Cd/dvd drive no longer in bios-satellite a75 s206

I searched around here for a fix, guess I'm stuck-drive works in two other laptops, recognized as dvd drive, plays dvd's-tried the microsoft fix, but the filters mentioned don't exist in my registry in the location that's given-cdgone was no help-downloaded and installed the drivers given on toshibas' site for this model-bios was done as well-nothing was working, so I tried a new motherboard-same problem-hope someone can shed some light on this-have the system recovery disc, but it's of no use without a drive-please help...

It is a bad piece of hardware. You have eliminated all other possibilities. You need to replace the optical drive. In the meantime you can install the software across a network by making the optical drive on another computer within the network shared and access the files on the disk from the laptop. Or you can get a usb dvd drive or you can copy the contents of the cd onto a flash drive and install from there.

After recently installing itunes on my new PC running windows 8, the CD/DVD drives no longer works, gives a code 19 message. Seems itunes is impacting the registry of the DVD drive. What is best solution to keep running itunes normally in the future & get the CD/DVD drive working again? if I delete the upper / lower registry keys what other functions are impacted? I see others say itunes asks for a reinstall...then same problem all over again! THX

  • Satellite A75-S206

Is there any way to boot to an external hard drive connected to a USB port on a Satellite A75-S206? I would really like to be able to do this. Thank you very much in advance for all your help!
    Windows XP Sp3
    Fat 32
    Bios version 1.6

OK, maybe I should be more specific. What I have done is installed WinXP Pro SP3 onto my laptop as the only operating system on a single partition drive, FAT32 as the file system. I then removed the hard drive and placed it into a 2.5 HD enclosure that plugs in via USB. I would like to be able to boot to this drive, connected via the enclosure to USB. I know that when I press F12 during boot I get a boot device selection menu that includes "removable devices" as an option, which indicates to me that I should be able to boot to the USB drive like I want to, only when I try I get a blinking cursor and no other activity. I do not want a drive installed internally, I want my primary boot drive to be via the USB connection to the enclosure, with no other drive installed on the laptop. Is this possible? I read through part of the how-to link posted as a reply previously, but that seemed mainly to focus on installing Windows directly to a removable device from the installation CD. The drive I am dealing with already has a bootable version of windows installed on it, I just need to be able to boot to it externally as opposed to internally.
If there is any other information I should have included, but left out, please let me know and I will fill in the blanks. Thank you to everyone for your help.

  • Satellite P100-347 - DVD Drive no longer visible in Windows XP MCE

Hi. My DVD drives seems to have disapeared from within Windows MCE running on my P100-347. BIOS can see it, it opens and closes with no issues and the light comes on as if the disc is being read yet it's not being seen by Windows as a drive.
I've installed the DVD-RAM drivers from the Toshiba website but this hasnt made one bit of difference. Any suggestions?

    Hi. Thanks for the reply.
Thats the thing. There is no error message or device in device manager relating to the CD / DVD drive. It's not even there as D: drive.
I've tried the knowledge base article and still the problem remains. Does anyone know the product code of the DVD drive that comes with the P100-347? Perhaps I can find a driver for it based on this.
    Edit:
Have found the following in the Event Log :
20 May 2007 PlugPlayMa nager The device 'HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4082N' (IDE\CdRomHL-DT-ST_DVDRAM_GMA- 4082N_______________PT06____\3 04d363050393534353520332020202 020202020) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal.
    Investigations continue....

  • Satellite L505D-S5983 DVD Drive no longer works

Don't know how long ago this problem started, but whenever a cd or dvd is in the drive, the light flashes on and off. If you double click on the dvd drive in windows explorer, it takes a long time trying to read it, then says no dvd/cd in drive. Anyone else have this problem?

You're welcome - good to hear it's Ok

  • CD/DVD Drive no longer reading discs

    HP Pavilion g6-1b50us Notebook PC
    Windows 7 64-bit
I've only had my laptop about a month and a half. To transfer items from my old laptop to the new one, I used the CD/DVD drive to copy items over. It worked beautifully at that time.
Tonight, I went to install a new program I just received. Its on CD-ROM. I placed it in the drive, it popped up with the "run or open" prompt. Pretty straight forward and normal. I clicked run/install and... the drive started making noises like it was either off balance or hung up or... something. After waiting much longer than it should have taken to read the disc, I just clicked the button to open the drive (and essentially cancel the install). No problem, the disc slowed like normal and the drive popped open.
Hmmm... So I did a reboot. Tried again. The run or open prompt came up. I canceled it this time, and went into the computer and right clicked the CD/DVD drive (where it showed the proper title of the disc) and clicked open. IT made the weird noises again and... nothing. I closed out the computer prompt, tried to open the drive again to stop it, and this time i had no luck. It just... sat there. So I ended up doing reboot.
Reboot. Got the disc out. Decided to try the disc in a different computer. Maybe I got a bad program. Nope. It worked like a charm, ready to install elsewhere.
I went BACK to my HP, tried the disc a third time. This time... nothing. No prompt. I went into Computer. No CD title in the CD drive. I clicked on it, and it started spinning (again making the weird hung up/off balance noise) and eventually came back saying there is no disc in the drive.
My various steps to fix things have included:
-- making sure all the drivers, BIOS, etc. updates are installed. All are up to date.
-- Did a system restore point a couple weeks back to see if that helped. No luck. Undid the restore point.
-- Microsoft Fix-It thing. Couldn't do anything because it would never read that there was a disc in the drive in the first place!
-- Did HP System Troubleshooting. Same problem as the Microsoft Fix-It EXCEPT when I used a blank CD-R.
-- Eventually did get it to also read a DVD-R disc. Seems willing to write to disc, but not read???
-- Uninstalled the DVD/CD drive in Device Manager. Let it reinstall the drivers on its own.
-- I've tried an audio CD, a video DVD, the program I am trying to install, and the blank discs. The only things it will read now if the blank discs. (And even then, it takes a few minutes to do that.)
In device manager, it is listed as "hp DVDRAM GT31L SATA CdRom Device."
I'm at my wits end. ANY suggestions I've not tried? Frankly, I NEED to install this program to do my job. This needs to be fixed, like, yesterday.

