Cd/dvd drive ejecting discs

all of a sudden my powerbook ejects cds and dvds without reading the media. the motor goes through its few second start up process but spits the disc out. not media related as these are discs that have played before. any ideas?

Have you put the data-side of the CD/DVD down ? This is not meant offending, but some people are just need to turn upside down the CD and it works
Note that unusually shaped CDs cannot be used. Also ensure that the CD/DVD is clean. Can you read them in other drives ?

  • Optical DVD drive ejects any inserted disc and does not work!

I can not read or write certain DVDs in my Mid-2009 MacBook Pro since upgrading to Mountain Lion.
I insert an empty DVD-R (Verbatim) and it is being ejected. I insert a recorded DVD-R (Verbatim) and it is being ejected.
I have tried a commercial Video DVD - (Sony) and that one actually did work ... so I am pretty clueless - I can not write any DVD right now.
In the forum I have found many posts regarding this issue under Lion already.
However, my drive used to work fine under Lion and I was able to watch / record DVDs etc.
Now, it is no longer working and I can not use it. Does anyone know how to solve this?
So far I have found the following hints (which did not work for me):
ALL OF THESE THINGS DID NOT WORK:
    1) Reset the PRAM (https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379)
    2) Uninstall all virtual machines (Virtual Box, etc.)
    3) SMC Reset (https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964)
some people talk about it being an issue with the 64 bit kernel and that you should try to reboot into 32bit (holding down 32 on startup)
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3770
others blame it on the UDF format (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3413998)
There are too many articles in the forums about this - more to make this a random issue.
The most disturbing thing to me is that multiple of the people in these threads contacted Apple and in the end where told, it's probably a bug... now why is this - obviously critical bug - not being resolved, yet ?

the list could probably be continued, but I'll leave it at this

I also had the same problem shortly after upgrading. My optical DVD drive ejects any disk I put in. This started about 2 months ago.
I just got back from the Apple store, after setting up an appointment, and they told me that my life is horrible because my MacBook Pro is no longer under warranty as of 32 days ago. This is really BS.
However just like any other company that treats me with poor customer service I just take my future business elsewhere and make sure not to recommend them to any friends and family - as well as tell them about my horrid experience.

  • HT1338 my dvd player ejects disc when inserted

my dvd player ejects disc when inserted on my macbook pro running on 10.8.4 OS X

Sounds like it could be a problem with your DVD drive. Usually it would be a problem with the lens. Since as far as I can tell it is ejecting discs right away, the usual fix of a cleaning disc is not possible.
If it is a slot loader like the offical Apple SuperDrive, you may be able to try a crude clean with the Wii Lens Cleaning Kit, although designed for the Nintendo Wii, it should work to a degree with other slot loaders.
Due to the design of the cleaner, it should remain in the drive until it is time to remove it. Though usually a dirty lens will still read some discs.
However, if the lens is sufficiently clean then the only other possibilities are a calibration problem or a hardware failure.
Certain lower quality drives can deviate from optimal calibration of the read laser over time, though with some drives it is possible to fix this, the fix has the potential to do more harm than good.
If it's a hardware failure, whether it can be fixed depends upon the type of fault, but new external drives are cheaper than most repair costs these days.
I'm not 100% familar with how OS X handles Disc drives, so I can't rule out the possibility of a software issue.

  • DVD Drive Ejects on Bootup

I have a PowerBook Pismo (Firewire and bronze keyboard). OS X 10.3.9 with all the latest secutity upgrades.
When the machine starts up, the DVD drive ejects whether or not there is a disk in it.
This makes it difficult to boot from the install CD to run Disk Utility.
Has anyone had this problem? Are ther any know fixes

    Sy B,
Disconnect all USB devices including a USB mouse, then restart...see if the drive tray still pops open. Some known troublemakers are Adesso Tru-Form keyboard, Griffin iMate USB/ADB adapter, Keyspan Twin serial, and possibly others.
Test each device individually, then see if updated software is available.

  • On boot, both DVD drives eject - any way to prevent this?

when I boot, both DVD drives eject. Not a huge deal, but fairly annoying.

    Hi Tim,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  It sounds like resetting the computer's PRAM might help with this:

  • DVD Drive ejecting my disc

i have a new Mac Book Pro and I'm trying to load MS Office. I've plugged in the DVD drive, but after I've inserted the disc, it ejects after a couple of seconds and doesn't load. Can anyone help ... please

    Carolina,
If it's new, just exchange it at the Genius Bar. If it's not, it sounds like the lens may be dirty. You can try wrapping a microfiber cloth around a credit card and carefully sliding it in and out a few times, or a cleaning DVD.

