CD/DVD Drive won't work - Help Please??

I have a fairly new laptop (2 months old maybe) running windows 7 pro 64-bit. The CD/DVD drive stopped working after I upgraded from Windows 7 Home Edition and installed iTunes so I'm not sure which one is causing the problem but I'm leaning towards iTunes based on what I've been reading... The disc drive is still listed under "My Computer" but it will not read any discs.
Here's the diagnostic info:

If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.
Some computers need an update to the ATA or IDE bus driver, or Intel chipset. If iTunes has problems recognizing CDs or hanging or crashing while importing or burning CDs, check the support site for the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard.

If anyone has a solution for this stupid problem that would be great.
    Thanks

Yes, I suspect that it's the virtual drive emulator software you have there. I know nothing about that software and it doesn't look like the Roxio support page even mentions it, so it's probably software old enough that they're not supporting it anymore.
To uninstall any software, I would start with the "Add and Remove Programs" Control Panel. Uninstall it there, and then use the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility —
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301
Download and install that. Run it and find the drive emulator software on the list and remove it there. And reboot and see if that has successfully removed it.
There is a work around that if we just remove the iTunes CD driver, you'll probably get your drive back, but you'll only be able to rip CDs, you won't be able to burn them without the iTunes CD driver installed. You do have some Pinnacle CD burning software installed. Are you currently using that or is that leftover cruft as well?

  • External dvd drive won't work on USB macBook air

External dvd drive won't work on my macBook air usb port.  It works on older versions of air and iMac.
Any ideas.  Tried the left shift, control, option and power button sumultaniously, but did not work.

I know that no one has replied yet, but figured out the issue.  I called Applecare and they couldn't figure it out, so sent me to a genuis at the Apple store.  They too couldn't figure it out and told me that it was a firmware issue with the Toshiba dvd external drive.  When I got home, I thought I would try one more thing.  I hooked it up to a powered hub and it works perfectly.  I'm not sure why no one else thought of it, but glad that I did.

  • So, now my CD/DVD drive won't work

I made the BIG mistake of upgrading to LION last week.   Up until that moment, EVERYTHING was working fine on my MAC.   I downloaded the software just fine but when I went to install it I received a message saying my hard drive was full.   I'm sure that I had plenty of room left and would have thought that if it was full I would have received that message PRIOR to the download.   Nevertheless, I tried it again.  This time I received a message saying that there was something wrong with my hard drive and it needed repairing.   I did the verification and tried to do the repair but it wouldn't work.
Made an appointment with the Apple Store, (at least I live near a store), and they went through all the diagnostics and said, "There is nothing wrong with your hard drive yet we are unable to install the upgrade ... meaning that my computer will not function.  I had to buy a new hard drive and have them install LION on it.   Before I left the store I told the tech guy that I'd like to turn it on to make sure it would work ... guess what ... it wouldn't.   "I can't understand it", he said, "It was working just fine a few minutes ago."   I had him try it a few more times and then he advised me that they'd have to do it again and for me to come back (again).
So, now I have a new hard drive and a new operating system ... but I had to pay for it in cash, frustration, time, and lost data (my email archive mostly) ... BUT ... now my CD/DVD drive won't work.   I've had to reload software with an external drive.
    What the **** ????
Anyone with some thoughts on this?
(Plus I've had to create a new MAC ID?   Why won't it accept my old account ID?)

Thank you again ... I wasn't aware of that bit of information.
I've never used Toast before but have heard of it.  I just went to their website and watched a quick video.  I'm a tad confused though ... is Toast able to rip movie DVD's before burning a copy?   I used to have some software that could do this but, of course, it's now gone with my new hard drive.

  • DVD drive won't work after Mavericks upgrade

I upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard, and ever since, my CD/DVD drive will not work.  Discs spin, but then they are ejected.  Doesn't matter what type of disc I put in.
The drive was working fine before I upgraded.  I have reset the SMC and the NVRAM/PRAM, but the drive still isn't working.
Any suggestions for what else I can try?

Others here wouldnt recommend it, but on a new OS install, since I have a giant pile of HD, ...i just grab another HD and create a new fresh Time Machine backup
after its complete, I take the original HD with the OLD backup and format/erase it.
Im a tad too lazy to wait, as you yourself mentioned,  1 hour for TM just to PREPARE to backup. Nope, no,...not gonna do it.
I updated 4 Macs to Mavericks and id rather make a wholly NEW Time Machine backup on another HD and erase the original.
Since I keep about 12+ redundant archives of my important data, I have no worry on earth of ever losing data.
Time machine is a backup, NOT an archive for vital data.

