Cd/dvd rom reads cds but won't read dvds

I have a pbG4 titanium (M5884) with a MATSHITADVD-ROM (SR-8187) and am running 10.3.9. I can play cds fine, but when I attempt to insert a dvd, sometimes I hear something and it spits the dvd back out. Other times, it just holds the dvd and doesn't mount on my desktop. Is there any update that I need to install? I am trying to upgrade to 10.4 but my upgrade is on a dvd. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi,
It could mean your drive has come to the end of the rainbow and needs to be replaced. However, you could try running a DVD cleaning disc in the drive.
Is it only the install disc that won't mount? Have you tried a movie DVD? Check the install DVD to see if it is dirty or scratched.

  • Drive can read DVDs and CDs but WON'T Right

Hi can anyone help with this.
When I put a blank CD or DVD in the drive I get the "This Disc Cannot Be Used Because It Is Not Recognized" message.
But the drive does read discs well.
iDVD has not been able to burn a DVD for a while and in the last few days I can't even burn a CD.
I thought It was the drive, so I replaced it and got the same message!!
So is this a software problem?
And can anyone give me a clue to fixing it?
    Thanks in advance?

LARRY I have a similar problem. Here is the Info. My son just got back from South Africa with a lot of
pictures on a DVD so I downloaded them onto My MacPro 2.8 single and then burned 3 Memorix DVD+R's for my Son and Daughter. I put one of them on a new DVD player I have hooked up to the TV
and it came up fine. My Daughter took it to work and put it on a computer at work and it would not come up. She brought it back home and I tried it on a new small DVD player I have and it would not come up. I had a friend burn the DVD on his window's Machine and it still would not come up for my Daughter. It came up on the small DVD player. The DVD in my MacPro is a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR 112D. My friend gave me a new Taiyoyuden DVD and it would not even come up on My machine.
So far I have not had any problems burning Music CD's or CD's with pictures on them. Help!!!

  • New iMac G5 20" loads and plays Cds but won't import in iTunes 6.0.1 (3)

"Error occurred while converting the file "...(dosn't matter which CD or tune)..". The required disc cannot be found."
I click ok. I can still click on the song in iTunes and it will play, the cd is still mounted on the desktop!!
    What's up ????????????????

I tried updating to 10.4.3, but no change. my pismo & emac work fine with same software

  • Can't read or burn CDs, but DVDs work just fine (reading, burning, ripping)

This isn't a new problem for my computer, its an issue thats been there since I got it (March 2008), I just haven't had it fixed yet.
My computer won't play or rip any cds (usually doesn't mount them, just spits them out) Also has trouble burning cds, but I have successfully burned a few.
Never had any problem mounting, playing, ripping, or burning DVDs though.
Anyone know of a way to fix this without taking it into an apple store?
And if I do take it in, how long would it take them to fix it?

I took it to the apple store, they did a test to see if it was a hardware or software issue, determined it was a hardware issue and replaced the optical drive.

  • I have a MacBook which no longer reads CDs but still reads DVDs what is the beat thing to do?

I have a MacBook which I have had for a few years now. It nooner reads CDs but reads DVDs, can it be repaired and what is the best thing to do?

Unfortunately it sounds like the drive has to be replaced.
    1. You can do it yourself. You can find repair guides at http://www.ifixit.com/
    2. You can take it to your nearest Apple Store and have them do it.
    3. You can send it to somewhere like TechRestore http://www.techrestore.com/
    4. You can buy a cheap external drive.

  • DVD will read but won't write A205-S5812

My DVD drive will read and play but won't write. Device Manager says it is a Matshita UJ-850S. I have upgraded to XP Pro sp3 from vista. I suspect that it is a driver issue but I have searched and can't find one that makes it work.
Has anyone else run into this? Any suggestions

Not a driver issue, or it wouldn't even read.  You are missing the program required for disk writing that Toshiba suppiles with factory installs, but is lacking in commercial versions of Windows.  It is not available as a download, only as part of the factory image.  Since you changed to XP, You'll need to buy some disk writing software like Nero or Roxio.

  • I have downloaded a bunch of CDs into iTunes but they no longer sync with my iPod touch.  They play on the computer but won't sync

I downloaded a bunch of CDs into iTunes but they wont sync withe my itouch.  It used to work but won't anymore.

Thank you all for your replies. Here is what i ended up doing. I cannot afford any 3rd party software so i went to itunes and manually entered all my playlists. As I had indicated my purchased music was on my new computer just not the playlists  and I could not sync my ipod. After I rebuilt all my playlists I tried to restore my ipod to factory defaults/new. All of the steps called for in apple support and elsewhere were not available to me. I connected my ipod, went to my computer, right clicked my ipod, and formatted. That wiped my ipod so when I connected to itunes it then gave me a restore option. I did the restore and all is good in the empire again. I can now buy new music and sync my ipod so I am a happy camper.
    Thanks to all.

