  • Why are my DVD drives opening on boot up?

For several days now, whenever I start my Mac Pro, early in the boot process both of my DVD drives open their trays. After some period of time goes by after the boot process is complete, they'll both go retract, but something is causing this and if anyone has any ideas as to what that is, please let me know. I'm having a mouse problem and these both started at about the same time, but I'm unaware of what if anything I did to cause it...
    Thanks in advance.
    Rock

    Hi Rocky,
To be honest i have no idea what can cause that but here's what came to mind for me...
    1. Check with software update if your Mac Pro has the latest software and firmware.
    2. Go to system preferences > Startup Disk, select the correct startup disk by clicking it (just to make sure). The DVD drive could be opening 'asking' for a boot disc if it can not find the hard drive with a valid OS on it in the first few seconds. This is just a theory, not sure if it's accurate
    3. Go to Applications > Utilities and start Disk utility. Select your startup drive and click Repair Permissions. When done restart the Mac. Even if this doesn't fix the issue, it's good to run once in a while.

  • CD/DVD drive opens on start and restart

This has been a problem ever since I installed 10.3.9 about a year ago.
Every single time I start up or restart the machine the CD drive pops open.
I'm running a 400 MHz PowerPC G4 (grey tower) and I've installed a LaCie CD/DVD drive. The drive was installed long before the upgrade to Panther and it was not a problem in OS 9 nor in 10.1.x.
Aside from being annoying, it means that I can't start from a CD, which I need to do to run things like Diskwarrior.
    400 MHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Are you using an Apple keyboard and mouse? I just did the firmware update on a 400MHz Sawtooth G4, and the problem you describe started happening to me. I was/am using a non-Apple keyboard and a PS2-USB converter to plug it into the Mac. I just did the 4.2.8 firmware upgrade, and now the drive tray opens on boot/startup. It didn't do that before the firmware upgrade! I hate it when updates/upgrades create more problems than they solve. Anyway, I borrowed a friend's Apple pro keyboard and mouse, and with those plugged in, everything is normal. So if you aren't using an Apple keyboard, you might try plugging one in to see if that fixes the problem.

  • Cd drive ejects on boot

    cd drive ejects on boot
it is a powermac g4 450, computer boots and works fine. the drive doesn't eject by itself any other time.
any ideas on why this is happening?

    plas1, welcome to Apple Discussions.
The problem could be due to some add-on device plugged into the computer. In particular, a malfunctioning mouse or keyboard could be sending a signal to the system to eject the disk.
To solve this problem, unplug all external devices and restart the computer to see if the problem still occurs. If the drive does not pop open or eject the disk, then one of the devices plugged into the computer was causing the problem. Take the keyboard by itself and plug it into the computer, then restart the computer and see of the drive opens or the system ejects the disk inside; if it doesn't, plug the mouse in and restart again. Continue to add the equipment back onto the computer one piece at a time and restarting until the drive opens or the system ejects the disk; the last piece of equipment added to the system is responsible for causing the drive to open.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Want to use a Firewire external drive as my boot drive, few questions thoug

I have an old second gen ppc mini. My hard drive just died. It's been on it's last legs for months, but today it finally stopped booting totally. Ran a hardware test and the drive is bad.
Instead of having to open it, I'd rather just buy an external firewire drive. The prices are easily comparable to an internal anyway. That brings up a few questions.
    1. From research on the apple discussions and just good old google, I'm finding it's mostly viable to use an external drive as a boot device, anything I should know?
    2. From what I remember, when OS X is installed, the installer asks for drive to install OS to. If I select the firewire drive will it then remember that drive as the boot device, after the install is finished? I don't want to have to select it each time the machine reboots.
    3. What happens with the bad internal hard drive? Can it just stay there? Since it's bad will it interfere with the mini operation? I'd rather not have to open the case.
    4. Anything special about the external drive that I need to know? I found this one on buy.com...
    http://www.buy.com/prod/fd-titanium-ii-firewire-usb-2-0-hard-drive-320gb-7200rpm -ieee-1394a/q/loc/101/203405880.html
    Any problem with that one?
I guess if there's anything I'm not thinking of, please let me know.
    Thanks...

