CD Eject not working?

So I just reinstalled arch, and now I have an odd problem... when I hit the cd drive eject button or right click on the icon and hit eject it say 'cannot eject volume' twice (no details other than that) then allows me to eject normally. if i run 'eject' from terminal it works fine the first time around. my research has led me to believe that this may be a problem with HAL but the solutions that have worked for others haven't helped me so far. does anyone have any suggestions/ideas?

Right - the story is concluded - Finally!!!! Apparently when the technician removed the optical drive unit whilst fitting the new power supply and logic board he didn't fit the cables back into the right places on the drive!!!
But at least now its fixed and I can get back on with some work.

  • 10.4.9 control-eject not working

    Hi all,
After the 10.4.9 update the shortcut control-eject doesn't work anymore on my iMac 24" and MacBook (both intel). Anyone that knows a solution?
The control-eject shortcut is for the Shut Down, Sleep, or Restart Options dialog.
    iMac 24" & MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

This improvement seems to be undocumented and it should be explained as you have done.
I often hit that key accidentally, when reaching for the Delete key and it was annoying. Especially when the mechanical eject went through its motions.
Now, if you notice, when you press the Eject key, in addition to the delay, if there is no disc in the drive, the mechanism doesn't go through the eject cycle as it previously did, saving time and reducing wear on the mechanism.
Apple should document these changes in detail - I have not found this one in searching through their documentation.
I also use the key combo Option-Command-Eject to put my computer to sleep and after the update it took me a few minutes to realize that the Eject key operation had changed.
Thanks again from many of us.

  • Vista 64 bit with apple wireless keyboard volume, cd eject not working

I successfuly got Vista Ultimate 64 bit installed in Boot Camp on my Mac Pro, and got my Apple wireless mouse and wireless keyboard working after some trouble. But I still can't use the volume control or the cd eject or brightness control keys in Windows Vista.
    Any suggestions?

Maybe you could update the Boot Camp drivers. That happened to my internal keyboard, and updated drivers some times fixed it. Other times it fixed itself after a few restarts.

  • Audio CD import is not working the cd is ejected before itunes can read it

audio CD import is not working the cd is ejected before itunes can read it. Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Lainey

Does this happen with all cd's or one in particular?
    Reset the SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Reset the PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Try a cleaning disc. You can get them at places like Radio Shack.
If nothing helps your optical drive has probably failed. You can replace it or purchase an inexpensive external drive. Don't buy the Apple SuperDrive as it won't work with macs that have a built in drive.

  • Remote control and eject button not working?

    Hey.
Not too much to explain - my remote control does not work at all, and neither does my cd eject button on the keypad. This is after the installation of Leopard.
I've tried to search for the issue but only find people complaining about the new Front Row design or how they cannot eject volumes at all. (Which is not my case)
Has some people had this error and fixed it?
    Thanks in advance.

The remote control could be because I deactivated my IR receiver
    That leaves my eject button.

  • Aluminum keyboard eject button does not work on Windows XP

I'm wondering if anyone else has the same issue:
the eject disk button on my new aluminum keyboard does not work in Windows XP (Boot Camp).
As I have a Mac Pro, there is no way of manually opening and closing the tray-loading Superdrive.
I can open the drive if I right-click "My Computer>DVD drive>Eject" but there is no way of closing it back. I am obviously not a Windows XP expert, are there ways of mapping the eject function to any key?

Actually, how does Software Update figure out what apps you have available for update?
I always thought that Software Update looks at your /Library/Receipts to check what Apple pkgs you have for update, so I assumed that any Apple-related Pkg would be updated. I may be totally wrong on this, correct me if that is so...but thanks for the info.

  • Eject key not working with MBA Superdrive

For MBA owners with MBA Superdrive, could you please let me know if the Eject key is working? I just bought a MBA Superdrive but the Eject key on the keyboard is not ejecting disc. When i press the Eject key, i don't see the gray Eject icon on the screen, unlike all other function keys (for example, volume control, keyboard backlight control and screen brightness control). I can ctrl-click (or right-click) on the disc and select "Eject" to eject disc. If i do a ctrl-Eject, i can get the "Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now" window to show up so the Eject key does not appear to have any physical or electrical issue. I can also boot into Boot Camp (Windows 7) and the Eject key works perfectly.
I have installed and uninstalled Virtual Box and Parallels so i am not sure if my problem is related to that.
Apple's tech support recommendation is to do an archive install, which in theory will keep all my personal data but create a new Systems folder. But i would like to try something less drastic before going that route.

Thanks. I not only did an "archive install" of Snow Leopard, i also did a erase install. But the Eject key is still not working like it's supposed to. I think i am going to try clearing the PRAM next.

Hi there. Hear are some other options . Hold down for click on the track pad while restarting and keep it down all the way thru boot. Or use right click on a mouse. If it's stuck, sometimes sticking a business card in top edge of slot while trying the eject option can work.

