Cd/dvd drive making noise

Hi all!
I just got a brand new 20-inch Alu iMac with Leopard installed last month as an early Christmas present, my very first mac and love it. I have a couple of questions I thought I'd throw it to you experts out there.
Firstly, the cd/dvd drive is making a whirring noise, to me it sounded like a plane taking off, whenever I put in a disc. I have tried a preinstalled cd that came with my mac. I have read on the forum that some cd/dvd make noise. Should I be worried about this before my warranty expires?
Secondly, I am not sure if it is related. I tried to burn my playlist on iTunes to CD. It took multiple discs as I have a long playlist. After the first disc, I put in the next blank one. But the issue is after I finished burning the playlist and putting the cd in to test, the first cd has no info on it but the rest of the cds are okay. I have burned cds from iTunes on my old pc before and did not have any problems. Are both of these issues related? Do I need to take the mac into an Apple store and get it checked out?
Thanks in advance for any help

Hi Bbolin! Thanks for your response and suggestion to go to iTunes forum. I did have a look over there and there is a thread going on on this. Apparently there is a bug in the os. So, as soon as I get some more cds I will try burning at a lower speed. Thanks again for your help. Have a great 2008.

  • Dvd drive making noises and spitting out dvd

I don't know what's going on but whenever I put in a dvd the dvd drive makes a lot of noise which doesn't sound good, and sometimes it spits out the dvd or shuts the dvd program down and then my computer freezes on a black screen and i have to shut down my computer by turning it off. =(
This computer is about 8 months old and I don't think there should be any issues from my end. I have never dropped it or spilled anything on it. I unfortunatley never bought teh apple care....i know dumb! but nonetheless it's not bought. Does anyone know how or what i can do to resolve this issue besides not playing a dvd? Thanks any advice helps!

It sounds as if there's a mechanical failure with your SuperDrive. Since you're still under warranty, I would take the machine into an Apple Store or an AASP and have them diagnose and fix the problem.
    Good luck,

  • DVD drive making noises

    Hi,
Every once in a while, I heard the DVD drive make the noise that you get when you are inserting or ejecting a dvd.  There is nothing in there.  I just inserted one and ejected it with no problem.  It seems to work fine, but I am getting those noises every once in a while.  My iMac has the latest updates as the Update Manager says I am up to date.
    What could this be?
    Thank you,
    Gloria

  • Spillages/CD/DVD drive making noises

After spilling some lemonade on my iBook G4, my combo drive has decided to make some weird noises. It makes the noise like when a cd is inserted into it.
    What could be the problem?
Since the spillage, some of the keys on the keyboard went sticky and now it has moved to my latch. Now do I risk opening up the iBook and cleaning it up or do I leave it?
    Thanks.

Not being an adventurous person, I'd advise letting a qualified Apple Service Dealer open it up and see what's wrong.

Are you sure that's not your CD/DVD drive? If not, and you are still worried or if something goes wrong you could get a Genius Bar Reservation at your local Apple Store.

  • Optical drive making noise when waking from sleep

    Hello everyone.
I recieved my MacBook about three weeks ago, and haven't had any problems with it. Hope I never will have.
One thing that bothers me, however, is that when it wakes from sleep, the DVD-drive makes a noise - as if trying to read a disc that isn't there. The drive is empty.
This is beginning to get annoying, as I often use my Macbook in small classrooms, where being quiet is a virtue.
You have any idea what I can do to stop this madness? Hopefully it can be solved via. software, but what say you?
    Macbook 13" White   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1 GB

It's normal. I believe the reason why it happens is that most drives, by default, when they have power applied to them, they start scanning to see if a disk is inserted. By this time (machine turns on), the OS or the drivers are not loaded to tell the unit NOT to scan, therefore it happens. Now if the OS or the drivers are loaded they could probably prevent it from doing that. Obviously that's only when the OS is already running and thus the machine is already on.
Luckily it's only once, but these kinds of issues have a long history to them... For example, back in the Amiga days, the machine would do automatic detection of floppy disks, and the way it did it was by moving the heads to a negative track, which would cause a click every second or so. Extremely smart of the engineers, because the drive wasn't supposed to support such functionality. At the same time it was extremely annoying to have the click happen! Finally some guys wrote some software to fix that, before too many people went insane from the clicking
Luckily our superdrives don't do something like that every second

