Cd/dvd player no longer functioning the same.

My player used to work just fine. I went to burn some cd's of photos and found it no longer was functioning. I read numerous posts and have tried all the fixes that I found.
First here are the issues.
1. plays music cd's (purchased)
2. As of today spits out dvd-movie (purchased) that worked last week.
3. Doesn't recognize blanks that used to work and doesn't spit them out. No icon on desktop. Can eject only through my Toast program or by restarting computer.
Fixes tried.
1. Multimedia Laser Lens Cleaner. (It has 8 little tiny brushes on the underside, don't know if it is any good, just bought)
2. Did a PRAM reset.
3. Did a PMU reset.
4. Did the permissions and disk repair from computer and from the OS disk.
5. changed the systems preference setting to open Toast when a blank CD is inserted.
Nothing has changed.

There are lens cleaners that look more like plain CDs only with slightly 'furry' surfaces for lens cleaning, but there's no reason to assume the one you have is any less effective or won't do the job of cleaning the head appropriately.
Basically the drive will only show up in the Disk Utilities application when there's a readable volume inserted in it. It doesn't appear at all if the drive is empty because Disk Utilities doesn't read the drive hardware. Thus if the drive controller is working and thus the drive shows up in the System Profiler, but the head is damaged or failed thus it won't read disks, it would give the symptoms you describe.
I have to say that I've never been a great fan of these slot-loading drives, though that doesn't mean there's anything intrinsically wrong with them or any inherent reason they would fail. To me, however, I've found them relatively slow and poor in overall burn performance (particularly the superdrives). One would hope that drives wouldn't suffer head failures after such a short period of time, but sadly some will, even if on balance the reliability of the drives is generally good.
Might I suggest that if you have an Apple store within reasonable reach, you take your mini in for it to be looked at. If there's a simple cure the genius bar in most Apple stores has proven rather effective at finding it!

Aperture and DVD Player no longer work with NVIDIA 330M, help!

I recently got my computer back from the Apple Store, had the display switched because the glass kept falling off.
Anyways, since getting it back, I noticed DVD Player doesn't work anymore, it gives me:
There was an initialization error
A valid video device could not be found for playback. [-70017]
And when I try to start Aperture 3.3:
Error
The installed graphics card does not meet the minimum requirements for Aperture.
I have a mid-2010 MBP i5 2.4Ghz with 8GB memory, running OSX 10.7.4.
Things i have tried:
Reset PRAM
Reset SMC
Boot into recovery mode and fix permissions
Boot into 32 bit kernel
force fsck
Create new user and try from that account
Also my video conference software, Jabber gives an error and quits too. Its something with the video.
Switching to Intel HD video, everything works fine. Only with the NVIDIA 330M do I get this error.
Does anyone have any idea what this may be or what I could try?

IMac DVD player no longer working

Hi,
I have Mac OS X version 10.6.8
My iMac is not playing DVDs anymore. When I insert a DVD a pop-up window appears saying: "You inserted a blank DVD. Choose an action from the pop-up menu or click ignore." The DVD I inserted isn't blank and it says the same thing when I try other DVDs.
From the action menu there is: Open Finder, Open iDVD, Open iTunes, Open Disk Utility. I have tried to open with iDVD and it didn't work. I tried to click on Open Finder and then the DVD shows up on the dektop but it is blank, nothing happens when I click into it the picture of the DVD.
I think I have caused this to happen by accidentally deleting something in the applications folder. Any ideas of how I can reinstall the software that runs DVDs on the iMac?
When I used to insert a DVD I would get the picture of the DVD on the desktop and I would be able to see it on "Front Row" where all the entertainment is.

Another dvd player 70017 error - but the drive works fine???

