CD Tray Will Not Close (iBook Dual USB 500MHz)

I have a iBook Dual USB 500MHz that only has one problem: the CD tray will not close. I'd rather not disassemble it. How does the tray catch and where? Thanks!

Hey Tom,
I've got a Combo Drive here in a taken apart G3 500. I opened it up and took some pix. They're here:
http://www.photolava.com/view/bsm8.html
So to get here you'll have to remove the drive from the iBook and remove the top.
You're looking at the locking mechanism and the manual release mechanism.
So from what I see the things that could go wrong:
1) That split ring could fall off and the latching hook would fall off/jam.
2) The solenoid could be stuck in a retracted position or the return spring could
fail.
3) Either the latching hook or the latching solenoid hook could be broken.
If you need help taking the Combo drive out eMail me.

  • Optical drive tray will not close

I bought my Hp laptop yesterday and after charging it fully, i decided it was time to investigate. In doing so, I ejected the optical drive - one of the main reasons i bought it and attempted to close it again. But it won't. I have tried several times, not wanting to over do it and break it, but to no avail. Note that I have not damaged it in any way, it just doesn't want to stay shut!  How do i get it to close...and stay closed?! Thanks.

, Hello and thanks for posting on the HP support forums.  From what you are describing you will have two choices.  First and easiest is to take it back to the store for exchange.  The sensor for the cd tray is not working right and needs to be pulled and repaired.  This will require it being sent in for repair to HP. Contact HP Support. Most stores have a 14 day return policy so with your system being so new it would be much faster. The turn around on a repair could take 10 days. Thanks again for posting and have a great day.

  • The CD for iPhoto 2, iMovie 3 would not load in my Apple iBook Dual USB.

The CD for iPhoto 2, iMovie 3 would not load in my Apple iBook Dual USB.
    It was "NOT AUTHORIZED".
Can anyone tell me what this means?
    Thank you

Take another look. A (nominal) 10 GB hard drive only has about 9.31 GB to begin with. The OS takes up some room, as do other applications.
Please check out how much space has been used and how much remains available.

  • Ibook will not close?

iBook will not close, manual says tap center of page, nothing happens.

The Manual says 'If an app is unresponsive but the system seems to respond to button presses, you can force the app to close:
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app's preview up to close it.'

  • My CD/DVD drive tray will not stay closed

I have a G3 dual USB iBook and my CD/DVD-Rom tray will not stay closed. Any idea's how to fix this?

OK .. I'd been struggling with this problem for a number of weeks - on a friends iBook ( I'm not sure of the Factory Config - but it is a G4).
Anyway - I've scoured these files on the Apple Support system with NO luck at all - and a number of other forums and support sites... that is until I came across a mention of resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit). This URL was given: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449#faq6 .... which of course leads right back here!
But I read all the info and then sought out the appropriate method for a PMU reset and did it. VOILA! It worked.
Now ... I would suggest that this would be a good time to run a Disk Utility (like Disk Warrior) to check out the Disk and System.
But .. the CD Tray remains closed now. So - I hope this gets you all back in business.

  • IBook (Dual USB) Sound Problem

    The item:
    iBook Dual USB, 800MHz, 32 VRAM, CD-ROM,
partitioned HD with OS 9.2.2 & Tiger.
I have installed OS 9.2.2 on the smaller partition via FireWire using Apple's OS 9.2.1 install CD + OS 9.2.2 Updater from Apple's website.
Sound works perfectly in OS X environment.
The problem - OS 9 environment (Booted into OS9)
Great 'Bong" when it boots - BUT - NO SOUND after that. None. Silence. No System sounds. No AOL login sound. No iTunes sound.
All 'sound' related settings are properly adjusted. Nothing is 'muted'. Platinum System sounds are selected. Finder menu blinks to indicate that there should be a noise - but all is deadly silent.
Control Strip Sound menu slider is almost at bottom. Adjusting it UP results in menu blink - and it returns to it previous position.
Sound volumne slider in Sound Control Panel 'snaps' back to the far left when moved to the right.
Sound Control Panel / Input menu shows the following warning:
"The settings for the sound input source cannot be adjusted becasue the device is in use by another application."
I have no other sound-related software installed. No device using the sound port is present. It's a 'naked' OS 9.2.2 install + AOL 5. It acted the same way BEFORE I installed AOL.
What must I do to make this little beauty make the proper sounds, please... ?
Your successfull suggestion will have me singing your praises.

  • My cd tray will not open

My cd tray will not open the only way I can open it is by using the terminal commands "drutil open" and "drutil close"

Is there a disc in the drive?
Are you saying depressing (for several seconds) the F12 key does not open the drive?
You can add an Eject Item to the Menu Bar
        1.     Open a Finder window  and navigate to /System/Library/Core Services/ Menu Extras.
        2.     Double-click the Eject.menu item  in the Menu Extras folder.
The Eject menu item will be added to your Mac’s menu bar. It will have the eject icon, which is a chevron with a line below it. If you click on the Eject menu item, it will display all of the CD/DVD drives attached to your Mac, and provide the option to ‘Open’ or ‘Close’ each drive, depending on its current state.

