  • External dvd burner stopped working

Hi, have an older imac -installed tiger os a while back worked fine- bought a LaCie external cd/dvd burner worked fine until this am 12/29 when THE COMPUTER TURNED ITSELF OFF!! (no human intervention, no power outage) restarted computer which functioned fine- hooked up LaCie and imac would not recognize burner(couldn't bring it down on menu)very bizarre Hope this makes sense to someone Thanks

If possible, try to use the drive on another computer, just to make sure it is still working ok. Even a PC is good for testing, since you just want to make sure it is ok.
Try resetting the PRAM, by restarting the Mac and immediately holding down the CMD, Option, P and R keys simultaneously (CMD is the cloverleaf/apple key) before the "bong" sound. Keep them down for at least three "bong"s, then let the system finish starting up. Plug the drive, pop a prerecorded CD/DVD and see if it mounts. You can use Disk Utility to check if the system "sees" the unit, or you can also run System Profiler for that purpose.

  • DVD burning not working after upgrading to 10.5.1

    Hi,
I just purchased a macbook and found that dvd burning stopped working after upgrading to mac os 10.5.1. I went back to 10.5 and now it works without problems. Since so far I haven't experience problems with 10.5, I will continue using it.
Anyway, I just wanted to let other users know about this problem. I didn't find any references about it in the forum.
    Best wishes,
    Manuel

    Hi,
I just got DVD burning to work under 10.5.1. I had originally formatted the OS-X partition as "case sensitive". Today I reformatted the partition as a regular Mac-os journaled partition, re-installed leopard and the upgrade, and now DVD burning works fine. I am not 100% sure, but it seems that using the case sensitive format caused the problem.

  • OS 10.6.8 dvd player stopped working

OS 10.6.8 dvd player stopped working (stutters - no sound) when I am in my usual log-in but does work in my alternate (checking) log-in, disk permissions repair did not help. I trashed a dvd.plist file from my users/Library/Preferences folder but no change. Any suggestions most welcome.

Thanks for reminding me about VLC Player. I had an old version that I occasionally used for AVIs and such but I hadn't used it for quite awhile. Of course, it works perfectly so I'll take your advice and (sort of) forget about the Apple DVD Player - although I hate having a glitch that I can't get to the bottom of.
For example, removing both of those items made no difference.
Re: the two accounts when in safe mode, DVD Player doesn't work at all in safe mode...
so that didn't get me any farther.
No doubt when I eventually upgrade to Lion the DVD Problem will sort itself out. Until then, I have good ole' VLC. I appreciate the help.

  • Running 10.6.8 - DVD has stopped working

Running 10.6.8 - DVD has stopped working, and in system prefs I can't select "Open iDVD" when you insert a video DVD... can I reload iDVD without reloading the whole system software?

Have you tried deleting the DVD Player preferences and then restarting DVD player to try again? It's possible that the preferences have become corrupted.
If you want to try that:
    1. Quit DVD Player if it's running
    2. Go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete the com.apple.dvdplayer.plist file
    3. Restart DVD Player and test to see if the problem is solved.

  • Getting an External CD/DVD Burner to Work Properly

Hello!  This is a little bit of a tricky problem, but hopefully you can help me fix it.
I have a (very old) 15' Macbook Pro which I've upgraded with an SSD and OS X 10.6.8.  The only problem I'm currently having is getting an external CD/DVD burner to work correctly.
The CD/DVD drive on the computer itself is broken (it will not load CDs), but it is powered and makes noise when I press the eject button.  As such, I went out and bought this external drive.
The drive works properly- I was even able to use it to boot from my install CD and use disk utility to create a backup of my computer.  CDs/DVDs loaded into it are recognized and work perfectly.
The issue I have is that the unit will not burn CDs.  I've tried using both the native iTunes burner and my copy of Toast Titanium to burn CDs, but it never works properly.  Whenever I try, the external unit spins up, the progress bar starts moving.... and eventually an error message comes up.  Whenever I use Toast I can select the drive to use, but it seems to be automatically overriding whatever I select and trying to get the internal (broken) drive to burn the CD, since the internal drive starts making noise.  Additionally, whenever I check the CDs I tried to burn, nothing has actually been done and the CDs still show up as being blank.
My question is- are there any settings in OS X that would disable the internal drive and get the external drive to properly burn CDs?  Thanks!

Ah!  Yeah, I didn't even see that- thanks for the heads up!  Unfortunately, my Macbook only has one USB port on each side, and the cable on the external drive won't reach.  I have a USB hub I've been using, but I suspect the unit isn't getting enough power with that on there since it spins up, the disc will mount, and then quickly disappear.  I think I'll try and hunt down an extended USB cord or something.
I also contacted Amazon about trying to find a proper DC adapter for the unit, but they couldn't help me at all.

  • DVD Burner not working in Mac Mini

My mac mini (running OSX 10.7.5) all of a sudden stopped burning/reading DVDs, however CD burning and reading still works.
I ran my system's disk utility and corrected some problems and tried again to no avail. I tried a previously burned DVD which did not work either. However, after trying several DVDs, I got the burner to work (or at least it appeared to as it went thru the usual messages of recording my iDVD movie, but when the recording message showed DONE, the screen appeared to freeze there (typically, at this point, I usually get a message that asks if I want to burn another) --I was able to hit cancel to exit the program. Anyways, the DVD did not burn. At this point on the plus side, I can now read my previously burned DVD... so I tried again to burn my iDVD Movie again but it just spits out after 15-30 seconds.
I saw on some boards that I should try cleaning the burner? Do I have to take my system apart to do this? Do I use a cleaning disk? If this is the case, will my DVD acknowledge it if it isn't working? Or do I just spray compressed air into its slot?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is for a job that I need to get out.
    Thanks so much!

