CD\DVD Storage Disconnects

Hello,
I'm using a product that is a Device control. I have two policies for my computers.  One for the Admin group and one for the Users group.
When I log in as an Admin my policy allows me to see the Device.  I'll log out and Log in as a User and then the policy applies and I cannot see the device but this is enforced in policy so this is working the way I have my policy setup.
The problem is, is when I log out the User and log back in as an Admin which the policy allows me to see the Device.  I cannot see the device anymore.
Why doesn't the CD storage Device re-enable when I log in as Admin.  The filter driver isn't applied anymore and I tried a Scan for Hardware in the Device Manager and Windows will not re-enable the device.  The only time it will re-enable is when
I do a reboot which this should happen because all the drivers have been reset to load in the hardware stack.
Thank You
CG

Hi,
So there’re two groups, “admin group” represents for admins and “users group” represents for standard users, right?
What product you’re using as a Device control? What policy you’re using for the computers? And how did you apply these policy.
For standard users, they can view the properties of these devices in Device Manager but unable to perform any changes, while Admin users have full control of these devices.
Since this issue is focused on that the policy blocks both admin and standard users, which is not what you want, I suggest you apply group policy in this way
Edit these policy in MMC.
Run mmc to launch control console, File> Add/Remove Snap-in, choose Group Policy Object, then choose specific users as you want.
If you already did this, then please share more information with us as I described in the beginning of the reply.

  • Itunes will cause my cd/dvd to disconnect

Itunes will start to read a cd for importing or playing and then stop I get a warning message that My cd/dvd was improperly disconnected. I have an IBM T20 with win 2000 and started to have a problem after installing a imagemate 8in1 media reader and my problem may be like the one in Article ID: 93647 but the solution will not work because I have win 2000.

    hi Jim!
okay ... this sounds a little unusual ...
could you tell us what the error message says word-for-word? i want to go searching through MS or googling on the message, but i'm not picking up anything obvious-looking at the moment.

  • LR Off-line DVD Storage - Any Thoughts on How to do

After time passes, I like to move raw files from my hard drive to a DVD. I want to continue to keep these raw files that have been moved to the DVD as part of my LR catalog, including their thumbnail image. This way I can easily locate raw files stored off-line on a DVD. So far my solution is to take all of the files that I will be moving to a DVD, add them to a child-collection called for example DVD-32 (parent collection is called DVDs-RAW Files). I also, select all of the files and add the keyword, in this example 32. Then I copy these files to the DVD-32, delete them from the hard drive. The folder(s) shows as red in the LR library folders. Each files thumbnail is still retained. When I select a file, I know what DVD it is stored on by looking at the keyword. The reason I created the collection of files on a DVD is to provide an easy way to know what files are on a particular DVD. This is a more cumbersome process than what I did using IMatch, which was designed to catalog off-line files. I wonder if there is a simpler way to do this in LR.
Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Also there are some pretty worrying reports about DVD and CD reliability unless you use the Gold Archive disks [that I use, but I no longer archive to DVD or CD].
I now use a grandfather, father, son backup/archive method with grandfather, father in my safe deposit box. When I feel enough changes have been made, I put son in SD box and bring out GF, reformat, check for errors, and do a backup to set the new baseline.
I check my HDs for errors frequently.
I only lost data once, that was when I was replicating deletes and my main HD got corrupted and I transferred those deletes to my backup. I like being able to "look" at my backup/archive files.
People may say that I should still archive to optical media, but to me it is no more safe than my method. I would have to constantly re-read my optical disks to make sure they were not failing.
Also, I expect to pass the 20,000 file mark this year and that is about 25 DVDs [expect 95 GB or so] and making sure they are good looks daunting. Maybe when/if the blue ray technology arrives with appropriate archive/validation s/w I will change my mind.
Meanwhile, I am looking at ads for 500 GB HDs :-)

  • How to import/copy songs from DVD storage to iTunes Library

My PB harddrive had a major failure resulting in total data loss. I have all my Itunes music copied to 5 DVDs (roughly 22g or 12 days of music). How do I get these back into my iTunes music library? I have tried:
    a) drag & drop copy from DVD (desktop folder) to harddrive/users/myid/music/iTunes/iTunes Music folder. This results in a transfer, but on opening iTunes, none of the music appears in the library. I tried "Advanced->Consolidate Library" but nothing happens; still no songs in the Library.
    b) drag & drop copy from DVD (desktop folder) to new desktop folder and then to consolidate library. Again nothing.
If I go to the folder and double click on any mp3 file, the song starts playing in iTunes, and is added to the library. BUT, it is impractical for me to click thru every song (>4000 songs).
    HELP

