CD-RW rejected by MBP

My MBpro 2.33GHz won't accept CD-RW media and ejects them emediatly. The strange thing is that other media like CD-R, DVD-R and DVD-RW are no problem.

Kappy, Thanks for the helpful reply.
I tried Data Rescue II, but the demo download could not find anything on the CD-RW, not even the recently added small file, which I have accesssed to prove it is there!
FileSalvage requires OS X 10.3 on which will not work with my 10.2.8.
Looks like I just have to say goodbye to that data and regard it as a learning event. It does show the disadvantages of CD-RW.
If I had been using ordinary CD I would still have the data.
Thanks for your ideas.

  • OS X Reinstall DVD rejected by MBP Core Duo

I am attempting to reinstall Mac OS X on my 15.4" MBP Core Duo. When I install the 1st disk while the OS is up, the system will eject the DVD after about 1 minute. It does recognize the 2nd disk, but not the first disk. There are no blemishes on the disk, it has been used once before. I have noticed that the DVD player on my MBP will randomly not recognize movie DVD's, and eject them after they are put in. These movie DVD's are original/new out of the box, and work in any other system.
Is there a firmware issue, or a known issue with the super dvd players in the 15.4" Mac Book Pro's?
I apologize ahead of time if this is addressed elsewhere, I looked for a few hours and didnt find what I was looking for.

Firstly, try resetting PRAM and NVRAM…

… as doing this has at times ben known to resolve SuperDrive issues. Beyond that though, I'd try contacting AppleCare which may however be difficult from Afghanistan.

  • Can no longer send emails from Mail on iMac but CAN on MBP

Initially, when Mobile Me ended, my email was changed to work with iCloud and it worked fine for about seven months or so.  Then, it started giving me an error message (on my iMac, my Macbook Pro, and my iPhone) that said it rejected my password. After a long phone call with Apple, they said that the iCloud server was having problems with certain accounts.  They seemed to have fixed it and the mail started working again.
Then it stopped sending email BUT ONLY on my iMac (message says that stmp rejects my password).  I have the exact same settings (and password) on my Macbook Pro and the iCloud/Mac/Me mail is received and sent without trouble.  I have Snow Leopard on both computers and the same version of Mail on both computers. My Thunderbird email client receives and sends my iCloud/Mac/Me email on my iMac without a problem.  Apple Mail receives and sends my other email addresses (gmail, hover) without a problem.  Gmail is set to POP and Hover is set to IMAP.
    What I have tried:
    1) I have deleted the iCloud mail account and re-created it using instructions from Apple Support online as well as Mac users on the forums.  (I am not an IT expert, but I can follow instructions.)
    2) I have removed all saved iCloud/Mobile Me passwords from my keychain (both incoming and outgoing) in case there was an old one stored there.
    3) I have created a new IMAP account.  I have created a new Mobile Me IMAP account. I am not given the option in Snow Leopard of creating a new iCloud account -- but as I said the iCloud account (called Mobile Me IMAP) is WORKING on my Macbook Pro.
If I were having the problem with the Macbook Pro rather than the iMac, I'd just go to the Genius Bar and let them handle it.  But, if I can do it without packing up and carrying my desktop, that would be preferable.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi Lanny,
Thank you for this.  I followed it "to the letter".  In fact, I tried it twice to make sure I didn't miss any steps. Both times, everything went as described until STMP.  When I got to the STMP page and hit "create", it once again told me that the STMP server name and/or password were "incorrect".  My iCloud mail arrives fine, but nothing can go out because the outgoing mail does not recognize my password (or at least that seems to be what is happening.) I tried to give up and set Thunderbird up as my default mail client, but iPhoto doesn't recognize it and when I want to email a photo, it opens Apple Mail. I just do not understand why it works on my MBP and not on my iMac. Nothing was changed on either computer.  It simply stopped sending outgoing mail on the iMac and continues to send out on the MBP.
    It's a mystery.

  • TS1440 I'm trying to fix the "Blinking Grey Folder" issue, but for some reason my MBP won't accept my internet password, how do I advance past this?

I've got an early 2011 Macbook Pro running the latest OS, but this afternoon it decided to not start properly, and I was faced with the blinking folder of death. Having googled around the subject a bit, it seems the thing to do is boot and hold the option key, then do a few things to sort it if its sortable. However, its asking for my network, and the password. For some reason, it is completely rejecting the password, even though I know thats the correct one (I'm using it now for instance!).
So how do I move this forward? I'd rather not have to buy a new MBP, but its looking like it might be necessary at this stage, as I need a laptop for my work! I've tried to book into a London apple store, but there are no free slots at any of them.

If you are experiencing this in the Safe Mode, sometimes Wi-Fi won't work in the Safe Mode.

Do you have a current backup? Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then reinstall the OS.

  • Won't burn DVDs, rejecting various DVDs, what to do?

Hi all, I've had my MBP for about a year and a half now, and as of late it's not let me burn DVDs, quite some time ago, and also rejects various DVDs (brand new ones, no scratches on some not copies, genuine DVDs) and I don't know why.
I do have an extended warranty of 3 years, what do I do?

Since I just burned half a dozen single and dual layer DVDs this week and I'm up to date with updates, I think we can scratch that idea. Though if the update didn't quite take on your computer...If you updated via the software updater you can always download the combo updater and apply it again.
Media can be an issue - I have DVDs that my old MacBook burned just fine but my MBP won't. (Different drive manufacturers.) Dirt and dust can also be an issue. I'm not a big fan of optical drive cleaners but if you are out of warranty it is worth a try - for that matter if you are still in warranty it is worth a try. The next step would be a call to Apple.

  • Issue with rating/rejecting pictures

    Hello,
I've upgraded my quite old MBP Core Duo to SL last week.
Since then (I believe, but not sure), I just can't successively rate or reject pictures. I just can use each command (keys from 1 to 5, 9 and 0) once.
For example: If I rate a picture with 3-star using the keyboard, I cannot use the 3star keyboard shortcut for another picture in the same Aperture session.
    Quite strange no?

  • MBP Not reading certain CDs

    Hi,
We've just bought a brand new 2GHz MacBook Pro with an extra 512Mb RAM installed (by Apple). After dutifully downloading about 400Mb of updates, including upgrading it to OSX 10.4.7 and downloading a firmware update (everything went fine), we started to play around with it.
First disk I put in was a Futurama (Season 4) DVD - Apple DVD Player asked to confirm the region selection and said that "The region could only be changed 5 more times" - the disk played fine through both DVD player and Front Row.
Next, I ejected this and put a music CD in (Jools Holland: Swinging the Blues, Dancing the Ska), but the MBP just spat this out. Next, I tried the Office '04 Student Edition installer CD, and after about 3 mins of clicking and whirring, this got spat out too. Thinking we had a dead CD drive on our hands, I tried 3 more music CDs - all worked fine -opened up in iTunes and Front Row and played fine. I even tried the installer CD for Photoshop CS2 and this worked fine, so did the Mac OSX Installer DVD (only software DVD to hand...). A CD that was burnt on our G4 Tower also worked fine
I tried the two problem CDs in my G4 PowerBook (OSX 10.4.5), and they worked absolutely fine.
I've done the basic troubleshooting things - reboot, repair permissions, reboot again, create another user account to see if the problem still exists, and there's no change - the two CDs keep on getting rejected by the MBP.
What's going on here - is there an easy way to resolve this problem without taking the laptop on a 3 hour round-trip drive back to the Apple store? Everything else about it's fine - there is a slight whine but nothing at all to moan about (only noticable when actually listening for it). Are there any prefs files I can trash?
The MBP has the SuperDrive, whereas the PB only has a DVD/CD-RW Combo drive.
    Thanks for the help

The region limitation is explained here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60183
While there are some region free DVD players, none of the ones I've seen on Macs are.
Also Macs don't support Copy Protected CDs:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106882
Disks you've created on media which is not compatible with the drive may also pose a problem:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58641
I've also found a lot of bad media out there. Media stored on spindles have a tendency to last much shorter than media stored in jewelcases.
The fact the Office disk got spat out suggests the drive or the disk in question may be becoming dirty.
While there are disk drive cleaners out there, if your machine is under warranty, I'd recommend you stick with having AppleCare take care of it. Note, with notebook computers you often don't have to drive anywhere. Just call AppleCare, and they'll ship you a box to have it repaired by their service center. Before you do that, backup your data, and be sure to keep track of any case numbers they give you.
    As for your MacBook Pro:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303365
is recognized as something to contact AppleCare about.

  • Correct CS3 serial# not accepted with CS4 upgrade on MBP 10.8

    Hello,
I am using original discs with serial number stickers for CS3 extended and CS4 on a 2008 MBP with 10.8.
    Problem1:
While still having CS3 installed, and  reinstalling CS4, the correct serial # request of pre upgrade version CS3 was repeatedly rejected.
So I removed everything Adobe from HD, ran Adobe cleaner which found nothing.
    Problem2:
Now I am unable to install CS3 as I get "problem with installation, contact Adobe" message...
I manually removed everything Adobe related from HD to no avail.
Who has the know how to solve this conundrum?
    Thank you for your help,
    Cordially, Arjen

Just a possible idea of what might be going on...
Don't I recall that with 10.8 you now can ONLY run 64 bit code?  Apple is pretty ruthless about leaving older versions of things behind without support.
Is it possible Adobe had 32 bit code somewhere in the installers for older versions, designed to work on Macs running OSs that ran both 32 and 64 bit code?  Have you seen anyone able to install a version of Photoshop older than CS6 on Mountain Lion?

  • Mail / iCloud rejects password on one mac but not the other

I have just upgraded my MacbookPro and my MacPro from 10.6 to 10.7.
For whatever reason - the MBP works fine and can access all my email accounts, whilst the MP is constantly rejecting the password for iCloud.
My Mobileme account was upgraded to iCloud several months ago and has been in daily use on both macs ever since.
The only difference in the upgrades is that the MBP upgrade was not a clean install, whereas the MP was installed with a clean hard drive and then all apps/data was transfered over.
Disk permissions have been repaired and that has made no difference.
Both macs are on the same network, with the same passwords and same account settings. Any suggestion how i can resolve this problem?
    adam

i solved the problem by adding a new mail account to Mail, re-inputting the email address and password, then deleting the old problematic one.
    works a treat!

  • Can I use hard drive cable from 15" MBP in 13" MBP?

I'll start of with the tl;dr:
My mid 2012 13" MBP is acting up and I believe it's the hard drive cable that is broken. Thing is, I've got an early 2011 15" MBP with broken GPU. Can I salvage that cable and use in my 13" or will something go to ****?
Problem in general is my 13" MBP doesn't work properly with the connected hard drive. I can boot from an external drive without any issues and I can even see the internal one (luckily I could rescue all my files this way, albeit it transfering them was slow as ****) but I can't boot from the internal one, the computer just stucks on the apple logo forever.
I've also tried reinstalling the OS and managed to start the installer but after installing for roughly 5 hours it got stuck at "less than one minute remaning" over the night so I killed it. Then I tried putting the hard drive in a USB-case and it worked fine. And then I tried another working hard drive as the internal drive and experienced the exact same problem.
Edit: spelling From googling I've concluded that the mid 2012 13" MBP has had issues with broken hard drive cables, so I figured I'd try that. But it would be nice if I didn't have to buy a new one and wait for it to ship
    Any help is welcome!

" I've got an early 2011 15" MBP with broken GPU."
You know there's a recall on that model:
    Apple Recall:
    https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/
Yah don't think swapping the cables will work. Since there's a recall on your 15"  I wouldn't go messing around inside least you get rejected for recall for modding.

  • Retina MBP worth the price?

    Hello,
Trying to decide on a MP or MBP for home use.
I like the idea of the high res screen, but have been reading about problems.
Some web development and gaming in windows 7

The only item I disagree with below is #1, since there are already SSD upgrades available out there. Otherwise, a prospective buyer should consider all points below before deciding if the Retina is the correct purchase for their situation.
The Retina makes sense for a lot of people and I think it's a brilliant machine. But if I was to buy today, I would reject a MacBook Pro Retina for me. The older MacBook Pro would be more productive for my specific uses, for many of the reasons below.
    Courcoul wrote:
And there are considerably more disadvantages on the Retina MBP
The system is sealed. No upgrades possible. Plonk down all your cash from the start.
All servicing will have to be done by Apple, as components are custom and only available from them.
The I/O ports are limited to TB, USB3, SDXC card, HDMI and analog headphone out (missing FW800, Gbit Ethernet, digital audio out and digital/analog audio in from the regular model).
Need to purchase external dongles for anything not covered by the default I/O ports.
No internal optical drive, need to carry an external dongle if you use the media.
No antiglare option on the screen.

  • Yahoo mail issues on Lion OS 13" MBP 2011

Hello Apple Community. I have a problem on setting my yahoo mail on mail features on my MBP 2011. The first time I lunch it and setup it to hotmail it work. However when I add another account for yahoo mail it didn't work. I search everywhere and entered correctly the incoming and outgoing server and the port and tried other alternatives like plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com and plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com or wthout plus and trying ports 993 or 995 and also for the other port. It didn't work. I have an iphone classic already set-up for hotmail and yahoo and been using already. I tried delete those accounts on my iphone and try to set-up again on my MBP but still didn't work and prompts me that my password is been rejected by pop server. I also changing my username with or without @yahoo.com. But still it doesn't work. I already search here in apple community and followed carefully every step but i still fail on setting it up on my yahoo mail. I changed my yahoo mail account to visible which is before not visible to public but I failed so many times. Any help here who encounters same problem on Lion OS? Thanks!

If this is a stock MBP then it really is shipped with just enough RAM, 4GBs. If you have many Apps open and then try to use LaunchPad the whole computer may freeze for a moment while swaping out info from physical memory to the hard drive (also the hard drives that come in the MBP are of the SLOW type, 5400RPMs as apposed to faster 7200RPM models).
Not sure how long you have been a Mac user but if you are fairly new there is one thing you need to know.
In Windows when you click the X in the upper right hand side of an application that App closes and frees up the memory it was using.
With a Mac when you click the X in the upper left hand corner all that does is close the windows that was open. It does not exit the program. The program is still running and loaded into memory. You have to either go tomthe menu bar and select Quit "Program name". If that last program name is not on the menu bar then you have to do a Command+Tab until it is then Quit Program. You can also use Command+Q to quit the active program.
So if you are moving from Windows to Mac you probably end up with quite few programs open thinking you have closed them. This can add to the freezing you are seeing.

  • Move from MBP 17 to 13

I have a MBP 17, i7 mid 2010 model.  I love it, but it's not all that portable, being quite heavy.  I do a lot of hiking/camping with cameras, and I carry my laptop with me to process photos with Aperture and Photoshop while on the trail.  I tried the iPad, but I hated it (basically useless with photo processing, not sure why it pretends to be something), so I'm considering moving to a lighter MBP.  I rejected the MacBook because of being a generation or two behind the MBP's.
My only concern with the MBP 13, current model, is the integrated graphics.  Am I going to be all right with HD video and Aperture/Photoshop?  Or is the graphics on the computer so limiting that I might be sacrificing a lot.  All other issues, I'm considering  a wash, or I'm already weighing it in as an upgrade.

Yea, the iPad is severly lacking, a severe joke for professioanl use.
Forget the MacBook too, case cracks and chips like bad china.
What about the the MacBook Air for the trail and keep the 17" around for more heavy lifting where you need power,  portability and have something to carry it in, like a car or a heavy duty pickup truck
I got a whole SUV to carry my 17" i7 Quad around, get's it's own seat, belt and cup holder.
For more portable use I have a couple of Linux netbooks, but those small screens are just terrible for daily use, same issue is going to occur on the 13" MacBook Pro.
Least the MacBook Air is light and thin, does the job in a pinch, but not as a main machine, you do the Photoshop and heavy lifting on the 17" instead. Big screens make a difference when editing.
Yes, integrated graphics does s*ck, not a "professional use" type machine, your not going to be happy with the 13" MBP I'm thinking.

  • ICloud rejects my password

why is the icloud server rejecting my password?

I'm having the same problem on my iMac amd MacBook Pro. I can log into iCloud via brouser, but can't get mail on MB and MBP.  I called AppleCare and she refused to help unless I perchased a 30 day support for the iMac and MacBook....

  • Help! My MBP has commited suicide!

I installed a windows partition on my MBP and ever since it has been rejecting disks. It makes a loading sound which just dies and then it rejects the disks. Then the OS X partition dissapeared. Then the same happened to the windows partition. I have tried using my OS X disk but it is rejected. So hear I am with a Macbook Pro which can't boot anything! I am no longer under warrentee. HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hard to tell what may have happened, but it sounds like you may have formatted your OS X partition instead of the Boot Camp partition or your hard drive has failed or become otherwise corrupted.
If you have another Mac with Firewire you can try to recover your files using Target Disk Mode. But what you will need to do is erase the drive and reinstall OS X. You will need to do the following:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete your OS X installation.
BTW, you've posted in the wrong forum for your model. This is the Late 2008 forum.
