CD Sharing with two macbooks

Hey, I don't really know too much about computers but hopefully someone can help me out....my mom and I are trying to upgrade our macbooks to Snow Leopard, but unfortunately my optical drive is no longer functional...however I think there is a way to enable cd sharing between the two computers. I have enable sharing but don't exactly know what to do next...any tips? Is this even possible?

Is a CD in the Shared disk on the other machine? If so, go to finder on the machine with the broken CD. Look under "Devices" for "Remote Disc". Click on that and it should show the other machine name. Expand that link and you'll see the mounted DVD. Double click that and it should mount on your machine.
Cheers
Edit: Sorry, that was for MacBook Air. Go to finder on the machine with the broken DVD reader and look under Shared. The other machine name should be there. Click on it and when it connects you should see the mounted DVD.

  • Home sharing with two Macbooks and two Ipod/Iphones

Ive read the tutorials on Home Sharing and am still unclear as to how to move content between two spousal computers, each authorised on separate Ipods/Iphones
We can see each others' Itunes accounts on our network and play content accordingly. 90% of our content is the same (why we are happily married for 25 years) but the 10% that is different is the issue. We cant drag and drop music from one to the other currently.
The tutorial says we have to login to the same Itunes account to move content, but when we do this, it warns us that this will deactivate the Ipod on the other machine - which we dont want of course. We want to move the few songs from one Itunes account to the other while keeping our Ipods/Iphones authorised on our separate machines.
Am i misunderstanding the Home Sharing functionality or is it designed only for a 'shared Itunes account' essentially? That wouldnt work for us.

Ipod/iphones have nothing to do with Home Sharing.
Your ipods/iphones should not even be connected to the computer when you are using home sharing.
Move the music, then sign into your regular account, then sync.

How do I use Home Sharing with two different apple accounts?

    Morning Saintine,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Home Sharing enables you to stream or transfer music, movies, TV shows, apps, and more among up to five authorized computers in your household. To do so, you will need to Turn on Home Sharing on each computer using the same Apple ID.

  • My finder is showing that a PC is sharing with my MacBook.

My finder is showing that a PC is sharing with my MacBook. I don't know whose computer it is and my wi-fi network has a password, which I have changed. How do I get rid of it?
The Get Info button says it's a sharepoint memory card, but I can't access its contents.  And I did not accidently leave a memory card in my computer.

Since it shows a memory card, and the name starts with "hp", is there a chance that it is a networked HP printer/scanner type of device that is connected somewhere on your network? The memory card readers on such devices often show up on networks.

  • If I use the remote with two macbooks in the same room both of them answer

If I use the remote with two macbooks in the same room, the two of them answer. So if the person sitting near me is doing something else I interrupt them... this is quite annoying!
Does anyone know how to solve this? Should I report it as a bug? Where?

    Hi Carito,
It is not a bug, all you have to do is pairing them.

  • I have an airport extreem network that works with two MacBooks.  I am trying to get my PC (IBM ThinkPad) to connect to the network.  The PC has airport for the PC downloaded but it will not recognize the network.  Any suggestons please!

I have an airport extreem network that works with my two MacBooks and a iMAC.  I am having no luck in getting a PC (IBM ThinkPad0 that has the PC airport software to be recognized by the network.  Any suggestions?

When you introduced the AirPort Extreme, you had a condition where you have two routers in series. The simpliest solution is to reconfigure the downstream router (in this case the Extreme) as a bridge. This will allow the upstream router to provide the required NAT & DHCP services to all network clients regardless of which router they are connected to.
To reconfigure the Extreme as a bridge, you will use the AirPort Utility. (Note: I will provide the steps for using AirPort Utility v5.x)
AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Manual Setup
Internet > Internet Connection tab > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)

  • Wireless file sharing between two MacBooks

I feel like this is kind of a silly question, but here goes:
Is it possible to set up wireless file sharing between two macs when there is no wireless network available.
For example, if I am on a plane (with no wi-fi) and wan to wirelessely connect to my partners macbook to browse his hard drive, can I do it? Right now, I use a firewire cable when flying, but would love to not have to.
    Thanks for the help.

    Yes, it's possible to do.
You setup one of the Macs to act as a base station of sorts. If you've got the AirPort Status menu shown you can just use the 'Create Network…' option in that menu to create a new wireless network hosted on this Mac. Just tell the other Mac to connect to that network using the name and security credentials you specified when you created the network, and you're done.

  • Tried to setup Shared between two MacBooks, now cannot login to either

I tried to setup a sharing folder between two MacBooks at home, both have Snow Leopard and with the latest software update, but when I turned off both MacBooks then turned them back on, it will not go pass the white Apple screen showing it's processing, but does not go to the login screen.
What can I do to login back into my MacBooks?
    Thanks
    -Erica

    Ok, I don't follow that.
You selected the Hard Drive and Get Info.
Now, did you click the Shared Folder check box, or did you go to Sharing and Permissons and make changes?
changed the shared settings to a folder on both MacBooks
There is no ability to change settings to a folder from the Get Info panel. You can add a user and give them specific access, or change the current user's access rights, but not indicate a folder.

