Cd stuck in drive, iMac doesn't even realise disc is there

I have a CD stuck in the drive of my 27" iMac (iMac10,1). Eject button does nothing, there's no disc icon on the desktop. I even tried opening the 'Disk Utility.app' and when I right-click on the CD/DVD drive and bring up the information window it says (amongst other things):
Media is present :   No
I'm stumped, not sure what to do.
Thanks for any help.

check out Kappy's user tip:
Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
4. Press COMMAND-E.
5. If none of the above work try this:
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following: /usr/bin/drutil eject.
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into single-user mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above.
To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • Disc stuck in dead iMac

Hi, I have a slot-loading iMac DV 400 that died quite a while ago (lightning, ouch) and it had a disc in the CD drive at the time. I have a new 2 Ghz 17" G5 now, but I want to use that disc and since the iMac is pretty dead there are no commands or tricks I can use to get it without damaging the disc (i.e. tweezers). I'm about to take apart the iMac and remove the CD drive and see if I can get it out then. I'm using the guide from the "iMac Take Apart" site so you don't need to post any links to it, but I thought I'd put a post here incase my idea doesn't work. Well thats about it for now, thanks for reading my problem =)

Well I was able to get the CD drive out without much difficulty, however it seems to have an iMac dead grip on the disc as there is a metal bar preventing the disc from being taken out of the front. This makes sense since the disc was in the iMac normally when it got fried and it seems like that metal bar is there so that when the disc is spinning in the comp it doesn't come flying out and decapitate you. Anyway now I'll have to try taking apart the CD drive itself to get at the disc. Hopefully I can do it without damaging anything (and be able to put it back together afterwards). I'll post another update soon

  • My imac doesn't recognize my backup drive anymore, what can i do?

My Imac doesn't recognize my backup drive anymore, what can i do?

Unfortunately, that usually means the drive has died although it doesn't mean some other hardware failure or even software failure (in some cases.)
I think the wise thing to do is take it in for service.

  • My iMac doesn't recognize the hard drive

Hi all.  I have a question.  I have a iMac G5 20" 2Ghz and I'm trying to instal a replacement hard drive.    It's a WD 320GB HD with wite and blue stiker (It's a WD Caviar Blue).  I'm trying to instal MAC OSX 10.5 it a retail full version DVD and when I get to the screen to select drive it doesn't see it.  I went to Disc Utility and looks like it show the disc but there is no information.  All I could get it is:
    S.M.A.R.T status - not suported
    Partition Map Sheme - Unformated
    Total capacity _ 0 bytes
    Please help.  Thanks

Try reformatting the drive as Mac OS extended (journaled) and see if that works.
What do you mean by "foreclosure"?

  • How do you get a cd out of the imac g5 drive if the computer doesn't know it's in there.  I've tried shutting it off and holding the mouse button, but nothing works because the computer can't eject what it isn't registering to be there in the first place.

I can't get access to the cd that is probably slid past where it is supposed to go.  The computer doesn't note it is in there.  This happened once before and I used another cd to tap it into place, and then I could eject the cd.  It's a library music cd and nothing I've done to eject it, works.  The dvd drive is empty to the computer, even though I've tried to trick it by getting it to burn a cd or dvd.  It says insert disc.  Hope someone knows how to pop it into place or open the thing up to get access to the drive.  That cd is due!

power off your machine.  hold down your left mouse button.  power on your machine.  This should eject the cd.
    Eject cd

You indicate you are running on a g5, but 10.6 doesn't run on on a G5.
On a PowerPC-based Macintosh (but not an Intel-based Macintosh), you may use Open Firmware to eject a CD or DVD disc when normal methods for ejecting it have not succeeded.
Immediately after the startup sound, press and hold the key combination Command-Option-o-f. Enter commands:
    eject cd
    mac-boot

  • IMac doesn't "see" USB Flash drive on initial insertion

    Hi,
I have a new iMac running Mavericks with a powered SIIG external USB hub. (Rear USB port design on iMac is inconvenient).
Problem: When I insert a NTFS-formatted USB Flash drive into the hub, the light blinks as expected, but the iMac doesn't "see" it and it doesn't show up in "Devices".
When I remove and re-insert the USB drive, the iMac then "sees" it just fine and it shows up in "Devices"
    Seeing this consistently.
Any ideas what might be happening here?
I also have Paragon NTFS installed to enable read/write to external NTFS drives.
    Thanks.

I've tried 2 Anker 10 port hubs with my brand new iMac 27" Retina.  No storage device is recognized when connected via the hub.  The same storage devices are recognized when I plug directly into my iMac.  So there seems to be an issue from the iMac to the hub.

  • IPod stuck in recovery mode, and doesn't even appear in iTunes, so I can't restore, HELP!

