Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
Windows 7
Vista
Check if the drive is now working.
If the drive is not working, from the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Click to open the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.  Right click on the first channel and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When uninstalled repeat the process for each channel.  Also if an ATA controller is listed, right click and uninstall this, again not deleting drivers if asked. Then open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.
Reboot the PC and let Windows reinstall the devices.  Check the drive again.
If it still isn't working, run the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below again.
Windows 7
Vista
Next, from the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.

  • When connected via USB, my Ipod Classic 160GB mounts as a disc drive, then changes to a white drive.  When iTunes automatically opens, it crashes trying to mount and/ or sync.  When it times out, my only choice is to restore, but that doesn't fix problem.

I'm running OS 10.6.8 on my 3.06 GHz iMac Intel Core 2 Duo.   I recently upgraded to iTunes 10.5.2.  I'm not sure when the trouble started but I attempted a restore when the iPod would not play correctly.  It would start to play a file and get stuck on 0 seconds.  If I put the iPod on shufle, it will stall on 0 seconds for 15 seconds or so and then move on to the next track and stall again and so on.   Seemingly randomly, it will play a few tracks but eventually start skipping again.  This will continue until the battery is depleted which is fairly quick since the drive is constantly spinning.
My 160GB iPod Classic after restore attempts now is up to date with 2.0.4. and of course, nothing works as it should and I would say the skipping issue is worse than ever.
When I connect with any of three USB connectors, the iPod mounts to the desktop as a grey/silver disk drive picon exactly like the Macintosh HD picon.   Then Finder will stall for a few minutes- spinning pinwheel.  Somehow, the dock is never affected and I am able to open other applications like Safari or tab through open windows- just no action on the desktop.  Eventually, iTunes automatically opens and Finder becomes responsive again.  At this point the grey drive picon on the desktop becomes a white drive mount picon, but the iPod does not mount in iTunes, yet.  At some point, the iPod attempts to sync, iTunes crashes with the spinning pinwheel and eventually times out and I am prompted to restore the iPod again.  Once restored,  the iPod properly mounts under devices in iTunes and, as I have done this several times, even occasionally changes to the regular iPod picon on the desktop.
I have restored several times going as far a completely deleting iTunes from my iMac, downloading the latest directly from Apple.com, and attempting to restore again, but to no avail.
I have even used the disk utility to verify and/or repair my Macintosh HD and iPod.
It seems lots of folks are going through this ordeal.  Has anyone had any success in fixing the issue, even if only temporarily?

one more detail, after a restore, when I attempt to reload music to the ipod, if I try and move, say, 20 files, the transfer seems to work as it should but then stalls on the last file.  Eventually, the status will change to "Updates Files on (my ipod)" a and suggests the iPod is syncing  even though I have the auto sync feature turned off.
This process eventually works itself out, and seems to take longer relative to the number of files I attempt to transfer.   Once done, howver, if I try and eject and dismount the iPod, iTunes stalls with the spinning pinwheel and I am warned that the iPod is syncing again with the spinning candy cane status bar.     Eventually thisd works itself out and the iPod dismounts from iTunes and the desktop and eventually the iPod is free to disconnect.
Then if I try and play the music I just transfered, the iPod says there is no music loaded.
    Ideas?

  • Make USB flash drive unreadable

I want to make my USB flash drive unreadable, but I don't know how to do it. I can only find threads about problems with unreadable drives, but I don't have a problem, I want to make it unreadable. Is there a way to do it (like OS X can't read NTFS, but I want that with HFS+ for a specific flash drive too).

Actually, Mac OS X can read NTFS.  So I'm not at all sure what you're trying to do.  Are you trying to encrypt a drive, or destroy the data on a drive, or make it so that Windows users can't read it, or make it so that Mac users can't read it, or make it read-only (like NTFS on a Mac)?  Or something else entirely?

  • Flash Drive Unreadable - HELP PLEASE!!