There are 2 ways to go:
#1 from itunes Menu - File choose "Add to library..." then select your DVD/tracks
#2 launch iTunes, drag+drop those tracks onto "Library" in iTunes' left column beneath "Source"

  • Upgrade Firmware and storage disconnect

During the firmware upgrade to version 2.0.2q everything went well until I upgraded the 6124 Interconnects.  I first upgraded the secondary then the primary.  During both upgrades the ESX Hosts reported loss of access to the datastore attached to the hosts.  The guests continued to ping which leads me to believe that the host did not really loose access because the guests run from the datastore reported as lost in vCenter.  Within 8 mins or so the storage error corrected.  My question, is this normal behavior.  Has anyone else seen this behavior during interconnect upgrades?

    Hi Joey:
Thank you for your reply.  Yes multi pathing is in place and failover does occur.  This was my test environment I did first.  I just noticed that of three hosts two reported redundancy link lost (which is normal) but one showed redundancy link and the managment network lost and access to the datastore for VM guests although VM guests continuded to ping normally.  The host however was not pinging in fact as being reported.
Anyway,  I went forward with production last night and all went as expected with only redundancy link lost during interconnect updates/reboots.  No problems.  So, I believe my test environment has a connection between the two interconnects switched around from when I first set it all up.  There have been some others working in my test area.
    Thanks again,
    Fred

  • Compressor for DVD storage

I exported the raw footage quicktime. I would like to compress into 4.4 gb that I can storage the compress of raw footage that I can get to expand out if I need the raw footage back. I thank you for your time and respond quick. Jerome

Compression is always a size versus quality compromise, so how much footage are you looking to archive?
What was the source material shot on? DV, HDV etc.?

  • Disappearing DVD storage space.

Using Elements 8, I moved 10 TIFF photos (totaling 51.3mb) to a DVD, using the multiple-session option.  On the 11th I got an error msg.  Upon checking the DVD, the PC showed it to be max'd-out!  Copying it back to C disk, the folder shows 51.3mb size.  I don't know what's happening.  Additionally, I wonder now, how do you finalize the DVD?  (Maybe this isn't an Elements problem?)   - Norm.

It's curious that formatting on-camera didn't work... You didn't put a erase-protect on the CF card, did you?
Well at any rate, when you format using the OSX Disk Utility, which file structure did you use?
All CF cards need to be formated using FAT32. In Disk Utility, choose "MS-DOS" as the volume format if you don't see "FAT32." Make sure you use "FAT32" and not "FAT."
As for external hard drives, they should work when formated as OSX HFS volumes, but if you do that only MAC OSX computers will be able to interact with it. If you want Windows and other digital devices to play nice with your external drives, format it using FAT32.
Also, when you delete the files off the external drive, you might have to empty the trash before you eject the drive for the files to completely disappear.

  • Superdrive stopped burning DVD no longer recognized by computer

I am using an i Book G4. I have been consistently burning DVD's on the superdrive for several days. Today in iDVD it said there was no superdrive on the computer. I can however play DVD's on the drive. Is this a soft ware or hard ware problem? I don't know what else to check. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

I assume what you were asking was what program I was using to burn the DVD. I was using iDVD and that is the program that first told me my machine did not have a burner. I use the disk image to actually burn the DVD. I have found it much more stable than trying to burn from iDVD no matter which of the 3 Mac computers I use. Thanks for you input. I was hoping there was a way to see if there was a software corruption causing the burn DVD to disconnect. I appreciate your interest.

  • B/W G3 & house full of non-DVD imacs, want to go to Tiger, ? FW DVD?

    Hello,
I've searched the forum and apologize if this question is redundant, but I'm requesting help. I've got a B/W G3 running OS9 which has a CDR drive. I also have three networked G3&4 iMacs running OS9 and a clamshell iBook running OS9. Only one of iMacs has a DVD drive, the rest are CDR or CDRW.
Will a firewire DVD such as a "FANTOM DRIVES PREMIER 16X DUAL LAYER DVD+/-RW FIREWIRE DRIVE" allow me to load OSX onto each computer? (I've been planning to add DVD storage anyhow.) Will there be problems with booting from the Firewire drive if I am able to load OSX?
I am aware of Apple's program that allows me to swap the OSX DVD for CD media; however, since I have to install OSX on five different computers will I have to purchase five DVD's? And, it says something about limiting the DVD-CD swap request to one per household.
    Thanks for any guidance.
    B/W G3   Mac OS 9.1.x

    Edwin,
Thanks for the reply. I did figure on purchasing the family pack.
How about the quetion about the DVD firewire, though. Is that an option?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

  • My Mac Book Pro does not recognize the presence of a DVD or CD

Ever since I upgraded my MacBook Pro, it does not recognize a DVD or CD of any type when I put it in. I have a store bought DVD, the Social Network, which worked fine before upgrading to OSX operating system. Music CD's were okay then, too. Now, neither is even recognized by the player. Thought maybe it needed to be reloaded, but na't figure out how to do that. This is very frustrating, and makes me start to second guess my decision to switch to an Apple product. I've only hd this computer about 18 months, did the upgrade last September (?) and have had difficulties ever since. HELP me please!!!

