CD ROM Drive has disappeared!!

I attempted to go through the steps posted here on how to get songs off your iPod back onto the music library on your PC (my laptop had crashed and I had to reload the operating software but didn't have a complete back-up of all my songs), and was unsuccessful. Now, in addition to that problem, my laptop is no longer reading the D: drive (CD ROM drive). It doesn't show up in Windows Explorer and when I put a CD in the drive it doesn't automatically start up as it did in the past. It's as if the D: drive no longer exists.
Anyone else encounter this problem and is there any fix other than reloading the operating software (which I just did and don't want to do again).
Thanks.

Just a quick link, don't know if it's the right thing:

  • My external drive has disappeared although i shows up in disc utility, and flash drives also do not appear. Any ideas? Have tried restarting but.....

My back-up has stopped as my external drive is shown as "not accessible" and has disappeared from Finder although it shows up in Disc Utility. Similarly my  USB flash drive has disappeared. Restarting does not help! Any ideas?

That's good news but maybe run a Repair Disk on it anyway given that it has been somewhat unpredictable.
With Time Machine, one expert helper here named pondini has an extensive knowledge of that software and has prepared a lot of material on it. Here is a link to some of it.

  • My external hard drive has disappeared

My external hard drive has disappeared from the 'open file' window in photoshop CS6. It's working fine and appears in other applications such as bridge and lightroom. How do I get it back? I'm running a Mac on OS X.

You may have accidentally dragged the drive out of the Devices list in the sidebar.
In a Finder window with visible sidebar, do Shift+Cmd+G to get the Go To Folder dialog. Enter
    /volumes
    then click OK.
You'll see all your mounted volumes in the Finder window. Drag the required one to the Devices list in the sidebar.

  • Second drive has disappeared!

I've just turned my mac on this morning and my second internal drive has disappeared! I don't know how else to explain it, it just isn't on my desktop like it usually is, and I can't find it anywhere. Any ideas anyone?

I'm having the same problem. When I run DU, it tells me:
    "Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Invalid node structure
    Invalid node structure
Catalog file entry not found for extent
The volume needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair"
I then try and repai it and it tells me:
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Invalid node structure
    Invalid node structure
Catalog file entry not found for extent
    Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
This happened to me before, but my minds not what it use to be.

  • Help!  Internal hard drive has disappeared

I just realized that one of my four internal hard drives is gone. I opened the machine and switched the bays and all was good except that drive did not show up and when I go to Apple System Profiler it shows that that bay is empty, nothing mounts. Can anyone Please Please help me give me some direction on what to do? I am literally freaking out and I try to be pretty calm and think things out. I have already reset the PRAM, done the SMU and have moved the drives to different bays which leads me to believe it is a hard drive failure. What can I do to or what software will help me mount this drive and find it. Dyin here. Sorry for the drama.

You have not changed anything about that hard drive in its Spotlight Comments, have you?
That can make it disappear from the Finder. However, you should be able to see it using Disk Utility.
You might also check to see if some of the contacts / pins in the rear of the drive have been bent or broken. If it does not show up in any slot / bay, that could be the problem.
If you have heard repetitive metallic clicks and / or scrapes, then the drive has probably crashed.

So HD/Library/Internet Plug Ins/ is empty, save for silverlight, and Home/Library/Internet Plug Ins/ is empty - and still you get the error in both Safari & Firefox, even in a new account ?
That's a puzzle - and since you've done all the microsoft suggestions & more, I'd have to suppose there's either a software conflict, not from a plugin, of course - or possibly some internet filtering/proxy connection issue. Assuming no issues on Netflix end, of course
Before any of that though - I re-read the thorough-sounding instructions you were given - it seems they didn't have you remove HD/Application Support/Microsoft/Silverlight (if it exists) and the same named folder within your Home library. Do this with browsers Quit.
Failing that - here's some ideas
    Regarding conflicting software...
Look at these folders for starters, in case there's anything that might affect the way silverlight works
    /Library/Input Methods/
    /Library/InputManagers/
    /Library/ScriptingAdditions
Have you any alternate internet connection to try - perhaps bypassing a router that might be blocking certain traffic ? You're not using a proxy>
Tested with the Firewall off in System Prefs-Security-Firewall (temporarily set it to allow all connections.
Quite possibly, the error would vanish with Silverlight 3, since 4 introduced some privacy improvements whereby it respected the 'private browsing' features of browsers, and disabled local storage. It's obviously mistakenly detecting that on your mac.
If nothing here helps - I suggest a post outlining all you've done at http://forums.silverlight.net/forums/13.aspx - they may well contact you directly & help out.

  • Firewire drive has disappeared

I want to start out by mentioning a problem earlier in the day, yesterday, before the FW drive in question disappeared, which may have everything, or nothing to do with the problem. I came home to the sound of my UPS warning me it was on battery power. However, power was on all over the house. It could have been a momentary drop, which happens here a lot during wind or rain, but usually when power does back, the UPS light reverts to green. Recently, I had a whole house generator installed, which does not kick in for ten seconds, so I was advised not to dump my UPS. I confirmed there had been at least a momentary lapse in power, since all my cable boxes had turned off, which only happens with a drop. I could not get the UPS to return to the power on position, but the light indicating a battery change was needed was not on. I changed the battery anyway, and the problem persisted, until all of a sudden, like magic, the unit returned to electric power.
I noticed later on that one of my firewire drives was not showing on the desktop. It is a 500 GB EZ Quest. The power light was on, and the other firewire drive, which is piggybacked into it, and has two partitions, had both partitions showing up on the desktop. I had a vague memory of the now absent drive not having used "Backup" that day, and the Backup program had been open on the desktop, "waiting". I had simply quit out of it.
Well, this EZ Quest, is in the wind. Disk Utility does not see it, Disk Warrior does not see it; it is not simply a matter of not showing it is unmounted. I turned it off and on, I unplugged it, I disconnected the firewire, and tried using USB, and nothing. I tried shutting down, and restarting, I plugged it in elsewhere, instead of into the UPS, which should not have made a difference, since it is on, blue light and all. I can hear it power up after I turn it off, and on, but it is totally invisible.
I was one of the people who had slight firewire issues after upgrading to Lion, but my problem was not one of a drive not mounting, but rather one partition on my other FW drive opening with an empty window. I had posted about it some time ago. Info showed there was info on the drive, and Super Duper kept backing up to it, faithfully, but all I would see most of the time was an empty window, which would fill up again on a restart. It would occasionally show an empty window again, but not all the time. The other partition of that drive, which is a one TB OWC, was never a problem. This particular EZ Quest had always mounted, and behaved.
Is there anything else I should try? Is it possible there was a glitch when the power dropped momentarily? Should I simply trash it, and buy a new drive?

Try resetting the SMC, that may be all that's needed. The instructions for Intel based iMacs are:
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • DVD Drive has disappeared

Why has my DVD drive disappeared from the list of available drives in Photoshop Elements? How do I get PE to pick it up again?

Please try doing the same after restarting the system. If it still doesn't recognize it, check Folder Tree in left panel of the Organizer. The tree I'm referring to is the complete folder structure which becomes visible on clicking the small icon next to My Folders.
    Thanks

  • My Hard Drive has disappeared!

I wonder if anyone can help me with a problem I'm having please. The icon for my main hard drive (start up disk) has gone from my desktop and is no longer displayed in finder. This also coincides with a noticeable drop in performance shown particularly when running Logic pro 7.2 which seems to struggle when only doing relatively modest processing.
I thought it was a problem with the hard drive and after doing a repair and then full wipe and OS install (which made no difference) I then bought a brand new hard drive and installed OS 10.4 and then all the updates. This fixed the problem for about a week but then the same happened - the icon disappeared from desktop and finder.
I have reset the PMU and have tried to reset the PRAM but this seems not to work and the machine ends up booting up in safe mode.
    Any ideas anyone?

