Cd stuck in superdrive

I have an cd stuck in the superdrive. It gets out only partial but something still got hold of it inside the drive. So I can not force it out. the only solution seems to be to lay the mac flat on it's face (display) and then eject the cd. It comes out that way but it seems to me that this is not a proper way to do it.
Are there any other ways I can try? I do not want the paperclip method and the open firmware trick did not work. The cd is ejected the same way as in the finder: stuck.
I do not have this with all cd's. The mac display has been replaced could this replacement lead to the odd behaviour? I never had the problem before.

My wife had the "stuck-in-the-superdrive" problem and we solved it by holding the iMac screen down and ejecting. It seems that there is an alignment problem between the drive door and the very narrow slot cut in the side of the iMac. It sounded like the escaping CD was hitting something on it's way out and could not clear the door. We tried Apple Support and were told that they could not help us unless we purchased "Apple Care" support, so we were in the process of opening the case when we decided to try different positions.
I noticed that Apple used a rubber flap with a slit cut in it to line the opening, maybe the plastic disk hits the rubber and cannot push hard enough to "slide" the plastic into the slit.
Just a thought!

  • Audio CD stuck in SuperDrive - Startup will not complete - Can't eject CD

Disclaimer: I'm troubleshooting this problem for my sister long distance. She has my old iMac 17" Flat Panel G4 with Tiger loaded, SuperDrive, all that.
She was loading music to iTunes and put in a homemade audio CD which caused the system to freeze. (Sounds like a KP, yes?) She could not eject the CD. She has tried numerous restarts. The system goes through diagnostics (telling her she has not shut down properly.) When it starts going through startup, it gets part of the way through and freezes.
I read through this discussion board and had her try holding down the mouse button during startup to eject the CD. That did not work.
I had her boot into Safe mode and try to eject the CD. It would not eject. She shut down properly from Safe mode, but upon the next boot attempt, she had to deal with the same diagnostics, etc. Same problem.
I am stumped. Can anyone offer me any suggestions/solutions for getting the CD out of the drive and booting normally? At this point, I can't even have her wipe and load the OS, because a CD is stuck in the drive. Thanks.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    Switch on/reboot
After the startup chime, press and hold the keys <command/apple> <alt/option> <o> and <f>
At the command line prompt, type: eject cd
Hit Return, the optical drive will then eject.
    Type: mac-boot
    Hit return.

  • Audio CD stuck in SuperDrive -- common remedies did nothing

Hi. Thanks in advance for your help. I am at my wit's end.
My MacBook Pro is less than two weeks old. I have not used the SuperDrive for DVD viewing or any kind of burning. The only thing I have done with it so far is import a handful of audio CDs to my iTunes library, which was working fine until yesterday.
One CD simply will not eject. The drive makes the grinding mechanical sound as if it's trying to eject the disc, and it will successfully unmount the volume from the desktop, but the disc does not come out.
    I have tried:
    1. Pushing the trackpad button upon startup -- about 80 times. Same thing happens. Noise, but no disc.
    2. Pushing the eject button repeatedly -- on startup, on idle, on shutdown, etc. Same thing happens. Noise, but no disc.
    3. Launching terminal, typing "hdiutil eject disk1". Same thing happens. Noise, but no disc.
    4. Doing all these steps in every physical contortion possible: upside-down, at an angle, jumping up and down, shaking the machine lightly but firmly, etc.
    5. Letting the machine "cool off" overnight.
The drive is otherwise acting normally. It usually remounts the volume upon startup and the disc plays normally, imports tracks normally, etc. I even used a drive program to verify the disc itself is still in perfectly readable condition. But the **** drive won't let go of the disc, no matter what I do.
This is the first computer I have ever used that doesn't have a manual eject on its CD drive. I have to say it's the most counterintuitive thing not to have one. Sometimes things get physically stuck -- for whatever reason -- and no amount of software coaxing is going to fix it. For what it's worth, this is a normal audio CD, but it has a sort of black plastic look to it (designed to look like an old record, but the disc seems regulation and isn't noticeably thicker).
I would gladly use a tool to grab the disc and pull it out with my hands if I weren't afraid of damaging the drive. As it is I can't really even see or feel where the disc sits once it goes inside the slot.
I have no desire to lug it to the Apple store only to be told that I need to press the trackpad button. I am so far beyond the need for basic suggestions.
The sad thing is that up until yesterday, I was so excited to have this machine. My first laptop and my first computer in over 6 years. I was treating it with much love and care; now the lustre is all gone and I'm ready to throw the dysfunctional piece of plastic garbage against the wall. At least if I do that, the disc might dislodge.

