CD/DVD Drive Failure?

Hello. I have a Pavilion dv9700 notebook running Windows 7. My problem is that I think my CD/DVD drive has failed. The computer won't read any disks, it doesn't even spin the disk as though it's trying to read it. We've tried to update the driver which didn't solve anything. When you look under Devices at the drive is says the device is working properly which obviously is not the case. But if you go under Computer it shows the hard drive (C and the Recovery drive (D but the CD/DVD drive is not listed. This has happened before and after talking to someone at work my husband did something (which he can't remember now) which fixed the drive...for a while at least. This time he spoke with someone else who is familiar with computers who told him the drive has probably failed and we probably need to replace the drive. After searching the HP website I can't find anything that tells me the part # for a replacement drive. When I enter my serial # it tells me there are no matches. So, I'm wondering 1. Is the drive bad? and 2. How do I know what to replace it with? Thanks!

I got my also cannot read. But if you replace it call hp 1800-22728164 opt. 3. they can tell you how much for dvd drive. I thought you can buy new dvd drive will cheaper than you bring your shop for them tell you what wrong + part + labor...........

DVD drive failure on some DVD brands

I've been using Taiou Yuden DVD-R's for a while on my late 2009 Mac mini (Pioneer DVD-RW DVRTS08).
Now suddenly they fail to burn (Toast Titanium 11.1) with errors like:
The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = HARDWARE ERROR (or MEDIUM ERROR)
Sense Code = 0x44, 0xD9 (or 0x0C)
INTERNAL TARGET FAILURE (or WRITE ERROR)
The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST
Sense Code = 0x21, 0x02
BUFFER UNDERRUN
Previously burned Taiou Yuden DVDs also fail to mount (the Mac mini spits them out or the drive unsuccessfully tries to read them and the only escape is to reboot with the mouse down so the DVD is ejected).
But _TDK_ DVDs burn and mount just OK. Also CDs mount OK.
The offending Taiou Yuden DVDs mount and burn OK on my old 2004 PowerBook as well as on a newer 2010 MacBook.
I have Reset PMU/SMC and the PRAM, verified the boot disk, repaired permissions, and cleaned the DVD drive with compressed air.
I suspect the DVD drive's laser is failing so it can't burn or read Taiou Yuden DVDs while it still can manage TDK DVDs. Could that be correct?

Fortunately, even if this doesn't work, an external drive is a fairly inexpensive option to work around your possibly failing internal optical drive.

Trying to burn pictures in DVD+RW disc using Power2Go 10. After copying, during the veryfing stage the message says"unsuccessful", and the error messages, on different attempts are OxEB020BAO, OxEB020BEA, Ox EBO20BE2 etc.
I have also tried burning DVD-R disc but without success.
The CD DVD drive is: CDDVD TS-L633N. The drive can not read a new Photoshop 13 installation disc but reads OK the previously copied CD and DVD discs.
I tried the latest HP diagnostic tool , downloaded on a USB flash drive, to check the hardwear, and here the error message is "Failure ID: GTXCHK-51R7HB-XD0021-6HNW03."
I have also tried to burn discs using windows explorer, and after burning, at the final stage, it says "unsuccessful".
Copying songs etc on a CD drive works OK.
Please can any one help?

You are going to need to replace the drive. It is not terribly difficult or expensive. Post back if you want to try to do it and we can link you to the proper Manual and if you tell us where you live (country) we can tell you where to buy it at a good price.

Satellite A200-1vp with Vista - CD/DVD drive failure code 39

Hi,
I have been burning and watching DVDs on my Satellite A200-1vp, with vista, since February, the last time I burned anything was a couple of weeks ago.
Suddenly there's a problem, no response when I load a disc and my divx player tells me no recorder found.
When I search in the device manager I get the message " windows cannot load the driver for this hardware" (code 39) " driver is corrupted or missing".
I tried uninstalling it and using the Toshiba upper/lower limit filter repair tool but on restart it still failed to install.
Should i try the Toshiba Recovery Disc and loose a lot of unbacked up programs/files, as last resort?
Would that work?
Anybody got any ideas?

You should firstly access the device manager and should remove the CD/DVD drive from the device list.
Then should access the registry and should remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Reboot the notebook and check if the CD/DVD drive would work again!

An Odd Experience - CD/DVD drive failure??

I just had something odd happen with my CD/DVD drive and was wondering if anyone could comment on it, and perhaps clear some things up for a poor computer-illiterate soul.
For reasons that I don't understand, after importing a music CD to my iTunes library, my computer wouldn't eject the disk until I used Disk Utility to eject it. After that, it refused to recognize other music CDs, DVDs, blank CDs, and software CDs. The only way I could eject them was again through Disk Utility. Then the same thing happened with my external drive. I looked online and couldn't find any answers. I then restarted the computer and found everything back to normal. My questions are these; is this a serious problem? What should I do if this should this happen again? Has this happened anyone else? And if so, what did you do?

Hi.. I have a lady that I take care of her computer needs and lately she's having problems with her CD drive not burning her cd's .. we tried lowering the speed of burning, but nothing good came out of it... So, I'm seeking for any other similar problems/solutions..

HD and DVD Drive failure

I was on my computer when it froze. I tried to reboot it but I had the screen with the question mark/finder folder. I put in my install CD but it wouldn't boot from the CD. I tried to eject the CD: eject key, mouse button during startup, open firmware but none worked.
I held down option during start up but it would't recognize anything: HD, cd, or netboot.
it failed to boot in target disk mode. and it wouldnt boot from another computer into target disk mode or external HD.
I was able to hold down N and netboot from a Mac OSX server. While in netboot, i opened disk utility and it didn't detect the hard drive.
So, in conclusion I realized my dvd drive and HD are not recognized.
Do you think this might involve the logicboard or something else?
What would be the best route to get it up and running again?

DVD Drive Failure

In the last month I have had a lot of trouble with DVD/CD Combo Drive.
When I do a Fresh Install from DVD or CD there is no Problem, But when I want to Play DVD then it Stalls usually using Ubuntu and VLC.
How can I check it Online?
We had severe Dusty weather two Weeks ago.
But I am not sure what Problem is.

As I understand your laptop DVD drive cannot read the discs.
You may uninstall the DVD drive driver from the device manager and restart the system.
After the laptop restart it will take the fresh driver and then you can try using the discs.
If the issue persist then you can contact the support centre if the laptop is in warranty as it could be issue with the drive.

DVD drive failure at Satellite 2450-101

Hi again guys...
I have another problem with my old Toshiba Satellite 2450-101 laptop which I hope you can help me with.
The original DVD-rom drive - a Teac DW-224E - went 'off the radar' a couple of times about a year ago and would only re-appear in My Computer after a re-boot but it would then quickly disappear again.
It was puzzling as the drive was still listed in Device Manager as working properly.
It would then take a full re-install to get it back again when the process would start all over again.
Now during the boot up process a message appears at the top of the screen saying 'Eide error'..
I bought a new brown-box replacement DVD-RW dual layer drive from PC World- a Sony IA2604H - and installed it but it is exactly the same but this time it is quoted in the Device Manager as a 'SCSI CD-rom device'....which it most certainly isn't.
In both cases the Drives are completely dead and will not even eject the trays.
Needless to say this is driving me nuts.
Can you suggest anything?

Can you boot from bootable CD's?
If yes, then try removing the upperfilters and lowerfilters:

If you cannot boot from CD's, then either:
1) The ODD connector or another component on the mainboard is faulty/loose.
2) The original Teac ODD is faulty, and the new Sony is not compatible (has incorrect Master/Slave settings)

DVD Drive Failure to Calibrate power lever....

I'm having an issue with my dvd burner. I've tried both Toast Titanium & Disk Utility and when trying to burn data in Toast and an .dmg file in Disk Utility I get "The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media". What can I do to get my burner back to "normal"? I'm close to taking the whole thing out to a field and using it for baseball "practice".

I was able to get the dvd lens working again. I had found some postings on other sites about the same issue, and some people had mentioned that using a lens cleaner had allowed them to burn discs again.
Therefore I used one that I picked up a while back and that cleared up the dvd lens. I may have to replace the lens in another year or 2 but not just yet.

Mac Mini DVD Drive fail and upgrading to Snow Leopard

Hey, my Mac Mini has a dvd drive failure, ir reads cd's but just spits out dvd's. It no longer burns cd's either.
The main question is, will I be able to install Snow Leopard from an external dvd drive? As I am thinking about getting one as a burner/player instead of paying sky high prices for a new superdrive to be fitted in the Mini.

There's probably more than one slot-loading drive model that will work in your Mini, and you may even gain a new capability, like dual-layer DVD burning capability, if you do a little homework on the models that will work for your Mini.

Faulty DVD Drive? Some questions pls.

My dad bought an HP Compaq nx9420 Pavillion notebook a while back. When he got it, he had problems with the DVD drive straight away. On the first startup, when you're meant to create backup discs of the OS, the notebook stopped halfway through the backup with what seemed to be a DVD drive failure. I don't know if there was an error message displayed at the time, it just stopped copying.
The drive has since given continuous problems. It fails to recognise discs often, and when it does recognise them ,it makes the most awful noise when reading them (somewhere between a grinding noise and slipping belt sound). Also, when it does play a DVD, the sound playing through the speakers is horrendous (like it's not decoding it properly and it's scrambled).
First question: based on the info above (which isn't very much, I apologise), does it sound to you guys like the drive is toast? I'm no IT expert, but my first impression was that the drive was faulty to start with.
The notebook was taken back to the store where it was purchased, and sent to HP, but neither made any attempt to fix the problem. So my dad's stuck with it.
Recently I tried to find out about replacement drives so that I could fix it for the old man. The parts salesman I spoke to wasn't particularly helpful, and only offered one particular drive from HP.
Second question: what are my options for replacing the drive? Are there a number of compatible drives, or am I forced to go with an HP?

