  • HP DVD Writer 740b not recognizing DVDs

My 740b will not recognize DVDs. I have no problems with CDs but any DVD I put in the tray isn't recognized. I initially thought the problem was with the DVD+R I was using but I also have a Slimline s3132w with a DVD writer installed and it burned and read the same discs with no problems. I tried several commercal DVDs (movies) and when I try to play them I get a no disc in drive error. I also have a Lite-On DVD SOHD-16P9S DVD ROM on the same system and have no problems what so ever playing the same discs. I have tried replacing the ATA data cables post attempting the trouble shooting tips given on the support web page. I have upgraded the firmware hoping this might alleviate the problem with no success. As I stated before this problem is only with DVDs, the drive has no problems what so ever with CDs. I have a feeling the problem my be with my updating to Windows XP SP3. I had done so before but removed it because my Linksys Wireless Adapter(PCI) wouldn't function with it installed. That problem has been repaired and now this. The system the drive is installed in is as follows:
     HP a1203w
                      cpu: Athlon 64 3800+ @ 2.2ghz
video: ATI 9550 w/256mb video memory
audio: Sound Blaster Audigy Z2S Platinum
             boot drive: Seagate ST340014A 40GB
    secondary drive: Seagate ST3250620A 250GB

OK chalk me up too to the list of users whose HP DVD Writer 740b cannot "see" blank DVD's and CD's.
Full marks to HP in that I am still smoothly running a Pavilion Media Centre PC EG211AA-ABG m7288a. I find the older plug compatablity useful and have beefed up RAM making it still a powerful "retro" media machine after all these years.....
However after a power failure caused a disk error that trashed my Windows XP and while it restored (as in full reset) like a trooper I took the opportunity to do a clean upgrade to Windows 7 (64bit) seeing as XP is no longer supported. And yes my HP DVD Writer 740b cannot detect blank DVD's and CD's although it can read those with content. It seems to be acting more like a CD ROM drive than a Read Write drive.
I have tried ALL the suggested fixes to no avail and yes my "shell detection" service is operational and on automatic.
But here's the rub as it were. My HP Support Assistant assures me that I have a HP DVD Writer 740b installed and running ED24 firmware. So I was hopeful when I found that there was an HP upgrade from the ED24 firmware (sp26595.exe - DVD-RW 16X HP DVD Writer 740b Drive Firmware Update ). HOWEVER even if I run it in XP compatable mode it returns the message that I do NOT have a HP DVD Writer 740b installed and therefore no upgrade is required.
The label on the front of the drive is "LightScribe DVD +/- Writer / CD-Writer".
Is the HP Assistant wrong in identifying it as an HP DVD Writer 740b? Also could the drive be getting confused thinking a blank disc is a lightscribe disc in upsidedown ready for printing? I have to try and find a way to reload the LabelPrint software (have the LSS) that was lost when I upgraded to Windows 7. Probably can't retrieve it from the old XP recovery disk.
Any NEW thoughts (especially as to why firmware upgrade does not see the drive) most wrlcome as apart from this one little thing the Pavilion is performing like a trooper and is an excellent advertisement for the durability of HP products (which is why we brought 3 HP laptops as well.
    Hopeful thanks in advance.

  • DVD Writer won't read disks

I have a problem with my DVD Writer in Windows 8.1 (64 bit)...after inserting disk (either blank or readab le), the computer hangs, and the only exit is to shut down the machine.  Device Manager   shows the unit as installed and working correctly.
I've tried all the following steps with no joy:
Updated, disabled and uninstalled driver (MS 6.3.9600.16384).
Tried all SATA ports and changed SATA data cable.
     Ran Windows DVD troubleshooter.
Ran MS Fix-it program.  It hangs computer after "Insert readable disk" .
Tried MS recommended registry hacks:  #3:  No upper or lower filters shown; #5: No help.
After this, I figured the fault must be in the DVD unit (a Lite-on) so I bought a new one (HP 1265d) and installed it.  Same problem... even after re-running the above steps!  Windows 8 installed OK months ago using the device,  and thats probably
the last time I used it for DVDs, so that pretty much rules out a System Restore.   I am now assuming that the problem will be found in:  (1) driver; (2) corrupted Registry; or (3) SATA ports on  the Motherboard (Gigabyte G41M-ES2L)
but have no idea how to proceed from here.  Would appreciate any help or ideas.

    Hi
It would be helpful if you included the optical drive model info (from Apple System Profiler), and complete your Mac profile; there are 6 different G4 models. Include what type of blank media, and whether the drive holds but does not mount the media, or if it ejects it.
applehistory.com can be helpful if you are unsure which flavour G4 you own.

  • Lg slim portable dvd writer is not connecting

    Hi there
I have a Macbook Air and purchased a LG slim portable dvd writer and its not connecting. What am I doing wrong? Is it not a compatible device?
    Thanks

I  had exact same issue, and not just with external DVD player, also with hard drive I was using to try and transfer backups of previous data...
Finally out of frustration I tried a different plug which has a double usb (plugged both into imac) and then the normal plug that goes into the LG portable DVD writer and VOILA - worked like a charm :-) ... same was true of my Transcend hard drive!!!
    Hope this helps!

  • Satellite L50D-B - faulty DVD drive does not recognize disks

Bought 2 months ago. The drive does not accept CD's, DVD's or anything.
The name of the disk doesn't show up on the drive and if you double click on the DVD drive icon (while a disk is inserted) the tray opens up and says please insert a disk. I've tried many disks so they are not the issue.
So far I've taken it to tech support where I purchased it.
They said to do a reinstall so I did - with the full clean drive. I've tried updating the drivers but the computer insists that they are the latest. If I search for my model number on the Toshiba driver support site it gets rejected and I have no access to drivers (from Toshiba).
I checked out a few other forums and tried the regedit fix but that also did nothing. If no solution is found (and I've already wasted hours of my life on it) then this notebook is going to back for a refund and I'll get one that is going to perform the simple task of playing a DVD.

    Hi
Sorry to hear that you have such stupid problem with your machine. On this virtual way it is not easy to say what is wrong there.
In my opinion you should not waste your time checking and searching for some drivers that probably will not help at all.
Reinstall original operating system that you have got with your machine and test functionality with factory settings. If the result is the same contact your local dealer or Toshiba service provider directly and ask for help. They can check ODD and exchange it if necessary.

  • My dvd writer is not working. 3000 C300

I have been not been able to get my dvd writer to write on either +/- dvd disc. Its says that the disc is not compatible with the drive or it will say that the drive is not recognized that I may need to update the drivers firmware. I have a 3000 C300 and I did upgrade it from Vista to Win7. Not sure if the dvd writer worked before this upgrade i never tried to burn a disc with the Vista. If anyone could help me that would be great. I really don't want to try and dismantle this computer and replace the writer all together although I really want to replace the processor on this system. I just is not something I really want to do so please if you can help me with this that would be great

  • DVD-RAM drive not detected

    Hello :]
I recently bought an old Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics) off of eBay. The only problem I am having with it is that the optical drive is not detected entirely (and isn't shown in System Profiler). I am pretty sure that the current drive is the original DVD-RAM one.
    Thanks :]

    Hi, sburton0 -
The lights indicate the drives are receiving proper power; the optical drive's external button will open the tray regardless of whether the Mac 'sees' the drive.
Since the Zip drive is also not shown in System Profiler, that could indicate an issue with the built-in controller for that bus.
However, it is not unusual for a cable to work loose when a machine is moved around and jostled, as can happen a lot during shipment and related movement. Check the data cable where it connects to the main logic board - unplug it and re-insert it, making sure it is well seated. Do this with the machine powered down, of course, and avoid touching anything on the main logic board.
It is possible for the data cable to get pinched inside the machine when the side panel/door is closed - if this cuts into the cable, it can cause a short or interruption. Make sure that has not happened.
In theory one of the jumpers on the optical or Zip drive (if either uses jumpers) may have become dislodged, altering the config of the drives' addresses such that the Mac can't read them. This is a remote possibility - once inserted, a jumper is not easily worked loose.
If it does appear that the built-in controller for that ATA bus has failed, a PCI ATA card should work as a replacement; the alternative is to replace the main logic board, which is far more expensive.

  • I have a plug in DVD writer to add my disk Adobe Acrobat onto my Macbook air, however, it says that I can't install as Apple do not support Microsoft programs, any help?

My disk will not install adobe onto my air as they say apple do not support microdot?

It may be worth saying, though you have probably figured it out now, that Mac don't run Windows apps and Windows doesn't run Mac apps. So if you go between them there is every chance that you will have to buy all of your apps again - if they are available on the new computer. This is a big deal and the cost of this should be budgeted in.

  • Error during Tiger install, disk utility (DVD) says could not unmount disk

OK, I'll start at the beginning. I was running 10.3.9 on my iMac G4. I hooked up a new firewire external HD. Transferred my iTunes music over, everything worked fine. Ran software update to make some updates (iTunes, Quicktime, Security Update, maybe another one) that I had been putting off because I had been out of space. That's when the problems began. It said I could not install updates, so I restarted. Then it hung up at Login Window starting. I did a few hard shutdowns (holding down power button) to try again, but was unsuccessful.
Read all the forums. Decided that I should have repaired permissions, etc. before installing the updates. So I started in single-user mode, ran FSCK, all that stuff, following the instructions very closely. Still kept hanging up at Login Window. So I started up from the Panther install disk, repaired permissions (made a bunch of repairs) and checked hard drive (said no repairs necessary). Restarted, still hung up at Login Window starting.
So I did an archive and install. There were errors near the end of the Panther install, and it said it could not finish. But the computer started up OK, and I was able to back up all my personal data onto the external HD.
So I decided to upgrade to Tiger, thinking that would fix everything. During the upgrade, it said there were errors installing files and to try again. Did so, same result. The computer did start up in Tiger, but clearly was not operating at full capacity (slow, some things didn't work).
So I decided to erase and install. Again, said there were errors and to try again. Did so twice, same result. Started up from the Tiger DVD and ran Disk Utility. When I clicked Repair Hard Drive, it said "could not unmount drive."
So now I am stuck. I have a wiped hard drive. Can't repair it, and can't get Tiger to install properly. Help!
(i do have an Apple store in town, but I haven't gone to the Genius Bar. Wasn't sure how that worked.)
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hmmm. And you're sure that when you select the main
hard drive entry in Disk Utility it shows a SMART
status report that says "Not supported"? That's
really odd because your model isn't too old to have a
    drive that doesn't support SMART.
Yep, looking at it right now. I've got the drive that says "38.2 GB ST3408..." selected, and it says "Not Supported."
By any chance would you have another external
Firewire drive on which you could install Tiger? If
you do, then you could try installing Tiger on that
drive. If you can then boot the iMac from the
external drive you could then try cloning the system
from the external drive to the internal drive.
I have the one external HD firewire drive. It has my backed up files on it. Could I still install Tiger on it without erasing those files?
You could do the same thing from another Mac if both
support Firewire. You could boot the iMac into Target Disk Mode while it's connected to
another Mac's Firewire port. You could then clone
from the other Mac to the iMac's hard drive that will
appear on the Desktop of the other Mac.
And I do have another Mac, which I am typing on right now. It's sitting right next to my "sick" iMac. If I recall correctly, it's an iMac DV special edition. It does have a firewire port and I think it has a DVD drive. It's running 9.0 currently.
You can use the Restore option of Disk Utility to do
the cloning. The process is as follows:
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the source or startup volume from the left
    side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    4. Drag the source or startup volume to the Source
    entry field.
    5. Select the destination or backup volume from the
leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry
    field.
    6. Check the box to Erase Destination. Skip this
step if you've already formatted the drive.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the
    Restore button.
So should I use the firewire external HD or the old iMac to do this? (Thanks so, so much for all this help, by the way. I really appreciate it. I love my iMac and want to save it! I have to go cook dinner right now, but I'll come back later to check your answer and try your suggestion.)