If I were going to use an external hard drive, I would buy the case from http://www.macsales.com (one example is http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEFW91UAL1K/ ) then buy a hard drive and put it in. The hard drive, depending on manufacturer, will have either a 3 year or 5 year (Seagate is the only one warrantied for 5 years) warranty, unlike the prepackaged units that have a 1 year warranty. Also, if you can get an external case which uses any of the Oxford chipsets, they work well with our macs. Also, some people like the ministack for mac mini usage: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ministack/
You can define in system preferences, in startup disk, which hard drive you want the system to boot from.

  • Satellite A300-1G5: webcam stopped working - Webcam driver open fail

    Hi
    my laptop specifcation here : ( [A300 - 1G5|http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/jsp/SUPPORTSECTION/discontinuedProductPage.do?service=EU&com.broadvis ion.session.new=Yes&PRODUCT_ID=1055589] ) for any needed details ..
The problem simply is, the webcam stopped working for some reason, an error messeage says "Webcam driver open fail. Please restart camera or computer".
I noticed that whenever I put the computer in sleep mode I was getting on the icon tray a notification says "USB device unrecognized"... I wasnt aware what it was - thought it becasue of the USB mouse being plugged... but I think its related to the camera...
software is installed but camera is not working and cant enable it .. I did download the latest driver from toshiba site , but still not working ...
Currently my laptop runs Vista HP SP2 32-bit, Windows defender enabled, Windows Firewall Enabled, Windows UAC enabled, Kaspersky Ani-Virus 2009 Enabled. I only use Windows Live Messenger (which up to date I think , version : 14.0.8089.726) which i used camera with, I quite using face recognition long time ago and rarely use the webcam ... I didnt install or update any drivers and used to have the laptop running perfectly..
    So what happened now ?!

    Hi
I have had a similar error message and could solve this by disabling the webcam software from startup.
In msconfig -> Start Up tab I have unchecked the Chicony webcam software.
This prevents it from automatic loading.
I dont use MSN but Skype and the Chicony webcam software is always disabled (not executed) if Skype is running.
Maybe you should try this too.
    Furthermore you could try this:
Go to device manager, mark the webcam (imaging devices USB video device) and deleted it from the device list.
Then reboot the notebook and wait until the webcam has been recognized again.
    Then test it.

  • My macbook pro dvd drive opens all disks as blank, can I fix it?

My macbook pro dvd drive opens all disks as blank. I have no access to a near by apple store as I live in remote NSW. I purchased the macbook when I lived in Sydney and the old owner had just had a fresh copy of the OS loaded. I've read a discussion of a similar nature and the only comment was take it back, that is easier said than done. Is there a fix I can do from home?

    Nifa86 wrote:

If you didn't buy this from the store, the first thing you need to do is boot from the install DVD, erase the disk drive (perhaps even zeroing it) and install a fresh copy of the OS. You do not want to inherit any changes the previous owner may have made to the system software (or worse).
had just had a fresh copy of the OS loaded

I am talking about putting in any CD that is known to have content and it loads the CD and says its blank with nothing on it
    Who says?

  • CD opens on boot, restart, G5 PowerMac

Whenever I reboot my computer or restart it, the cd will open on boot regardless of if it is empty or has a CD/DVD in it, any ideas on how I can fix this ? otherwise the CD works fine.
I want to boot from my OS X disk on boot, but the cd opens, so it is preventing me from doing that.

Holding down the mouse button opens the optical drive on startup. So my guess is that one of your USB devices is simulating the mouse button being held down during the initial power up.
I would trouble-shoot this by disconnecting all of your USB devices except for a standard Apple keyboard and mouse, then try starting up. If that fixes the problem, connect one device at a time (counting a USB hub as one device) to determine if one device makes the problem occur.

    OK. If you believe that.
When the disk is starting to die it can be bad for a moment and then be good for a while. If there was no problem while you were checking it of course it shows up good.
I tell you those are the signs of a disk that is about to die.

  • Error message: "Webcam driver open fail" for Satellite L305-S5875

Problem: Webcam is not working and when Camera Assistant Software is started up, the Error message, "Webcam driver open fail" pops up.
    Computer: Notebook Satellite L305-S5875
    OS: Windows Vista
In troubleshooting, I have unsuccessfully tried the following: Changed the webcam driver several times, rolled back driver, updated driver, and tried Chicony 2.0 USB driver, and a few other webcam drivers. The webcam initially worked fine, but about a month after installing and using Skype video, the webcam suddenly stopped working and on reboot I got the error message.
I've stopped Skype and Camera Assistant Software at startup and manually start them, as someone suggested this as a solution. I've uninstalled both and reinstalled several times.  I've tried one software without the other installed... trying every possible arrangement for a solution, to no avail.
I called Customer Support and John, although very nice and patient, was not helpful.  He said he'd research and call back.  Didn't.
I've gone to Chicony website to try to find an more current driver than January 07.  When I let Windows install the latest from the web, it installs a Microsoft 2006 driver.  I don't think it's a hardware issue, as it started acting up after Skype installed.  I also tried System Restore, but that didn't work either.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks,
    SteveCo