"The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." Story of my life.
I have a 32gb Micro Center brand flash drive. It's completely full of pictures, videos, documents, and files. Every time I stick it into my Macbook Pro, it tells me its unreadable. It gives me three options: Initialize, Ignore, Eject. I don't want to mess around with anything until I know what's wrong and what I should do. I've tried putting my flash drive into PCs, but it's still unreadable. I always remove my devices safely so I'm not sure what the problem is. The flash drive is in excellent condition. Maybe if anyone knows how to talk me through the Initialize option, that'd be helpful, cause frankly, I don't know much about softwares and such.
I've heard of people sending out there flash drives and getting them fixed. Is this an options? I'd only do it if it was guaranteed to work without losing any files. Is there anyway I can troubleshoot it at home and fix this?
I will be checking this post often to reply to any questions or answers. It's urgent that I access my flash drive!

Initializing it will format it and you will definitely lose everything if it isn't lost already.
Not being readable on either a PC or Mac is a bad sign.
It may be worth taking it into MicroCenter and see if they have any ideas. Most recovery services are rather expensive and Google is your friend in finding such a service.

  • [SOLVED] - USB Pen Drive Unreadable

I used gparted to create 3 Primary Partitins on my 2GB Kingston Pen Drive. After that I used the following command to change the label of one of the partitions:
    mkfs.ext3 -L Grub2 /dec/sdb3
After this the pen drive ha become unreadable. It gets listed as /dev/sdb but the partitions do not. The errors given by various programs are listed below:

  • External Drive Unreadable

I have a 1TB Seagate freeagent goflex which until yesterday worked fine (using a Mac). now when i plug it in i get the error message saying it is unreadable. In disk utility the drive shows up but no volumes are listed under it and i dont have the option to verify or repair. i tried several recovery appllications and when i finally gave up trying to fix the problem that way and attempted to erase the drive i got a message saying the drive can not be opened. hoping someone has had a similar problem. Ive had drives mess up before but disk utility has always solved problem.

Repairing permissions isn't the same as verifying the hard disk or external for errors. Read here

Sometimes a drive isn't readable because the permissions aren't correct.
Also, you should use Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions before and after all software installs.

  • Hard drive unreadable after Security update

I installed the latest security update on my intel imac today and upon restart received the question mark folder icon. When restarting from the disc, it will not let me even verify the drive. AppleCare was unable to help. Any ideas? Is it just dead? Is data recovery even a possibility here?

"It will not let me verify the drive" means that I am unable to verify the drive.
Today, I installed the security update on my 24" intel imac, that I've owned since April. I restarted the machine. Up came the folder icon with the question mark. I restarted a second time and the same thing occurred. I then inserted the installer disc that came with the computer and I was able to start up the computer that way. Using the Disc Utility, I attempted to verify or repair the hard drive, but all those options were ghosted ("it will not let me verify the hard drive") Also, while there, I saw that the hard drive partitions were not recognized: there were two partitions (1: 500GB; 2: 198GB) but now it was registering a single drive at 698GB of 750.
I then called Apple support. We reset the PRAM. We did a hard drive test (restart holding "d") and that test produced no error. We then tried unplugging all peripherals, including the power supply, and letting it sit for a few moments. The imac restarted to the same results. Finally, the tech suggested attempting an archive install, which was not available as an option. Further, the install disc did not detect an available hard drive for installation, so the option to reinstall the OS was not an option, either.
The tech said my only option is to take it in for service, leaving me unable to work for four to five days (if I'm lucky), as they won't get to it until Monday, and even then they're backed up.

  • Backup drive unreadable

My backup drive is not showing up on my iMac. I have tryed turning it on and off and it still won't come up. However when i turn the backup drive back on it says. "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computor" it gives me the options of "Initialize", "Ignore" and "Eject". The last time it was backed up was on the "4 of may 2014". What can i do to fix this or a suggestion would be great.
    Thanks for your help.

