CD Drive screwing up

Hi,
So I got a new CD (Thrice, yay!), and I went to listen to it. Popped it into my computer (MBP, Tiger, 2.16ghz, bought June 2007). I got one song into the CD, and it suddenly stopped. I figured that Itunes messed up. But then it wouldn't start again, Itunes wouldn't shut down, and when I finally got it shut down, I ejected the CD. But the CD didn't eject. I heard the noise of it trying to eject, but instead, it just stayed there. I finally got it out, and then a little later, tried it again. Same problem.
What's up with it? What should I do?

i would try various things for this to see if any difference is made. first, try booting to open firmware holding apple-option-o-f and then type in these commands--
reset-nvram (hit return)
set-defaults (hit return)
reset-all (hit return)
the last command reboots the computer. also, i would do a pmu reset. instructions for your model should be found here. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449 if these things don't help, you can also try cleaning the drive with an optical drive cleaning kit, and as well, try booting to the install disk and running disk repair. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214 let me know how this is going. • Drive screws for SATA in G5

This is silly I know. But where on earth does one buy replacement hard drive screws for a powermac G5? I've not been able to find any vendors.

Hi, and a Warm Welcome to the Power Mac G5 Forum!
There are spare hard drive screws, if you haven't used them, in the G5 just to the left of the drive bays as shown in Fig 8 here
    http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/g5/073-0851.pdf
If you need more, they are available here
    http://www.welovemacs.com/9226253.html
May be cheaper elsewhere, or from your local AppleStore, etc. if you quote the part number.

  • Drive Screws, where can 'I get them?

I'm renovating a PowerMac G5 2.7 and I need to get hold of the little screws that you plug into the hard drives so they slot into the drive bays. I'm also after the equivalent screws for the underside of the Optical drive. Does anyone know where in the UK (or who will send to the UK)? I'd like to avoid Mac-Pro who chargew $17.99 each (for a 2 cent screw?!?!)

Hi, and a Warm Welcome to the Power Mac G5 Forum!
Well - the 922-6253 Power Mac G5 OVERMOLD HDA Mounting Screw (8PK) are 18 GBP + 4 GBP delivery + VAT (and they are out-of-stock) here
    http://www.applemacparts.co.uk/store/productinfo.php?cPath=7445_7624_7631&productsid=63279
    Mac-Pro charge 17.77 USD for a pack of 4

You could check if the spare HD Guide Screws have been used - shown in a vertical row at the left in Figure 8 here
    http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/g5/073-0851.pdf
The Optical Drive screws are equally affordable in UK... (and also out-of-stock)

If you are not going to move the G5 around much, any screw with the correct thread and approximate length may do it - the purpose of the screws is to position the optical drive at the correct height, so that the tray operates the silver gate and clears the sides of the aperture. You can use Loctite or similar on the thread.
It has been known - if you speak to them nicely - for an Apple Repair Shop to sell the Guide Screws for a more reasonable outlay, especially if you visit them. Don't know about AppleStores - they are rather thin on the ground in UK.

    Good Luck.

  • Hard drive screw broke - Where do I get a new one?

    Hello,
When I tried to update my hard drive, the screw broke.
I somehaow managed to get it screwed out, but I'll need a new one.
Does anybody know, where I'd get it?

  • Hard drive screw fell out and doesn't load half the times. (t41)

I have a T41 thinkpad and i saw the screw on the bottom holding the hard-drive is gone.  When i turn off/on computer it sometimes loads, sometimes is very touchy where if i bump lower right side it turns off hard-drive.  What should i do?

Pull the hard drive out entirely, then push it back in as far as it will go...and make a trip to the local hardware store. I'm sure that $1 or less will resolve this issue.

  • G-Drive screws up Option Restart Boot (so i have to turn it off)

i have a first generation mac pro and i have discovered after about a year and a half of problems with my Option Boot sequence (i.e. i cannot get into my windows 7 boot camp partition without major hassling) that if i turn off or unplug my external G-Drive - the boot performs flawlessly.
does anyone happen to know if there is a good fix for this or if i have to contact G-Drive tech support?
i tried a google search of "Option Restart screwed up by G Drive" and found a black hole.
    thanks.

    hi grant.
are you still available on this thread by any chance?!
for some silly reason i went ahead and did an RMA on this drive (likely i did not totally understand what you were telliing me or i was imagining that there was also something specific about that particular drive). in any event, i am almost positive i would have zeroed out the drive before setting it up again and now that i have installed xp and windows 7 on it i am trying to finalize things over here.
so i am back to this same deal where the drive plugged in and on prevents boot (i do see the boot screen however and can select a drive) but i have to shut down because nothing happens after selecting a drive. if i simply turn off the drive and reboot i can get into whatever boot drive i want.
we also went ahead and reset the PRAM and actually plugged the drive into the front of the machine instead of in the back. no go, same problem.
can i just ask you if i go ahead and reformat and rezero and reset up my time machine on this drive whether there is anything else i can do? i mean, i know i can try and boot to this drive before setting it up as a time machine drive, i suppose...
ideally the purpose of time machine is to have an incremental backup and if i am only going to have this when i don't forget to turn the drive back on this is sort of a problem for me.
i mean, if i am understanding correctly, zeroing out the drive would leave a driver still on the drive that came from G-Tech? or, i mean there may be OTHER information on this drive in addition to the driver that won't be wiped when zeroing out? or - er - maybe setting up time machine on this particular drive is creating some kind of issue...?
    anyway, big thanks as always.

  • Raw SATA drive screw holes too shallow for 2008 Mac Pro carrier

Mac Pro early 2008. Bought a WD Black, 5-year warrantee, bare SATA drive to replace a 1TB. The 2TB drive works fine in an external enclosure, but not in an internal bay. There are four self contained screws in the drive carrier that mate with corresponding holes in the bare drive. For the 2TB bare drive, the two screws closer to the connecting pins cannot screw all the way in - the holes are not deep enough - and the drive will not mount. The carrier goes in all the way, but I deduce that the pins do not mate. I tried two carriers and two bays. Other bare drives are fine.
System Preferences/Serial-ATA does not see the 2TB drive. Neither does Disk Utility, nor FAST status.
Return the drive and try another 2TB? Clip or replace the captive screws?

Those are intriguing, but I wonder if they would also be too long.
I would trim some of the existing bolts down, or buy some of those ones you posted and, if needed, trim them down. I have an electrician's tool that has bolt-trimmers for common sizes (and 6-32 is one of them). The bolt trimmer has threaded holes near the pivot point for several different small sizes. Here is a picture of a similar tool:
The poor man's version would be to thread a 6-32 nut onto the bolt, cut it off, then remove the nut to clean up the cut threads.

  • Need hard drive screw part number for T500 please

I want to buy a spare screw for the screw used to screw the hard drive cover to the base of my T500 notebook.
Where is it possible to find the part number so I can buy this??
What IS the part number/name I should use??
Perhaps someone knows the specific size/dimensions/etc. required to buy an off-the-shelf screw??
I tried calling support but there is no way to speak to a human to explain what I'm looking for, which is unusual and specific.
    Thank you, Tom

    Hi tlyczko,
The part number for the screw set is listed in the Hardware Maintenance Manual. You can buy them here.
Hope this helps, and come back and tell us how it goes!

  • Hard Drive screw destroyed.

After trying to unscrew the upper and longest of the three screw which removes the black frame and allows you to take the hard drive out I destroyed it.That's mainly because of the screw drivers I bought for just $5 from OWC.Anyway,I finally managed to take the screw out but couldn't do it without destroying it.
So what I need now is that screw and actually asap!Does anyone have any idea where I can find that kind of stuff?Couldn't find anything googling aroung.

    You're right,I should've thought of that myself.Panic didn't let me to!
    Cheers and thanks

  • Hard drive screw sizes

I am expanding my Mac with additional Hard disks. I need to know the size of the screws used to install 3.5" (IDE/SATA) hard disks.
Specifics like thread gauge would be helpful, or even a good place to pick these up online.
    Thanks!!!

Your G5 should have extra mounting screws installed in the case next to the hard drive bay...just waiting for you to use them. If you're replacing your original drive you'll just re-use the screws from the old drive.

  • Use of thumb drive screws up iPhoto

What has trying to use a thumb drive done to my iPhoto files?  A couple years ago, I transferred many photos to a thumb drive as an iPhoto file.  I believe there was a trick to getting the iPhoto software over to the thumb drive, but I've no recollection how I did it.  Anyway, there was no problem with iPhoto on the thumb drive or on my MacBook-- both showed the pix they should have. The other day, I tried to move a few more photos to the thumb drive, but they didn't fall into iPhoto.  I guess that would require some extra software.  The annoyance is that when I eject the thumb drive and summon iPhoto, I don't see what should be on my computer but still see the iPhoto display from the thumb drive -- apparently it's been retained on my hard drive or in memory.  I've tried restarting the computer, after which the best I can get is an iPhoto screen with no photos at all in it.  There are three or four photo libraries on the hard drive, but none containing all my current pix.  I have found some of those photos on the hard drive by using Spotlight to list items with .jpg suffixes.  But they seem to be scattered, and I doubt that all the old pix are there.
This all involves a MacBook running OS 10.4.11, iPhoto 6.0.5, and a Geeksquad 4-GB thumb drive.