  • DVD Drive won't work! (DVD region settings?)

My DVD drive does not seem to be working. I sent it in for servicing and was told that they changed the drive.
However, it still does not accept/recognize DVDs at all when I insert them. I recently travelled overseas and changed my region from region 4 to region 1. I have not changed it back, but cannot figure out how to even open the settings.
    Help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks!

The drive automatically detects that a disk with a different region was inserted. You can only change it 5 times however. If you continue having problems take it to your nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.

  • Dvd drive won't work!

Whenever I try to go to apple cd player, a window pops up and tells me that the "apple cd/dvd driver is not in the extensions folder. So I put it in the folder and it still gives me the same message.

So I put it in the folder and it still gives me the same message.
Are you saying it wasn't there before? If so, where did you get it from (that extension)? It should be called "Apple CD/DVD Driver." It should be in the System Folder/Extensions folder. I don't think your DVD drive would have been working (not just for the music player) with it.

  • DVD drive won't work but it will burn disk?

    imac 2.4Ghz - 10.5.8
For sometime now my DVD drive spits out Cd's/DVDs as soon as I put it in. Strange thing is, it will let me put blank media in and will allow me to burn disks.
It's getting really annoying now as can't do so many things I need to do.
I want to upgrade to Snow leopard but until this is sorted I can't. I know I can attach an external drive or replace it but I need to know that I've covered all areas before resorting to this.
Wondering if an upgrade caused this possibly?
Would be very grateful for any help anyone can give me?
    Many thanks

    Hello kfq
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    1. Check and clean those CDs and DVDs, SuperDrives are picky and don't like dirty, filmy, scratched, warped, out of balance media with labels on them!
    2. Check the Apple > System Preferences > CDs & DVDs to make sure that they were set correctly. To include toggling/re-setting them to something else and back, forcing the system to re-write the preferences.
    3. Download the 10.5.8 Combo Update from the following Apple Support page and install it over the top of the current 10.5.8 > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL866

  • CD/DVD drive won't work!

I've been having problems with the optical drive on my iMac. This evening I tried to put a disc in, and it simply wouldn't acknowledge the disc. It wouldn't even suck the disc in... it just didn't do anything at all.
I searched these forums, and found a few suggestions (such as unplugging the computer and then restarting), but nothing seems to work.
Then, after a bit more trying, the disc I was using got stuck in the drive. It still won't read it, and now I can't even eject it. I've tried restarting a number of times, and the only thing that has happened is once it displayed the "You have inserted a blank CD, what do you want to do?" screen. However, it wouldn't let me eject the disc from here either.
    Any suggestions?
Also, on previous threads, people suggested that this could be an issue with the individual discs. This shouldn't be the issue here. I tried a couple of different discse-- one was the Aperture install disc (brand new), and the other one I tried was my 10.5 install disc. We're not dealing with irregular sized discs or burned discs-- just normal DVD/CDs manufactured by Apple.

If I have to bring it in to get it replaced I'm gonna be very upset. This shouldn't be a problem. If all they can tell you is to do "numerous restarts and shutdowns" to fix it, then there's really something wrong. I've done the restart/shutdown thing and even did some PRM(I don't know if this is right) restart thing I read in some other posts about a malfunctioning superdrive. It seems to help the iMac recognize the Superdrive. But after successfully burning a music CD in iTunes, the superdrive fails again when attempting to burn another CD. Then I have to do another reset to get the Superdrive functioning again. It's not like I overuse my superdrive. I've only burned maybe 10 music cds and 5 movie dvds. Don't get me wrong...I love my iMac but having a wack superdrive is unacceptable for this machine.
I don't have AppleCare because I didn't expect the superdrive or anything in this machine to malfunction so quickly. If my best option is to buy an external drive then so be it. I won't overpay to have another wack Matsu(piece-of)****-a replace the old one.

  • External dvd drive won't work w/ iMac (10.5.8)

Just bought a new LaCie dvd rw w/ lightscribe.  When I plug it into my iMac, the system profiler "sees" it through the firewire connection, but any disk I put into it won't mount.  I plugged it in to my daughters PC & it was instantly recognized & disks were readable.  Do I need a special driver or patch?  I downloaded everything on the LaCie website w/ no luck.  Thanks!

