CD label stuck

heres the story: i had to preview a cd and because it is yet to be released it had a crappy paper sticker with the name of the band/album.
my imac started making weird noises so i tried to eject the CD, to no avail.
Had to unplug and then restart holding the mouse key down. It was a success, HOWEVER the cd came out with half the label missing- which means half the label is still in my computer.
Now im too paranoid to use it because im worried it will set fire to my house.
Any suggestions?

Do you still have Applecare or the original warranty left? If so, this happened to a co-worker of mine, he took it into an Apple Store and they got it out.

  • Label misplacement after font change

Below label misplacement bug was mentioned earlier (here).
    Bug description:
There is a label misplacement bug when you change font (type / size) or change your default font, which can also happen during conversion to a different LV version on a different pc (with different environment settings). This bug misplaces the labels horizontally, especially when the label is positioned halfway horizontally or even halfway vertically on any side of a property node or control / icon.
It could be reasoned that proper placement of text after its font is changed can be very hard to get right in any programming environment.  At least one of the combinations: label stuck to the right side of an item (property node, etc.), placed half-way vertically should be easy to position properly though.  (horizontally at least)  Since this is where I (intuitively) put many of my labels for property nodes I would like to have this fixed.  This bug has been present in LV for at least several years.

    Hello Ettepet,
    Sorry for the delay.
I didn't fully follow the procedure of steps you were explaining before and therefor I couldn't reproduce it.
I see similar behavior (but to a lesser extinct than 2 full chars) when I play around with the font size of the default font.
During the next week I'll search through the existing CARs and file a new one if it doesn't exist yes.
If it does exist, then I'll provide you with the CAR number and add you as a person experiencing similar issues.
PS: Sorry for the delay, I was teaching 2 courses during this week.
Next week i'll be back on normal support shift.

  • Some CD and DVD media no longer works

When custom burning CDs and DVDs, the quality of the media matters as much as the drive chosen. It has been found that spindle stored media, label stuck media, and ink written on media, and media burnt at the maximum speed can become unreadable a lot more than the alternative. After researching this topic thoroughly, I've come to the conclusion that following these basic steps in buying, burning, and storing discs will lengthen the life of media:
    1. Store media in jewelcases.
    2. When it is CD, make sure it is made by Verbatim, Kodak, Imation, Sony.
    3. When it is DVD make sure it is made by Verbatim, Ritek, or Taiyo-Yuden.
    4. Do not apply sticky labels. Don't write with markers on the disc. Use jewelcase inserts to organize contents of disc externally.
    5. Burn at less than maximum speed.
    6. Fit the criteria here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2446?viewlocale=en_US
    7. Use the format of ISO-9660, as opposed to UDF, or Joliet, when not burning standard audio, photo, or standard DVD movie discs. ISO-9660 is more compatible with both Mac and PC platforms.
While not a permanent solution, it is better than the alternative of finding discs that simply won't burn, or getting media that gets stuck in your drive.
Recommendations for media manufacturer here are based on lengthy research of various sites on the internet.

  • Advice for getting the Geniuses to believe you

I've been having RAM issues with my MBP (see thread here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4484724) and have narrowed it down to a physical issue with the chassis/logic board/RAM module, a loose connection or arcing or something existing somewhere in that mix.
Whenever the laptop is lifted from the bottom with the weight being supported in the middle (where the RAM module is), boom, freezes and beeps. Whenever it's lifted from its sides, nothing. Same thing while it's on the lap.
Question is: How do I convince folks at the Genius bar to believe me in order to get a repair rolling? I'm thinking that repeating the above to them will be met with a bit of hesitation / "uh-huh, sure guy" kind of reaction.
Any geniuses out there care to chime in?
    -Kyle

Side note that may have a bearing.
These modern high-density SoDIMM modules have exceedingly small and narrow tolerance contacts prone to issues. When I upgraded to my latest 16GB Corsair sticks (2x8GB), turns out that a minute tuft of lint had adhered to a bit of adhesive that oozed from under the label stuck onto the RAM socket holder. Didn't notice it when I stuck the topmost stick on and closed the Mac. Well, it did not work. Refused to recognize the module.
Only until I reopened the Mac, removed the module and thoroughly cleaned the place, removing all the offending lint, did everything work as expected.

