CD/DVD Superdrive...error messages

I dont think there is an issue with my CD/DVD drive but I could be wrong. I just installed a new hard drive and also upgraded to Tiger over the weekend. For some reason, I keep getting error messages in some of the installs I have doing. It happened when installing the Adobe Creative Suite, my HP Office Jet Printer, and iLife06. Weird thing with iLife is that I was able to get iMovie and iPhoto but iDVD and the latest version of iTunes didn't. These are all brand new discs. I still have to install the Final Cut Studio later this week and I need to make sure I can do it with no issues!

Hello
It will be interesting to know which error message occur exactly. The CD or DVD drivers burning problems are not easy to localize easy. If the drive doesnt work properly there must be many different reasons. The lens can be dirty, problem with lens calibration or different medias can not be readable correctly. Only thing that you can do is to check the burning procedure with a few different burning programs and medias.
Jp`s troubleshooting was absolutely right. If there is no positive result and if the warranty is still valid contact service partner in your country and let them check the unit. I am really out of idea what you can try to at that. Maybe removing the device from device manager and restart the unit but I dont believe that it will help.

    Great news JMD103.
There should be a big red pop-up, when one adds a Stop Marker to the end of the Timeline, saying "Do NOT do that!" That Stop Marker will almost always yield a failed Project output to DVD.

  • DVD burn error message

I get this error message when I try to burn a data DVD: "Burning the disk failed because communication to the disk drive failed. (error code 0 x 80020022)
I am attempting to use the original drive system (Pioneer DVD-RW DVR 104) and it plays CD's and DVD's without a problem. Thoughts? Jim

just had this problem with a 17" MacPro purchased in Jan 09. Toast Titanium 9 had no problems burning the CD. tried it again in Finder but backed the burn speed down from 24x to 8x - no problem.
I can only assume it is cheap media causing the problem - we have no problems with Maxell CDs at full burn speed (24x). The CDs causing the problems are Verbatims (rated at 1-52x) that have printable surfaces.
    hope this helps

The error "internal target failure" appears on PCs using this drive as well, so it appears that it's not a Toast specific error.
However, in my browsing, no one seemed to be able to tell if it was a true hardware failure of the drive, or if it was caused by poor quality media.
I'd try other brands of media and a lens cleaner before flashing the firmware. And, if you do decide to flash the firmware, the current, official firmware for that drive is here. The link in MLCinma's post contains hacked (region free) firmware and is outdated in any event.
Let us know what brand of media you're using and what speed you're burning at.
The DVR-106D has had lots of reports of failures, so it could very well be the drive. At least a replacement DVR-111D will only cost you about $40 - $50.

    Quit DiskUtility.

Launch DU, choose the .dvdr icon and re-try. That might get you running again.

  • Premiere Elemnts 7 won't make DVDs - NO Error Message

On an Intel P5K motherboard with an Intel core 2 duo processor with 2Gb of Ram under Windows XP Home I can get V1 to burn a DVD using a Sony DV RW DRU-800A DVD burner. Nero also works as does Sonic MyDVD. I have 120GB space free on my C drive and 271GB fre on my video storage drive.
Version 7, however, simply shuts down, with NO error message of any kind, when I click on Disc burn under the Share Menu. I tried deleting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4D36E965-E325 etc
    but to no avail.
As a user of Premiere since the days of Premiere 5 through 6.5 I am very disappointed to find a programme that appears to be no better than Studio.