Yes. It worked fine before the format is MAC OS Extended (journaled). I know how to reformat it but won't that erase everything on it?

  • External Drive unreadable when plugged in while Leo is running.

I believe some '.xxxxx' files that Leopard placed in my external drive might be causing a problem.
Plugging in my external hard drive while Leo 10.5.6 is running does not mount the drive. Whe rebooted with the same drive plugged in, the drive is now mounted. • External Hard Drive Unreadable After Carbon Copy Cloner Backup

I am using a Maxtor OneTouch III Media external drive. I had formatted it to be read/writeable from Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, and had been reading and writing files fine. Then I did a system backup to the external drive with Carbon Copy Cloner. Now when I plug the drive into the USB port, it says "the disk you inserted is not readable by this computer." I am guessing that Carbon Copy Cloner may have messed with the file system format. I had some pretty important files on there and would like to retrieve them, so I'd prefer not to reformat.
Disk Utility shows this information for the drive:
Name : Maxtor OneTouch III Media
    Type : Disk
    Disk Identifier : disk1
Media Name : Maxtor OneTouch III Media
    Media Type : Generic
    Connection Bus : USB
    Connection Type : External
    USB Serial Number : RA09E5XC
    Writable : Yes
    Ejectable : Yes
Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed : No
    Location : External
    Total Capacity : 149.1 GB (160,041,885,696 Bytes)
    S.M.A.R.T. Status : Not Supported
    Disk Number : 1
    Partition Number : 0
    Also, Partition Scheme : Unformatted
I know that the drive had a name (besides the generic "Maxtor OneTouch III Media) before I did anything with Carbon Copy Cloner. Is my data already gone?

Hi , and a warm welcome to the forums!
I think the problem is more the One-touch, they can't boot PPC Macs even via Firewire.
I think you'll have to Reformat it again... did you maybe use GUID Partition Scheme the first time?
See this, except for the GUID part...

  • Hard drive not recognized after lion upgrade

My hard drive WD "My Book Studio Edition 1TB" mounts and unmounts non stop. Firewire or UBS is the same. Also with a new firmware of the disk and after a formatting. The file system is HFS+ journaled. My hardware is an iMac early 2009 24". No problems with all the other OS.
    What's happen with Lion, Apple?

    Hey Yelghoul,
Make sure that the drive does not have the WD encryption stuff on it. That causes the Mac to render the drive unreadable and useless. Use another computer to remove the software and any passwords on it. Then plug the drive back in. If there are no files on it, simply open "Disk Utility" under "Utilities" to reformat the drive to make it usable with Lion or other computers.
    Best of luck,

  • When connected to NETGEAR WNR1000, I can't remotely access Airport Extreme attached hard drive.

I have a hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme at home and I am staying at a friend's place where I am connecting to the Internet via a NETGEAR WNR1000 router (which is routing a broadband-cable connection from Comcast Xfinity).
When I am connected directly to the cable modem, the Airport Extreme's drives shows up in my Finder but when I'm connected via the NETGEAR router it doesn't show up.
There must be some setting in the NETGEAR router that is blocking access but I've not got clue one what setting I need to adjust or change on the router.
    Could someone please advise me?

I checked the NETGEAR router settings and it was not configured to block any services or sites. I did as you advised and set up Port Mapping/Forwarding from 548 to the IP assigned to my Mac but nothing showed up in the Finder (no Shared Devices etc).
I then connected directly to the cable modem via ethernet and Shared Devices showed up in my Finder window with my Airport Extreme. I connected to one of the drives connected to the AEBSn, then unplugged the ethernet and connected the NETGEAR back to the cable modem and thus my MacBook Pro was connected via WiFi to the NETGEAR router and to the Internet.
Shared Devices disappeared from my Finder window, BUT the HD I had connected to remained connected. It was listed under my MacBook Pro's name (3rd item after the local HD, "Network"). The icon is a blue and white drive with the WiFi logo on it.
I verified that I could access the files on this remotely connected drive and did a Get Info and in the window that popped up it said "Server: afp://MilkBar._afpovertcp._tcp.malckwan.members.mac.com/Untitled%2001".
I tried to use the Connect To (Cmd-K) to connect to another drive attached to the AEBSn (Untitled%2002) using the same formatted address but could not connect.
PS. I did verify that I was mapping Port 548 to the current IP assigned to the MacBook Pro.

