CDAQ module for high speed pulse counting

I need to know a USB module which can be used for pulse counting. The pulses are generated from an encoder attached with an stepper motor. It generates 15 pulses per step.Pulse amplitude is 0 to 5V. I am using a compact DAQ system (ni 9178).

The counters are on the cDAQ chassis backplane (there are 4 of them on the 9178).  So, in order to use an external signal with the counters you would need a way to route the signal to the backplane.  Your available options are:
1.  Any digital I/O module with 8 or less lines on it (some modules are input-only or output-only--input modules can be used for counter input tasks only, output modules can be used for counter output tasks only).  Modules with over 8 lines transfer the data serially to the chassis backplane and so do not support routing signals through to the counters.
2.  The 2 PFI lines on the 9178 (I should have mentioned this earlier, this might be a good option for you to route your encoder pulses without having to purchase an additional module if you only need 2 inputs--that is, no Z index signal).  The bandwidth on the chassis PFI lines is lower than that of the 9401 and 9402, I believe the chassis PFI lines should take signals up to ~1 MHz.
3.  An analog module with triggering capabilities (at this time only the 9205 and 9206) can route a digital signal (the 9205 and 9206 have a PFI line) or an "analog comparison event" (see my post here) to the counter terminals.
In case 1 above, you configure this by selecting the counter using the module's name (e.g. "cDAQ1Mod2/ctr0").  Default input terminals will be used (check the device pinouts for your module in Measurement and Automation Explorer) or you can select which terminals to use for your inputs using a DAQmx channel property node.
In cases 2 and 3, you would need to select the counter as the internal backplane counter (e.g. "cDAQ1/_ctr0").  You will need to select which terminal your signal is coming from (since the internal backplane counter does not have default terminals.  This same method can be used to count internal signals (e.g. sample clocks, counter outputs, etc.) without having to use any of the 3 routing options mentioned above.

  • I need to count intermittent high speed pulses from an outside source with cFP-CTR-502 and labview.

I need to count intermittent high speed pulses from an outside source with cFP-CTR-502 and Labview 8.2 . I've found example code for generating pulses and creating intricate count setups but no straightforward examples of a simple counter. Any suggestions?

    Hello tinfish,
I could not find a simple example that implements simple counting either, but it should be straightforward enough for us to try. Do you have the CTR module configured properly in MAX? If so, can you monitor the channels on your CTR 502 for input? Try connecting a square wave or some other digital pulse to the terminal to test the functionality of the counter module first (before programming). If you monitor the input channels with somethign connected you should see the count increment each time it sees a rising edge (assuming default configuration).
Once you've verified that everything works in MAX, you can set up your CTR module in a LV 8.2 project. If you need help with this, refer to the help document (look in the "Configuring FieldPoint in LabVIEW" section):
    C:\Program Files\National Instruments\FieldPoint\documentation\Online Help\fplv.chm
You should be able to just read a channel tag from your CTR 502 using an FP Read VI. (Simply drag the channel from your project onto the block diagram). Since counting is the default behavior of the 502, there is no special programming involved to make it work.
I hope this helps -- if it's too high-level we can talk details about specific questions you have.  Have a good one!

I to have been having the same problem for months and I get ABSOLUTELY no where when I contact customer service.  I have tried the reboot and everything else.  I am really considering switching carriers at this point.  I have even pulled out the old blue ethernet cord to try and accomplish SOMETHING.  This is ridiculous.  I to pay a high cost for this service and NEVER seem to get it bit YET, Comcast wants their payment monthly!!!cpakker wrote:

  • High speed event counting

I am looking to count events where an event is defined by 1 ttl pulse of 30ns (A newer device allows for 3V 9ns)  I prevoiusly used the6602 but am looking to make a standalone singleboard rio application.  When talking to some engineers this I was told that this was possible, but looking at the spect there needs to be a 100ns min pulse width.  Are there any work arounds?  Is it possible to add sme chip as a prescalar to the input (divide by 10 highspeed counter?)  I am stuck and am ready to meke some hardware decisions.

As I am not certain if a moderator can move a post, the best way would probably be to re-post the question on your desired board. Be sure to post a link here to the new discussion. You generally want to avoid double-posting, but as long as it is clear that this discussion was moved to another place, most people will forgive you.
Now, assuming you have not posted elsewhere, I will comment on your issue. The sbRIO's have IO pins that allow you to connect right into the FPGA. As you have found, the manual guarantees a 10 MHz rate and states you can get a bit faster if you are acquiring a single 3.3 V signal.
To get even faster, you may have a few options.
Use a deserializer to break up one high speed signal into multiple slower signals.
A similar idea which will not require external hardware, but maybe a bit more programming is to read the same channel on several inputs with slightly staggered start times. This post discusses the idea a bit more.
Good luck, let us know your thoughts and how it turns out.