I have tried all of the following to no avail. I also found that exporting to mpeg caused the same results, ie shut down with no warnig message.
All I succeded in doing was deactivating Windows XP Home.
    11. Disable startup items and services.
Antivirus software, firewall software, anticrash software or other applications and services that are typically loaded when Windows starts may interfere with the burning process. You can temporarily disable nonessential startup items and services from loading by using the Windows System Configuration Utility.
To start Windows in a simplified mode:
    Quit all applications.
    Do one of the following:
On Windows XP, choose Start > Run, and type msconfig in the Open text box. Click OK.
On Windows Vista, choose Start, type msconfig in the Search text box, and then press Enter.
Write down all unselected items under the Startup and Services tabs.
Click the General tab, and choose Selective Startup.
Click the Startup tab and select Disable All.
Click the Services tab and select Hide All Microsoft Services.
Select Disable All then reselect FLEXnet Licensing Service. If you are unsure whether an item is essential, leave it deselected (disabled).
Click Apply, and restart Windows for the changes to take effect.
Note: Upon restart, you'll be notified that the System Configuration utility has made changes to the way that Windows starts up. Click OK. When the System Configuration utility appears, click Cancel.
Right-click icons in the Notification Area and close or disable any startup items that are still active.
    Try to recreate the problem.
If the problem no longer occurs, then one of the startup items conflicts with Adobe Premiere Elements 7. Re-enable startup items one at a time, testing each time until you determine which item conflicts with Adobe Premiere Elements 7. Contact that item's manufacturer to see if an update is available.
If the problem recurs, then startup items are not the cause of the problem and you can re-enable them.
    To re-enable startup items:
    Do one of the following:
On Windows XP, choose Start > Run, and type msconfig in the Open text box. Click OK.
On Windows Vista, choose Start, type msconfig in the Search text box, and then press Enter.
Click the General tab, and choose Normal Startup.
Deselect any items that you wrote down in Step 3 of the previous section.
Click Apply, and restart Windows for the changes to take effect.
    12. Disable the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service. (Windows XP only)
Note: In Windows Vista, the IMAPI service is implemented differently and is not loaded as a background service.
The native Windows CD burning service (IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service) may cause conflicts when you try to export to a DVD or Blu-ray disc from Adobe Premiere Elements 7. You may need to disable this service before you export a DVD or Blu-ray from Adobe Premiere Elements 7.
Note: Disabling the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service disables the ability of Windows XP to natively burn CD-R/RWs.
To disable the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service:
Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel, and then double-click Administrative Tools.
    Double-click Services.
Right-click IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service and choose Properties.
If the service status is Started, click the Stop button.
Choose Disabled from the Startup Type menu.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Try to export an Adobe Premiere Elements 7 project to DVD or Blu-ray disc. If you cannot export a project to DVD or Blu-ray disc without error, then you can re-enable the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service. To re-enable the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service, repeat steps 1-6, but choose Automatic from the Startup Type menu in step 5.
    13. Switch the DVD drive controller to DMA Mode.
DMA (Direct Memory Access) and PIO (Program Input/Output) are used for data transfer. Drives that are set to use PIO instead of DMA require more CPU cycles and transfer data more slowly than drives using DMA. By selecting DMA for the DVD or Blu-ray drive, you may increase the drive's performance and reduce the likelihood of errors.
To select DMA for the DVD or Blu-ray drive:
Note: You must enable DMA in the system BIOS before you can complete this procedure. See the computer or motherboard documentation for additional information.
    Choose Start > Control Panel.
    Double-click System.
    Do one of the following:
On Windows XP, choose the Hardware Tab and click Device Manager.
On Windows Vista, choose Device Manager in the Tasks pane.
Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers and double-click an IDE controller.
    Click the Advanced Settings tab.
    Do one of the following:
On Windows XP, choose DMA If Available from the Transfer Mode menu.
On Windows Vista, select the Enable DMA checkbox.
Repeat steps 5-6 for each IDE controller in the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers list.
    14. Update the DVD/Blu-ray burner firmware.
Contact the DVD/Blu-ray burner manufacturer for the most recent firmware available for your burner.
    15. Update the video card driver.
Many video card manufacturers frequently update their software drivers. If you haven't recently updated the video card driver, contact the video card manufacturer for an updated driver, or download one from the manufacturer's website. (To determine the manufacturer of a video card, view the card's properties in Device Manager.)
    16. Disconnect additional DVD or Blu-ray burners.
If you have multiple DVD or Blu-ray burners connected to the computer, then they may cause errors in Adobe Premiere Elements 7. Disconnect any additional DVD or Blu-ray burners before you build an Adobe Premiere Elements 7 project to ensure that other burners don't interfere with the burner you use to build a project.
    17. Export the project using one of the DVD or Blu-ray compatible presets.
If you are trying to create a DVD, export the project as a standard DVD MPEG-2 file and use an alternative DVD authoring application to create a DVD. If you are trying to create a Blu-ray disc, export the project using one of the H.264 or HD presets and use an alternative Blu-ray authoring application to create your Blu-ray disc.
To create a DVD-compliant MPEG2 file from Adobe Premiere Elements 7:
    Select the Share tab.
    Choose Personal Computer.
Select MPEG from the list of available formats.
Choose one of the NTSC DVD or PAL DVD presets from the Presets popup menu.
Enter a name and location for the file.
    Click Save.
To create a Blu-ray-compliant file from Adobe Premiere Elements 7:
    Select the Share tab.
    Choose Personal Computer.
Select MPEG from the list of available formats.
Choose one of the H.264 or HD presets from the Presets popup menu.
Enter a name and location for the file.
    Click Save.
If you cannot burn a DVD or Blu-ray disc in another application, then the DVD or Blu-ray burner or associated drivers may be causing the error.
If you can burn a DVD in another application, then continue with the troubleshooting tasks in this document. Alternatively, if you were successful in creating a DVD folder, then you can use another DVD authoring application to burn those files to DVD.
    18. Disable Windows AutoPlay.
The Windows AutoPlay feature may conflict with the DVD/Blu-ray burning process and cause errors. For more information about disabling AutoPlay, see Windows Help.
    19. Refresh the DVD drivers list in the Windows registry.
Note: This task applies to DVD drives only. If your issue is related to a Blu-ray drive, skip this task.
Installation of other DVD- and CD-burning applications may alter the drivers list in the Windows registry. Refreshing this list may resolve problems accessing the DVD burner from Adobe Premiere Elements 7.
Disclaimer: The registry contains system-related information that is critical to your computer and applications. Before modifying the registry, be sure to make a backup copy of it. Adobe doesn't provide support for problems that arise from