  • HP Compaq dc7800 bios limit on hard drive size

I have a dc7800 which has the latest bios update v1.32, and I have been using it with a 750gb boot drive and a 1.5tb second drive for some time. I recently bought a 3tb drive to replace the 1.5tb drive. When I connected it to the onboard SATA connector and booted up, the BIOS only reported finding an 800gb drive.  Thinking this might be a defective drive, I went to Fry's and traded it for another of the same type and size. Same result when I installed it. Both drives were WD Red drives, and I have no clue what the problem is. A 1tb WD White drive was recognized without problem, so I wonder if there is a dc7800 BIOS limitation on the drive size. Anybody have an idea what that limitation might be?
    Thanks,
    Michael

  • Drive Module Removal

This may be a stupid question, but this seems like a very un-Apple like behavior to me...
I have an Xserve G5 with 3 x 250Gb drives in a RAID 5 configuration using the PCI RAID card. With the security lock engaged, if I even push on one of the drive module coverplates (i.e. so that the 'handle' pops out) without removing the drive, it completely trashes the RAID, sets off the audible alarm, etc. Note that I never actually remove the drive, and I can't since the security lock is engaged. But just popping out the handle and then pushing it back in again results in the RAID having to go through a complete rebuild sequence which takes hours.
    Is this normal?

We have the same setup. Most of what you are saying is normal.
In a 3 drive RAID 5 configuration if 1 drive becomes disengaged it should not destroy the whole RAID. It just makes the 1 drive unreadable by the RAID. The data on the RAID should still be accessible and usable, but I would avoid making too many changes during the rebuild. Too many changes during a rebuild could extend the rebuild time. However you can only lose 1 drive in a 3 drive RAID 5 configuration and still rebuild the RAID. If you lose 2 drives the RAID will be completely destroyed. We have also ran into problems with Drive 0 in the RAID. If the server gets rebooted during the rebuild of Drive 0 it may not reboot properlly and may cause the RAID to be destroyed which would mean a reinstall and restore from backup. So be careful when rebuilding Drive 0.
If you open Terminal and go to the man pages for megaraid you can silence the alarm (megaraid -alarm -silence). This will at least make the procedure less painful since it takes a 250 GB drive a minimum of 4 hours to rebuild depending on the amount of data in the RAID. The RAID alarm will sound if a drive fails too even if it is not disengaged so it is nice to know how to silence the alarm and find out which drive failed through the megaraid tools.
There is very good documentation on the Apple Server Support page
    http://images.apple.com/server/pdfs/UsingHardwareRAID.pdf
    Happy RAIDing

  • Compiling a driver, need assistance on kernel source configuration

    Hello BBS.
I am compiling a module for the Asus PCE N53 wireless pci-e card. I have obtained the driver source, and followed the instructions, and have gotten to the point where I need assistance. The instructions requires the kernel source, i have successfully obtained and configured it using the Command line prompt, except for one feature. I need to enable the intel IPW2200 driver code in the kernel source for this driver. What procedure do I follow to enable it?

    > I know in face value, that my request may seem odd. I just need to use the source of the kernel, not a new kernel... I have found that what I am requesting... will fix the problem, based on a Gentoo solution: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-93 … art-0.html. Needing to know how to configure the kernel source to enable the intel driver still stands. The source I am using is the latest arch kernel source.
