  • DVD DRIVE vanishes in 10.9.4

    Mac Pro.
After installing 10.9.4 my superdrive vanishes after a period of time.
It is there on starting up.
It is there if a do a sleep and wake soon after starting up.
It vanishes if I leave the machine alone and to sleep for a few hours.
    The drive functions fine.
I suspect it is powering off the drives when not used - as set in preferences - but seems to fail to wake up just the superdrive.
A reboot will re-establish the drive.
Is the answer to turn off the option to power off drives not being used.
All other external drives seem fine under all conditions.
Not a disaster, just a nuisance.

That would be my guess, but then I never sleep desktop machines or their HDs, just their displays. Normally run 24/7 and have been for years.

  • Equium - DVD drive has vanished

Installed some new software the other day to 'catch' a video from my vcr- filled up my Vista drive so I uninstalled it after putting the video on my harddrive. Now my DVD drive doesn't show up on my computer.
Tried microsoft's automated trouble shooter - it installs the driver for the device and the ram but it disapears again everytime I switch off my pc - and the dvd player still doesn't work. I don't know what I'm doing here so if anyone has some simple information how to fix this I would be very grateful.
    Thanks

    Hi writerchic,
I dont know which Microsoft trouble shooter you have tried or what it does it exactly but in your case I would remove the upper- and lowerfilteres in registry. Therefore follow these steps:
    1) Run regedit (Start -> Run -> regedit)
    2) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    3) In the right pane, delete the "UpperFilters" key, and delete the "LowerFilters" key.
    4) Reboot your notebook.
    Does it work?

  • Please Help me..... DVD drive not detected, Vista home basic 32 bit

    Hi,
I have a compaq presario v3702au laptop with Vista basic 32 bit OS.
The dvd drive has suddenly vanished and is not detect by device manager. It show up in the BIOS and brifly powers up while booting(tray comes out on pressing the button) , but does not recieve power once booted( tray does not come out on pressing the button).
there are no upper and lower filters present so this remedy is not for me, ms fixit tool also could not help as it could not find any optical drive.
The hardware itself seems to be alright because if I press F8 to get to boot options ( Safe mode, etc) and insert a disc , the drive tries read it (ie. Drive receives power, tray opens and the disc also spins), but once the boot starts the dvd button becomes non functional as if it is not receiving power.
I really need my optical drive and would greatly appreciate any help on this .
    Thanks in advance,
    Sankr

So does it fully boot from the optical drive? All the other symptoms you describe are fully consistent with a dead drive, but if you can boot to a bootable disk then the drive is OK

  • DVD  driver is deleted when PSE 6 is installed

    Windows Vista & PSE 6.
After installing PSE 6, I lose my DVD Driver. This has happened three times, each requiring a clean install of Windows. I have modified the registry as instructions on the Adobe site has suggested, and this does indeed work........for a time.
Unfortunately, after a while it seems that even the registry fix does not stop the driver vanishing. I have tried to download driver updates, but with the missing registry files, this is virtually impossible to accomplish as the system will not accept a new DVD driver.
The DVD is a TSST SH-S203N. It works fine on the system, until PSE6 is reintroduced. There is no other burning software installed on the system.
The time has now come when I am looking to install PSE6 for a fourth time, but am unwilling to have a complete overhaul of my system if it is going to corrupt it again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks :)

Are you loosing the sofware or it gets removed from device manager. Are you able to burn the DVD through the PSE application. What registry entries are you modifying? Is the problem solved when you uinstall PSE6?Also is the burning software present in progam files or it disappears from there also?

    HELP!