  • Dvd burner error message "device failed to calibrate laser power"

When I try to burn a dvd, I get an error message:
The disc can’t be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media.

    Advice?

If Wjosten's suggestion does not work, clean the dvds - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50448 or use another dvd brand - Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden are highly recommended by Mac users.

  • Backup iTunes library problem using LaCie DVD Burner error message - help!

    Hi!
I just purchased a LaCie D2 DVD +-RW DVD Burner for my Mac Mini running OS 10.4.8 and iTunes 7.0.2. I've installed the latest LaCie drivers and iTunes recognizes the burner so no problem there. When I try to back up my purchased playlist iTunes checks the media everythings fine but when it tries to start the burn process I get this error message: "The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred (-8785)." It then ejects the DVD-R. The Burner works fine with Toast, so the issue is with iTunes. I've tried using both Apple DVD-R's and Sony brand just in case that was it. Any ideas? Please?
    Thank you,
    Sam

i recently got an error message while burning a dvd with lacie. i had been using the same cd's etc. found the solution on roxio boards (which don't allow just anybody to join obviously).
the problem is iSight. it can cause problems with the lacie while hooked up to the other firewire connection. unplugged the camera and viola!!! lacie works again.
    hope this helps you too!!!

  • When burning a dvd an error message comes up before the burning even begins

That is of course, if I can get the comp to read the DVD first.

