CD/DVD drive not recognising any CD/DVD's.

Product type:
HP Pavilion 15-n032sa Notebook PC
The laptop cd/dvd drive is not recognising any cd/dvd's I insert. The cd/dvd's that I do insert also do not seem to fit neatly into the drive.
Is this a software issue or is there something at fault with the hardware?
Any help on the issue would be greatly appreciated.

This sounds like a dirty laser lengs did you try to clean that off and see if can read again? Otherwise if you clean it and still does the problem would mean the drive is failing to read the Optical media.

  • DVD drive not recognising DVD's

    Hi,
I've a fairly basic iMac G4 which had a standard drive CD-RW fitted.
I've swapped this for a CD/DVD drive out of another redundant iMac but cannot get it to recognise DVD's.
It spins up & mounts CD's fine.
I've done a system re-install (10.3.x as I've got this on CD-ROM) but still no joy.
    Any thoughts anyone, please?
    Cheers,
    TT

There may be a specific replacement series of optical drive best
suited for use in those computer models, so the computer would
see the upgrade optical drive as an original SuperDrive and the
OS install DVD disc could be used to boot the Mac, among other
basic and assumed duties it should then be able to perform right.
My suggestion is to see some other sites with a parts configuration
page for various specific Mac computers and note their reference
part numbers and what kinds of firmware or other differences each
model says it has from the factory. Some brands, such as OWC
has listed as replacement parts in their esales 'other world mac'
site, should be easily spec'd out and a similar item found over there.
You should not have to try and upgrade the optical drive's firmware to
have a replacement drive work in the Mac; the correct drive just will.
The optical drive's information in the System Profiler may be of help
in trying to determine if someone has tried to upgrade firmware in
one of those, to use it in a different model computer than designed.
But from what I've read, that seldom works to change firmware on
an optical drive for use in the iMac G4 series, when it can't work.
PS: your other 2 similar posts are duplicates.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • DVD drive not recognised after initial install of software and drivers - Server 2012 R2

    Hi
I have a SATA DVDRW drive that isnt being recognised by windows server
It is recognised in bios, and was initially recognised by windows, until installing an AV on the server.
Looking under device manager, it can still be seen, but only as a hidden device (greyed out).
Both the C: drive and the DVD drive are set in IDE mode in the bios (believe that is just meaning they are sandalone, rather than RAID mode)
If the DVD drive is moved to another SATA port it is recognised by windows, however I want to keep these ports free, so i can use them to RAID my other HDDs as and when i get round to buying them.
    System specs:
OS - Windows Server 2012 R2 with updates (Microsoft Dreamspark)
    MB - ASUS M5A78L/M - USB3
    RAM - 1x 4GB DDR3
DVD drive - SAMSUNG superwritemaster SH223L
Any help would be good :)
soz if this is in the wrong forum, just point me to the right one
    Thanks

Hi guys - thanks for the responses.....
we just tried something simple - swapping the OS drive and the DVD drive over (DVD was in sata 5, OS in sata 6 - now the other way round)
This seems to have worked, so we are going to keep it that way round
    Seems Silly yet simple
    Thanks again

hi, so you say that the drive will work in another SATA port is there the potential that the SATA port you are currently using has a fault? does it work with any other hardware?
another option is a classic windows fault regarding the corrupt registry filters that would make a CD\DVD drive disappear in explorer, however i am not sure if this problem afflicts sever 2012. you could give it a go to see if it resolves the issue
Press the Windows logo key + R to open the Run dialog box.
Type regedit in the Run dialog box, then press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type
    the password, or click Allow
In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
In the right pane, click UpperFilters.
Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters
registry entry. To do this, go to step 7.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
In the right pane, click LowerFilters.
Note If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, go to the next resolution.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
    Exit Registry Editor.
    Restart the computer.

  • CD ROM / DVD Drive not recognised and virus on computer

    Can anybody help please?
My CD ROM / DVD Drive has failed. I have tried troubleshooting etc but to no avail. The computer does not recognise I have a cd rom / dvd drive as it says it is not recognised by the registry?
I also have a virus I cannot get rid of, this may be part of the problem (Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c) I have run numerous virus, spyware and trojan checks but there is no cure yet?
I tried system recovery but it will not let me recover to a previous date.
I cannot use my recovery disc because the computer does not recognise the drive. A catch 22 situation.
Can anyone offer any advice other than throw it out of the window?
Help from anyone would be much appreciated.