Thanks Jerry.  I spent hours going through the links you provided and tried some of the suggestions looking for a solution.  Nothing worked.
I tried uninstalling Toshiba's Camera Assist software and Skype (Skype initially seemed to be the instigator of the problem), completely removing both from the registry, and removing the webcam with Device Manager.  Then I made sure Vista was up to date, and then installed the latest Toshiba Camera Assist software from the Toshiba download page.  After installation and rebooting, I'm getting the same error message: "Webcam driver open fail."
The webcam used to work, before we installed Skype and used it a few times.  From the other posts I've read, it does seem to be a common problem... usually after Skype or another webcam-using software is installed and run.
We have another Toshiba laptop: A215-S4757, that has the same OS and webcam-using programs, and it does not have an issue.  Apparently though , after going through all the links on the European message board, you provided, the L305 model is having a problem.
    Open for suggestions.

  • My internal hard drive no longer boots.  Boots just fine in external usb enclosure.

My internal hard drive no longer boots when inside my laptop.  The drive boots just fine in external usb enclosure.  It is also fully recognized when internal (as seen in single user mode, recovery mode or while booting from another drive).
    I have tried:
    with disk utilities
    •fixing permissions
    •repairing disk
    in single user mode
    •fsck -fy
    zapping the pram
removing ram and zapping the pram
Any suggestions or diagnostics would be appreciated.

Can't believe I spent days reformating my hard drive, restoring it, getting another hard drive... and it was all a cable that failed.  I wonder what can make an internal cable like that fail (seems like the least likely part of all to fail).

  • My clone external hard drive won't boot - start up?

    Hi,
I am selling my MacPro and need to clone its system drive for the new lap top I will buy soon. So I bought a new external 2TB HDD from OWC. I have found that this external HDD will not boot up, even though it says it is bootable, and appears in the Start Up prefs when I select it. It sppears on the desktop, doesn't make any weird clicking noises as well.
I am using 10.6.8 OS X. The 2TB HDD has two partitions (created with DU), one is bootable (Mac OS X extended journaled), and the other is a regular HDD space for media etc. It is GUID. It has "Ownership" checked in the info box.
I used CCC 3.4.4 and since this is 'hopefully' a one time deal, selected the 'Delete anything that doesn't exist on the source' setting. I cloned my system drive to the bootable space and had no problems with the transfer. Plenty of space to write all the files. I even made sure everything was checked in the 'source' window that a system drive might need. Everything was checked.
I spoke with a representive at the OWC Sales company and checked that this HDD can be used as a bootable drive.
I checked the connections: with external HDD with FW800, and Sata connectors. I have checked it with my Mac Book Pro as well. Same result. No boot.
I really don't understand why this drive won't boot, since everything looks correct.
Does anyone have any thoughts, suggestions, ideas for fixing this issue?
    Thanks
    M

Not sure if you managed to get this issue resolved yet Marcus, but I too have a similar problem:
Currently I'm upgrading from Leopard to Lion (via Snow Leopard) on both an iMac and MacBook Pro (both Intel), but before I proceed with the OSX upgrade I wanted to back everything up. Thus far I have partitioned an external firewire drive (G Drive - one that is bootable), and cloned each machine using Carbon Copy Cloner to it's own partition (both GUID). There is plenty of space left over on each partition.
The issue - I can boot the OS X from the external drive on the MacBook Pro but not on the iMac.
When I restart and hold down Option on the iMac the only drive that appears is the HDD, not the other two selectable drives that are visible if I boot up on the MacBook Pro. On the iMac in System Prefs > Startup Disc I can see all 3 drives but when I select it and restart, the machine freezes on the grey loading screen and goes no further.
Not that it should make a difference, but there is a 3rd partition on the external drive that is currently empty (for extra storage).
Any help is greatly appreciated - I can't find any relevant answers elsewhere. Thanks,
    Dan

  • Re: Satellite A300 PSAGCA -02Y010 - Error: Webcam driver open failed

    Problem:
Recieve error every time I try to use Camera Assistance Software for Toshiba: Webcam driver open failed. Please restart camera or computer. Web cam also does not work in Skype. It seems that this is a very common problem with the A300s series, yet there is no clear solution out there.
    Hardware
    Series: A300
    Model: PSAGCA -02Y010
    Software
    Operating System: Windows 7 64-bit
Camera Assistant Software for Toshiba: 1.7.175.0123
    Details
I recently did a clean install of Windows 7, updating from Windows Vista. I never used the web cam on Windows Vista, so I can't testify as to whether the web camera was workin correctly or not. However, when I tried to use it with Skype, it did not work. I reinstalled the driver that I backed up before I installed the new operating system, but it did not work. The web cam doesn't show up at all in Device Manager - even when set to display hidden devices. Trying to add new hardware through the control panel fails to detect the web camera at all. I have restarted after every install/repair of the driver.
    Steps Taken
    Reinstalled backuped drivers
I used third party software (Double Driver) to back up and reinstall the drivers for the web camera after I installed Windows 7. Double Driver claimed there was no device to install the driver for. I manually copied the files into the Camera Assistance folder and overwrote the existing ones. The files I copied were:
    casflr.cat
    oem34.inf
    restore.ini
    UVCFTR_S.SYS
    Reinstalled Drivers from Toshiba Website
Extensive goolging has only turned up recommendations to uninstall and reinstall drivers. I was unable to find any drivers specifically for windows 7 64-bit, but I did try those for my model of laptop for Windows Vista 64-bit - no luck. I tried installing Camera Assistance Software for Toshiba, which as far as I can tell, includes the driver - it only gives me the error described above.
I also tried locating a generic Windows 7 driver for the web camera - I was unable to find one.
    Check Registry Value Is Correct
I have also tried checked the registry value at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/ControlSet001/Enum/USB/SN001/ClassUID matches the value in C:\Program Files (x86)\Camera Assistant Software for Toshiba\driver\64bit\casflr.inf as and C:\Program Files (x86)\Camera Assistant Software for Toshiba\driver\32bit\casflr.inf recommended by some article recommend.
Please, I would really appreciate it if anyone could help me out here. I have exhausted all the options I can think of.
    Likely Solution:
I encountered a thread post that suggested a loose wire was responsible and that the camera would work when the lid was almost closed. I tried this and the camera suddenly appeared in device manager. However, I still can't get it to work with Camera Assistant Software or Skype.

Hi - I'm a newbie to this forum.
I have an A300 Satellite Pro - not even 2 years old.
In the last 2 days I have 2 problems that I think are possibly related.
    1. Like others on here I now cannot get my internal webcam to work. I get the 'webcam driver open failed' message. I have read some forums etc and today I have:
    a) loaded most recent BIOS,
    b) reloaded the webcam software drivers (the most recent seems to be from 2008!)
    c) restarted my laptop about 20 times
    Nothing works
    2. In the last 2 days for the first time I keep getting the 'USB device not recognised' message that annoyingly crops up about every 10 seconds. I am assuming that the webcam is connected to a USB port (internal) and is no longer being recognised. Based on Google advice in various forums I have also:
    1) Turned off the AC power supply
2.) Taken out the laptop battery and waited 5 mins - this apparently resets the BIOS
    3) tried using device manager in various ways
    Nothing bloody works!!
Maybe the hardware is damaged but I doubt it - I have not dropped the laptop, I always pack it carefully in a padded rucksack. It has always worked fine until 2 days ago.

  • X102e - Hard drive does not boot into Windows

Hi, I was trying to reinstall Windows on my X120e.
I tried clean install with Windows 7 Professional, but the hard drive does not boot into the Windows once it has done the first phase of the install(you know, the copying part)
After the restart done by Windows, it goes as far as "Starting Windows" but does not actually boot into the Windows.
When I try to install Windows with another HDD, the device works well, but I can't swap the HDD because it is not 7.5mm think HDD.
Is there any possibility the HDD will work trough any software-level process? The HDD works fine as external HDD when tested with external HDD adapter, and installs well. only problem is that it fails to boot

This is not exactly the issue. I was talking about the HDD originally installed in the PC.
The PC successfully recognizes the external disk I used to install the Windows, but the problem was that I did not boot into the "First boot" screen, which basically works on the already installed data.
As of now I have installed an SSD and is working fine. strange part is that HDD works just fine when I use it as an external HDD via adapter. Strange huh?
