Hello, @jcrev
Welcome to the HP Forums.
It appears that the notebook isn't seeing the CD/DVD driver correctly. I will attempt to assist you with this issue.
As you've completed the Windows document with no results, I cannot guarantee this will help, but recommend reading it over to see if anything differs: CD/DVD Drive Is Not Detected (Windows 8).
If nothing differs or the document does not resolve the issue, then you may want to contact phone support for repair/replacement options.
Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region. http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-phone-assist.html

After recently installing itunes on my new PC running windows 8, the CD/DVD drives no longer works, gives a code 19 message. Seems itunes is impacting the registry of the DVD drive. What is best solution to keep running itunes normally in the future & get the CD/DVD drive working again? if I delete the upper / lower registry keys what other functions are impacted? I see others say itunes asks for a reinstall...then same problem all over again! THX

  • After installing Quicktime CD-ROM/DVD drive doesn't work.

We use Quicktime to view files created by agencies. After installing Quicktime 7.1 the CD-ROM/DVD drive on the IBM thinkpad no longer works.
error - This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)
The only way to resolve this issue is to edit the registry and remove the Upper and Lower filters.
Why does this happen? Can you please let me know if this will be amended soon, and is there a way of installing the software to stop this from happening?
    IBM Thinkpad   Windows 2000

Last night I had the same problem. Tried to upgrade and got the version with Itunes to see what it was. After reboot, Both physical drives and a vertual drive now have the yellow mark. This program should not have touched device drivers. Uninstalled both quicktime and Itunes and rebooted. Same thing. Reinstalled Quicktime. Same thing. Ran reg mechanic. it said 2 dlls where missing:
    PxSFS.DLL
    pxwma.dll
These don't seem to be device drivers, so should not have had an effect, but I replaced them which made reg mechanic happy. Problem is still there.
In Event viewer for application I now have this error at each reboot:
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( IDriverT ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event: Service started.
For System Event I have this at each reboot because the cdroms are disabled:
The Cdralw2k service failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.
Looking through this thread it looks like just other users replying. Where is Apple? they created this mess.

Don't know how long ago this problem started, but whenever a cd or dvd is in the drive, the light flashes on and off. If you double click on the dvd drive in windows explorer, it takes a long time trying to read it, then says no dvd/cd in drive. Anyone else have this problem?

  • Playing movies on external DVD drive no longer works

I am no longer able to watch movies from an external dvd drive with my 2011 MacBook Pro. I'm using VLC.
The external dvd drive worked correctly until recently. Still works on another (Windows-based) machine. The DVD spins up, idles, but does not play. I've un-installed and re-installed VLC. No error messages given.
I'm fairly new to Macs. Is there something I can reset to get this working? I don't understand why this would just stop working on this one machine.

With the External HD still disconnected Restart the iMac and then re-connect the External HD.
Optionally if you have already reconnected the External HD, open Disk Utility and see if you can select and re-mount it using the blue Mount button.

  • LaCie external DVD drive no longer working

I recently upgraded the firmware on my LaCie DVD +/-RW burner so it would work reliably with a G5 running Tiger. It worked fine with that machine for several months. Unfortunately, it no longer works on my G5 that's running 10.3.9. I've downloaded and installed the latest updates from LaCie to no avail. The blue power light comes on but that's it. The tray only opens with a paperclip, and disks don't spin up. Any suggestions?

Hey, I would first try to take out the drive and "clean" the contacts on the drive to ensure it's connected. I'm pretty sure you can find videos/guides on how to take out the drive (shouldn't be too hard), there should probably be few screws that you would need to take out and then simply pull out the drive. If it's still not recognized, you can probably order the same model drive from amazon/ebay. All you would have to do is to simply put in the new drive in.

  • DVD Drive no longer working

Hi there, I tried getting help with this issue a few months ago, but no luck. So I'm trying again in hopes of a response. My laptop is a Satelite L655-S5058 (2 years old now) and the internal DVD drive stopped working. It would appear in "My Computer" as a generic CD drive, but I'd be able to get it back to normal by doing a shut-down and restart. Then it stopped working altogether. It won't even eject unless I stick a paper clip in the slot to force an eject. I've not only tried deleting the drive from "Device Manager" in the hopes that it would auto-reinstall correctly, but I've even tried a complete system recovery. No change. Is there anything else I can try? If not and the drive needs to be replaced, can someone point me in the right direction about how to order a replacement and self install? Thank you in advance for any input.

  • GB's Disappearing and DVD drive no longer works

I am having a problem after installing Leopard. I installed it and it worked perfectly for a day. I did nothing more than create a few word documents and my storage on my internal hard drive fell from 36 gb left to 18.6 gb left. I restarted my Mac Book Pro and I am now showing 23.45 gb, so I magically got some of the space back, but not all of it. I have tried deleting things off my hard drive and they show a difference in the gb count, but then go back around 23 no matter how much I delete. I checked to make sure time machine wasn't backing up on my local drive and it isn't. I have checked the disk using the disk utility. I have check for viruses using Symantec. Any ideas. Also my DVD player when you insert a DVD just spits it out. Not sure what to do about that either - any help would be much appreciated.

  • What can I do if my CD or DVD drive doesn't work properly in Windows 8?

QuestionWhat can I do when if my laptop CD or DVD drive doesn't work properly in Windows 8?
AnswerNote: For help with this issue in Windows 7, please see this article.
To get your CD or DVD drive working correctly, try these suggestions in the order listed.
    Reinstall the Driver
Hold the Windows key and press the 'x' key to open a menu in the lower-left. In this menu, select "Device Manager." Expand "DVD/CD-ROM drives." Right-click the entry for the CD/DVD drive nested under "DVD/CD-ROM drives," then select "Uninstall." Finally, restart the computer. The computer will reinstall the drivers for the drive.
    Power Cycle
Even when your laptop is off and unplugged, residual power can still be held in some components. While this is normal, clearing it can help with some hardware problems. Perform these steps to complete what’s called a power cycle.
Ensure the laptop is turned off.
Unplug the laptop's AC power cable.
Unplug all wires and peripherals. This includes CDs, DVDs, USB sticks, mice, printers, and any other accessories.
Remove the battery (if the model has a removable battery). If the model does not have a removable battery, check your user's guide to determine if you have a pinhole reset on the bottom. If you do, press this.
Hold down the power button for thirty seconds.
    Reattach the battery if removed.
Connect the AC adaptor to the power socket that was confirmed to be working in the first step.
Connect the other end of the AC adaptor to your computer.
Start the computer and test the drive
    Microsoft Fix-it

The media in your CD or DVD drive cannot be read
The media cannot be written to a CD or DVD inserted into the drive
You receive an error message about your CD or DVD drive
If any of these symptoms apply to your computer, use Microsoft Fix-it troubleshooter available here.
    System Restore
Try using System Restore to restore to the most restore point from before the problem arose.

    System Recovery
If the System Restore doesn't solve the issue, you could try a System Reset. Resetting your laptop to its original, out-of-the-box state is a great way to eliminate software as a possible cause of the problem. Note that doing a system reset will return the laptop to its default conditions, completely wiping your data. Information on how to perform a system recovery can be found in your user's guide.
For more information on performing a recovery, see the following article:

    Contact Customer Support
If the drive doesn't work after performing a recovery, it may be due to hardware failure. Please call customer support or seek servicing.

A reply to similar question (Q & As , in product page Apple Store) says:
"...dissable the internal reader hardware from devices setup. Then plug the external usb superdrive and that's it."  Answered by Enrique T from Lima Oct  25 2013.
If you can locate an external Apple USB 'Air" superdrive for earlier model MacBook Air, that should work. The newer one for the Air is the same as for iMac, now.
You may be able to use other brands of external USB optical drive with your older intel-based iMac, as some of them function capably. A few should also be able to see system discs or other bootable utilities on DVD.
    Hopefully this helps.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Installed itunes 6 and now CD/DVD drive won't work at all

I just bought a new ipod and installed the software and now my CD/DVD drive won't work at all. Here is my info: Could someone please help!!!
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
    Dell Computer Corporation Inspiron 5160
    iTunes 6.0.4.2
    CD Driver 2.0.4.3
    CD Driver DLL 2.0.3.2
    LowerFilters: ASAPIW2K (6.0.2.0),
    UpperFilters: GEARAspiWDM (2.0.4.3),
Video Driver: NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 \GeForce FX Go5200

SCSI\CdRomROXIO__DVD-ROM_EMULATOR___, Bus Type SCSI, Bus Address [0,0]
If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.
Some computers need an update to the ATA or IDE bus driver, or Intel chipset. If iTunes has problems recognizing CDs or hanging or crashing while importing or burning CDs, check the support site for the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard.
    Current user is administrator.
    D: SONY DVD+-RW DW-D56A, Rev PDS7
    Drive is empty.
    E: ROXIO DVD-ROM EMULATOR, Rev
    Drive is empty.
If anyone has a solution for this stupid problem that would be great.
    Thanks

Yes, I suspect that it's the virtual drive emulator software you have there. I know nothing about that software and it doesn't look like the Roxio support page even mentions it, so it's probably software old enough that they're not supporting it anymore.
To uninstall any software, I would start with the "Add and Remove Programs" Control Panel. Uninstall it there, and then use the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility —
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301
Download and install that. Run it and find the drive emulator software on the list and remove it there. And reboot and see if that has successfully removed it.
There is a work around that if we just remove the iTunes CD driver, you'll probably get your drive back, but you'll only be able to rip CDs, you won't be able to burn them without the iTunes CD driver installed. You do have some Pinnacle CD burning software installed. Are you currently using that or is that leftover cruft as well?

  • DVD drive won't work after Mavericks upgrade

I upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard, and ever since, my CD/DVD drive will not work.  Discs spin, but then they are ejected.  Doesn't matter what type of disc I put in.
The drive was working fine before I upgraded.  I have reset the SMC and the NVRAM/PRAM, but the drive still isn't working.
Any suggestions for what else I can try?

Others here wouldnt recommend it, but on a new OS install, since I have a giant pile of HD, ...i just grab another HD and create a new fresh Time Machine backup
after its complete, I take the original HD with the OLD backup and format/erase it.
Im a tad too lazy to wait, as you yourself mentioned,  1 hour for TM just to PREPARE to backup. Nope, no,...not gonna do it.
I updated 4 Macs to Mavericks and id rather make a wholly NEW Time Machine backup on another HD and erase the original.
Since I keep about 12+ redundant archives of my important data, I have no worry on earth of ever losing data.
Time machine is a backup, NOT an archive for vital data.
Methodology to protect your data. Backups vs. Archives. Long-term data protection