Thanks for your prompt response to my posting.  In response to your questions and comments:
    1.  The thumb drive's format appears to be "MS-DOS File System (FAT32)"
    2.  "fall into" refers to the fact that the pix recently transferred to the thumb drive didn't go directly into the "iPhoto Library" folder already on the drive and listing material put on the drive a year or so ago but are listed as individual jpeg files.  I've dragged these individual pix into the iPhoto Library.  But I hesitate to boot from the thumb drive because of the mess it led to the other day.
    3.  When I enter /volumes in the Finder/Go/Go to Folder wndow, The volumes directory that appears lists aliases for my computer's hard drive and the thumb drive, which is plugged in at the moment.  Entering volumes in Spotlight produces only documents that mention the word "volumes."

  • Missing guide screws for installing a second drive in my G5

Hi, I just purchased a G5 and went to install a second drive and found only one guide screw in the unit. Has anyone found an inexpensive place to purchase replacement guide screws? I guess I could always use normal screws with some sort of electrical tape on them but I would prefer to get the proper ones.
    Thanks.

Did you really purchase a G5 or did you purchase a Mac Pro? The computer in your signature is a Mac Pro, but perhaps you haven't updated your signature for your new purchase. Mac Pro has two optical drive slots whereas the G5 has one.
Anyway, the official hard drive screws for the G5 are here. Notice that they are incredibly expensive. Some have had luck with the drive mounting screws that usually come with a new drive.

  • Where do I find mounting screws for a PowerMac G5 1.6 Ghz optical drive?

I bought a used PowerMac G5 without the optical drive. I have a drive to install but I need the screws to mount the drive in the drive bay properly. I'm sure that somebody makes these and I don't have any idea of where to look. I think they are ISO threaded screws (metric) but I'm not sure if a 'normal' PV repair shop would have them. The nearest Apple repair center is in Bloomington, IN, where I bought this great new, to me, machine. They didn't have any hardware to mount the drive. Thanks for any help in this matter.

The hex head screws are M3x3.
    For "non-Sony" drives:

Both Phillips and Hex on eBay:

Phillips head are for Sony drives, Hex is for most others.

  • Hard Drive Tray will not fit after attaching hard drive

    (From Davin Oishi)
Issue: After installing the hard  drive onto the hard drive tray, the tray will not longer fit into the  Smart Storage hard disk drive slot.
Using hard drive tray  screws from the legacy NSS2000, NSS3000, NSS4000, or NSS6000 may  encounter this issue.
Resolution: Be sure to use the hard drive  screws that are supplied with your Smart Storage device.  Smart Storage  ships with screws for both 3.5" SATA drives and 2.5" SATA drives.

If they are still on your Mac's drive then you should be able to add them back into iTunes via File > Add To Library

  • Changing Hard Drive Woes

Alright well i bought a 7200rpm 250gb scorpio black to update from the standard included HDD. I have the external case, cloned to it, restarted and was able to run it from the external. I bought a case of 11 philips and flat precision screwdrivers from #1 to #0 -4. Ive followed all the directions up to the point where you unscrew the bracket above the HDD. Everything is going well. Im using the #0 -3 (after trying -1 to -4) and now...
    I cant do it.
Its stuck ridiculously tight, and im pretty sure if i keep trying to do it, the screw head will strip (actually it looks halfway there). Ive tried wrapping a rubberband around the driver for some grip, and ive tried turning the actual body of the mac while i attempted to turn the screw. I know that this isnt exactly something that can be solved by an answer over the internet, but I need your input on what to do now. Should I call up AppleCare? Do they even tend to these issues? Take it to an Apple Store (though i heard they wouldnt do it for you)? Or am i just stuck with a small hard drive held in place by an irremovable screw?
I do hope it isnt the latter.
(if its any help, i got this the week after it came out in october, maybe a problem limited to time of production?)

    carl wolf wrote:
Using the wrong tool to perform a job is ridiculous. Another poster tried the same thing as you, and stripped a screw. He thought Apple would replace the HDA carrier free of charge as a sign of good will. He hasn't posted since then.
Doesn't say too much that he hasn't responded. I've seen some threads that seemed to die until a month later when the result was posted. I don't know if they would replace a specialized part that's bigger than a screw or an adapter cap for free. However - we've all heard of complimentary service at Apple Stores, including fishing out a mini CD/DVD improperly inserted in the optical drive or helping to turn off a stuck optical digital out.
What we would hope would be that they would at least help the guy extract the part and inspect it for damage. From rereading the thread, I'm not even so sure if the reference was to the drive screws or the bracket that secures the drive assembly to the chassis. The bracket would have a captive screw. iFixit doesn't have any in stock, but they normally charge $29.95 for it.

In fact he never said anything about hoping to get it done for free, but that he wished it could be replaced without having it sent out. Some in the thread suggested that it might be done for free, while others suggested that they might do it for a nominal charge. One person noted that the same thing had happened to him with an out of warranty PowerBook and his local Apple Store did in fact fix it for free.