Thanks for the help, but no, that's not the same thing. In my case, the CD wasn't spinning or hanging the system in any way. It would alternate between playing normally (mounted) and thinking that it had ejected (unmounted) but without actually spitting the disk out. It did not interfere with the system at all - it simply couldn't be switched out for another volume and therefore made the drive, and only the drive, unusable.
    My solution was as follows:
    (1) take machine on following day to nearby Apple store
    (2) sign up for reservation at Genius Bar in Apple store. I was third on the list for an immediate consultation, and waited about 10 minutes
    (3) very cool woman at Genius Bar very confidently stuck plastic knife-like thing into SuperDrive and hacked at it; CD did not come out
    (4) very cool woman asked herself how easily SuperDrives come out of casing on MacBook Pro
    (5) very cool woman agreed that yes, SuperDrives do come out easily
    (6) very cool woman asked me if I could wait ten minutes. She then took the machine somewhere else. A few minutes later, she came back with the offending CD in her hand (out of the drive)
    (7) very cool woman then told me she was going to try another disc -- which promptly got very stuck
    (8) Apple store exchanged my computer for a new one, right then and there, and offered to transfer files for me (which I didn't need to have done)
    (9) went home happy and problem has not reoccurred.

  • Mini-disk stuck in SuperDrive

I shoved a mini-cd into my MacBook pro's SuperDrive and, when nothing happened, used another dick to push it in further. It doesn't show on the desk top and I'm at a loss as to how to retrieve it. ( yes, I know this was a numb move.) can anyone suggest a remedy short of professional help?
    Thanks

    Hehe, DON'T ...
You can easily suck in the dusters at the entrance of the slot with another great chance at mis-aligning the optical head due to excessive airflow ...
    That's one ill recommendation ..
And please stop following posts of other to cause more stir .. It's obvious what you are doing and now with this acc I can even report you

  • DVD Stuck Inside Superdrive

I watched a DVD, pushed the Eject button (F12), the eject symbol on the screen lit up, but the DVD did not eject. Now, the Superdrive isn't showing up on the desktop.
I've restarted the computer...nothing. I've held the eject button down for a while...nothing.
Any ideas? I'm in Afghanistan, so taking the Superdrive to an Apple store is not an option. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

My apologies for not being clearer. You can find the Terminal application the the Utilities folder, which is inside your Applications folder. Alternatively you can just enter the word Terminal in Spotlight (the little magnifying glass on the top right of your screen).
When you open Terminal you should see a command prompt.
Type "drutil tray eject" (without the quotes and all in lower case) and press the return/enter key.
This basically sends a low level command to the Superdrive to spit out whatever is in it. My experience is that this has a higher chance of success then pushing keys when restarting. If this command doesn't work I'm afraid the disk is blocked somehow.

  • CD STUCK IN SUPERDRIVE - NOT RECOGNIZABLE BY OS - VERY, VERY URGENT.

Hello fellow apple users. I just came back from an Apple Store (irony, urgh) and upon inserting my Snow Leopard Installing CD, it got stuck halfway, so I.. forced it in a little. Stupid, I know.
And it got stuck, very stuck.
But thing is, **general tips** (rebooting, using DiskUtility, Terminal commands, etc) don't work because THE SYSTEM DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE DISK, meaning that according to my computer there's nothing in there.
The OS is fine and all, but meh... I just want it out! Will using a plastic knife work? I already tried the credit card manual method, but it's way too in for it.
    Help? It's very important.
    Thanks.