Yes use a CD/DVD cleaning disk

  • DVD SuperDrive stops working

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro with the built in "superdrive", it is the OPTIARC DVD RW AD-7170A, Rev. 1.NC
I've noticed that it seems to stop working after having a disk in for 5 min or so. The discs will mount, but then disappear after a while and the drive starts this intermittent "clicking" noise as if its trying to read the disk. At this point the eject button does not open the drive, opening Disk Utility just hangs, and I can sometimes get it to eject by opening Parallels and ejecting from there.
Any ideas on this, or know if theres a firmware update? Or can anyone suggest an inexpensive replacement?
    Thanks.

    No solution here either guys....
This is really unfortunate. From what I can gather, the superdrives on these computers have had these problems for years. They stop reading or writing and theres little to no real solution. I LOVE APPLE.
But this is an annoyance that I haven't seen Apple address. Truthfully, by now, I would think they would have a driver fix or some kinda upgrade that can be applied to reset the drives.
My superdrive will not burn DL disks anymore. It won't mount some homemade regular dvds.
Patchburn could fix Tiger superdrives, or so I read, but apparently it "is unnecessary" and won't work with Leopard.
I tried the changing of the language settings and restart fix but that didn't help.
Can someone come up with a fix for this stuff now?

  • New DVD burner not working w/iTunes

Okay, I've been working on this and digging through these forums for awhile now. I'm still stumped. So here we go:
I had a new DVD burner installed. I'm using Nero software which works fine for DVD, data, etc. However, iTunes gives me the "disc burner or software not found" message if I try to burn a disc from iTunes.
I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes (yes, latest version) twice now. No go.
In edit>preferences>advanced>burning CD burner: still shows the old CD-RW.
iTunes will recognize and play prerecorded CDs and ask if I want to import them.
In help>diagnostics>CD/DVD drive tests, after putting in a prerecorded CD as requested: Optical drive detected IS the correct device (D: ASUS DRW-1814BL) BUT I get a red dot with "no audio CD found" yet the songs are showing in the device window (in actual iTunes behind the diagnostic window).

I have uninstalled all virtual drive software, including Daemon Tools, PowerISO, and MagicDisc.
I have followed the article pointed out in an earlier thread involving editing the registry to remove 3rd party filters.
Okay... that's as much info as I can think of. Help?

Do you by any chance have Daemon tools? They are know to cause drive recongnition problems with this error number.

  • DVD drive stopped working after Mavericks install

I have a Macbook Pro (late 08 model) that was running Snow Leopard. I recently did a clean install of Mavericks and since then the DVD drive just spins and ejects discs without being able to read them (doesn't seem to matter what I use. Software, games, audio cds, etc..). It was working fine before installing Mavericks and I can still boot from the DVD drive (old snow leopard boot disc) but it won't read any discs once booted into the OS even though the OS is detecting the drive just not the disc when inserted.
I've tried resetting the NVRAM/PRAM and resetting the SMC as suggested on other forums but like many others with the same issue it didn't help. I also cycled through several drutil commands as suggested to "wake up" the drive but that didn't help any either.
I'm kind of stumped here guys. I could roll back to Snow Leopard but I've got some software thats dropping support so I'd rather be running Mavericks if I can sort out this DVD drive issue. Clearly its not the drive itself since it worked fine before and I can boot from it. Any ideas?

Hrm looks like I might of fixed it. I went back after seeing another post about spamming drutil commands to "wake up" the drive and just spammed them about 20 or so times and the drive started working again.
I'm still very confused as to why it just stopped working within the OS after installing Mavericks (yet I was still able to boot from the DVD just fine). Clearly something is bugged in mavericks. I even came across a post on the apple forums from someone with this issue and it was effecting both his late 08 and early 2013 Macbook Pros.
I'll keep an eye on my own machine to see if it stops working again but for now it seems my drive is "fixed" go figure.

  • Dvd burn stops idvd crashes

Have been having problem when burning dvd, burns so far than quits & notice idvd crash
do not understand what the message means is happening with every dvd burn attempt
Also need to know how to send idvd project to trash / delete when done with it

I had the same problem until I realized I was editing in HD after years of editing Standard DVD video.  My hard drive was formated for 32bit and can only record up to 4 GB per file.  I had to take one of my hard drives and reformat it to the journal setting so there are no blocks which leaves the entire hard drive of a 2TB unit to record those unbeleavable HD movies.  The mov I was trying to take to IDVD was 26GB and it recoreded all the way this time.  I DVD will automatically dreduce it to fit on a standard DVD.
Whats rediculous is that every one records in HD now because they can but give little thought as to how its going to be edited.  Standard DVD looks great when played on a blue ray and no professionals dont want to pay the extra fee to edit and take it to blue ray as many people dont have Blue ray yet.
Other problems can also stop your recording like a bad still photo file or one that is still in a raw state and not formated.
    Hope this helps.