What disk drive were you using? what did you buy?
Not all drives work as well or compatible (most do though).
    I'd be buying 500GB drives.
Where is your backup? Do you use SuperDuper, CloneX or something that makes bootable backups?
When you repaired your drive, was that from disk drive; from DVD; other?
Do you have Disk Warrior 4 to use?
Sometimes bad memory causes disk drive problems and corruption.
After resetting pram/nvram/pmu you have to reset the startup disk. That will not cause it to boot in Safe Mode.
Do you use Applejack to repair your boot drive? tried using /sbin/fsck -fy in Single User Mode command?
If I get a new drive or think a drive is having trouble, first thing I do is zero the drive.
Was your boot drive half full? 3/4?
Try keeping the boot drive under 50% and keep data on another drive, and 3-4th for scratch and editing to help performance.

  • External Hard drive has disappeared from fcpx

    Hey guys,
I know this question comes up a lot so I'm suprised to say I've failed to find any fixes on other threads. Many people having the same issue say that the drive shows up temporarily in the events and project source windows but then disapear, this is not the case for me it just doesn't show up at all. I've put 90% of my fcp projects and events onto one external hard drive which is working fine with everything but fcp, it even recognises it if i want to import from the drive. It has been working fine up until now which is weird as I've not changed anything on it recently, the only thing I've changed is I used a client's drive to do the latest edit, which worked fine!
Someone must have found a solution to this problem by now, it's causing me a lot of trouble as I've got deadlines to meet and I'm being put out by what seems to be a ridiculous little bug, surely apple would have got onto a fix for this by now?? In the mean time all and any suggestions welcome!

Have you used it successfully with FCP X before? What content has changed in the drive?
I am assuming you checked all the usual things, but still it is worth taking a look again:
    1) Is it formatted as Mac OS extended?
    2) Did you add any folder titled something that may be thought of as a camera (folders like "AVCHD", "Private", "DCIM", "Video", ....)
    3) Are the folders called exactly "Final Cut Events" and "Final Cut Projects" and located at the ROOT of the drive?
It seems like you know all this, but still there may have been something you missed.

  • Cd/dvd drive has disappeared

my cd/dvd drive is not detected by windows, but is detected by the device manager
the BIOS detects is as well. I've tried removing the upper & lower filters, uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, and have also checked to see if I can assign the drive a letter. the drive isn't even there
i have had this problem for a while. first i had fixed it, but then after doing a system recovery, it has disappeard once again. I've tried all of the microsoft fix its, and it all does not work.
However, it did work before I did the system recovery, so I do not believe it is a hardware issue. The cd drive also has a blinking light and spins, but windows does nothing.
    please help!!!

  • Hard Drive has disappeared

I came home today and booted up my six day old iMac and the grey screen appeared and then a folder with a question mark appeared blinking. I got on my old macbook (which I'm using right now) and looked up so scenarios as to what to do. I was told to resest the PRAM. I did this. Nothing changed. I instered my OSX Installation Disk and went to Disk Utility to repaird it but  it didn't show up, only the CD/DVD drive appeared in Disk Utility. I tried to restore using a backup (it was last fully backed up this morning at 10am) but when it asked me on which hard drive I wanted to install the backup it only gave me the option of my WD External Hard Drive. When I tried to just reinstall windows period, after unplugging the external hard drive, it asked me the same question but this time didn't offer me any hard drive?  Is my Hard Drive Fried? It's only 6 days old?! I haven't done anything to fry the hard drive or anything. After being with mac for 6+ years this is the first time I've ever had hardware/software issues. Anyone else experience this? I don't have a car and it really isn't that easy for me to get to a Mac Store. What should I do?

It seems like the HD has failed. Call AppleCare immediately the number is in your owners manual. If you purchased your machine directly from Apple you can request a return and exchange. If you bought it from a dealer you would need to work within the dealer's return policies.

  • Network drive has disappeared !

To be honest this a probably NOT a Mac question as I'm sure the fault lies in the network drive, however I know there are some brainy guys and gals out there who almost certainly know the answer to this problem, so here goes:
I have a LaCie 2Big network drive that is connected to our wireless router via Ethernet. It is a RAID drive and is set up so one drive is mirrored on the other to ensure my data is safe.
For two or three years it has ticked along very nicely, no real problems.
Last week the unit was turned off for a period of four days whilst we were away and since then it will not remount.
Not recognised by either of the computers on the network
The physical status of the LaCie 2big drive is as follows:
The Blue light on the front remains flashing at approx one per second - it should be a solid blue.
The disc lights at the back are both solid blue (the sytem is set to safe100) indicating they are OK
The light on the ethernet socket occasionally twinkles.
If I move the power switch to off: the front blue light increases the speed of its flashing very slightly but the unit does not power down.
So I disconnected the drive from the network router and reconnected it directly to an iMac via the Ethernet cable.
Still the drive will not appear.
Naturally I contacted LaCie support and told them of my problems and their solution rather shook me (and let this be a warning to you all)
    I should re-initiallise the drive.
This of course involves wiping all the data from the two disc drives !
    Has someone gone mad ?
The data is the valuable thing here - that's why I invested in a RAID system for the network drive.
That's why I've always used that drive for all my most valuable data.
So my question to the knowledgeable Apple community is - In your experience is it possible to get the data off a failed RAID system given that it is only the unit that seems to have failed and not the discs themselves ?
The discs in the unit are individually removeable, I presume it is not simply a question of sticking them in another case and connecting it to a computer ?
    Or perhaps it is ??
Informed guidance welcomed - thanks everyone.

    Well finally the sad news.
The LaCie Raid network drive I bought to protect my valuable data had just died.
As it transpires, the discs were OK (But formatted in Linux) but the enclosure which held the drives and has it's own software, that had failed.
The complete unit had to be sent to France for data recovery.
Four hundred pounds GBP - not bad in data recovery terms I guess.
But all my files came back in a mess and I certainly lost some stuff.
    So the warning is:
Even a RAID drive will not protect your data.
I am now backing up really important stuff to the Cloud as well as my new network drive.

  • Formerly accessible shared drive has disappeared??

OK, so I ejected it accidentally but havne't been able to reFind it...
I have an external hard drive connected to my Mac Mini that I was accessing via Sharing with my laptop.  It worked fine.  I had both read/write permissions and had accessed stuff on it, as well as writing to it.  No problems.
Then sometime last week I clicked the eject button and it disappeared.  The problem is, I can't find it anymore.  It's gone.
I've tried restarting both computers.  Removing the drive from my Shared folder at the Mini and then re-adding it.  I've tried adding new users... Nothing.  On the Mini's side, everything is set right, but my laptop still doesn't see it.  My other Shared folders are still there...  What am I missing?
(On a different, yet related note:  Why can't I do a basic Finder search on my Shared folders?)

Have you tried shutting down the drive, letting it sit for a couple of minutes, and then restarting it?
    Bingo.
Now I feel stupid.   Always the first step with any tech support: shut it off and turn it back on.  I did that with both computers, but never even thought about the drive.
    Thanks Eric!

  • External Hard Drive has "Disappeared"

I have a Maxtor One Touch II External drive conected through a Firewire 800 cable which I use for Time Machine. The drive got switched off a couple of weeks ago, but when I switched it back on it would not mount. The drive sounds like it is running normally.
Having searched the boards, I've tried the following:
    OS X Software update (I'm on 10.6.8)
    SMC reset
    PRAM reset
    Disk permissions repair
    Disk repair (from install disk)
    Creating a new user account
    Connecting the drive via USB
    Onyx and Cocktail scripts
When I run Profiler the drive shows up under Firewire Bus as "unknown device", the details are:
    GUID 0x0
Maximum speed: up to 400 Mb/sec
    Connection speed: unknown
When I enter "diskutil list" in Terminal I get the following:
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *500.1 GB   disk0
       1:                        EFI                         209.7 MB   disk0s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS Macintosh HD            499.8 GB   disk0s2
Any more suggestions? Or is my drive ready for the recycling bin?
    Thanks, Noel

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work! (I'm assuming the One Touch is FireWire; some of this works for USB too)
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours is the 10.3.9 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
    Good Luck!
    Cheers!
