CD/DVDs Not Mounting But Drive is Recognized / SCSI Card Not Seen
Apologies for this mess in advance, but I thought it was worth seeing if anyone had an idea of what to try on either of these two issues from a system software perspective before I start breaking the computer apart and tinkering with hardware.
My G4 is the 733 MHz model which first shipped with the SuperDrive. That SuperDrive died years ago and I replaced it with an HP DVD Writer 300n which worked fine up until some version update of 10.4 though I can't recall the specific version. In any case, now the drive will not mount any CD or DVD that I insert, commercially-pressed or otherwise. The eject key on the keyboard functions properly, the tray opens and closes without problem and when a disc is inserted the activity light goes on and the disc spins for a minute and all seems normal, but the disc never appears on the desktop nor in any Finder window. The drive is still recognized in the System Profiler and I've double-checked the CD/DVD settings under System Preferences to verify that nothing is set to ignore there. I suppose it's possible the laser suddenly went bad, but as I said, the symptoms showed up following an update (though it was a while ago and at the time I had no need for a optical drive on this computer so I didn't address it then).
The second issue I discovered when I attached an external optical drive via the SCSI port I hadn't used in many years. That drive wasn't recognized at all and when I looked in the System Profiler the SCSI card isn't listed under PCI Cards. Is there a generic SCSI card driver I might be missing under OS X or will I need to open up the computer and determine which card I actually have in there?
Any suggestions would be appreciated and hopefully I've provided enough information to make that possible.
Hi K Roth, and a warm welcome to the forums!
I find Optical drives fairly short lived myself, but on the Internal, you might try PatchBurn...
http://www.patchburn.de/
Do you have another Mac with Firewire and a good optical drive?
If so you can boot the Other Mac into Target mode...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
Boot this G4 with the Option key held down, see if the Install Disc in the other Mac shows up as a boot choice.

Intel xserve with hardware raid. Volume not mounting but drives show good
So this morning we came in and found that our intel xserve with the hardware raid is not booting.
Booted from OS X Install DVD and Raid Utility shows the Raidset good and all drives good.
Open disk utility and no volume form the raid will show up.
ANY IDEAS!??!New information.
So out of the blue the Volume decided it needed to run an initializing run.
Apple care says I have to just wait until its done and see if the volume mounts.
Very strange since everything was green (good) until just then.
UPDATE:
Next day, the initializing has finished and now the Volume says (good) but the Raid Set is now "in transition". Applecare says I have to just wait till its done and see if the volume mounts. -
DvD will not mount but cd-r will When I install the the disc into the super drive the format box (disc utilities) comes up which is not the same box that comes up when installing a cd-r. I check the priference settings under general and it is set to show on the desk top.
Not yet will have to get one from a freind. I bought a stack of the Sony DVD+R and that is all I have.

Hi
I have a dvd stuck in the drive and as I can not boot is there a way of removing the dvd ?Boot with the option key down. You will see a window showing all the bootable systems. My MacBook Pro is no longer displaying the drives I plug into the USB ports.
Could someone tell me what might be wrong and how to troubleshoot? It's still under warrantee, thank goodness.
Many thanks to all,
NatalieI've noticed the Firewire bus to be less stable under Intel chips, but I'm not positive. It may be that my devices are just getting tired.
Anyhow... troubleshooting (when was the last time you cleared the PRAM?)
1. Turn off your MacBook (not restart, power off)
2. Turn it back on, wait for it to fully startup
3. With the power connected and the drive turned on, connect the Firewire drive
If it still doesn't work, can you try a different Firewire cable? I'm guessing the cable probably works fine on your iBok G4, right? If it still doesn't work, it would seem that the Firewire port is not working properly. You can also try booting up with your install DVD and see if Disk Utility can read your Firewire drive. If it does then you might need to reinstall OS X.
USB portable drive
Repeat steps 1 and 2 above
3. Plug your MacBook into AC power (my USB drive will not mount unless I plug into AC power)
4. Connect your USB drive
Again, I'm guessing this drive too works fine with your iBook?
You could try accessing the drive while booting up from the install DVD too. This should rule out whether it is a software or hardware problem.
It's a hardware problem if you can't access either the Firewire or USB drive (on AC power) while booting up from your install DVD. It's a software problem if you can.
Good luck

DVD/CD/Blu-Ray Drive on HP Pavilion DV6 not working....
HP Pavilion DV6 with Blu-Ray
The DVD/CD/Blu-Ray drive suddenly stopped popping open or being recognized. I need to double check that there is nothing else I need to try to fix before having to buy a replacement part.
I've already tried....
1. reseting my computer back to factory settings (I know I had a virus or malware and then when it died I just decided to set the whole thing, but it didn't fix the dvd drive)
2. Removed cd. (I had to remove the drive to get the cd out. It was a library cd so I thought that the security strip on it might have caused a problem.)
After these two things it still isn't working. Everything else is fine. I just want to make sure there is nothing else I need to try or check before buying a replacement part.Hi RavenMidnight,
For the DVD/CD/Blu-Ray drive no longer ejecting, there is not much troubleshooting that you can do to resolve the issue. I have included the document 'Opening a Stuck CD or DVD Drive Tray (Windows 7, Vista, XP)'. This document will show you two ways as a work around for opening the drive. When you do have the drive open, double check to make sure that there are no obstructions in the path of the tray.
If there are not obstructions, and the tray is still not functioning properly. I have included the document for 'Steps for Removing and Replacing the CD or DVD Drive'.
Please let me know if any of these steps have resolved the issue, thank you.