    HI Paul,
I think your first priority will be to remove the virus from your notebook. The following link contains details of the virus :-
    http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.desktophijack.html
Is you CD-ROM shown in the BIOS ? If so then set it to be the first selectable boot device and you should then be able to load your recovery disk and reboot from it.

  • Equium A210 - Known good cd/dvd drive not recognised by BIOS

I have tried several cd dvd drives in this unit but the BIOS has "none" against the optical drive..
the drives are good units as they work with a USB caddy on another machine..
I need the optical drive to work so that I can re-install, as the hard disk has now become corrupted. The recovery seems to require the laptop to boot from the CD drive.
If there any suggestions on how I can install onto a formatted hardrive, without using a usb cd drive, that would be cool..

    > the drives are good units as they work with a USB caddy on another machine
The BIOS does not recognize the CD/DVD drive because of wrong master/slave/c-sel settings. You have to use a compatible CD/DVD drive. Such CD/DVD drive can be ordered from local ASP.
    > Are there any suggestions on how I can install onto a formatted hardrive, without using a usb cd drive, that would be cool..
Maybe you could be able to install Windows from USB stick
Im not sure if the BIOS will support the booting from USB stick, but its worth a try.
Here a nice page how to do that:

  • Original DVD drive not recognised

My macmini (1.83Ghz) suddenly stopped recognising its own DVD drive. No mods done to the mac mini but suddenly it does not recognise the drive. there is a movie DVD in it, which spins from time to time (for example when rebooting the mac mini or waking from sleep) but system profiler does not see a DVD drive (when i click on disc burning it shows 'No disc burning device was found. If the device is external, make sure it’s connected and turned on.' this is annoying since i cannot remove the dvd that is there nor play it.
did anyone ever come across this? what can be done to fix it? how to eject the disc manually to see if it's the disc which is the issue?

i did that. the mini took a long time to start but still not dvd drive on the system profiler. i don't know if related but on starting up, it also behaves funnily. after the grey apple screen with a spinning wheel below, i get a blue screen and it seems that nothing happens for ever. the only way to get back into the mini is to set it to sleep (pushing the power button does that) then waking it up. i then get a started up mini but it does not respond to mouse action (although the arrow moves, the click don't seem to have an effect and the keyboard is unresponsive (both are bluetooth). after a while though (around 2 min) they both operate correctly which is how i reply to you. this has been the case ever since the dvd drive disapeared so the two problems appear linked. the mini is running snow leoppard.
    please help me - thanks.

  • IdeaCentre Q180 DVD drive not recognised

I have just purchased an IdeaCentre Q180 with an attached DVD drive, but it is not recognised in My Computer, and although you can initially heaar a CD or  DVD drive spinning, they do not play or register on the PC.
How can I resolve this?  I have seen on other posts to check in the BIOS, but am unclear how to do this.
    Thank you.

Okay well to get to the BIOS on most machines (I cant remember the exact button for the Q180) you switch on the PC and the start pressing the F2 or Delete key a few times till you get the BIOS screen.
Sometimes its the F10 key but mostly Del.
Why they cant agree on one key I don't know.
Then you can take a look in the BIOS and see if the DVD shows in the drives list.

  • Pics in DVD drive not recognised.

I have G30-50 laptop......I saved some photos to a DVD. When I place it in the DVD drive it used to open Lenovo Photo Master (cyberlink)....Now it is opening Lenovo Power DVD 10. (cyberlink)....This is no good for showing photos...How can I get them to open Photo Master again?....Thanking you....John.

    hi there,
Can you follow option one of this guide to disable auto remembering of Autoplay choices. When finished, eject the dvd disc and re-insert it again then choose  the Lenovo Photo Master as the default program.
In addition, if you manually open the folder where the picture are and open them one by one (double click), does it open with Power DVD 10 too? If yes, can you follow the guides below on how to fix them:

  • DVD Device not recognised as a DVD Device

    Hi,
I am having a very annoying problem.
Since installing arch (quite a while ago) I have not been able to use my DVD device for DVDs.  It is recognised as a CD-ROM only, whereas it is really a DVD reader / CD burner (not dvd burner).  I have been able to use this for reading dvds on windows, then when i used to be on ubuntu.  Arch doesn't see it properly.
When Arch loads, i notice Universal CD Device Driver or something, version 3.20, is loaded for hdc (my device).  I think it is not recognised properly.
I have tried manually mounting different devices, checked dmesg for any changes between reading a dvd and reading a cd (no new lines in dmesg when a dvd has been inserted).  It is really, really strange and I do not know what to do.
Can someone please help me?  I can download the drivers for my device (windows tho) if that helps.
Any response is greatly appreciated.  Thanks

yes I have that, no difference.  I think it is a problem with the firmware that is flashed onto the device itself, or something like that.  is there a way to flash firmwares in linux?  all the toshiba firmware installation things, or the rpc1.org stuff are all for windows.  how can i do it?
or, if there is a way, i'd like to reset to the original firmware, is there any possibility of that?

I am trying to install a brand new WD 500 gb sata internal hd in my macbook pro. the original install dvd does not recognise the hd. all hardware is ok. any help?

For some reason OS X disks (whatever edition or flavors) that are supplied with Apple products only seem to contain a limited knowledge of available hard drives on the market at the time of thier publishing. This (rather opportunistically) creates a "Best Before" stale-OS X-software-copy situation where upgrading to or replacing a defective internal SATA hard drive with a newer, better or larger one is a largely hit and miss affair.
If you buy the latest and greatest disk drive available for any older Mac you are likely to run into unresolvable problems making a clean re-install of your own, old edition or flavor of OS X onto any newer or larger hard drive since the OEM (gray) "OS X Install Disks" that Apple supply with retail products seem to contain only time-sensitive lists/mapings of then-known target drives that the Drive Management Tool in the then-published old "Installer Software" will support.
Presumably new (colorful "X") retail versions of OS X (10.whatever.whatever) also contain time-limited Installers with limited knowledge of and adaptability to/compatability with a limited number of old hard drives then kicking-around on the market.
This is especially a problem nowadays since the countless "puny old" hard drives that have been on the market are largely obsolete in a few months time, as manufacturers continue to produce larger and cheaper units, discontinuing older puny products... So if your drive fails you need an exact old (or similar familial) replacement drive for your "backup copy of OS X" to do a fresh, clean OS X re-install. Otherwise you need to purchase a new retail version of OS X, since yours is now effectively obsolete. Purchasing an old, puny drive to re-install your version.flavor of OS X to avoid buying a new version of OS X is a rather false economy.
If you still have a working old hard drive with your old polluted 10.version.flavor of OS X still working on it you apparently must clone it with Time Machine or the newest version of Disk Utility (disk image copying) to most newer, larger drives, and a clean reinstall to such new hard drives is not possible.

  • Satellite P30-145: drive will not recognise dual layer DVDs

I have a Satellite P30-145 with a DVD SupermultiDL drive. When I first got the PC I could write dual layer DVDs without any problems. Now the drive will not recognise dual layer DVDs at all. Even ones from the same box that worked fine previously. I'm using Verbatim Double Layer DVD+R 2.4x discs.
After much searching on the internet I downloaded and ran DVDInfoPro. This application reported that the drive did not support DVD+RW DL. Very strange!!
Can anyone help? The drive is a Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-831S.

    Hi Lan
This drive is definitely DL one but I can just imagine that drive is defective and can not calibrate lens in the right position. This notebook model is more that two years old and if you have used this drive intensively I can really imagine that DL function is defective.
What you can do is to clean the lens and see it this will help.

  • My disk drive does not play any original dvd or cd anymore, but the copies work fine, no matter which format. Do I need a new disk drive?

    Hello All,
since last week my disk drive does not play any original DVD or CD anymore, but copied ones, no matter which format work fine. I am a bit confused that the copied ones still work.
Anybody experienced the same? Will I have to get a new disk drive? Unfortunately the warranty expired last month
Looking forward to your answers and thanks,

I have an external firewire burner; it never shows on the desktop unless I insert a CD or DVD - that icon will then show (if I have my preferences set to show those on the desktop). Hae you checked in Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities) to see if it is listed under drives?