I am having a similar issue with my Pavilion's dvd drive as well as on my parent's compaq presarios's dvd drive. Both drive make the grinding and belt slipping noise. Both of them fail to read dvds or cds often and require multiple ejects and retrys, but will both eventually read the disc. On my pavilion, when having trouble reading a disc and you try to mess with it under My Computer, it locks up My Computer and when i kill the process in task manager, it also kills explorer and I must reboot windows. Any ideas why these dvd drives will not work 100% of the time?

Hard drive and dvd drive - simultaneous failure

I'm running a 2yr 8 month old PowerPC. G4 1.67ghz with 2gb RAM. Until today, it's been pretty much faultless. I have had issues in the past related to installing updates from Mac. ie. on two separate occasions I took updates only to find that the machine wouldn't re-boot. Issues were resolved using install disks, disk warrior and/or repeated booting.
Anyway - today:
I installed the update (Security Update 2008-003 (power PC)). Restarted and all was fine. Sometime later, after considerable use, the machine went to sleep. When I tried to wake it it wouldn't do anything. Eventually a blank grey screen came up with the file icon which alternately flashed a question mark and the finder icon.
I looked on these boards for suggestions. The best one seemed to be boot from the install disks. Unfortunately there is already an audio disk in the drive. I looked for suggestions to eject but none worked. Eventually, I plugged in my bootable clone of my harddrive. The machine took matters into its own hands and booted from it.
Once up and running I ran disk utility to check the status of the internal drive. It doesn't come up in the display. Nor does it show on the desktop or the in the finder. Which suggests to me that it's died.
I then looked to see if I could eject the cd from the DVD drive. i found no icon for the cd on the desktop or in the finder. I checked the "about this mac page" and it tells me "No burning device was found." This in turn suggests that the DVD burner has failed along with the hard drive.
My immediate thought would be that both parts have just reached the end of their time and given up the ghost. I'm a bit surprised/suspicious though that they seem to have done so in the same moment. And on the day that I downloaded a Security Update.
Has anyone had a similar problem, if so what did you do? Can anyone suggest anything I may not have thought of to find my missing HD and DVD burner? Would I be best off going to the Mac store in London? Ultimately, is replacing them myself a realistic proposition?

Dvd drive in early 2009 failure

I have an early 2009 24" iMac. The DVD drive in it failed around 16 months ago and had it replaced free of charge with Applecare. While upgrading to Mountain Lion today I discovered the newer drive has failed. Doesn't read or write DVD's but regular CD's still work.
My Applecare expired back in May. What is Apple's policy on replacement parts? Am I out of luck? I'm thinking I don't want to get caught with failed apple parts anymore being !00's of miles from the closest Apple Store. So I hate to say it, but I may end up getting a budget PC and have a Large iMac doorstop.

Carbon Copy Cloner is probably the easiest way to setup and copy everything from one drive to another.
It also gives you a couple of options for moving everything from the old to the new drive.
1. Clone your existing Internal HDD to an External Hard Drive and then swap out the Internal Hard Drives. Then Boot from the External HD and clone it back to the New Internal HDD.
2. Swap out the HDDs and put the iMac's original HDD into an External Enclosure. Then boot from the original iMac drive in the Enclosure and clone it to the new HDD.
Personally I prefer the first method, because it gives you a backup copy in case something goes wrong.

Mac Mini HDD failure, no CD/DVD drive...How do I boot?

My hard drive failed on my Mac Mini 2011. I don't have a CD/DVD drive on it. How do I boot to the disk utility ore restore utility?
I downloaded and installed the mac remote boot on a thumb drive, using my wifes mac. I've tried rebooting my mac with the thumb drive in and nothing but grey screen. I tried by holding down the Command button, nothing but grey screen. I tried by holding down the Command+S, nothing but grey screen. I tried by holding down the Command+R, nothing but grey screen.
The hard drive is making a bunch of loud clicking noises.
If I buy a new drive and install it, how do I get the OS onto it and get it up and running, if the Command, Command+R do not work?

Once your hard drive crashes there is nothing you can really do. The recovery partition is on your hard drive do the Command keys will not find the recovery partition. It will also check your usb, dvd, and firewire ports. If there is nothing there, then it is just a grey screen. So....
1st Option bring you Mac Mini, after you replace your hard drive, to an Apple Store and have them reinstall the OS. They will not charge you for this or least they did not for me when my hard drive crashed. The only fall back is that they will only put the OS that the computer came with. So, if it came with Lion, Apple will only install Lion.
2nd Option is to find a friend with a Mac (any mac) and have him/her create a usb boot drive that has the OS. If you google "OS X Boot Drive" you will find a bunch of how to sites. You will need atleast 8GB usb drive.
3rd Option is to buy the Apple branded Lion USB drive. Not my most favorite but it is an option.