    Use Apple Hardware Test
Open the Help Viewer’s Action pop-up menu (looks like a gear) and choose Print to print these instructions.
Disconnect all external devices except the keyboard, mouse, display, and speakers. If you have an Ethernet cable or external DVD drive, disconnect them.
Restart your computer, holding down the D key while the computer restarts. After your computer restarts, you should see the Apple Hardware Test chooser screen. If you don’t, Apple Hardware Test may not be available on your computer. You may be able to start Apple Hardware Test from the Internet. Reconnect your computer to the network, and then restart your computer while holding down both the Option and D keys.

  • I converted from a PC to a Mac Mini.  I have my PC documents backed up on a DVD disk.  I have an external DVD drive connected to the Mac Mini.  I want to open them up and save them to the Mac, BUT....when I put the DVD disk in the Mac is NOT reading it!

I converted from a PC to a Mac Mini.  I have my PC documents backed up on a DVD disk.  I have an external DVD drive connected to the Mac Mini.  I want to open these documents up from the DVD storage and save them to the Mac, BUT....when I put the DVD disk in the Mac is NOT reading it!

    Hi Joe,
Thanks for your quick response.  I should add....it worked before.  When I previously inserted the two DVDs into this remote drive, and I went into finder, I could click on the "remote device" line and see all my saved documents (excel, word, etc) on the DVD and open them on the Mac.  Now I cannot see them, when I try to open them on the Mac, nothing happens, nothing is displayed.  I just re-tested the remote DVD drive with a CD and, no problem, it opened up the CD via iTunes and I cold play the CD.  SO......I know the remote DVD drive (it's an LG by the way) is fine, it's something to do with some settings on my mini mac, especially where I could open it previously.  I do not remember changing any settings since then.
When I go into system preferences and click on CD/DVD it gives me options of how to open up a music CD (default is iTunes), a DVD (default is iMovie), etc.  The problem is my DVD is all miscellaneious files/documents.  I just want to be able to see them in the finder.  I also tried to open them via microsoft word, from the remote disk and again, it could not open the drive, even though some of the documents were microsoft word documents.  Again, I was able to open them previously and the DVD is not corrupted in any way.
    Any additional advice?
    Thank you!

  • Do I need to buy more storage for backup?

Should I do more? Here is what I have so far for my iMac OS 10.5.8:
    1. 2 GB internal hard drive storage
    2. 2 terabyte external hard drive (Seagate - being shipped by Anazon.com)
    3. Time Machine
    4. 1 terabyte Time Capsule, wireless automatic continuous backup
Today at Best Buy I almost bought a 2 terabyte small ext. hard drive only/just for videos, pictures, and music. When I saw that it was a USB connection and not Firewire I decided not to buy it. But do I need to have that extra backup?
I was told that the external hard drive would be better than CD or DVD storage because with those two, you can only add more items five times, no more, whereas with an external small ”passport“ hard drive, I would not be similarly restricted.
    I welcome all opinions

do we speak of backup or archive, Lorna?
Timemachine/TM is a clever system to get back the version before the version before the actual version of a project..
TM will, when drive is 'full', start erasing oldest 'versions' ...
    but it doesn't do archiving.
    and here it get's philosophically..
books from the 13th century are still existing and are readable (if you 'speak' Latin...)
or movies from the 1920ies are 'readable' (= last week, the 'original' version of Metropolis had its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival) ..
ANY document, starting from the mid20th cent will be lost soon.. read the phrase 'digital dark ages'.. all your .docs, music, fotos, videos are 'digital' .. on 'media'. stumbling into probs with long-time-storage and compatibility.. anyone remembering 5¼" Floppys? beta video cassettes? Sonys MD music-disks?
a usb2-1.5TB drive is good for archiving, why not?
every once-in-a-while (6 months?) you manually drag in Finder the content of your backup-drive onto your archive drive. or, in Finder, you copy the 'originals' from any iT/iP/iM-Lib onto your archive drive.. for sure, you can backup this archive... and every 5-8 years, don't forget to upgrade and switch from SCSII to firewire to usb3 to eSata to ... and convert from DOS to fat to hfs to ntfs to ...
and speaking of 'backup + archiving' plus 'from Hawaii' - keep the archive.drive in a dry place ..
    (sorry, my corny humor)....