  • IMac DVD Drive--Loud Noises

Recently my iMac DVD drive has begun to make loud noises when a disc is inserted. The loud whirring, spinning, and clicking noises last for about a minute to two minutes before the DVD finally ejects (after many attempts). Nothing plays, the sounds just automatically start. I've read that lower quality/damaged discs can cause similar sounds, but I have used two different DVDs and get the same result when one has worked perfectly before. Is anyone aware of what the problem might be or how to fix it?
    Thank you!

AppleCare's Express Lane. Do note that if you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, they'll do the repair onsite.

  • DVD drive makes noise whenever my macbook is moved???

6 months without any problem then suddendly any time I move my MB there is a noise (like an eject noise) comming from my dvd drive. I don't have any CD or DVD in the drive.
Any idea? Is my dvd drive going bad?
    Thanks

Are you sure it isn't the hard drive's sudden motion detector temporarily parking the HD heads?

  • Macbok pro froze & won't reboot. CD Drive Making noise

My Macbok Pro from may 2010 froze while using safari. I tried doing a forced shutdown and restart using the power button. It would not reboot. It comes up with a white/grey screen with the apple in the middle and no spinning wheel. It sticks here and does nothing else, except the CD drive makes noise like it's searching for something and is beeping. I don't think I have a CD in the drive. If there is one in there it's just an MP3 disc that's been there a log time. Either way I can't eject if it is in there. Just a quiet beep from the drive. It keep cycling and does not stop. The only thing I can do is turn the mac off with the power button and try again. I've tried booting in single-user-mode with command-s. No joy.  I'm stuck. Any ideas?

As the drive was not detected:
    Reset the SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Reset the PRAM and then test: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/26871.html

  • CD / DVD drive making funny noises....

Not the most tech savvy of posts I know, but when I insert a DVD disc into my drive, it just whirrrs, and clicks, and after about a minute, spits it out.
    Any ideas??
    Thanks
    MArk

The drive is making funny noises because it's trying to read the disk. If it can't read the disk, it will spit it back out. Try wiping the disk from the center out with a cloth to remove any fingerprints. Hope this helps!

  • CD/DVD Drive making awful noise

    Hi All,
my Macbook Pro has all of a sudden started making a strange noise when I try and burn stuff onto disk. I insert the disk and it starts to almost 'rev up' uncontrollably, its almost like its working overtime but I have only just started having this problem.
It gets to a point where the noise and spinning inside makes me think the Mac is going to blow up, its that bad. The only way to sort it is to shut down the mac forcefully.
Does anyone else have this problem, and if so do you have any suggestions what it could be?
P.S it only does it when burning disks...
    Thanks all

    thank you,
I may need some more technical support by the looks of it.

  • CD drive making noise

When inserting a CD into the CD drive it makes a loud grinding noise .... Does anybody else have this issue just bought last week ....

You have 14 days from the date of purchase to exchange your computer.  I would not get it repaired.  Get a new Macbook Pro!