So my iPod appears to be stuck in recovery mode, which shouldn't be a problem, but for some reason is isn't showing up on my computer. I'm not getting the "is not recognizable error" It just literally doesn't even exist to my computer, My iPod doesn't even show up in the devises on my computer, BUT WHEN I PLUG IT IN, IT CHARGES? so I'm just really confused, any input would be great. Thanks!

    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • The iMac doesn't recognize my external hard disk

My iMac doesn't recognize my external hard disk. The iMac also keeps a DVD inside. It doen't throw it out despite "eject".

Sounds like you might need to make that call. In the meantime here are a few of things you could try that may help:
To eject the disk try a restart holding down the mouse button - hopefully it'll eject.
If you are running either Mountain Lion (10.8) or Lion (10.7) try booting into the Recovery HD:
Restart holding down Command+r. At the screen with 4 choices choose Disk Utility and then select Macintosh HD and click on repair disk. If it fixes anything click on repair disk again until you get a clean pass. Restart as normal from the Apple menu.
If you are running an earlier OS you would normally carry out this process by putting the grey restore disk that came with your Mac in the Disk drive and restarting holding down the C key. Choose your language and at the next screen from the menu bar select Utilities>Disk Utility and then follow the above instructions (I realise you won't be able to do this if you have a disk stuck in the optical disk drive).
Try an SMC and PRAM reset: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603
Try a Safe Boot: Restart holding down the shift key until you see a grey progress bar. Once it's booted restart as normal from the Apple menu.
If none of this helps, I guess you need to make that call. Good luck.

  • 2 cd's stuck in intel iMac.. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats what my friend in Australia said to me (I am in New Zealand so 4 hours on a plane away! so cant go look)
Itunes was copying a cd and was about to burn it evidently and asked her to insert a blank disk so she stuck it gently in the slot and it sucked it in!!! now she thinks there are 2 cd disks in there ! there are 2 CD images on the desktop 1 for the music cd and 1 for the blank disk
This is what she recons happened though I cannot see how anyone could even with a great deal of force put 2 cd's in a slot drive at once !! and she used no force the drive grabbed it and sucked it in but now there seems no way to eject it/them
I am assuming there is one disk in there and suggested the eject button and dragging and reboot hold mouse idea and none of that works . The drive makes a few noises but nothing comes out
So whats the story with intel iMacs.. is there no physical way like paper clips or others to eject it/.. I also heard you could boot to open firmware and type in something to eject it that way but it doesnt seem to respond to the commands to start in open firmware.. maybe intel Imacs dont have open firmware ?
is there some command line way at boot up to do this ?
    or some other way ?
Yes she is blonde but i cant believe this is her fault..

    Yes thanks
    it was only 1 cd
I thoguht she may have been confused with the 2 icons
evidently it was a Karaoke CD and it comes up as 2 disks
    1 audio content
    1 video content
I am glad no one can force 2 cd's in their iMac
thanks a bunch she was killer herself laughing

  • Disc stuck in drive, tried every thing

This isn't a mechanical problem, I can hear the computer trying to read the disc.
When I restart the computer and hold the mouse button it just tries to read the disc for hours...
Even if I restart the computer and don't hold the mouse button, it just sits there, it doesn't even load OS X or display the folder with a question mark.
I'm short of time now, I'll post more details later...
    Any help is appreciated

OK I have more time now...
I tried to install Vista on my 2.0 Ghz Core Duo 2 Macbook, when I inserted the disc nothing out of the norm' happened. Every thing sounded completely normal.
When I reset the computer, it just hangs, trying to read the disc. I have even let it sit for hours.
Now It's stuck in the drive and the computer won't boot-up. It's not a mechanical problem, because I can hear the disc spinning and the laser moving, as if it's scanning the whole disc. I've tried every thing to get it out of the drive. Even holding down the mouse button, to removing the HDD and installing another OS on it from another computer. It seems to be simply ignoring me when I press the eject button.
Am I gonna have to take it apart or some thing?
'Cause I really don't wanna do that...
Oh and sorry for double posting.
I can't seem to find the edit button again...

  • Can't burn data to a CD because iMac doesn't recognize CD has been inserted.  Also, can't eject.  What to do?

Can't burn data to a CD because iMac doesn't recognize that a CD has been inserted.  Also, it won't let me eject the disk. How do I get my iMac to let me burn the data to the CD and eject the disk?
Finder currently has 2 "Untitled CD"s listed in it.  One has been in there for months (without a CD inserted into the machine).  I have tried several times unsuccessfully to remove the item from finder.

Please reset the SMC and PRAM 2-3 times each using the instructions in https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603.  Then attempt to eject. If that fails please use one of Kappy's ideas:
