are in the green. I also tried to burn in widescreen and standard and I got the same result. Any help in getting this resolved would be appreciated.

    It is probably not 'hanging'. Disregard any messages
    that iDVD is not responding. It is. Do not force
    quit.
    Encoding audio is the slowest part of rendering, and
    can take many hours. Great patience, even an
    intermittent alternative hobby, is called for.
    Wow. I thought the video would take the longest! And then once I thought there was a problem, I got all paranoid and kept checking it and I saw that the little burning icon wasn't spinning so I assumed it was stuck, which made me check the force quit thingy which then apparently lied to me!!! Before when I burned previous copies of this I just went away and didn't check it for a long time so I'm thinking that I never noticed it.
    Make sure no other application is running, make sure
    you have not set the hard disk to go to sleep and
    that the screen saver will not come on. Leave it
    overnight, or have a 36 hole game of golf.
    The screen saver did come on once so I wonder if that was an issue and I did figure out to stop it from putting itself to sleep... I have 158 GB of free space on the hard drive so I think i'm OK on space! I will try to set it up and LEAVE it alone -- in fact, I will leave the building for a while! You know when it was looking frozen to me it was very rarely making little tiny clicking sounds but so much less than when it was doing the audio that I thought it wasn't working right! That's what happens when we assume, I guess!
    Thanks so much for everyone's advice!

  • Canon pixma mg3510, plug in, push ON, green light comes on, ALL buttons non-responsive

    Tanner,
    Your Lombard can run a maximum of 512MB of RAM (2x256MB). The memory module for the top slot is standard height which is approximately 2.0"; the module for the lower (bottom) slot is low-profile, meaning 1.5" or less. The standard height module will only work in the top slot; the low-profile will work in either slot. Also, these 256MB modules are unique to the early iMac, Wallstreet, and Lombard; generic 256s will not work properly.
    Generally, when a powerbook's sleep light comes on when either a charged main battery and/or a power adapter is connected, and a power manager reset does not resolve the issue, you have some other hardware problem. Since the 'book is not even turned on, bad RAM would not cause this. If memory were bad, you may or may not get the startup chime, but then you would receive a dialog box on the lit display of a problem with RAM or cache memory in 9.x; OSX does not have this dialog box but nonetheless the POST (power on self-test) still runs.
    When you get a power adapter, I would try this:
    -remove all power;
    -remove the optical drive;
    -lift off the keyboard and very carefully disconnect the keyboard ribbon cable;
    -disconnect the rechargeable backup battery (PRAM battery);
    -lift out the microprocessor card, remove both memory modules;
    -disconnect the HD ribbon cable from the logic board;
    -reinstall the microprocessor card without any memory;
    -connect just the power adapter, then press the power button; if no response, press the reset button on the back panel, then try the power button.
    In the above, you have stripped down the powerbook to its bare essentials for a power test. If you have no hardware problem, you should have no light steady sleep light and when the power button is pressed, you should hear 1-beep...no RAM detected.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58183
    If the above produces no positive results, then you have a failed component somewhere.

  • CS4 becomes non-responsive when I right click

    When I go to open a document in CS4 and then try to right click, delete or move files while I'm in the open screen, Photoshop becomes non-responsive and I have to shut it down and restart it, thereby losing any unsaved work. It's been doing it for awhile and I've tried to find a solution, but haven't had any luck. I've deleted my cache and that didn't fix the problem.
    Can anyone help, please?

    Check the mouse/driver.  The functions you mention are controlled by the OS even though you are in PS.

  • Satellite A660 - USB 2.0 ports are non responsive

    My Satellite A660 Series Laptop is one month old and has been working fine until now. However, I powered on the machine and all three USB 2.0 Ports are non responsive. I've Shut-Down and Restarted the computer - no change.
    In (Windows 7 - 16 Bit OS) Control Panel - Manage Devices - it says that all USB 2.0 Ports are recognised and working. In reality, NO device in any of the three (3) USB2.0 Ports are actually being recognised or working at all - there is no response. Interestingly, the one (1) eSATA/USB combo port is working and responding properly.
    Can anyone help?
    Should i just send it backto the shop? Yes it is still under warranty.

    Hey,
    > Should i just send it backto the shop?
    No, I think its just a USB driver problem.
    In your case I would reinstall the chipset driver from official Toshiba website. Even you have the newest version, try reinstalling it because it contains the USB drivers and maybe its something wrong with it.
    After chipset driver installation test it again. If it doesnt work remove all USB ports from device manager and restart your notebook. The USB ports will be reinstalled automatically.
    What BIOS version you have installed?

  • N96 *immediate, non-responsive* reboot loop - PLEA...

    Hi all, I really need some help, please, ASAP! PLEASE!
    I have a Nokia N96 with the latest version of software (which has been operating ok for now - and I think that the N96 has Symbian OS 2.3 or something??)
    I installed a program on my phone and it warned that my memory was low --> "Memory low. Delete or move some data from c: Phone memory" so I uninstalled a 2mb theme.
    I then installed a little divx player which I thought wouldn't be much but then I turned off my phone and on (the other program said that I had to reboot my phone) and then my phone would start up and it would start loading up but it would immediately display the "Memory low. Delete or move some data from c: Phone memory" error (while it was trying to autoload everything that autoloads on the phone).
    When this error message comes up the only option is "Ok" but the OK button is non-responsive (we all know that these phones take a while to load up) and within a couple seconds (you can't push a button and get a single response out of the phone to even try sort the problem out) the phone switches off and then switches back on with the same error without being able to do anything about it - perpetual loop!!!
    Because it is in this perpetual loop I tried pluggin in my cable to delete data off C: (anything I could possibly get to in time) but it doesn't pick it up in time!
    So, I am stuck in this "Low memory loop" without being able to get out of it. PLEASE HELP! I desperately need my phone, ASAP! I was thinking there would be a soft-on startup (e.g. hold x and y buttons for example and switch on and it doesn't load up some autoload stuff?) but I couldn't find one after *extensive* googling and forum-browsing.
    I would be so so so grateful if someone could PLEASE HELP!
    Thanks very much,
    Darren
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Sounds like your best option may be the multifingered reset which will wipe all user data from your phone, including the offending apps,
    Before you try that tho try booting the phone with the memory card removed
    If that doesn't work then this is your best option
    1. Switch off the phone.
    2. Hold down the following three buttons: Green (the call answer button), * button, and '3' button.
    3. While holding these buttons, hold the power button for a second to switch on the phone.
    4. Release when the phone shows the nokia hands logo or shows other signs of life like the language selection screen.
    It may take a few attempts and very flexible fingers.
    It will remove everything from your C drive and return the phone to an out of box state