  • Help! data manipulation for high speed streaming to disk from multiple boards and multiple channels

I am using Labview 7.1 and have been trying to capture data from 12 channels simutaneously sampled at 2MS/s each and streaming to disk for up to a minute or more.  The hardware I am using is 2 x PXI 6133 S series boards with a MXI4 link to a Pentium D 2.8 Ghz machine with 2Gb ram.   I have 2 sata drives set up in a raid 0 configuration which should give me hard disk write speed faster or equal to the MXI-4 transfer speed.
I have first started off by using the example code "multi device sync - analog input- cont acquisition" which has enabled me to sync the two boards and sample at the required speed.
To stream the data to disk, I have first merged the data from each board  together to save it to one file.  I have tried using the storage vi's but I end up with a Daqmx read error (trying to read data that is no longer available).  I have played around with the read data size to the point that I either get a insufficient memory error, or I get the "trying to read data that is no longer available"  error.  I have also tried using the file IO blocks with some success and have found that I have been able to stream to disk only if I configure the daqmx read block to output the data in "raw 1D I16" format and plugging it into the file-write block.  In doing this, I have noticed that using  multiple channels on one daqmx read task, I will get all the channels in one 1D array rather than a 2D array organized by channels.  This makes it messy to read at the end of this, and I also don't want to write another vi to separate the channels, due to the high chance of getting the data mixed or messed up if I happen to change the number of channels on a board
Is there a cleaner way of streaming this data to disk and keeping the channel data separated from each other?, and/or is there a better way to capture and handle the data I need?
I have attached the vi which I have got to consistantly work streaming to disk using the raw 1D I16 format.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

    Hi,
    i can suggest following
Refer to an example VI called as "High speed data logger.VI"  in conjunction with "High Speed data logger reader.vi" in Labview examples. Alhrough the logger might be in Tradiditional Daq format, it can be quite easily converted to Daq Mx format to store data in Binary (I32 format) . I have used this for many of my applications and i have found that the data retrieved does not have any "messups".
Why not keep a seperate file for each card? This way, you do not have to load your application with extra process. You only have to acquire and save. After saving in Binbary format, you can retrive it offline, convert it to ascii format and merge the data files of various cards to get one consolidated ascii data file.
    hope this helps

  • Been Waiting for High Speed For 2 years

I was hoping there may be someone here on the forum that may live in our area that can tell us if they have heard anything concerning high speed finally coming to our area.  It is Petersburg PA 16669....It is a rural area.  We have submitted petitions and it has been 2 years with no word.  I have written a letter to Verizon Imaging but get no response. If you are from my area or are knowledgeable in High Speed It would be great to hear.
    Thanks

Whenever I try to check for highspeed availabillity using my address, I get two results for my address, but the cities are not correct. The addresses verizon offers have the same street address though which makes me doubt that these are even valid addresses. I know where the two other towns are that come up and each is around 20 miles from where I live.

  • Monthly charge for High speed internet vacation period (suspension)

I talked to two agents regarding with temporarily suspending my high speed internet service, and I just found out I was getting charged monthly $10 during the suspension periold, which the two agents never mentioned.
Why did I get the wrong information from the 2 agents even though I made sure with them couple of times I will not be charged during the suspension on the phone. Now I am disconnecting verizon internet service. And I will disconnect my verizon phone service with my wife next year when the contact is over.
One more thing, I can not file complaint anywhere about this issue in the verizon website, which I found out they made it impossible in their website. Other verizon users mentioned it in the forum. There is no such thing about filing complaint in their company. Good luck.
    Good bye verizon kingdom.

Your issue has been escalated to a Verizon agent. Before the agent can begin assisting you, they will need to collect further information from you.
Please go to your profile page for the forum, and look in the middle, right at the top where you will find an area titled "My Support Cases". You can reach your profile page by clicking on your name beside your post, or at the top left of this page underneath the title of the board.
Under “My Support Cases” you will find a link to the private board where you and the agent may exchange information. This should be checked on a frequent basis as the agent may be waiting for information from you before they can proceed with any actions.

  • Options for high speed internet connection. . .anyone tried Directv?

Just relocated to a black hole of communications. . . Sprint telephone provider does not provide high speed service in my area. Town about 10 miles away has wireless access but not good for me. . . have new intel 20" Imac and now using apple external modem. . .good connection with aol but slow and would like to do better. I have Directv which is persistently touting their internet service. Anyone have experience with that? What are my other options, if any?