  • My iMac's DVD drive launches discs across the room when I eject them.

    Hi.
I was wondering if anyone else has ever had this problem, and also, if anyone might have a solution for it.
As of recently, [I don't know the exact date that the problem began, but it's been awhile], whenever I eject a DVD from my iMac's DVD drive [by either ejecting it in Finder, or by pressing the keyboard's Eject button], instead of just coming out halfway like it used to, the drive now launches the DVD across the room.
I'm starting to get annoyed by this problem, especially when I burn something and am not around to catch the disc when it comes flying out, and later find it lying on the floor in the corner of my room.
So does anybody know if there is anything that I can do about this?.
I did that online-chat thing on Apple's website, and the guy told me that I have to bring it in to a service centre, and then disconnected.
I'd like to avoid doing that if possible.
Also, I don't even know of any [or if there even ARE any] that are in Montreal, Quebec, [which is where I live].
Oh, and I bought an AppleCare Protection Plan with the iMac when I bought it last January [2005].
Soooo... Does that do anything for me?.
    Thanks so much!.
    -Steven.

    20" 1.8gHz iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   The DVD drive is a Matshita UJ-825 DVD-R drive.

    Hi Steven,
I had the same thing happening with mine. When I was on with Apple Care, they asked me if I would be willing to send them my computer in exchange for a new one (refurbished). It turned out they new about the problem & are trying to figure it out with computers that are actually experiencing the issue. This was just a couple of weeks ago, so you might call & check about it. They cover all shipping costs.
    Good luck

  • Help - DVD drive eating discs

I'm sick over this. Have seldom used the DVD drive on my iMac 17" FP--so it should be in excellent condition, but today, when trying to play an audio CD, the drive literally ate the disc. It made a ferocious rasping sound. I ejected the media. The bottom had been so severely abraded it looked as if it had been spun on a lathe.
No, this machine is no longer under warranty. I dare not imagine how much Apple would charge to fix it.
How can I repair this? Is it even possible? Might I be better off attaching an external DVD drive via FireWire?
    Appreciate hearing from you,
    JLS

    xfm,
I too have the exact same error messages, but with a UJ-846 drive and Verbatim DVD-R 100-pack spindles.
My drive reads CD/DVDs OK, no problem, but gives problems when I put in a blank disc. I had this problem a few weeks ago with CDs as well, but then opened up the Mac mini and 'cleaned' the Superdrive with some compressed air, and that seem to have sorted the problem then.
Today though, for some reason NOTHING works, I even left the Mac mini 'naked' (without casing) while trying ten times and blowing air in between each time.
I have two batches of Verbatim DVD-R (100packs) bought in two different stores about a month or so apart, and one batch of CD-Rs that are yet another make. All of them with the same problem.
I think this is a hardware problems and it absolutely stinks that it only happens after the Apple warranty has expired. I've done about a 100+ disks on the Mac mini, which in my mind is hardly any at all, so it can't be 'worn out'.
Any ideas, or anyone with leverage at Apple that can kick some a*s
PS. I also have a MacBook Pro C2D with a busted spindle in the SuperDrive (UJ-857D), so me no like SuperDrives very much.

  • Drive ejects discs

So I'm a new Mac user and I've had my new Macbook for a day now and I go to put a DVD in the drive and it takes it in, makes a noise for a about a second then ejects the disc. Doesn't matter what kind of disc....Any suggestions?

    Hello billyrhelms:
Welcome to HP's forum. Well I see you found HP's cheep CD/DVD drive. This is normal behavior how wonderfull. CDs and DVDs have codes unfortunately HP Touchsmart will not open the discs. You have to use HP's disks or Mexwell  brand disks. Now for movies you have to pay for this updatehttp://www.cyberlink.com/prog/update/v2/update.jsp?fileTypeId=1&PRODUCTNAME=TouchSmart&PRODUCTVERSIO...__ Not cheap very expesive $84.00 . If yoi are having problems with software disc. Insert disc then close that useless tiny window witch I find it very annoying.  Left click on (Edrive select properties and choose witch Windows to open the disc in. The computer will eject non compatible disks and softawre disks
This is one reason why people are switching to Apple computers or to other brand computers.  Please read forum. This is not the first time this subject was posted. Please click on Kudos if I have answered your question. Thank you frrw.