  • How do i make a dvd from an imovie

I made a new project in iMovie, and I want to burn it onto a DVD, but my iLife package did not come with iDVD, so how do I burn a DVD from iMovie without iDVD?

you have a very legitimate point. To my knowledge, there is no more secure way for archival storage than a DVD stored in a dark, cool, plastic enclosed jacket (to protect from scratches). after experiencing hard drive SATA storage discs (time capsule failures in particular) fail, want to go back to DVD storage, but now everyone wants to sell you a new program and 2 TB backups.
So what to do? Dumb down my Lion OS  back to Leopard and go back to the good old days when I could get something done?
Having "switched " from MS to Mac almost 4 years ago, ready to go back. I had fewer hassles with my computers, got more done, and had lower blood pressure ten years ago than I do now, although Windows is always a "Johnny come lately" when it comes to any new innovation, having merely perfected the art of monopoly. lately though, have become very disenchanted with Apple, and will not be replacing /repairing my MacBook pro, macMini,  iIMac when they finally break.
Is there any you tube site that someone could show me how to simply plug my Sony 8mm camcorder with the old Motorola style plugs (also has an S -video option) to the Mac Mini and burn the DVDs one by one? No editing. no fancy stuff. Just a straight out burn for archival storage? I want to get that done first before I mess with the hard drive back ups.
    Thanks

  • Span projects across DVD

Has anyone come up with a solution for backing up projects to optical media? I can make it work with small projects (DVD-sized or smaller) but anything larger than one disk becomes problematic, since I can't both preserve the project file integrity and span across multiple disks in a filesystem-readable format. Most of my projects, as I suspect yours are too, are more like 10-20 gigs.

The problem (maybe I'm doing something wrong) is that
I want to be able to read the files on the DVD
without reimporting to Aperture. iView can read the
project files, but not once they get split.
That depends on what is doing the backing up - if you use a program that backs up files individually and makes sure they are not split across discs (the only sane way to backup, as it's the only way to be able to recover a backup when the backup software is gone as well!) then iView should be able to see inside things. What backup program are you using?
If I could make "smart projects" that were dvd-sized
and then export those subprojects, I'd be golden, but
this doesn't seem to be possible unless I'm missing
    something obvious.
Well a different answer to that is to make "dumb projects" that are roughly the size you want - you can figure a rough estimate by taking the average RAW size and dividing possible DVD storage space by it, and dragging that many RAW files into a project as sets until you have enough projects to hold all your images.
Then instead of using those projects as organizational structures, define all image organization outside of those projects in a folder structure under yet another project holding albums and light tables and so on. You can put images in albums under any project, not just the one they are in.
The downside of that approach is your structure and light tables and things will not be exported automatically with any given project holding actual images, but you could simply back that folder up to DVD along with the many projects you have holding images by exporting the folder/album/light table project which would be very small as it has no images itself and could fit alongside the last image project on a DVD.

  • Driver filters that Itunes adds to CD/DVD drive

When I install or reinstall Itunes it adds upper and lower filters to my CD/DVD drive which then disable my CD/DVD drive. I know this is a problem with Vista since Microsoft has posted a step by step method for removing these filters (doc # KB929461). This restores the CD/DVD drive operation. The article claims that the installed drivers interfere with the current filters. The article does recommend attempting to reinstall the software (Itunes) because the CD/DVD storage stack did not migrate succesfully to Windows. However, everytime I reintall, the CD/DVD drive stops working. Other than buying a Mac (next time I will) how can I get Itunes and my laptop fully functional? Is there a patch somewhere that will correct this issue?

It would be best first to check for a device filter conflict. In particular, I’ve seen HP Memories Disc Creator Software (which comes bundled with some HP digital camera software) interact in this way with iTunes:
iTunes for Windows Vista: Troubleshooting CD issues caused by device filters
... however, if you're still getting no CD/DVD drive with *just the iTunes filters in place*, you may be one of the unlucky ones who are getting the issue discussed here:
Optical drives not recognized in Windows Vista after installing iTunes 7
Although it wouldn't necessarily be a short-term thing, keep an eye on that document for updated information about the issue.
In the short term, one workaround might be to use a different application to rip the CDs, and then use the "Add to library" function to get the ripped files into your iTunes. The following document might be of some help with that:
iTunes: About the Add to Library, Import, and Convert functions