How much shoving did you have to do to get it to disappear. If it was alot (like if you felt like the process was scratching the **** out of the disc) then you may well have damaged internal components of the drive and it will require replacing. The techs, knowing this, and knowing that they aren't authorised to open or repair the drive itself (it gets diagnosed by the tech locally and then sent back to the factory as an exchange for a replacement under warranty) will have to charge you for a new part from apple and the out-of-warranty replacement labour and that figure could well exceed $500, possibly by a long way!
If the disc insertion wasn't so damaging they may elect to just open the drive and hope it works ok once the disc is removed. This will cost you about $80-$150 for the labour and will indicate that you've chosen a shop that has nice people running it. The work wont be guaranteed to work if the drive turns out to be damaged, tho.
*NOTE: in either case your warranty for the whole computer will be void after the fix, so things will become REALLY expensive if future repairs are ever needed.
If possible, you should use long flat tweezers to attempt to locate and remove the disc. If you get it out and the drive is damaged, then just take it in and say it isnt working anymore. Say nothing more than that. They'll deem it faulty and under warranty and have it replaced for free, without any further investigation. Dont leave scratches or mark around the slot when/if you remove the disc.
Also try holding down the space bar from the moment you power up till the desktop has fully booted up. Try the previously mentioned method of holding down the mouse button continuously from the moment you power on till everything is booted or the disc ejects. You should hear a sound from the drive near the start of boot, but that isnt the eject happening (its just a hardware check). Keep the mouse button held down and wait till you hear it making more noises.
Otherwise hold down option till you get a series of startup system choices appear on screen. At this point, Before you choose a system and continue, try the eject button and try Command-E and try command-Y
Lastly, reset the SMC and NVRAM (PRAM)- consult relevant instructions on how to do it for your model. This isnt likely to be the answer but as a last resort, stranger things have happened.
    good luck

  • 2 cds stuck in superdrive

Hey I already had a cd in my super drive and I by mistake inserted another one. No they both are stuck. I dont know what to do now?
This should be possible in the first place..
    Plz help!..

If you have AppleCare, give them a call.  Let them deal w/it.  If not, take your MBP to your local Apple Store or AASP.
This should be possible in the first place..
I do not know of any slot loading computers or CD/DVD players that allows 2 discs be inserted into the same slot!

  • DVD stuck in superdrive. What do I do?

I'm sure it's not a software problem, because when I press eject, I hear noises, but the DVD doesn't come out. Every time I press eject, DVD Player pops up, and a movie starts playing.

Then it is physically stuck either due to drive failure or that the media was out of specs. If the Mac is still under warranty and/or don't want to ruin the drive, you'll have to take it in to an Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider.
This is a fairly common occurrence and the techs there have ample experience in coaxing the thing out. Might even do it for free.

  • DVD stuck in Superdrive

I was watching a DVD, and when it finished, I went to go eject it.
The ejecting noise started but didn't work and the DVD remained inside as though it just received a new DVD.
I've tried moving it sideways to eject, but nothing happens and the DVD scratching noise started.
Anyway I can get eject it successfully?
MacBook 2.0Ghz White Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Doesn't work. I've tried to restart quite a few times. What you suggested worked for me before for a DVD that played, but then couldn't be read. This DVD has not been successfully read. Now, after spinning for a few minutes, it makes an attempt to spit it out, but can't. The sounds are all right for ejection, but the DVD just doesn't appear. Thanks and help appreciated.

Your post is extremely difficult to undertand but it sound like you  have 2 discs stuck in the superdrive , therefore you need to take the machine in for repair.

  • Disc stuck and Mac does not recognize superdrive

I have an iMac G5 (no video camera). I have been using the superdrive without problem until today. I placed a DVD in the drive and nothing. I have tried every method I could think of to eject it. Ominously, the drive does not even appear when I run system profile.
Any thoughts on how to fix this short of a repair trip to Apple? Thanks!

Try the Eject option in the Finder>File Menu.

How do I get a stuck dvd out of a superdrive.  I've tried the eject key on the keyboard and "drutil eject" in terminal.

Does drutil eject result in any noise?
If so, repeat it as often as necessary until you give up since there is no other way of removing the disc, short of disassembly.
If not, the mechanism is stuck or there is no communication to the optical drive, which will also require disassembly and possible replacement of the drive.