What OS version are you on? Normally you don't need anything (especially not a driver), but I remember from 10.5 that I had to download the disc recording support:
    http://www.lacie.com/us/support/support_manifest.htm?id=10340
even though laCie insisted I didn't need it and that it was for earlier OS's, I downloaded and installed it and it worked in 10.5 (probably not in 10.6, most likely not in 10.7).
Also, depending on the options you have checked for showing/not showing CD/DVD on desktop, you may not see it - check Finder Preferences and iTunes as well.

  • Macbook OS is toast and DVD drive issue to boot, help please!!!

So my girlfriends macbook booted and it only shows a folder with a question mark. Ok, so I've done all the simple things I've come across on the web. SO I finally get a copy of the disc to fix it and I can't put the disc in. As far as I can tell there is no disc in it and doing all the tricks to get it to eject yields no results so I am assuming there isn't one in it. If I push harder than I would like the disc will go in about 40% but seems blocked by something on the right side of the slot.
So my 2 questions are how do I get a disc in and if not how do I fix this thing without being able to insert a disc?
The only other computer available is a PC. The Macbook is out of warranty and she doesn't have the money for apples expensive repairs.
Please tell me there is something that can be done.

Since it's out of warranty, you could always take the drive out of the system and take it apart to see if indeed there is anything in it or not. Otherwise, you could just buy an external DVD-ROM, like they sell on the cheap for netbooks. It's not free, but it is cheaper than taking it somewhere to get fixed.

  • My dvd drive won't work on my MacBook Pro.

I've looked through tons of forums on this subject but have only found people that have the same problem as me but no solutions. I slide in a store bought DVD movie it spins and whirs for a few seconds and then gets spit back out. No sign of it even reading the DVD at all. Please help.

  • I can't open itunes because it says "it cannot be opened because it was created by a newer version of itunes." I've downloaded newest of Windows and itunes and it still won't work--help, please.

Hi--I can't get itunes to open because it says "the file cannot be opened because it was created by a newer version of itunes." I have installed newest versions of Windows & itunes recently, as the troubleshooter instructed, to no avail...Help!!!

This error prevents iTunes from launching. The library file was modified to work with the newer iTunes version, so it is no longer compatible with the previous version. The good news, however, is that Apple does backup the iTunes library file into a subdirectory that you can use to revert back to the previous version.
To recover a previous version of the iTunes Library.itl file, use the following steps:
Open up your My Documents\My Music folder.
We will first backup the current version. Rename iTunes Library.itl to something like iTunes Library.itl.bak.
Go into the My Documents\My Music\Previous iTunes Libraries folder.
You may see several files that start with iTunes Library and have a date included in the name. Copy the newest file in the folder.
Go back to the My Documents\My Music and paste the file from the previous step.
Rename the new copied file to iTunes Library.itl.
Your library should now be restored to the previous version of iTunes, and you should no longer receive the message.

  • My dvd drive has stopped working... put disk in...spits it out! Can anyone help?

My DVD drive has stopped working...put a disk in...spits it out. Can anyone help?

If you have a mid 2010 iMac, it is not PPC.  PPC refers to pre-2006.
The 2010 is getting close to the age the PRAM battery might go, so that could be at issue.
The other issue is that the drive itself could only handle up to a certain speed DVD disc:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP588
    Slot-loading 8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Writes DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL discs at up to 4x speed
Writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 8x speed
Writes DVD-RW discs at up to 6x speed and DVD+RW discs at up to 8x speed
Reads DVDs at up to 8x speed
Writes CD-R discs at up to 24x speed
Writes CD-RW discs at up to 16x speed
Reads CDs at up to 24x speed
If any are near the top end, that could explain it.
Some copy-protected commercial DVDs that were recently released may have difficulty with Apple's drives.
Some non-region discs may have difficulty if you are outside of the country region the disc was made.  Apple gives you several attempts to setup regions.
If you or anyone else stuck an SD card in the CD drive by accident, it would spit out discs regardless of what kind you put in.  Good to try a commercial music CD you know worked before, or a commercial DVD you know worked before under 10.6.8.
I know for instance some Netflix DVDs won't read on my 10.9 installed iMac of the same age but will work on the 10.7 installed MacBook Pro that is newer.   And switching back to 10.6 on the same iMac doesn't make a difference.
http://www.macsales.com/ offers external drives as well as internal replacement drives worldwide.
    Bluray is not compatible.
Discs with sticky label may not work because they make the disc out of balance, and the sticky can get into the drive mechanism.
Barring anything else, it could have gotten dust accumulated.  Bring it to the genius bar of an Apple Store if still baffled.