  • I can't eject DVD

I edited a project on Final Cut Express. I used iDVD to burn the project. I inserted the DVD into another iMac. The DVD did not start. I did not even get an icon on the desktop. And I cannot eject the DVD. I tried the solutions listed below which I found in another post. They did not work. Any suggestions?
    Resolution
Important: Make sure the disc is not in use. Quit all applications that are using files on the disc.
    1. Place the computer in sleep mode.
    2. Press the Media Eject key at the top-right corner of the keyboard.
    3. If that doesn't work, drag the disc's icon to the Trash.
    4. If that doesn't work, restart the computer, then hold down the mouse button.
    5. To restart, choose Restart from the Apple menu.

You don't say if the disc is a plain DVD or whether the DVD has a label stuck on it.
What I think I would try if all the stuff you list has failed to fix the problem will be to try starting up in 'Safe Mode'.
To do this, restart the Mac whilst holding down the 'Shift' key until you see the spinning asterisk. When booted the Mac should display the words 'Safe Mode' at the top of the Accounts menu.
It may take a while longer than usual to get to the Accounts Menu because the Mac does a few checks and things, so I understand. This may clear something. When still in Safe Mode it might a good idea to run Disk Utility to repair permissions.
Try the 'Eject' button on the keyboard again.
If that doesn't work, restart again - holding down the Mouse button again if you wish.
If that fails, and especially if you have used a DVD with a home made label on it, I would suggest taking the computer your nearest Apple Dealer to see if one of their Geniuses can extract your DVD for you.

  • Can't Upgrade Bootcamp With Leopard Install Disc

    Hi Everyone,
I just installed Leopard and wanted to upgrade my Bootcamp partition. However, when I start up in Windows and then try to install the new version, all it does is hang at Marvell Ethernet (which is the first driver to be installed). Now, one thing may be the problem--the drive that I am currently using to start my Mac-let's call it Drive 2, is not the same drive that Bootcamp is installed on, which is Drive 1. I wouldn't see how that could be a problem because I'm starting up in Windows, not from the Mac. Anyway, any suggestions? Thanks.

That isn't the original install disc as the one that came with the computer would be Grey in color, a very drab looking disc, however, if that was purchased from Apple and not a copy of another disc with just a label stuck on it, it should work.  However, if the disc were damaged then you would have the same problem you are having.  I would try to see if you can get another disc and try that (If you know someone that might have one).  If that doesn't work, then take it to a Genius Bar and have them look at it, they may be able to help you out.

  • How do I change the date format to standard dd/mm/yy?

I've looked through the settings, I've looked through the help files and I've searched the forums, but I couldn't even find mention of this. My phone will only display the date as mm/dd/yy, which as far as I know is only used in USA and I've set my location to London.
Normally this isn't a problem unless the numbers are close eg. 11/10/13, which I would always read as 11th October 2013 and I have gotten this wrong before.
The only solution I have is a label stuck on the phone to remind me.
This is only a minor irritation, but as I can't fix it, I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks
    JP

Unfortunately, I do not have a Firefox OS device, so this is based on an old screen shot I saw in a search...
During initial setup, you may have been asked to confirm your language and region. I believe the region is used to localize your date format. Can you find a setup app to get back to those choices? Please be advised that running a setup app may remove some data, so it's probably a good idea to wait for additional feedback before actually going forward with it.

  • WHICH ILLUSTRATOR VERSION FOR IMAC MAC OS X 10.5.8 LEOPARD?

    hi there,
    i have a question.
I am a proud owner of the new IMAC with leopard on it (currently 10.5.8) the current software i think.
Now i try to put Illustrator on it, well first of all i try to purchase it, which is the first stepping stone. Illu is sooo expensive!
which version would be the suitable first of all for my leopard and is there a cheaper way around???does anybody know?
i love illu and NEED IT!
    thanks for any advice!!