Xserve Not Mounting Firewire Drive and Keyboard Not Working On KVM Switch
A couple of days ago I was swapping out my monthly firewire(800) backup to put the daily one back in place and my daily firewire backup drive will not mount. I've tried swapping out the cables, tried USB and Firewire400 with no avail. I tested the drive on my G5 and whapaa it mounted right away and the data is readable. For some reason my Xserve ignores it. I checked that the lock is in the unlock position so that's not the issue. I ran an xrdiags test last night and it came out fine. I also applied all of the latest updates. HELP!!!
Not sure if this is related, but my Xserve has begun to ignore my KVM switch so I have not direct keyboard/mouse connection. What could be the problem?
The backup drives are Western Digital My Books.Problem fixed. Follow the instructions on this KB article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338
So if you ever have these symptoms, follow the instrucions above, it works like a charm.
Thanks for your input DP. -
IMac 27': iSight camera is not working but it is recognized in Utilities
My iSight camera is not working. I'm sure it is not a hardware problem, because when I reinstalled MacOs Lion it worked for some time. I'm sure is a software problem. When I run FaceTime appears the message that "No camera is connected", also in Photo Booth is not working.
(1) First, be sure connections and other issues from
here are eliminated as possible problem causes:
(2) Then, if Apple's http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
suggestions do not help you, (the "reset" suggested there
often restores normal function,) continue with the following.
(3) Use Disk Utility to repair permissions and then
download and apply the 10.7.2 Combo Update:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1459
(4) Repair permissions again immediately following the
system restart that completes the Combo update.
Properly applying the Combo version of updates can sometimes correct problems like yours.

External Firewire Drives not mounting but shown in Disk utlilty
Well the title says it all!
I can see my ibook in target mode on my new macbook in disk utlity but not in finder!
I want to copy over my documents folders (I have tried migration assistant but it can't see the mounted drive either!).
It works fine the other way (i.e viewing the macbook in target mode on the ibook)
Details:
Macbook 2.2GHz (new model) 10.5.1
Help!Is the Mount or Unmount button greyed out in DU when you highlight the Firewire icon? If you can click the Mount one, do so. If you can click the Unmount one, check the Prefs in the Finder menu to make sure that you are showing attached drives.

Hard Drive Not Mounting, but showing connected in Disk Utility
I accidentally locked myself out of my external hard drive. While it was connected, I went into the Info and went under "Ownership & Permissions" and unchecked the Ignore ownership on this volume and I clicked the You Can drop box and changed it to No Access. The drive doesn't mount on the desktop anymore but I see it in disk utility. What should I do?

Looks like it was a driver / incompatibility / unsupported issue since 2 other much smaller USB keys (Lexar USB Flash Drive – 32GB, SanDisk Cruzer Colors – 4GB) were successfully mounted automatically by volfs service as follows:

I need a suggestion about G Drive mobile which can not be mounted with my macbook pro
Hi Buterem,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your MacBook Pro since your recent Yosemite update. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. If you are having intermittent but persistent responsiveness issues with your mouse or trackpad, you may want to try using Activity Monitor to see if these incidents correspond to occupied system resources, especially system memory or CPU. You may find the following article helpful:
How to use Activity Monitor - Apple Support
If the entire system hangs or locks up (for example, if the system clock freezes and stops counting up), you may also be experiencing some variety of Kernel Panic. If that is the case, you may also find this article useful:

How to boot OS DVD from a external drive (holding down "C" does not help)
Hello friends...
I am updating my girlfriends Tiger G4 to Leopard. She has a internal CD drive, but not a internal DVD drive. I have a external Pioneer DVD USB drive that I have plugged into her G4. I can place DVDs in it and load software from it.
However, I can not seem to boot a Leopard DVD from it. At first I installed the DVD and it came up on the desktop. I selected the correct icon, and it said it now had to reboot which it did. I selercted "reboot". I held the "C" key down but in all attempts, it would boot to the desktop of the tiger OS. So I went into "start up drive" in preferences, and saw the Leopard DVD. I selected it, then selected reboot. It would still bypass my external DVD drive and boot to the tiger desktop. The external DVD USB drive is called Pioneer DVR-X122.
Any help on getting her Leopard DVD to boot from this device so I can update her OS? She has a lot of free HD space, and over 1 GB of RAM. Her G4 meets or exceeds all requirements from Leopard as far as I can tell.
Thanks in advance.
Sincerely,
jackAny help on getting her Leopard DVD to boot from this device so I can update her OS?
You can't use that drive. An internal or FireWire drive is needed. If it and the G5 are physically close to each other, connect them with a FireWire cable, insert the DVD in the G5, and start up the G5 with the T key held down.