  • Removing the DVD drive fixed my 5x blink boot issues

    Hey,
in the past few months or so i increasingly ran into the problem of my Probook 6470b refusing to boot and blinking 5 times which points to a system board malfunction.
I have had this PC for 1.5 years now, and in the beginninig this ocurred maybe once in a month, so i didn't care much about it. This increased drastically lately - statistically speaking my laptop refused to boot every fifth time or about every 20th when trying to force it by powering it up and down continuously.
The issue can be described as the following:
Caps Lock and Num Lock flashing in patterns of five, the screen displaying the HP logo and the DVD drive making some intense noises. After two minutes the PC usually continued to boot through. Alternatively one could remove the battery and try it again.
Due to the drastically increased occurances of this i contacted my countrys HP support and the store, but both refused to look into it because of the german 'revisal of the burden of proof' after six months. So i deciced to look into it myself.
This issue seems to be quite common accross a wide range of HP laptops, with some weird suggestions on how to fix it on the internet. In my opinion you have to differentiate between faulty soldering connections or burnt through chips and my described issue.
Similar accounts can for example be found here: [1] [2] [3] [4]
As this issue occurs on business laptop variants still on sale i think HP should be quite interesting in fixing this.
After a long preamble, here's the fix i found:
because the DVD drive made some noises usually not heard when booting as expectedi removed my Drive.
I tried powering the laptop on 30 times directly afterwards without problems and have been running this for 1.5 weeks or 25 successful power ups now (i kept a tally list). If it should fail eventually i will update this post.
Without the dvd drive the laptop looks a bit ghetto and is quite prone to dust, but i am thinking of buying a dummy drive that can be used to mount a second HDD.
As this issue increased after time my guess is that this is because of some BIOS update that assumes an error when the DVD drive isn't responding fast enough on boot.
Could a HP engineer please look into this?
I have the B6P73EA variant running BIOS 68ICE Ver. F.61 of 01/21/2015 with a DVD Drive manufactured in January 2013 by PLDS; P/N 6757534-HC1
    Thanks very much!<script src="chrome://YTAutoHDDE/content/YTAutoHDDE.js" type="application/javascript" charset="UTF-8"></script>

    Probook 6470B is the model.
As part of the POST process the computer will poll the drives and it is not unexpected that a bad optical drive will cause the whole process to hang before the computer boots. That is normal behavior. This is a peer to peer Forum by the way and the HP Engineers (other than those who choose to participate) are not monitoring the activities here.
I am glad you figured out the problem. A replacement DVD drive should not be too expensive or, as you suggest, you can use an optical to hard drive adapter. I believe HP also makes a blank for that space which ought to be really cheap.

  • G50-70: empty DVD-drive clicking and freezing other drives for about 30 seconds all the time

Hello board. Big problem. Seem to be the only one having this after searching the board:
Brand new G50-70: When using OS from the SSD or using OS from the SSD and doing things with a USB-drive, the empty internal DVD-drive making clicking sound and sometimes freezing SSD read/write operation for about 30 seconds but all the time freezing USB-storage read/write operation for about 30 seconds.
When freezing there's always clicking. But when clicking there's not always freezing except when using USB-storage.
    OS is Win81-64.
An example scenario: connect USB stick, open terminal, type diskpart, dvd-drive clicks and freezes opening of diskpart for about 30 seconds, then the same may or may not happen when entering commands like clear the stick and format the stick.
Any clues, why I have this issue? Thank you very much for reading.

    hi georg43,
it's possible that there's a software running on startup that's accessing the ODD when the machine is being used (especially if the ODD LED blinks when it's being accessed)..
To check, you can perform a clean boot to temporarily disable apps & services running on startup. If the machine functions properly on a clean boot, you will need to enable the startup services/programs that you have disabled in groups of two or three (trial and error) to find the culprit. You can start by enabling the lenovo services and apps first followed by the Intel ones and observe.
In addition, you can also try to disable the DVD-drive under device manager and observe.

  • T410 DVD Drive Problem

My T410 is annoying the hell out of me! My DVD drive keeps turning on and off, every 30 second or so. The following message keeps coming up:
'The HL-DT-SD-DVDRAM-GU10N device can now be savely removed from the computer'
as this happens, the DVD drive makes noise. This appears to only happen when the computer is running on batteries. Any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks,

It may not be seated all the way. Push the release lever. A tab will pop out. Pull the tab to release the drive. Wait for the unplugged messages to stop. Firmly reinsert the drive, and push the tab in. There should be a clear click.