Let me see if I can help out.
Just because your drive says it is capable of 8X doesn't mean it will burn at 8X.
Depending on what you are using to try to burn with in the way of software, I suggest you burn at a slower Speed. like 2X. Apples Software is entry level and it works but many users find harder to use than the top of the line in burning software like Roxio's Toast 7.
Here is the explination on the different DVD's.
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvd
Just bear one thing in mind.
When it comes to DVD Players, Formats, and Burners, of the hundreds of different manufactures, All are opting to be the Industry Standard, and it appears they insert there little chinks that almost force users to use there products exclusively.
There is always a backlash from these marketing ploys.
In a perfect world you would think any DVD would work in any DVD Player and Computer but sorry it is not so there are so many things that come into play. Format, Speed, Brand, Software used. Any one or combination can affect the process.
    The problem is multi-dimensional.
First check in your particular profiler on EXACTLY what type(FORMAT) of DISK's your burner will burn.
Next please do not just randomly go out and buy a spool of 30 50 or 100 disc's because they are on sale.
There is a HUGE difference in the type format disc's you buy
There is also a HUGE difference in the BRAND you choose, some are junk.
There is also a HUGE Difference in the SPEED of the media you choose.
If any one or a combination of any of the 3 mentioned above can cause burn error's or no burn at all or spit the disk out.
So it is a good idea to do a little homework on your Optical Drive and see just exactly what it is capable of and what it will use for media.
    (ONE LAST NOTE)
Many of the Media Manufactures are becomming aware that many of the Apple Burners are having trouble with there Media. Maxell has just come out with a brand new one that is. Maxell 16X DVD-R.
The key is read the packaging. this new media tells you that it will burn at any speed from 1X through 16X, and it works very well on the older Optical Drives. I also opt to use the individual that include the cases there seems to be much better quality, not like that of the spools.
Remember Apples Drives to date are much pickier than those used in the PC community.
    Cheers Don

  • Error message when trying to export audio file to DVD

I recorded an interview on a portable voice recorder and transferred the data into Garage Band by connection of a cable connected to the headphone of the device to the speaker input in the Mac. Garage Band took the audio file. It is 1.5 GB. I did some minor editing and wanted to save the file onto a DVD. When I selected "share" to export song to the DVD, an error message came up stating that the file was over 2 GB, which it wasn't. The file was then broken in two and one part was "shared", but the same error message came up. I took the computer to the Apple store for the Genus to help me with, but he had the same problem. The only way that he was able to save the audio file to a DVD was to select the file and place the file on a blank DVD. However, it can only be listened on a computer with Garage Band. I intend to use my voice recorder again to interview people. How can I input the audio file in the Mac and have it saved on a DVD to be played on multiple devices?

  • Help, DVD burning error

hello, I have been getting DVD burning error messages for the last two days. I have been getting the message "disk burning failed because an unexpected error occurred. there was also a message about not enough laser power to calibrate. I have tried slower speeds, a different brand of DVDs and a DVD Lens cleaner and still no luck. It started on christmas eve with Tiger and it's been doing it for the last two days on Leopard with the same system.

I created the same Topic, you can try looking for it. I just went and got my superdrive replaced, seemed to work ok.

If you don't have a SuperDrive you will not be able to burn DVDs.
Did iDVD come preinstalled on your Mac?  If it did then you should have a SuperDrive and be able to burn DVDS. Check the Disk Burning section of System Information

  • Error message when burning dvd

I have a flat panel 17" iMac with a superdrive. I have recently tried to back-up data onto a dvd. When I hit the burn button I soon get an error message. When I eject the dvd and put it back in to play nothing happens and the dvd is ejected only when I open iTunes. On a third and forth attempt the dvd gets spit out without any burn attempt.
Strangely, the first dvd I put in that was not readable on my machine I put in a Windows machine, which appears to read the dvd and I see the folders that I tried to burn, but obviously cannot open the files because it is a Windows machine.
I have read the discussions and dvd issues seem to be rife. I thought I had applecare but it appears it hasn't been registered and this issue is being addressed with apple. So I have not managed as yet to get any apple support.
Can anyone shed any light on my problem?
    Thanks
PS: The reason for the back-ups is that I am soon going to upgrade to Tiger. I see from discussions that issues about dvds are rife.

I didn't note the message I'm afraid. However I have just tried to burn a dvd again and got the message 'An error occurred while burning the disc. This disc cannot be used.' I have tried the burn with two different dvds and I don't think the discs are the wrong ones. One was DVD-RW and the other was DVD-R. I recall that on another occasion there was an error number, which might have been 303, but I can't be sure of that figure.
Whilst on burning to disc, I want to make an image of a folder. I follow the instructions of navigating to the folder and click on it but the resulting image is only of the folder and not its contents. Am I doing something wrong here too?
    Thanks.