  • DVD Drive issues, plays CDs but not DVD data or regular - Satellite (unknown series type)

I tried to update the firmware but ran into some strange issues. First of all according to google, the drive is manufactured by Panasonic. Toshiba doesn't make their own drives? For this reason I wonder if it is improperly detecting the drive make/model.
Anyways I downloaded the firmware update for it, version 1.03. It is a MAT**bleep**A UJDA760 (going from memory, model may be slightly diff like UDJA). When I run the firmware update it doesn't detect the drive at all and says it is for a THINKPAD?? Weird...
Also, if you have a link to a guide for removing this drive I would appreciate it. I want to verify that windows is detecting the model/maker correctly. It is not one of the simple hotswap types, it looks like I have to remove at least the entire bottom of the laptop.
I am working on this for a client, I do tech repair on craigslist but my laptop hardware expertise is limited most of my experience is with desktops.

Typically if the optical drive can read CDs but not DVDs (or vice versa), there has been a hardware failure of the DVD or CD circuitry.  Drivers/firmware aren't going to solve the problem, only replacement of the drive.

  • Dvd/cd drive works but won't allow me to install new programs from disk, doesn't recognize the disk,

dvd/cd drive works but won't allow me to install new programs from disk, doesn't recognize the disk, what can I do?

Well I was able to obtain a work around download of Flash and it installed fine but Firefox tells me it needs updating so I go out, thinking I'm "IN" finally to update it and I get that issue of not being able to get the update for it.  It's a regular laptop, not a touch screen or one of those new fangled ones for todays world.  In fact it's a refurb so it's probably origin date was a year or so ago before all this MS stuff took off fully.  So not understanding why I'm feeling like I'm being BLOCKED from getting the updated Flash I need and desire.  If I click on the little "X" and tell it to ignore the warning the vid will play just fine but don't want to have to do that every time.  Must be a better way.
Again, I'm sorry for posting in the wrong forum, getting this posted in the Flash forum was my desire but the way Adobe has this set up I just couldn't figure it out.  I belong to ALLOT of forums and most are pretty straight forward but this one is confusing!

  • DLT writes perfect, but won`t read!

    Hi,
because of one stupid replicator, who as a problem to take a burned DVD-9 master, we had to pack out our old DLT-Tape (which was dead), bought a new one, which writes faster than anything else which I have previously seen (Quantum DLT V 4) - but won´t read the data on the just written tapes.
It doesn´t matter if I write it in any DDP or CMF format. Any suggestions? Our G5`s won´t recognize the tape, so we updatet a G4 with FCP Production Suite and OS 10.4.9
Thank you and a nicer weekend than mine

i have the ultra scsi converter fr1sx and i make a dlt with the quantum 4000, but when i need reed the tape with dvd studio pro, don´t read it and appear a error message.

  • USB super drive for a MacPro retina. It recognizes CDs but not DVDs.

I bought a new USB super drive for a MacPro retina. It recognizes CDs but not DVDs. I am in region 1 and my DVDs are all region 1. This is the second drive so the problem seems to be in the computer. The problem is the same with battery power or AC adaptor. I  downloaded Adobe flash before I bought the USD super drive. Could this be the problem? Any suggestions? Thanks.

    MBP refers to Macbook Pro
Do the DVD spit out right away? (indicates a bad loader mech)
OR do the DVD spit out after several seconds (indicates a dirty laser diode lens) ?

My mini plays cds but not dvds.  Wouldn't this indicate a software, not hardware problem?

Not necessarily, the drive uses a different laser to read DVDs.

  • Can burn CDs but not DVDs

My CD/DVD drive worked fine until 3 weeks ago.  I tried to burn home movies to DVD using Nero and it stopped burning.  I restored my computer to factory condition and reinstalled Nero.  No help.  I bought a newer version of Nero and switched from Sony DVDs to Verbatim.  No help.  Then I discovered that I can send files to my Drive E: and burn CDs but not DVDs.
I downloaded all the Microsoft updates.  I have recovery discs but that is a lot of work all over again when I'm not even sure it will help.  I have 2 external drives where I keep my files and backup but I would still need to setup email and reinstall my programs.
I was about ready to buy a new drive for the computer when I saw on the internet that other people have this problem too.  I would really rather get the drive I have working.

    Hi,
Sounds like hardware problem, not software. Please clean the lens first, please try:

I have added many CD to my iTunes music library and then synched them with my iPhone so that I have all music in both places. Then I could the play them in iTunes or iPhone with no problems. Recently, my iTunes "sees" the music library but won't play any of it becuase "the original could not be found". If I attach my iPhone, then it pays them through the iPhone, but still not through the library in iTunes. How can I get the music library on my iPhone to transfer (i.e. restore it) to iTunes? I have iPhone 4S but have not upgraded to the iOS 6, and have not had any problems until last week.  Help!  Thanks.

Check the manual for whatever backup program you used, or, if you just copied the files over, copy them that.

Well, you're not telling us anything, that's the problem. No offense, but really, just saying that something doesn't work is not gonna yield any answers that would help.