  • Mail won't display the viewer window, and it will not close (force quit does not show in menu bar).  Can't shut down to reboot because the open mail program prevents it.   Any advice?

Mail does not show the viewer window even when new viewer window is cliced.  I tried to close mail and reopen, but it will not close, and force quit option does not appear in window bar.   I tried to shut down the computer and reboot, but it cannot close because of open mail program it says.    Help!

Many thanks.  Once I was able to close mail, it reopened and behaved quite normally.  Thank you.  I'll remember the option quit for force quite!

  • The first tab will not close, and often does not load all of a page.

When I open firefox, the first tab always has 'search bookmarks and history' in the address bar, instead of the url of my homepage, and it will not close.

While trying to figure out a solution, I removed my themes and I closed the tabs I could, then clicked on the new tab button, doing so changed my original tab into an (Untitled) tab and created a new (Untitled) tab. I then found I couldn't close either tab, I clicked on new tab again, got a third (Untitled) tab, which again I couldn't close. I then closed Firefox choosing not to save. This appears to have fixed the problem; however I do not know which of the above action(s) resolved it.

  • My dad has a brand new iMac. If he quits an app, this window closes, but the app won't finish shutting down, Force quitting does not work.  Once another app is opened, it will not close either.  Now none of the apps are responding. Any ideas?

My dad has a brand new iMac. If he quits an app, this window closes, but the app won't finish shutting down, Force quitting does not work.  Once another app is opened, it will not close either.  Now none of the apps on the dock are responding. I asked him to click on the apple, and drop down to "About this Mac", but that wouldn't open either. Any ideas?  If I was at his house, I would call Apple Care in a heartbeat, but am home with my sick daughter,,,  Thanks!

For starters, have him open Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, select the volume (the indented listing) and Verify Disk. If it reports any problems, have him try a Safe Boot by holding the Shift key at startup. This boot will take much longer than usual. It's checking and trying to repair the drive directory, if possible. Once in Safe Boot, have him repair Permissions.
For other Disk repair remedies see
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
Also, have him try a PRAM Reset. At the startup chime, hold down CMD-Option-P-R together, listen for two more chimes, total three, then let go to finish booting.
Also, is he running any AV? If so, have him uninstall it. It might be responsible for this behavior. (There are no viruses for OS X.)

  • Facetime window will not close. (iPhone 6 iOS 8.1.3)

Recently and quite frequently, after a FaceTime call has ended the window will not close out to the normal FaceTime call history screen. Even when I double tap the home button to close out apps, the FaceTime window, still showing my live face and "call with whomever as ended or ending" (it switches between ended and ending when clicking back on the window) will not swipe closed; it just moves up and right back down. I can't even swipe it closed during a live FaceTime as I could before. The only way I've been able to close out the FaceTime app is to power down the phone then turn it back on.
Anyone else experience this? Any suggestions?

    Hello nelly_eastside,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your FaceTime application is not fully closing after a call. In this situation, I would recommend forcing the application to close and then resetting your iPhone. To complete these steps, please follow the instructions in the attached articles. Please let me know if the issue continues.
Force an app to close in iOS - Apple Support
Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
    Have a great day,

  • Hard Drive Tray will not fit after attaching hard drive

    (From Davin Oishi)
Issue: After installing the hard  drive onto the hard drive tray, the tray will not longer fit into the  Smart Storage hard disk drive slot.
Using hard drive tray  screws from the legacy NSS2000, NSS3000, NSS4000, or NSS6000 may  encounter this issue.
Resolution: Be sure to use the hard drive  screws that are supplied with your Smart Storage device.  Smart Storage  ships with screws for both 3.5" SATA drives and 2.5" SATA drives.

If they are still on your Mac's drive then you should be able to add them back into iTunes via File > Add To Library

  • On my canon powershot A3300IS the lense is stuck in the extended position and will not close

I have a canon powershot A3300 IS  the lense is stuck in the extended position and will not close. How can I fix this myself?

    Forneypamela,
Please remove the battery from the camera for a few minutes.  Then, put the battery back in the camera and power it on again.  If the lens is still stuck in the extended position, the camera is going to need service.  I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
To start your repair process, you'll need to complete a Repair Request on our website.
If the camera is more than a year old, you may participate in the Canon Loyalty Program instead.  The Canon Loyalty Program option allows you to replace your current camera for a discounted fee, plus shipping.  The unit offered through this program carries a 90 day warranty.  The original non-functioning camera would then be returned to Canon USA for recycling using a prepaid shipping label that would be provided.
If you would like to take part in this option, please call our Sales Department at (800) OK CANON (800-652-2666) seven days a week, 8am to Midnight.  Let them know you have been working with online support and the Canon Loyalty Program was offered.  Be sure to have your serial number for your camera at the time of your call.
If this is a time sensitive-matter, additional support options are available at Contact Us.