The other alternative, which I have advocated here and on other forums, is eBay.
Contrary to what others may say or think, most software for sale on eBay is legitimate, and the few who aren't are easily spotted. eBay takes a very aggressive stance on these things which makes software sales there such a vibrant and active market.
And like Wade said, you can then get on the Upgrade path. And Adobe is very good about transfers of registration to enable you to do this. This is something I have done for years and it keeps my costs down.
Follow these guides and you won't go wrong.
    1) Read this web page from Adobe: http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/antipiracy/avoid.html
    and follow it!
    2) You must, must, must use PayPal for all payments to cover yourself. And eBay has new protection also.
    3) If the seller doesn't specifically state anything about the software or if the seller doesn't specifically state anywhere if the software is registered or not, ask the seller that and also if they will transfer ownership. If you don't get an answer before the end of the auction, don't bid! There are more sellers who will answer you. And keep a record of your correspondence by checking the button to send a copy to your e-mail account.
    4) Look at how many sales the seller has done and the buyer responses and ratings. Very few or zero sales and 87% ratings are suspect.
    5) Look at any pictures. If the seller took the picture himself then you have more confidence that you will get what you see than a stock photo or no photo at all. All software shown should look like commercial products, silkscreen logos and imagery on mass produced discs and not cd-rs with labels stuck on (pirate sellers usually are too smart to do that). Look at several of these and familiarize yourself with what AI CS3 and CS4 look like in bare disc form from other auctions there.
    6) Use AuctionSniper to place bids at the last minute.
    7) Compare prices on the versions of Adobe Ilustrator you want (CS3 or CS4). Some sellers ask ridiculous amounts for older copies of Adobe software. You shouldn't have a problem here but you could get Illustrator version 8 and an upgrade to CS3 for a combined total the is less than a full retail CS3. It depends on the market. Since you don't have a large budget do your home work and study the closing prices for the versions you want.
Follow these guidlines and you will get the software you want at a price you can afford.

  • Hard disk error 3FO/No operating system?

HP Notebook Model:  HPG62 Notebook PC.   The system crashed while reading email in a secure, university based system.  When we tried to restart computer, it says  "Boot Device Not Found"  "Please install an operating system on your hard disk"  Hard Disk - (3FO).
The computer is 3 years old and came with Windows 7 Home Premium OA.  All of the numbers from the Windows 7 label stuck on the back on the Notebook have worn off.  We do not have any back up disks and cannot do a system restore because we cannot get to that screen.  How can we get Windows 7 back on this computer without having to purchase a whole new Operating System?  What are our options for fixing this computer on a really tight budget?  Thanks for any help you can offer

  • Alignment problems printing direct to DVD with Epson R220

I know this question isn't specifically related to iDVD but I wondered if someone could help please?
I recently bought an Epson R220 printer to print direct to DVDs created with iDVD as I know labels stuck onto DVDs are best avoided.
However, using both the bundled Epson Print CD software and 'disclabel', I find the print is about 1cm off centre. I'm really surprised by this, as I thought these machines would just work out of the box - detecting through the software where the centre of the DVD is? I've tried everything to remedy this (including the position adjustment within Print CD which allows up to 5mm fine-tuning). The problem is I need more than fine tuning - the print is way off!
I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has an R200 or R220 and might have had a similar problem as I've spoken to Windows users with the same printer, who report no such hassle.
    Many thanks,

Thanks Hardy - really appreciate the links to the Epson site. I've tried using the manual settings as you suggest, and I've certainly witnessed a vast improvement. Basically, it seems that if I alter the position adjustment slightly and then opt for a manual print, the disc is centred no problem. It isn't quite up to the edge of the disc - there's about a 2mm gap, using one of the templates from the Print CD app. Have you noticed this also - or does the image print right up tight against the edge of the disc?
If I go back and opt to just 'Print' from the first menu that appears after selecting File>Print, (i.e. not using Manual to print) the image is consistently about 15mm off centre - I've tried this on a dozen tests. However, using 'Manual Print' this isn't the case. I wonder if there is a glitch here in the latest edition of EPSON Print CD (V1.4), in that you seem unable to specify 'Page Set Up'?
I've also gone back to the excellent disclabel application. Here I find that if I change the 90% default under page set up, to 100%, the disc is also aligned correctly.
Thanks very much Hardy for taking the time to work through this one with me - much appreciated.