  • Problem using DVD/CD sharing between two MacBooks

Trying to share the DVD/CD drive between two MacBooks one running 10.5.5 the other 10.4.11. Both have the DVD/CD migration sharing update, and we've followed the instructions for setting up sharing between the two systems. They are both connected to the same wireless network. For whatever reason, we cannot see each other's DVD drive, there is no icon on the left hand side of the Finder window. We've RTFM, so if you have any additional insight into this issue, please let me know, as we're a little perplexed by the issue.

I haven't done that kind of networking since OS9 days but I remember back then that connected drives were not part of the network. Of course OSX has come a long way so I'm likely out of date. I have read DVD drives are visible if you are connecting in Target Disk Mode.
[How to use FireWire target disk mode|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583] includes description of hardware and software requirements.
[What to do if your Mac doesn't enter FireWire Target Disk Mode|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75414], also read about [Open Firmware Password Protection|http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/openfirmwarepassword.html] which can disable Target Disk Mode.

  • Can a Pages document be shared with two iCloud accounts?

Is there any way that a Pages document could be shared automatically between two
    different iCloud accounts?
iCloud gets my documents to all of the devices with my iCloud id.
Now I need to share it with someone with a different iCloud id.
    Thanks.

You should each use your own icloud accounts, not the same one.  You can share calendars, and you can each the other account as a secondary account.
You can set up a secondary iCloud account in system preferences > mail, contacts and calendars, click to add a new account, choose iCloud, click the 'create ID' button.

  • CD Sharing Between Two MacBook Pros?

I'm wanting to share the CD drive on my new MacBook Pro so that I can access it from my older 1st generation MacBook Pro. Is this possible or only available on the Air? I'm running 10.5.5 on both machines.

I do have the latest updates installed. Considering my network sharing isn't working quite right, I will probably just reinstall Leopard on the old notebook and try again. So long as I know that CD sharing is possible between these two and I'm not chasing a ghost, I will keep trying.
    Thanks for the info.
Before you do a reinstall, let me try it between my two MBPs later today and I will report back. I have not used it in a while so it's possible that some update has changed things.
I will report back this afternoon.

  • Our AirPort works fine with two MacBooks in the house, but not my iPhone or a PC laptap...why?

Help. We live in a house with 3 people. Two of us have macs, the other PC. The girl with the PC has never been able to connect to the wi-fi. Her computer will show full bars, but will tell her that it is unable to connect. Then I got a new iPhone and same thing...strong network signal, correct password, but it tells me that it cannot connect. Why does this happen? Why won't airport let us connect?

AT&T has not completely updated the MicroCell page and links. The new MicroCell is the black DPH-154 model which is replacing the white "Y" shaped models and you describe it. Functionally, they are currently the same. The only difference is that Cisco/AT&T has done away with the external antenna port and the Computer port. It's not a money making scam.
You can have multiple phones connected to the MicroCell at any one time without issues. One of the iPhones I assume has the phone number that is associated with the AT&T mobile account. That should be the phone number used to register the MicroCell with (what we call the primary number). The other iPhone, which I will assume is on the same account, needs to be added to the Approved Users List. Once you add the "problem" phone, turn off the phone and then turn it back on so that it can add the MicroCell to its cellular neighborhood.

  • Windows sharing with two network cards

    Hello,
I am running OSX 10.4.11 and enables Windows file service.
I have two network cards. one is public (due to the web server) and one is private (192.x.x.x).
Is there a way to make only the 192.x.x.x accessible via the Windows file services? I don't want anyone that is a local user to be able to get to any of the shared folders via the public address. Like if they were at home or something.
    Hope this makes sense.
    Thanks,
    Jay

    Hello Jay,
    Your question does make sense!
And in fact Samba (the software that delivers the Windows file service on a Mac) has configuration options to do just what you want. That's the good news. The bad news is that I don't know a way to set those configuration options from the GUI. If you are confident to use a terminal and edit configuration files by hand then you should be able to establish the Windows file service running on just one interface.
First you need to find out the real name of the interface on which the Windows file service should run. One way is to look under Apple\About this Mac\Network or in a terminal enter:
    ifconfig
My Mac Mini has en0 (wired) and en1 (airport) as network interfaces. Suppose en1 is the interface on which file sharing is wanted (you should replace en1 in my example by the name of your network interface!)
Next edit the file /etc/smb.conf in a terminal by:
    sudo nano /etc/smb.conf
In the [global] section add the following lines:
    interfaces = en1
    bind interfaces only = true
Save your edits by pressing Ctrl-O and exit the editor by pressing Ctrl-X
After restarting you can check if it works as expected.
    Good luck,
    Max