I have had DirecWay (soon to be HughesNet) for a year. I have the Pro account ($69/mo) with 1000/200 kb/s D/U and a 350MB download bucket which refills at 56 kb/s. That is about 350 MB per 16 hour period. It has been reliable. Heavy snow will stop like with DirecTV, but with dish low enough to sweep the snow off corrects this. Speeds vary, but is always better than dial-up. We had 18.8 kb/s on a very good day with dial-up.
However! The latency is high, 700-900ms. This delay is annoying, it takes a few seconds before your page come up. "Twitch" games don't play well. Other than that it is great.
I kept waiting for DSL or anything but it never came. My only regret is that I should have gotten it sooner.

  • Test stand design for high speed brushless dc servo motor efficiency testing

We are in the process of designing two test stands around the brushless dc servo motor in the attached specifications.  The first we would like to operate using Labview and a PXI-7352 controller.  The second will be a real time configuration.  The motor will need to run in the 25-50,000 RPM range.  We want to bring the hall sensors back to the controller and do PID and other control there.  The sinusoidal commutation from the controller would then go to an as yet unselected servo amplifier.  When the motor is under test we want to be able to measure accurately the power that is being used by the motor - not the motor and controller / amplifier.
Can the PXI-7353 handle this motor speed range?
Will Labview and the PID toolkit be sufficient software to program the first test stand?
Any example VI's available for this approach (I could not locate any)?
What is the appropriate controller for a real time system?
What is the best way to instrument the motor to determine power required at a given test point?
Any suggestion on a servo amplifier?
    Thanks in advance,
    David

    Mr. Zaatari,
As you will note, there are six questions posted above.  As you also know, I have been waiting for your response for 5 days and decided to use this alternate method in hope of getting my questions answered.  As you further know you have not answered these questions.   It is a shame that you will  not post your "answers" here so that the rest of this wonderful NI community might have the benefit of your knowledge as well.
I will respond further to you by email.

  • Need suggestions for high speed, slow motion, sporting event to DVD

In a recent video shoot I've trimmed down a lot of video into several slow motion clips of 15%, 20% and 25%. They were shot at 1/500 on a GL-1 and "modified" speedwise in FCE without frame blending. In the past I've had problems with shadows in slow motion with frame blending on so it was turned off this time. As a full sized QT video everything looks just fine.
Being satisfied the video looked well I put it to DVDSP. When I worked it through in DVDSP (using all default settings)and printed the video I ended up with a horror show of bodies which moved back and forth and looking nothing like the full size QT quality clip. Bodies moved in one direction, the camera opposite them and at times the zoom working against both and it ended up looking like people moving backwards then forward and once in a while the shadows I'd hoped to get rid of.
I will assume that not blending did some of the damage, but it appears that the further the action is away (presumabley the camera movement is minimized compared to the movement of the players) it looks almost viewable, but on anything close the movement appears as if it is not always moving forward.
I will have to experiment, obviously, but I was hoping for a starting point. As an aside I exported the FCE scratch QT file to camera and reimported it to FCE as one large block, the same result on the DVD occured despite the tape looking excellent and the full sized QT file looking just fine also.
I guess the averaging of the compression comes into play, so what would be a way to tweak it to what I want instead of what's easiest for the program?
Thanks in advance for any idea!
    Chuck

What format did you shoot? HDV? if so, you may be seein field-reversal artifacts.
Frame blending is kind of a misnomer as far as slomo in FCE and FCP go.
Are you using a pre-FCS version of DVDSP? why are you using FCE?
I've found one of the best ways to get slomotion is to up the frame rate using compressor with the frame controls turned on, then reconform back to your native frame rate with Cinema Tools. It's a bit of a workflow quagmire, but the results look good.

  • Measure high speed duty cycle in labview

    Hello.
I'm trying to do semi-period measure for high frequency (up to around 200KHz).
i need to know an exact duty cycle and frequency of the signal.
all the examples i could find worked fine for low freq. (up to 50KHz) but dont match for high speed.
for now i'm using the M series 6259 and the new X series 6353 DAQ.
is there a solution for high speed measure?

    Hi jackedi
Have you tried the examples in the Example Finder?  You can find the Example Finder at Help >> Find Examples.  When this opens, double click Hardware Input and Output >> DAQmx >>  Counter Measurements >> Meas Semi-Period.  This should measure your semi period.  On the 6353, the counters run at 100 MHz, so you should be able to get good resolution of a 200 kHz signal.

  • Digital start trigger and high speed camera

Is there any particular option or way available in LabVIEW to initiate the data acquisition and high speed camera using a digital start trigger? If yes, shall I create a task for high speed camera and then synchronize it with the other tasks?
    Kind Regards,

    Hi Helen19411,
The way to trigger data acquisition in LabVIEW is to use the 'DAQmx Start Trigger VI'. To set this up I recommend taking a look at this example:
    http://www.ni.com/example/25282/en/
Without any information about the high speed camera you are using, I can't give much advice. If the device is viewable in MAX then you may be able to create a task, and so long as you synchronise both channels in your code, the digital trigger should activate both events.