    Hi,
if you want to check the drive insert a bootabl CD/DVD, start the notebook and press F12 for boot menu!
Then boot from CD, when it start the drive should be ok!
Then the failure is windows based and a System Restore should display the CD Drive in explorer again!
Otherwise it can be a hardware failure look faulty IDE connector or something else. Then a Toshiba Service Partner should be called for a short check up!
    Bye TOK

  • Stuck: Need Disk repair but DVD drive dead and only have USB 1

[1 Ghz flat-panel iMac with USB 1 ports (no USB 2) and also Firewire 400]
I noticed a strange discrepancy (small but concerning) between the size of a folder on hard drive (folder of all mp3's with no subfolders) and the backup of the same folder on a mounted thumb drive.
(The size difference was not due to any invisible .DS_Store files and both folders are displayed in List view format.)
    Disk Utility reports three things:
    1. Incorrect number of thread records
    2. Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
    3. Checking volume information.
Volume free block count",0)   [I might have mangled this line]
(It should be 13438611 instead of 13437937)
Here is the GOOD (but these are useless as explained under the "Bad"):
    - I have a Tiger 10.4 boot DVD for a repair ==>but see below
    - I also have a Disk Warrior disk (never used)
    Here is the BAD:
    - My built-in optical drive [Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105] is -- I now discover - defunct and DEAD - it does not run the Tiger Boot DVD (in pristine shape).
    - I bought an external SuperDrive (unopened) but I believe no boot from USB 1 is possible in PowerPC so a SuperDrive with USB 1 is useless.
    Questions:
1.) Is there any way to boot from some external source (optical drive is DEAD) to run Disk Utility and/or Disk Warrior? -- I see none in this case! (gulp).
2.) More importantly (and this is my fundamental concern): Do the three Disk Utility hard drive issues constitute any direct threat to the integrity of my files?
I have almost everything backed up to duplicate thumb drives over these many months as standard practice.
Are these Disk Utility errors fully isolated to hard drive directory-keeping...or do these directory damage errors pose the possibility of mangling or harming my files or their metadata (filesize, etc.).
Put another way, when files are backed-up from a hard drive under the Disk Utility reports above, do they remain unharmed and undamaged by the situations reported by Disk Utility?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    Jeff and Michael,
Thank you both for your generous and thoughtful input.
Michael: As I slept on it overnight, the exact same idea occurred to me of trying a Target Mode to the iMac from my Lion MacbookPro (I have it but stupidly have yet to use it much!).
I did buy a Firewire 800 (MBP) to Firewire 400 (iMac) adapter cable a few months ago!
CONCERN: Would there be potential compatibility issues or risks in running Lion 10.7's Disk Utility against the hard drive of the old OSX 10.4 iMac in Target Disk Mode?
==> Assuming an "it's ok" answer to the Target Disk question, would the majority of users agree that the Target Disk Mode would be more prudent than running:
fsck -fy   in Single User Mode
I have never done fsck -fy before especially because I was under the impression there were issues with Journaled drived but from what I have read today...it looks ok to do)
Jeff: Can't thank you enough for the reference to the OTW DVD drive. I might first invest $10 in one of those DVD lens cleaner disks that I've read about. It's probably not the issue or else why would the drive read commercial Music cds perfectly well!
    Thanks,
    Bilil

  • Windows Vista Home + iTunes = no DVD drives

I am a long time iTunes user, and have been having an issue with iTunes for the last little while. When I install iTunes (I'm on Windows Vista 32 bit, by the way), after the required restart, my DVD drives' icons disappear (I have 2 of them). I can see the DVD drives in the Device Manager, and they say they cannot start. The only I think I've had these problems since about iTunes 7.0, but I don't burn CDs that often, so I've really not felt too bad about it, except that my wife would like to do so. I've done the registry change where you remove the upper and lower filters, which corrects the drive issue, but then presents the seemingly inevitable Registry issue dialog box, without the option to burn CDs. Here are the steps I've done thus far to try to get my computer and iTunes to play nicely:
    1. Tried reenabling the UpperFilter for GearAspiWDM as described here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305422
    2. Tried downloading new GEAR drivers from their website.
    3. Tried uninstalling Quicktime, and then installing it separately.
    4. Uninstalled my other music service software (SonicStage), and then reinstalling iTunes.
    5. Completely uninstalled iTunes, and then reinstalled it (a couple of iTunes versions ago).
    6. Tried uninstalling the non-functioning DVD drives in the device manager, and then scanning for hardware changes. When the UpperFilter was still present, this part failed. It passed after I removed the UpperFilter registry entry.
    Please help!

  • My DVD drive is no longer recognized.

For the past few months my dvd drive would not open when I used the eject disk function. A few times I went into the startup menu and ejected the disk manually. Now the dvd drive is not even recognized by the computer. This dvd drive is the original and my G5 is at least 5-6 years old. Should I replace the dvd drive or is this a software issue?

Hi birdman1999, and a warm welcome to the forums!
It is very likely it is gone, I've not had an Optical in the last 8 years that lasted that long myself.
Does it not show up even in Disk Utility or System Profiler?
Does it boot off the Install Disc if inserted and holding the c key at bootup?
    Here's some options for replacement...

  • DVD drive no longer shows up

I got a HP Pavilion g6-2392nr a few days ago and today I decided to create some recovery disks. This is Windows 8.1 I should mention. I created disks 1-5 but when I put a dvd in the drive for disk 6, it kept waiting for me to insert the disk. I tried another disk and it also could not find it. So I cancelled the creation of the recovery media and restarted. When I logged back into Windows I attempted to read another disk, just to make sure it was working, but the drive never appeared in the file manager, though I do hear it spinning up. After this I attached my usb dvd drive and tried to finish the final disk. This seemed to finish but then it told me to insert another disk. Anyway, when I look at the device manager the only driver I see is the usb DVD drive, but no drivers now seem to correspond to the integrated one in the laptop.
Does anyone know why this might suddenly happen after hours of working fine? I am getting very frustrated because this is just another in a long line of problems I have been having since getting this computer.

Okay, eventually I found a suggestion in one of the troubleshooting guides that indicated that I should remove the battery and power, shut down for 10 seconds and restart. This worked. What I want to know now is, why would this work, and should I still be concerned that there is a problem with the drive?

  • Hard drive and dvd drive - simultaneous failure

    Hi
I'm running a 2yr 8 month old PowerPC. G4 1.67ghz with 2gb RAM. Until today, it's been pretty much faultless. I have had issues in the past related to installing updates from Mac. ie. on two separate occasions I took updates only to find that the machine wouldn't re-boot. Issues were resolved using install disks, disk warrior and/or repeated booting.
    Anyway - today:
I installed the update (Security Update 2008-003 (power PC)). Restarted and all was fine. Sometime later, after considerable use, the machine went to sleep. When I tried to wake it it wouldn't do anything. Eventually a blank grey screen came up with the file icon which alternately flashed a question mark and the finder icon.
I looked on these boards for suggestions. The best one seemed to be boot from the install disks. Unfortunately there is already an audio disk in the drive. I looked for suggestions to eject but none worked. Eventually, I plugged in my bootable clone of my harddrive. The machine took matters into its own hands and booted from it.
Once up and running I ran disk utility to check the status of the internal drive. It doesn't come up in the display. Nor does it show on the desktop or the in the finder. Which suggests to me that it's died.
I then looked to see if I could eject the cd from the DVD drive. i found no icon for the cd on the desktop or in the finder. I checked the "about this mac page" and it tells me "No burning device was found." This in turn suggests that the DVD burner has failed along with the hard drive.
My immediate thought would be that both parts have just reached the end of their time and given up the ghost. I'm a bit surprised/suspicious though that they seem to have done so in the same moment. And on the day that I downloaded a Security Update.
Has anyone had a similar problem, if so what did you do? Can anyone suggest anything I may not have thought of to find my missing HD and DVD burner? Would I be best off going to the Mac store in London? Ultimately, is replacing them myself a realistic proposition?
    Help appreciated.
    Ewan

    Thanks Arnie
Have been thinking along those lines. Especially as, when I boot the machine from the external drive, I can hear the DVD drive whirring. So it's clearly not completely dead.
