Cd/dvd wont read on HP Pavilion dv9700 notebook

HP Pavilion dv9700 entertainment notebook PC won't read any cd or dvd in the drive, but it does spin. PC is running Windows Vista Home Premium SP 2. It does not given an error message. It just stopped working and it is no longer under warranty. Can anyone help get it going?

First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
Vista
Check if the drive is now working.
If it still doesn't work, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'. In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager. Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives. Right click the drive and select uninstall. Do not delete drivers if asked. When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ). Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.

Disc drive no longer working on HP Pavilion dv9700 Notebook PC?

I have a HP Pavilion dv9700 Notebook PC that's running Windows Vista Home Premium. This morning I inserted a CDR to burn some files via iTunes and since then, my disc drive is not responding in anyway. I tried pushing the button on the disc drive, no response. I tried ejecting it via windows explorer, no response. I tried restarting my computer to see if that would help, no response. The light on the disc drive no longer lights up in anyway. When I tried burning the CDR in iTunes, it just kept displaying the message "Please insert blank disc" over and over and didn't recognize there was anything in the drive. So, do you think the disc drive has had it? Or is there some way to reset the disc drive or fix it? Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Go on the driver and support page,enter your lap top model ,then choose your OS and under audio panel download and install the newest driver. shouldn't be hard to be done

Dvd wont read disks

I have had My 13" inch macbook pro for three years now, and am having the problem that it wont read any of my disks and just ejects them out again after making a lot of noise.
Anyone got any help?

I regret that your product number alone did not provide enough information, when I did the search I got multiple results.
Would you also provide the series such as Elitebook or Pavilion G6 or Envy 4 to assist me in locating your notebook?
If you go to Device Manager and click on action and then select scan for hardware changes does it pick up the CD/DVD ROM drive?
You could also click on view and show hidden devices.
Do you see any unknown devices?
As you did receive this for Christmas you could also contact HP support for assistance as you should be in warranty. They can remotely connect to your notebook to help resolve difficulties.

CD/DVD drive not detected on Pavilion dv9927 notebook

My HP notebook is getting on my nerves and I don't know if this is an HP issue or a Windows Vista 64-bit issue, but has been an ongoing problem for months and I need a fix. When a disc is placed in the drive, you can hear it start up, but then nothing else happens. I have checked the BIOS and the drive is listed, however it is missing from My Computer and the Device Manager. To date, I have run Microsoft Mr. Fix It a minimum of five times with no success. I have manually gone through the whole "regedit" solution to remove upper and lower filters, which are not present and therefore not removeable. I have combed through numerous forums and have yet to find a successful solution. My most recent attempt was to run sfc /scannow in the Command Prompt and received the following:
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.logs
How do I fix my laptop without becoming a computer tech expert or buying a replacement?

Since it does not show in device manager you only have a few options.
Replace the drive with a new one or a known good drive, see if that one is picked up by device manager.
Reinstall Windows and see if it detects the drive now.

Pavilion dv9700 DVD/CD ROM stopped working: Code 10 (This device cannot start.)

I have a HP Pavilion dv9700 running Windows 7 where the DV)D/CD ROM drive fails to be detected. I can still get it to open and close. The device manager gives an error: Code 10 (This device cannot start). I read somewhere that iTunes upgrades can cause DVD problems in HPs, and I did upgrade iTunes a couple of days ago. I did upgrade the BIOS a few moments ago, but it didn't help. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Thank you for the responses! Sorry it took me so long to implement--I wanted to back everything up first before messing with the registry. Following the instructions to delete lines in the registry AND uninstalling iTunes allowed for the DVD/CD ROM to pop up with an exclamation mark in my Device Manager. Updating the driver did not help as the computer said the driver was up-to-date. Mysteriously, when I rebooted, the DVD/CD ROM disappeared from the device manager again. I forgot to mention in the initial post that the DVD/CD ROM light blinks steadily at about two blinks/second. Any other ideas? I am wondering if this is a hardware failure now.

When you say DVD drive is not working and cant detect disks, Is the Optical drive listed in Device manager and My computer? Is not reading any specific disks or all kinds of disks ?

Trying to upgrade from leopard to snow leopard.. my dvd drive wont read my disks, yet it plays music cds and movie dvd's...help!!

I just purchased snow leopard and I evenually want to upgrade to lion.. I have to put snow leopard on first in order to do that. I currently have leopard. I try to run my disks and they wont read, my DVD drive makes a ugly noise when it tries to read them.. I tried my original installation disk and it does the same thing. But when I put in a regular movie DVD or a music CD it plays them fine without problems. I called customer support, and they suggested I take it to a apple tecnician... cant really afford that right now....has this issue happened to anyone???? any suggestions???? HELP!!!

My HP Pavilion DV7 2206TX - DVD drive reads DVDs but not CD's.
When I insert a CD, the drive tries very hard to read the CD but gives up after about a minute.
I get no error message. I do not see the Auto play message.
Windows Explorer does not recognize the DVD drive.
When I insert a DVD, I get the Autoplay menu, Windows Explorer recognize the drive and the DVD. I can play the DVD using any number of Video players.
I would welcome advice relating this problem.

your HP Pavilion needs a new DVD driver. I ran into many problems such as this when troubleshooting computers in school.
A DVD drive should play CD at any time: While a CD driver will not play a DVD disc. Do not think there is a problem with sofware because it will only throw your troubleshooting skills out the window and it will confuse you.

Dvd player wont read dvds

as soon as I insert a dvd the dvd player applications loads and after 10 sec or so says "program wurde unerwartet beendet" (application has been stopped). Drive will read CDs, wont read dvds.

Hi, Bill.
First, patience is a virtue here. There's no commitment that any question posted here will be answered in any given time period. All answers are posted by volunteers on a best-effort basis.
I'd recommend that you check Console for clues, i.e. specific error messages that may display in the Console logs when the DVDs fail to "work."
Also, think about what differentiates those that "work" from those that don't.
Likewise, please define what you mean by "work." For example, do you mean DVD Player doesn't open? Are these video or data DVDs? etc.
As you can see from the questions I've asked above, you've also not provided much info in your original post, so perhaps that may explain why no one answered. Providing details in a well-crafted question helps one to get answers.

In your System Profiler under "More Info">Disk burning, it should list the compatible DVD formats.