  • DVD-1285dx dvd/cd drive not burning disks and not reading some.

My HP Pavilion DVD-1285dx is acting strange. It reads some disks both dvd and cd just fine. When I try to burn new disks, the software I use, both trying to burn from windows explorer and also 3-party software, reads the disk and attempts to write to them. I then get an error stating that the disk has had an error so I think the disk is bad and nothing has gotten written to it. When I then try to read what is on that disk nothing is seen or the drive just keeps attempting to read it over and over again.
I have checked device manager and it showed no errors; I looked for updated drivers, none found; I deleted the the drive, rebooted then let it discover again, no change.
I ran Microsoft Fix-it which didn't find or fix the problem. I also installed a set of codecs suggested on a different board. When I found that it didn't correct the problem I uninstalled it.

  • DVD-ROM drive not detected in WinXP

If you need to know my system specs, they're in my signature. Anyways...
For the past month, I've been struggling to get my new AMD64 up and running. First the processor was bad, then the board, AMD had sent the wrong processor (I bought an Athlon64 2800+, they had sent back an Athlon XP 2800+, which would have made me angry had they not upgraded me to 3000+ for the mixup :D).
Finally got my computer back and everything seemed to work, then I started having problems (a random device would lose power during regular operation, forcing me to reboot and have another problem). Went out, bought a new case with a 500w PSU. Gutted my old case, put all the stuff in the new case, turned it on, things were fine. I was able to load WinXP onto an SATA drive I bought with no problems.
After WinXP was finally installed (and I got all my stuff from the PATA HDD :P), I went to update all the drivers and such when I noticed that there was NO CD-ROM drive. I'm not sure what it could be; it's the only thing on the primary IDE channel and it's set as the Master, and it worked fine to actually install Windows XP, so I'm not all too sure why it's not showing up.
If you guys have any ideas on how I can make it show up, I'd be most appreciated.

I've tried all that, but it didn't do anything.
See, here's the thing: The BIOS can see the drive just fine; I can boot from and install WinXP just fine. Once the installation is finished, however, I can't see the drive in Windows anymore...it's almost like it's not there anymore. I checked the connections of the IDE cable, and even took out my 40GB drive to put the DVD-ROM on the 2nd IDE channel and that doesn't work. I can confidently say that both IDE cables work properly since the BIOS can always find the drives that are connected to it, and Windows was able to see the hard disk regardless of what IDE channel it was on. Nothing has worked though.
I am getting desperate at this point; I have 3 other computers that I need to work on, but before I can do that I need a working PC of my own. I'll take any ideas you guys can give me. :(

  • DVD drive does not recognize disks

    Hey,
I have an e-mac with panther on it. I have been successfully burning DVD's for a few years now. This weekend I got an interesting error message. MY super drive would not read the blank DVD that I put in the drive and then it would not read ANY disk that I put in the drive. IT is like my Superdrive has fallen out of my system.
I believe the original error message was this: Put a blank DVD in the drive and then the drive would open and close and open again and say, "Please put a blank DVD in the drive."

Did you reboot? It sounds like a file systems error or incompatiblility. Do you have a "test" startup ID? If not, create one and turn off all utilities and applications and just keep IDVD or Disk Utility and Quicktime, Itunes, -- all apps that can view and read audio and graphis, movies. And close all the apps that are document readers-- Word, etc.
Then restart with the Test ID and try your drive then.
Keep this Test ID-- name it "to use SuperDrive" or something. Then when yo have time-- do the whole trial and error of turning one more app on and restart, etc-- takes hours maybe...
Also-- did you recently put in a new app or update? I've read that some of the Apple updates have caused problems with emacs and Ipods. So it is best to turn off or trash those upgrades and test that out. (you can always dl them again)
I bet it is just as simple as this-- some conflict with an application or new update.