  • DVD drive no longer shows up

I got a HP Pavilion g6-2392nr a few days ago and today I decided to create some recovery disks. This is Windows 8.1 I should mention. I created disks 1-5 but when I put a dvd in the drive for disk 6, it kept waiting for me to insert the disk. I tried another disk and it also could not find it. So I cancelled the creation of the recovery media and restarted. When I logged back into Windows I attempted to read another disk, just to make sure it was working, but the drive never appeared in the file manager, though I do hear it spinning up. After this I attached my usb dvd drive and tried to finish the final disk. This seemed to finish but then it told me to insert another disk. Anyway, when I look at the device manager the only driver I see is the usb DVD drive, but no drivers now seem to correspond to the integrated one in the laptop.
Does anyone know why this might suddenly happen after hours of working fine? I am getting very frustrated because this is just another in a long line of problems I have been having since getting this computer.

Okay, eventually I found a suggestion in one of the troubleshooting guides that indicated that I should remove the battery and power, shut down for 10 seconds and restart. This worked. What I want to know now is, why would this work, and should I still be concerned that there is a problem with the drive?

    Hi,
The driver is in the operating system so you shouldn't need any. Can you see the optical drive in the Device Manager??

  • DVD drive no longer seen after 10.5.1 upgrade

I upgraded to 10.5.1 on my G5 dual 1.8GHz mac and on reboot the DVD drive is no long visible to the operating system.
The drive was working the moment before I did the upgrade doing an install of iWork.
Now when the system boots, the DVD drive is on visible in System Profiler or Disk Utility

It seems as though the problems are multiplying. Other programs are acting funny now - I had to force quit iTunes yesterday and then the Finder froze. Keyboard response was nil, so I couldn't Force quit the Finder, so I had to resort to more drastic measures. It took two reboots to get things running again. I'm going to review some other threads to see if there are any clues there, then probably wipe the hard drive and do a clean install if nothing else seems to address the issue.

  • Internal dvd drive no longer plays idvd burned projects

My internal dvd drive has been acting strange lately. It will play mass produced dvds but does not play my idvd projects, which it used to do. Anyone know if cleaning will help? If so, can you recommend a cleaner for an imac dvd drive?
If cleaning won't help, am I better off going to apple and having it replaced, or simply buying a compatible external drive? If an external, any recommendations?
    Thanks!

You can use any proprietary lens cleaner for a DVD/CD player, except the ones using a liquid.
When you have cleaned the Superdrive, do a bit of maintenance:
Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but much longer in Leopard.

By the way, you can ignore any messages about SUID or ACL file permissions, as explained here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US
If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • CD/DVD drive no longer reads music CD's after 10.5.6 upgrade

After going through the 10.5.6 upgrade, the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E on my 2.16 Intel MacBook is no longer recognizing music CD's. Bought 3 new CD's just before upgrading and they aren't recognized now, as well as older CD's I own. DVD's and software CD/DVD's seem to work fine however.
Any ideas on why and how to correct the issue? Is there a firmware update for the Matshita DVD drives used by Apple?
    Thanks in advance
    Joseph
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E:
    Firmware Revision: ZB0E
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

My G5 iMac was doing the same thing in the early months of 2008, and it wasn't till June that I discovered the drive itself was going bad. I could burn a disc, and when it finished, it wouldn't mount. I would reboot, and while the disc would then mount, the iMac said it was not the proper format. (Even though it was just burned on the Mac).
A new drive eliminated this problem, so I would ask, how old is your computer?
Mine was a little over two years old when it started this, and it took four months to completely die on me.

  • DVD Drive not recognized in BIOS on dv9720us and dv9723cl

I have 2 dv9700 series laptops. Neither of them will recognize the DVD drive in BIOS or in Windows. They both failed over time. It was not an immediate thing. I have replaced both the drives, and both of the sata "extender" that goes between the motherboard and dvd drive. Still neither of them see any DVD drives. The sata hard drives (and even the secondary hard drives) all function perfectly. Both machines have been upgraded to the newest BIOS (vF.34) and both machines are running Windows Vista 32 (Ubuntu Linux 12.04 was booted from a flash drive and it too does not see the DVD drives). An external DVD drive connected via USB works fine, but this is not an acceptable solution as that kinda' takes away from the whole "portability" of the notebook.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
Oh, one other thing, all (4 now) drives open and close perfectly and even do a seek upon bootup, but still no recogniztion from BIOS.

An update for anyone interested ...
This is just for the dv9720us, I haven't had a chance to work on the dv9723cl yet.
The solder points on the motherboard where the SATA extender card connects for the DVD drive looked like they were "cold" and not really flush on the motheroard. So, after some fine tip soldering to fix those "cold" joints, the DVD drive works perfectly!
Just one more imperfection in this line of laptops.