  • Compatible Camcorders for FCE HD

I'm buying a mini-DV camcorder to use with Final Cut Express HD 3.5 - the specs say that the Canon ZR700 is compatible - problem is I can't find that camera - seems to be outdated. I can however get the Canon ZR800 - I would assume that this camcorder is compatible but thought I'd check to see if I could get a definitive answer before I pop for the $300. to purchase.
Anyone have any experience with this? The "qualified devices" sheet seems a bit dated. Thoughts?

Get a Firewire connected external Hard Drive.
USB 2.0 ones are a bit cheaper BUT they can cause problems with video.
Regarding tapes, get the cheapest you can find from a reputable brand like Panasonic, Sony, JVC etc.
You can get "Professional" grade tapes for nearly twice as much but the difference is precisely NOTHING.
They are exactly the same as the cheap ones except when batches are tested, if the number of dropouts is lower than average, they MAY have a "Professional" label stuck on them.
The actual quality of the audio and video will be identical. As dropouts in ordinary tape are as rare as hens' teeth, it's hardly worth bothering about unless you are an extremely meticulous professional suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder.
Several years ago we were warned not to mix brands as the different tape lubricants MIGHT react and block the heads.
However, this no longer applies and in any case people like Sony don't make their own tapes and as they frequently change supplier, you are actually unwittingly swopping brands all the time!
    Ian.

  • Why can't lion read windows cd

I've recently had an MRI and spinal injections. The hospital provided a cd with the data and claimed that it doesn't work on the Mac since you need Internet Explorer to read the files. I was able to buy OsiriX from the App Store for free but had to jump through hoops to get the data on my mac since Lion thought that the CDs were blank. I tried on multiple Macs with Lion installed. I had to go to a Mac with Snow Leopard, create a sparse image file and copy the data from the CD (readable on Snow Leopard) onto the image file. I then put the image file on a portable hard drive so I could mount the image file on my Lion Mac. OsiriX recognizes that there is a medical record to read which it copies to it's database. Everything works great from then on. I'm guessing that most people would not be able to figure all that out and would give up.
Are you aware of this problem reading windows CDs using OSX Lion?

Yes I found this to be a problem too with MRI CDs conducted at the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Chester Maryland.  I also ended up using Snow Leopard, and copied the contents to a USB Flash drive to bring it over to my Lion Mac.  Joliet and UDF are common Windows burning formats that have varying levels of Mac OS X compatibility.    Macs also have difficult reading discs that were burnt at maximum speed, or have non-manufacturer labels stuck to them, or have sharpie written labels.  Discs that came off a spindle as opposed to stored in a jewelcase are more likely not to work as reliably.  If they just stuck to using ISO 9660 formats, burnt at minimum speed, and kept discs in jewelcases from Sony, Verbatim, Imation, or Kodak, this would not be a problem.

  • Infinity & Extension

    Hi,
Excuse me if this has been talked about before (I'm sure it has)
I am building an extension on the ground floor right side of the main house and want to use it as a cinema and TV room.
My Infinity modem and Home Hub are in my home office three floors up on the left side of the house.
I want to ensure the fastest speed possible is in the new room to stream movies etc., with wired and wireless broadband. I see two methods to achieve this?
    1. A Cat6 link from from the BT white modem(Lan2 port, currently not in use and a white label stuck over it) to a second router in the extension, possibly a TP-Link TD-W8970 or,
    2. A Cat6 cable from an 8 port Gigabit switch box in the office and a second daisy chained switcher in the extension.
Being not to knowledgeable in this area, which would work the best with the least amount of configuration.
Many thanks in advance for any pearls of wisdom