  • Cd/dvd drive ejecting disk

Hi if someone could please help me my cd/dvd drive was working fine now it is spinning and spits otu the disc. My harddrive recently crashed and I had to take it and the hard drive was replaced , that is the only change the computer has had so far. Please if someone could help I would really appreciate it, thanks

    See if this helps:
The drive accepts discs but they do not mount or are automatically ejected
Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. For example a "combo drive" can read a DVD-R and burn a CD-R however it cannot burn a DVD-R. The utility System Profiler may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.

  • Disfunctional DVD Drive (ejects all DVD's)

Hi, there's something wrong with my sister's DVD drive on her mac mini. She bought the computer two years ago and this problem has been going on for two months. Whenever she puts a DVD in the drive it "thinks" for a moment and then ejects it. It doesn't even load it onto the desktop. The strange thing is, when I installed Mac OS 10.4 yesterday I was able to do it from this drive, and for a little while after, DVD's were working on it. A bit later, a DVD became stuck inside and she had to restart. But now, as usual, she has to use an external drive. Anybody got any ideas about this? I appreciate anything. Thanks.

    I'm so sorry.
    I have the same drive.
Let me put it this way: google Matshita UJ-835F and see what comes up. It isn't good.
Basically, everyone I have encountered with this drive has had problem after problem with it. I've done everything that can be done and it looks like I will be buying an external drive once Christmas shopping is over.
I am more than a little bitter.
If you're still under warranty or have Applecare you should be able to get a replacement.
I don't find it a coincidence that the name of this drive has a certain four letters in it...

  • My CD Rom, DVD Drive says "Disc is full when it's brand new.

I have downloaded burner software. Autoplay does not show. My CD Rom/DVD drive will read a disc but will not format or burn a disc. A new disc will show as full or no disc. I'm using Windows 7 Professional as my OS. and I have downloaded A Shampoo, burnaware free and expressburn software.

What type of DVD are you attempting to burn:  DVD -R or DVD +R?  Some burners will accept either format but some are type specific.  Try using the other format (-R if currently using +R; +R if currently using -R) and see if that helps...

  • HT3964 I'm having issues with my DVD drive rejecting discs.

  • Dvd player ejects discs

When I insert a cd or dvd in the cd/dvd player it trys to start playing the cd/dvd then ejects it after about 15-20 seconds

You can try a DVD lens cleaner disk.  It may work if the optics are dirty.  If that does not work,  look at this:

  • Mac mini optical drive ejecting discs

    Hello, All
I'm using a Mac mini late 2006 model (1.83GHz Intel Core Duo, 1GB RAM, Snow Leopard 10.6.1) and a few days ago the machine started ejecting optical discs without reading/mounting them. Once a disc is inserted, the machine whirs a but and then ejects the disc.
The problem affects all discs - blank CD, DVD, published CD and DVD.
Can anyone offer any help as to why? I've not had any problems with the optical drive before and have used it reasonably regularly because prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard and plugging in an external hard drive to use Time Machine, I was using Back Up - which obviously requires me to use the optical drive.
I must say I'm a bit confused as to why. The machine has not been dropped or even moved since the drive has gone from functioning to not working. I keep my software up to date. I have heard that Snow Leopard seems to be causing the odd strange issue but not come across this one. The drive has functioned properly since the SL install a month or so ago.
Any help or advice is really welcome.
One last thing (sorry!), and this is probably completely unrelated but I thought I'd mention it so that all info is out there. A couple of weeks ago (also post-SL install) my wireless Mighty Mouse stopped functioning properly. It wasn't the batteries or dirt, etc. I could move the pointer around the screen but just not click on anything. I thought at first that the Finder had crashed but upon using a replacement mouse, it became apparent what the problem was. I tried re-booting, switching the mouse off and on, the usual stuff. Few days later, I tried the Mighty Mouse again and it worked fine.
    Thanks in advance, all.
    Matt

    Hi there
Apologies for the delay in coming back here, been kind of busy.
I tried the canned air solution and unfortunately, it didn't work. However, having spoken to a number of people about this since my posting and the help posted to this forum, using the canned air generally comes highly recommended because it usually does solve such problems.
So, I've also looked for a cleaning disc and am still searching (to be fair, I've not yet looked very hard) but the problem seems to be that most stores sell cleaning discs designed for drives with a CD tray, rather than the slot loading mini approach (which also has fabric to held clean the disc on its way in, rather negating the benefit of using any fluid or gel on the disc).
I'm going to keep looking and will post back here to let you know if I have any luck or not. Do try the canned air solution - it may work, also please post to let us know if you solve it or not. I fear that there's a proper problem with the drive...
Good luck and thanks, All. Will post again.
    Regards,
    Matt