Mac Mini early 2009 - 2.0ghz, 3gb ram, 10.6.2.
I am having a regular problem with the dvd player; I usually get the message "There was an initialization error. A valid video device could not be found for playback. Error 70017" when I start the program.
The DVD drive works wonderfully for reading, burning, etc. If I restart the computer the dvd player usually works for watching movies...if I use Toast, disk utility, or any other dvd related program, the player will now work again. I have tried the pacifist method to reinstall and have deleted every dvd player file I can find.... The same happens when I reset pram.
Any advice? Doesn't seem to be hardware, but I'd be glad to test that as well.
What's going on here? This is frustrating...I can use any number of other programs to watch movies, but it sure is nice to be able to use dvd player to see which title is playing, etc...plus I just want it to work - after all, isn't that the hook?

Two things, have you run the Hardware Test on your Install DVD? Have you tried resetting the Systems Management Controller?

Okay, then what about an alternative for getting the same result. The file associated in the article is too much. All we need is something simple for a single exchange server with 180 users. We only need to pull UserName and DataSize(KB).
I only need to collect two pieces of information from the exchange server and the third piece is forced due to the date of when the information was collected. This way I can sort and filter by Date and Name to see a trend of the users mailbox usage
size.
Every day this runs, it determines the date of the file which is also the first piece, then pulls from the exchange server the entire list of users (the second piece), and then the respective user's mailbox size in KB (the third piece). This all is
dropped into a CSV file later used to import into a database before being archived, done by a second task on the server. Later used by a shared Excel PowerPivot document among the department.
Those of us in the server admin group use this to, at a glance, see the collective size of email usage on the server. Mainly used as a means of catching an incident before it happens. We are currently keeping our users around a collective 80GB
of use out of the well received limit of 110GB on Exchange 2003 and limiting the user's ability to send and receive email by email quota is apparently not accepted for us to do. So we use this to determine who we need to visit and force archive their
email so the server doesn't fail due to the size limit.

When I run my applet in IBM Visual Age it works fine. When I run it in my browser it does not function the same. It has to save a file on to my hardrive but it doesn't work. Can someone help.

I assumed that if I used the project style sheet during the export, Word would convert the style so that it looked the same as in the HTML. Is that a bad assumption? I'm currently not mapping to any template equivalent for these message box styles. I did try it as one of my attempts, but I couldn't figure it out. It never seemed to take the style in the .dot.
Anyway, if I use just 1 style, such as just the MsgBox, I obviously don't get the white paragraph between the title and message. That white paragraph comes from the first <p> tag in the MsgBox style. But I need to have the <p> tags in there because they're better for our localization process than line breaks.
I did do some tweaks that made it look better. Basically I structured it so that the MsgBoxTitle div is now inside the MsgBox div. Something like this:

You would need to have burned the disc using iDVD or a third-party application such as Toast. Is that what you did?

There's a difference between a data DVD, and a DVD-Video. I believe you made a data DVD, which can't be played in a video player. The Burn feature of the Finder can't author a DVD-V, just data discs.
I assume you made a Project, and put clips from your Event Library into the Project. But then, how did you output your Project, using the SHARE menu?
When I pull down iMovie '11s SHARE menu, "iDVD..." is one of the options. It's the job of iDVD to make the menu that appears when you insert a DVD into your player (that says the title, and chapters, and extras, etc.). You need software that will made a DVD-V disc. Lacking that, you might be able to go to Share/Export Movie... or Share/Export using QuickTime... to get your video into a format that software like Roxio's Toast could burn.

This is called sessions, but it is not recommended and has been largely abandoned by software developers. This was a good thing in the late 1990’s, when opticals discs were quite expensive, and file size quite low.

Otherwise, I do not recommend you such time consuming and inefficient solutions, optical drives are being replaces by more capacitive, cheaper and more practical solutions, like external disks. But, if you insist, you will find what you are looking for.

Your email address (used as your Apple ID) does not matter, because iPods are not directly linked to a particular Apple ID.
NOTE: You can still use your old Apple ID, even if your that email address is no longer valid. As long as you remember your Apple ID password. Go here and click on Manage your Apple ID.

You can change the primary email address used by Apple, although the Apple ID remains the same.
Back to the iPod. iTunes syncing is generally in one direction only, from the computer's iTunes library to the iPod. You cannot use iTunes to transfer song files from iPod to computer, except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store. However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer. If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links. Three things you can try:
