CD Drive stopped working (xpost)

Hi
At the weekend I ran software update on my iMac and chose to install the 10.4.8 update. It failed and asked me to retrieve the installer from the trash and run it again. I did this and it seemed to complete and the computer restarted.
The restart resulted in a kernel panic (just after boot) which ultimately resulted in my reinstalling the OS from the install disks supplied.
Having restored the OS I then removed the DVD, rebooted and then downloaded the combined update and patched the iMac back to 10.4.8.
I then repaired all disk permissions and restarted the computer.
All seemed fine, until about 24 hours later when I came to insert CDROM. The drive wouldn't accept the disk. I can push it in about 3/4 of the way and then nothing. It isn't 'grabbed', nothing happens.
I've seen this reported elsewhere, but have not found a solution.
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3258947#3258947
I've reset the PRAM and NVRAM, repaired permissions, completely powered off, all to no effect.
I'm almost 100% sure that no other disk was inserted after reinstalling the OS.
Is there anything else I should try before I take the iMac back to the store?
Many thanks in advance.
Russell

Hello,
Two thoughts:
1) If you are not 100% sure that there is no disk in there (and even if you are sure), try ejecting the disk anyway.
Startup the computer with a wired mouse, and press and hold the mouse button (left-button) while the computer starts-up. Press and keep holding the mouse button as soon as you turn on the computer. Keep holding it down until a disk ejects (if there is one in there). It could take as much as a minute or two for it to eject the disk.
If you don't have a wired mouse, try it with a wired keyboard. Do the exact same thing as above, except you'll press the eject key on your keyboard instead of the mouse button. If there is no eject key on your keyboard, use the "F12" key.
Don't expect an immediate result either way. It can take 2 or 3 minutes for it to actually eject a disk if one is present.
Now, if it boots without ejecting a disk, see if it will take one now. Perhaps this will have caused the drive to move it's mechanicals and accept a disk.
2) If that doesn't work, try this:
Try inserting a disk while the machine is booting. Apply gentle pressure to a disk right after turning it on. It usually will take a few seconds after the machine has been turned-on for the computer to accept a disk. So, just apply light pressure and see what happens. It should accept a disk after the startup chime. If the disk goes in at that point, see if it is recognized in OS X once the computer boots. Then, see if it will eject.
Also, note that while tinkering, you should use a disk that doesn't contain anything too important.
If the disk won't go in before the computer starts OS X either, then it's a hardware problem and not software.
If it goes in before OS X boots, but will not go in afterwards, then it's software related.
Either way, report back what you find.
I hope this helps.

Since I upgrade to Lion OS my optical drive stop working can't read or write at all I did what I could to fix it but still not working , any help please

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

  • CD drive stopped working on my Satellite L

    Hi
MY CD drive stopped working, but then it recognised a disc which I had inserted, but then stopped working again.
I have deleted upper and low filters from device manager.
I have also downloaded the dvd ram driver from toshiba and my cd drive then worked, but after I closed down the computer, again it would not recognise discs in the drive.
I again downloaded the driver and it then recognised the disc I inserted into the drive.
However, now my computer will not recognise the drive even when I again download the driver.
Does anyone know why it would work intermittently or have any ideas that might help.
    Thanks.

Which satellite L do you have?
Which operating system do you use?
Do you use original Toshiba recovery image?
Is ODD recognized properly in device manager?
    Which disc do you use?
Do you have this problem using only this one disc?
Sorry buddy but your description is so general and there is no one single relevant info that can help for better understanding.
What you can expect are just general answers like:
    -reinstall ODD
    -test with different discs
    -defect ODD

  • Intel wired ethernet driver stops working

We have this issue with several T400 and T500 series ThinkPads that the Intel ethernet driver stops working after a while. All this started to happen maybe a month ago. We have both 32- and 64-bit Windows 7 OSs.
Wired ethernet works ok first, but after a few hours or a day or two this yellow exclamation mark appears on the network icon and it says limited or no connectivity. Wired network stops working and there is nothing we can do to fix this other than reboot the computer. It doesn't even shut down properly, just says "Shutting down" forever and blinks the HDD led maybe once a second. So we have to force it and after booting everything is ok until the next time this happens.
When the network stops working, nothing can be done with the driver because everything just hangs. You cannot disable the connection or uninstall the adapter from Device Manager or anything. Unplugging the ethernet cable does not help either. There is nothing about this problem in the Event log other than about the symptoms of not having a network connection.
What could be the source of this problem? Do you have any ideas about how to diagnose this problem further? We have the newest driver and I have also tried the newest driver from Intel.

Go to Local Area Connection (Wired Intel adapter), Properties and the Configure button, in the Power Management Tab UNCHECK "Allow the Computer to turn off this device to save power".
Window7 does NOT always resolve IP and DHCP when it come out of sleep etc. All attempt to release/renew are in vain. I have seen this on various systems for some time. Occassionally a router reboot fixes it but most of the time is the PC. Frustrating but for Wired use this should always be disabled if you're using it a lot. Power savings is not in your best interest.
Let me know if that does it.

  • ITunes8 -- all optical drives stopped working

After installing iTunes 8, all my optical drives stopped working. Windows simply didn't recognize them. Device manager said they were missing. However the BIOS found them. Uninstalling iTunes8 fixed it.
However, like everyone else here, now I can't return to a previous version of iTunes because it refuses to recognize my library file (a .itl file).
    Argg
What can I do, to either use an older version of iTunes, or fix this problem?

I tried the suggested fix on Apple's site (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2372?viewlocale=en_US) but both my DVD drives remained invisible.
Then I tried the one at MS suggested by Adrian Kingsley-Hughes on his ZDNet blog (http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=2600):
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Hooray! It worked! Not only have my drives reappeared, but I am burning a DVD right now using InfraRecorder.
Unfortunately, now I get a nasty message about missing registry data whenever I start iTunes, but I assume Apple will fix this problem in some future release. I'll have to live with it until then.
I spent hours on this today and almost ordered some new SATA drives, thinking the IDE controller on my mobo must have gone bad. I really appreciate the existence of Adrian's blog and other third party resources!
And I am very annoyed at Apple right now. Releasing software that breaks peoples' computers in a major way is not acceptable, IMHO. Leaving the bad software out there and posting fixes that don't work is even worse.
BTW, I am running XP Pro SP2. I have Logitech hardware and software installed, as well as a number of other USB devices (Treo, Canon printer and scanner, iPod) so (according to Adrian and other sources) I guess I was a likely victim.
Note that, having been burned before by new major releases of iTunes, I was cautious: I held off on installing iTunes 8 until the second release, hoping they'd have fixed any really bad bugs that showed up in the first release by then.
    Silly me.

  • My macbook hard drive stopped working and I loaded another hard drive and can access time capsule but it doesn't show any of my old files and I don't understand why

My 7 year old macbook hard drive stopped working and I put in another hard drive but when I went to restore my information from airport time capsule it only shows today and nothing older.  Help?

Did you do a TM backup after you installed the disk? It may write over the previous backup.. but it should actually start a new one.
Read the info about using migration.. see http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
Or the Mac is probably looking at the backup as from a different computer.
See the details of how to use TM to restore to a different Mac.
    Q17 here. http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I would read through 14-17 carefully.
You should be able to do a full recovery of the TM backup to a USB drive plugged into the computer.

  • Radeon display driver stopped working

    Hi
I am running Win 8.1 x64 (up-to-date) on HP Pavillion 1322TX laptop. There are  Intel HD Graphics 3000 and ATM Radeon HD 7450M two graphic cards as the device manager window. Recently I am getting blue screens and later message appear saying the ATM driver stopped working. I found many problems with this driver in the past as well. When I check the relevent page for my laptop model, there is no update since 2012. What the hell!
Can I update these two drivers seperately by getting updates from Intel and AMD sites?
Is there any update for catalyst control system (CCC) ?
When I try to update through the CCC or HP Support Assist, it is always no updates.
Can any one please advise me?
PS. I am fed up with HP and ATM, I wont go for HP again and never recommend for someone elese.

    Hi JSHLMS,
I see that you have some questions regarding the your switchable graphics. You will not want to use the drivers available from Intel and AMD because with switchable graphics it is the manufacturer of the notebook that configures the drivers. Intel and AMD provide a basic driver and HP configures for their notebooks. You can download the latest AMD software package which includes CCC here.  I did some research and found Windows 8.1 versions of your drivers but as your model doesn't have specific drivers I can't guarantee that they will work.  If these drivers don't work then I recommend downgrading back to Windows 8.

My laptop froze and a message popped up saying my driver stopped working. Then another message popped up saying my driver isn't working at all. I understand that your notebook froze and you received a message that a driver has stopped working and you are unable to play games.
Have you tried running The HP Support Assistant to look for HP updates and help resolve issues.
Here is a link to HP Pavilion dv5-1388us Entertainment Notebook PC Drivers.
    Have you checked for viruses?
I would also run a hardware test to rule out a malfunction. HP Notebook PCs - System Diagnostics (F2)
If everything tests fine and you are unable to install the required driver, you can do a system restore back to a knonw good date. Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 7).
If that is not an option I suggest you do a recovery back to factory. Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 7)
During the recovery  process you will receive a prompt to backup you personal data. If you have not done one recently, I suggest you do one now.

I have hp dv9810us notebook running vista home premium and my dvd/cd drive stopped working. Doesn't even show up in Devive Manager. Before I started trying stuff I was wondering if this a common problem with a easy fix. thanks

Fairly common, but, usually, no easy fix.

I have the same notebook and also lost my dvd drive.  My problem resulted from the nvidia graphics problem.  Google "defective nvidia gpu" if you are not familar with this.
Mine died three months after I lost the drive, but I revived it with a pseudo reflow method by baking my motherboard @ 385 degres F.  My dvd drive is back and the laptop runs noticeably cooler.

  • Windows accelorator driver stopped working

Every now and again I have a message which comes up saying Windows accelorator driver stopped working for Windows XP and has recovered. I have Windows 7 home premium so why would this message keep appearing every so often.

Is there any text before "windows acc...." in the error message? From the information supplied I would guess you are running W7 32bit and you've either upgraded from XP or you have loaded an XP grahics driver - I've only seen that sort of message from video drivers. I would check that either an updated Toshiba driver or a "WHQL" certified laptop driver is available from the graphics chipset's web site.