  • Eject button not working on dvd/cd tray

You name it, I've tried it! Apples advice was to backup my work and wipe the dripe and reinstall the OS. Guess what - the eject button still doesn't work! Well done apple. That'll be 2 days wasted of precious production time.
All this after a new power supply and logic board being installed by the apple store in birmingham because the mac had no power going to it. (6 week old MacPro 2.66) Yet the eject button worked fine when it came back from repair.
Has anybody got and realistic ideas as to why the eject button doesn't work.
I can manually eject the tray and also when using toast I can eject the tray - its just in the OS that its not working. I hav tried dropping a link to the eject button on the customize menu but the icon is just greyed out.
I have even dropped in a brand new cd/dvd drive from another mac still with the same result.

  • Superdrive not working, ejects disks

My Superdrive is not working anymore, it's being recognized in the disk utility but when I insert any disc I hear it reading it for about 20-30 seconds then it just ejects it out.
What would possibly be wrong with it and how can I fix it?
    Thanks in advance!

My THIRD replacement superdrive arrived today. Guess what? No matter what disk is used, the disk is NOT supported; it is ejected. Being a contrary person, I turned the sperdrive upside down, that is the Apple logo is down; the same rejection.
    My conclusions are:
    1. The whole **** lot of air superdrives MUST be returned back to the Chinese factory.
    2. Any air superdrive MUST be tested by Apple before shipping.
3, I am in the process of writing a letter to the Apple President Mr. Job asking that he stop hustling new products and FIX some of the core products that don't work.
    4. I also suggest that as Apple are incapable of making workable air superdrives, a company such as Hewlett Packard be franchised to make air superdrives. I have a 15-year old HP laserjet that worked the FIRST time it was plugged and it is STILL working.

Would you rather upgrade to windows 8, BlackBerry or Android phones? Do you honestly think those don't have problems?
You waited a lot and chose to buy an early production model. Mistakes happen all the time a factory retools and workers relearn new skills necessary to keep US happy.
Exercise your rights.... Send it back for a new one.
In any case, I feel your frustration. Btw, I love Apple but use a Blackberry

  • Eject key not working - Tried another keyboard

Suddenly my eject key is not working. I have tried holding it for several seconds. The eject logo shows up on my desktop. Itunes can open the drive, toast can open the drive, eject menu can open the drive. A second aluminum keyboard will also not open the drive.
Since the drive can be opened by software, I need to know what system file to open and what code to look at so I can fix this thing I have read lots of temporary fixes in the forums here (use iTunes or the menu extras eject script) but I want a real solution. It used to work and I want to know why it stopped.
Is there a way to examine keyboard mapping or something??
    Thanks

Apple authorized service provider has replaced the logic board due to various weird problems including sudden loss of startup chime, freeze on waking from sleep and memory issues.
During the repair event (it was an event let me assure you!) the service people noticed the Superdrive was plugged into the number 2 position on the ribbon and since there was nothing in the number one spot, the eject key didn't work. I had tried holding the option key while pressing eject (for drive position 2) but that didn't work either so not sure if switching to connector #1 or new logic board solved this problem, but the DVD tray now opens and closes using the Media Eject Key!!!

  • Optical DVD drive ejects any inserted disc and does not work!

I can not read or write certain DVDs in my Mid-2009 MacBook Pro since upgrading to Mountain Lion.
I insert an empty DVD-R (Verbatim) and it is being ejected. I insert a recorded DVD-R (Verbatim) and it is being ejected.
I have tried a commercial Video DVD - (Sony) and that one actually did work ... so I am pretty clueless - I can not write any DVD right now.
In the forum I have found many posts regarding this issue under Lion already.
However, my drive used to work fine under Lion and I was able to watch / record DVDs etc.
Now, it is no longer working and I can not use it. Does anyone know how to solve this?
So far I have found the following hints (which did not work for me):
ALL OF THESE THINGS DID NOT WORK:
    1) Reset the PRAM (https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379)
    2) Uninstall all virtual machines (Virtual Box, etc.)
    3) SMC Reset (https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964)
some people talk about it being an issue with the 64 bit kernel and that you should try to reboot into 32bit (holding down 32 on startup)
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3770
others blame it on the UDF format (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3413998)
There are too many articles in the forums about this - more to make this a random issue.
The most disturbing thing to me is that multiple of the people in these threads contacted Apple and in the end where told, it's probably a bug... now why is this - obviously critical bug - not being resolved, yet ?

I also had the same problem shortly after upgrading. My optical DVD drive ejects any disk I put in. This started about 2 months ago.
I just got back from the Apple store, after setting up an appointment, and they told me that my life is horrible because my MacBook Pro is no longer under warranty as of 32 days ago. This is really BS.
However just like any other company that treats me with poor customer service I just take my future business elsewhere and make sure not to recommend them to any friends and family - as well as tell them about my horrid experience.
