CD Rom Problems

I having problems in detecting the cdROM in my Solaris 9. When I issuing the command iostat, it show no statistic on my cdROM, it just showing the HDD and others.
<<Question 1>> What actually happened? The cdROM is not detected/cdROM defected or it is not mounted yet?
<<Question 2>> What is the result from command iostat if the cdROM is actually detected?
Example output reflect to the question 2:
Quote:
$ iostat -xtc 5 2

  • G3 Pismo DVD-ROM Problem

The DVD-ROM (Model M7931, Apple P/N 661-2244) in my G3 Pismo is not working properly. When a CD or DVD is input the drive spins, but makes slow & fast spin speed noises. Then it quits without reading the CD or DVD. The lens is clean & the drive appears in the System Profiler. When I replace the DVD-ROM drive with a CD-ROM drive (M73888), the CD drive reads a CD, so apparently the electronics within the G3 are OK.
I've read in forums that these drive have been problematic. Has anyone attempted a repair of the drive or know what might be the problem? The Service Manual troubleshooting doesn't suggest much, except replace. Since the drive is inop & possibly need to be trashed, I'm not adverse to trying to disassemble & attempt a repair. I can continue to use the CD-ROM drive.
I doubt that I will replace the DVD-ROM because used ones appear to cost $50+ & new ones about $100+. Is there an alternate (cheaper $) PC drive that could be used?

It's fixed. WD40 to the rescue.
I was considering swapping the Apple drive with a PC drive (see first link below, Plan B), but thought I would do a little troubleshooting (Plan A).
I opened the drive tray from it's enclosure. Using a #0 jeweler's Phillips screwdriver, I removed the metal cover plate screws (5). Then removed the screws (3) holding the motor/plate assembly. Carefully lifted the motor assembly upward at about a 45 degree angle (flex cables were attached). Looking at the side, there was about a 1mm gap between the motor & the plate. Using the plastic nozzle on a can of WD40, sprayed a small amount of lubricant. Let it sit for a few minutes & rotated the spindle. Reassembled everything.
I inserted a CD, didn't hear any spinning noise & the CD icon appeared on the screen. Repeated with a DVD. Both were being read. Yea!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you use cable between CD-ROM dri've and sound card, disable the "Enable Digital Output ...." setting on Device Manager --> DVD/CD-ROM dri'ves --> your dri've name --> Properties --> Properties -tab. If not using cable, then try with cable instead (disable this setting then).
Check if DMA transfer is activated for CD-ROM dri've(s) (try if enabling/disabling it makes any difference).
Disable the Creative CD-ROM detector (service).

  • Dvd Rom Problem

    Hi,
I have a Ibm Thinkpad T23 Series Laptop where I bought from Canada last year. When I was in Canada I am able to access any of the CDs/Dvds through my Thinkpad's  Dvd rom. My Dvd Rom would be  TOSHIBA - DVD 8X MODEL NO : SD-C2512.

When I tried to access any of the Indian Movies or softwares which is available with me that  I am not able to access. I believe there is no problem in my Dvd Rom and I am not able to understand what might be the problem.  Appreciate if any one could advice.

  • Curve 9300 connecting to boot rom problem

Hi everyone, I have a curve 9300 and I tried to install an update to the OS. The problem is when i get to the part that says "connecting to the boot rom" the phone starts rebooting and goes like this 3 or 4 times, resulting on a failed update. I already have tried to use another USB port, another computer, connect the blackberry to the pc with the battery pulled, tried another usb cord, all of which failed. Can anyone help me solving this?

Hello Edi27 and welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
Sorry to hear you are experiencing an issue installing your device software.
Did this error come up after the update installed or during the update?
Does the device display any error on the screen or just the BlackBerry start up logo?
Have you tried to reboot your device in Safe Mode as shown in KB17877?
    Thanks!

  • More CD-ROM Problems

Alright, This is great, how many more problems could this computer possibly have?
My CD Rom drive is messed up now. About a week ago, it decided it didn't want to burn a CD with more then 6 songs on it via iTunes. I called Apple Care, we deleted Caches, Pref files, Archive Install, and maybe something else. Problem was temporary solved. I tried to burn a CD again today, it fit the requirements and everything. It gives me (somethign along the lines of) this error:
"The Burning failed because the write speed is too fast for the disc drive or the media, try lowering the speed"
I have. I've gone down to 2x, and up to 16x or whatever it says, and Maximum Possible. In this past week I've wasted about 15 or so CD's. They are Memorex 52x CD-R's. I've been using them forever, and up until now I've never had a problem. I've even tried burning on some Target brand cd's and got the same result.
I can do a "drag and drop" burn on the desktop, but that doesn't really help me because I want an audio CD.
I was just able to burn a 6 song CD, but not a 15 song CD.
Someone help me, I'm about to shove a screwdriver through this computer.

    Hi there,
I have used Memorex brand only once, it burned 'successfully' but would not pplay on a CD player, however, it did play on a PC with iTunes... so I stopped using Memorex and switched to TDK's and haven't been disappointed...

  • Ibook reading, writing, importing into itunes - CD ROM problems

I have a 14" ibook G4 with a CD burner. It used to work fine. Now the CD-ROM had not been working properly. A numbe of thing have been happening, consistantly.
With itunes, when I import a disc, it imports with a weird cracking/snapping sound in the background (kind of like an old record) when I play the song back. This is a mojor bummer when trying to import songs onto my ipod from my CD collection.
With disc's that people burn for me (such as wedding photo's) no matter what the format is, whether it be a psd, gif, jpeg it does not open the file correctly, I can't open it in preview, photoshop....nothing.
When I open in photoshop it says, "Can not complete request because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found."
When I try to open in preview it says, "Couldn't open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn't recognize."
I know it's not a problem with the actual files because I have been having friends take the files from the CD's and putting them on a usb drive for me (from which I can retrieve the pictures just fine.)
When I try to play a DVD , the movie skips a lot and then freezes.
I have run a disk utility repair with no success.
    Please, any suggestions?

  • Embedding Real Media off a DVD-ROM -- problems in Safari

Safari won't play embedded Real Media files off of a DVD-ROM. Description:
I'm trying to embed Real Media files in web pages distributed on a DVD-ROM. It works fine in Firefox (and in Windows), but in Safari, it doesn't work. It takes a long time for the embedded video to even start playing in Safari (about 2 minutes), and then it consistently crashes Safari less than a minute after that. Sometimes it doesn't play at all, but after a few minutes shows a "resource unavailable" error in the Activity window instead. It works perfectly if the files are on the hard drive, or if I'm streaming them over the Internet through Helix Server, but they just won't work when they're embedded off of the DVD-ROM through Safari.
I've tried several Intel and PowerPC machines, all running the latest OS and RealPlayer versions, but I can't get it to work anywhere. I thought it could be disc or drive speed issues, but like I said, even Firefox on these same Macs plays the embedded video with no problems, and of course RealPlayer can open them directly off the disc just fine too. Safari seems to be standing in the way of my universal browser compatibility!
I've contacted Real about this too, but I haven't received a response. Any ideas? Thanks -- Jim

Also, for the embedded Real Media code, I'm essentially just using the code generated here:
    http://cit.ucsf.edu/embedmedia/step1.php
(I can't imagine this matters much, since it works in all other browsers and all other instances other than Safari accessing the DVD-ROM)

  • Hp paviion dv 6915nr sound, network, CD-ROM problems

I had problems with sound, network, CD-ROM 3 month ago. Sometimes it worked all together, sometimes not. I mean problems were everytime together. No sound, no network (exept wireless), no CD-ROM. Now it doesnt work constantly. Other parts of my Laptop work correct (HDD, CPU, Camera, Wireless network, Video).
P.S. 1) CD-ROM missing from Device Manager. When I insert a CD or DVD, it tries to read the disc, but nothing happens.
            2) Missing Audio device (so i cant install driver)
            3) Network device is ok, but it couldnt connect to internet...
Whats wrong? Why it doesnt work exactly all togeher?
    Thanks.
OS Windows Vista Home Premium. Many times reinstalled. No sense.

I did miss the comment about swapping with a known working CD/DVD drive.  Sorry!
I'm not sure that this is a driver issue, as the CD/DVD drive should at least recognize that there is a disc in the drive.  I've made no software changes, checked registry filters, and even uninstalled/reinstalled iTunes betting that the issue was software related.  No joy.  If yours is like mine, it returns a "unsupported media" error message (although mine is a CD media recognition issue).  I saw where someone advised to uninstall the controller entry under the IDE ATA/ATAPI section in Device Manager, reboot, and scan for new hardware.  Still no joy for me.
I'm currently looking to do a hardware replacement, and was thinking about upgrading to a Blu-ray drive.  Still looking for solutions before having to replace, but everything that I see points to a hardware issue.  Still looking though.

  • P10: DVD / DVD-ROM Problems

    Hi guys!
Hope you can help, probably something stupid I have overlooked. I Have the P10 series with a Combo DVD-ROM type SD-R2412. I've recently put a fresh install of the op system on (XP) using the system restore disks. Since, my cd drive reads normal cd's and DVD films but not DVD ROMS such a games on DVD-ROM. Any ideas? Windows XP sees it as a DVD/CD-ROM drive but that's about it.
Thanks in advance for any help

    Hi
I am not sure but I think that your unit has a DVD-RAM drive. I have the same drive in my Satellite and everything works perfect. I can really dont understand how something like that possible is especially after OS reinstallation with Recovery CD.
I dont know if you use the original games from store or some self burned. Try to use many different DVD medias to find out which one makes problem.

I have never seem this error so I'm trying to pinpoint were exactly the problem could be. I'm suspecting you might have had problems on your previous upgrade or you installed a corrupt application? • HT4530 CD-Rom Problem.

i am a macbook pro (10.5.8.) user since 2009.One day, i have got a problem to a cd-rom suddenly. since i have never used vaccine or cleaning stuff for mac before, i guess it has infacted virus or something.(just guessing) how am i shoot this problem? is it a matter of software or hardware? sorry, i just bought this to not thinking about virus but now i am trapped.. help ~!!

There has never been any Mac malware that made the optical drive stop working, and Macs don't need "cleaning" (see The myth of the dirty Mac).
I'm unclear on whether the problem is with one particular CD or if the drive itself has stopped working. If the latter, that happens. Optical drives are prone to failure. You will probably want to get it checked out by Apple if you need to have the functionality of an optical drive. (Personally, I would encourage you to work on moving away from optical media.)
If it's a problem with one specific disc, there's just a problem with that disc. If it is a home-burned CD-R or CD-RW, those have a limited shelf life and don't last forever. A factory-burned CD-ROM will last quite a long time, as long as it isn't physically damaged.

  • DVD-ROM problem reloaded

HI everybody. I have posted this issue before, but got no solution for it. So, I'm trying again.
Whenever I insert a CD into my DVD-ROM drive the system gets locked. The drive's light lights up a few times, but everything gets locked, including the mouse pointer. Then after a few minutes the mouse pointer is released and the system can be used again. The DVD-ROM drive, however, is never accessed at all.
When the above useless processing is finished the mouse pointer is released, and I can use the system - as long as I don't try to access the DVD-ROM drive again. If I do try to access the drive, everything gets locked up again as explained in the above paragraph.
Would you guys be able to help me figure this out?

    ttreaders:

    G_man:
Thanks for your "moral" support. Your description of the problem is excellent. It seems exactly the same as mine.  This drive is a Samsung SD-616B 16x DVD-ROM that came with my Dell 8200 system. I took it out of the Dell system and installed in the new one. The FW version is F006. I bought this Dell 8200 in November 2001. I wouldn't think it's an old drive though. Regarding round cables, I do have them, so I might try using flat ones sometime in the near future, and see if it works better. Also, please see my reply to archermoo below.
    Archermoo:
I have disabled UDMA mode in Bios and driver, and ... IT WORKS!!! Alleluiah. The system can access the drive and is not hanging any more. .
Now, my question to you guys is: what am I missing by changing the DVD-ROM drive's access mode to PIO?
