CDE desktop 1.1 on 2.5.1

Hello
I'm attempting to install CDE on Solaris 2.5.1 on an x86, but there seems to be an error in the installation script - install-cde. the error from the shell is "unexpected "else": line 2343". I checked the script, and the function LoadLocale seems to have been muffed. A portion of a case statement is repeated a few times and then the script just seems to end abruptly. this is stuff from 1995, around August I think.
Do you have any reference to this problem?
thanks,
John

I found this document on SUN's internal database. Based on that the
CDE 1.1 is an internal version, and should not be used by customer.
You may want to try CDE 1.0.1 for your 2.5.1 system.
Hope this helps. Thx.
====
SYNOPSIS: CDE versions and Solaris versions
DETAIL DESCRIPTION:
CDE version status and version of Solaris that supports it
CDE 1.0 no longer supported.
CDE 1.0.1 only supported on Solaris 2.4 and Solaris 2.5.
It will most likely work okay with Solaris 2.5.1, for
example, if you had CDE 1.0.1 and just upgraded OS to 2.5.1
or if you are doing a remote mount from a Solaris 2.5 system.
However, this is not supported, ie. you can't escalate an
issue for Solaris 2.5.1 and CDE 1.0.1.
CDE 1.0.2 supported on Solaris 2 (version 2.4 or later) operating
environment (from CDE distribution page).Bundled
with Solaris 2.5.1.
CDE 1.1 This will not be released to customers. It is for internal
use only. And it will really only be supported on Solaris
2.5.1 as far as patches are concerned.
CDE 1.2          bundled with Solaris 2.6 and only supported on 2.6. Cannot
be used with any other OS release. And you cannot use
earlier versions of CDE with Solaris 2.6.
Solaris Desktop "early-access release of CDE 1.3." Contains many features
Extension 1.0 of CDE 1.3, but is not true CDE 1.3. May be used with
(SDX, SDE, Solaris 2.6, but the user runs the risk of having problems
SolarEZ) when applying CDE 1.2 patches to SDE packages. Not
supported for any version of Solaris except 2.6.
CDE 1.3 bundled with Solaris 7 and only supported on Solaris 7.
Cannot be used with any other OS release. And you cannot
use earlier versions of CDE with Solaris 7.

  • Messages to /dev/sysmsg and /dev/console are displayed on the CDE Desktop

I noticed that after reboots any message sent to /dev/sysmsg or /dev/console is displayed to the CDE Desktop (wallpaper). After I log out then log back in the problem disappears. This happens in global zones only and not in a non-global (local) zone.
(the only service I see with "svcs -xv" is the Print Service)
To repeat the problem I have to do the following:
    1. Reboot (init 6)
    2. Login to the CDE as a user.
    3. Open an Xterm window, and in the windows, "su" to root
    4. Observe a "su on ..." message on the CDE desktop in big white "OBP" looking mono-spaced text.
    5. Log out of the CDE
    6. Login to the CDE as a user.
    7. Open an Xterm window, and in the windows, "su" to root
    8. Problem has disappeared, no more logging of console like messages to the CDE desktop.
As well, if I do something like this after I reboot, and on 1st log in:
    echo "Hi there" > /dev/console
    echo "Another Hello" > dev/sysmsg
I'll see both messages print to the Desktop of the CDE. If I log out and log back in, I will no longer see this kind of behavior.
    My Hardware: Sun Netra CP3260
My Software: Sun Solaris 10 5/08 Update 5 with 137137-09
    Additional info:
/etc/syslog.conf - does have a line that directs some output to /dev/sysmsg
    /etc/default/su - does list: CONSOLE=/dev/console
I did comment out the above two lines in my syslog.conf and /etc/default/su, and the behavior goes away, however this is a workaround and not a fix of the issue.
    Any ideas?

Yes, I know this is an old post, but I’m trying to clean them up.
Without your PowerShell script is will be impossible for anyone to answer this.

  • Configuring CDE desktop to allow true-colour and flashing

I'm attempting to set up Micromuse's Netcool product for a customer. Netcool is running on a separate Sun server and the user's desktop machine (that they will use to view Netcool event lists) is a Sun Blade 150.
We need to configure the desktop machine to allow for flashing events in the event list and also we need to change some of the event colours. When I start the Netcool desktop client s/w I get error messages about Flashing functionality not being available and something about it being unable to map colours and using Pseudocolor.
I need to know how to configure the Common Desktop Environment (CDE) to allow true color and flashing.
    Thanks
    Dave

Are you using the integrated graphics, in that SB150 ?
What is the current screen resolution?
    Do ...
    # man m64config
Keep in mind that the SB150's integrated graphics has only 4mb of video RAM.
Consequently, you will NOT get 24-bit color in any resolution higher than the default 1152x900.
Therefore, if you fell you must operate at 1280x1024 or higher,
you'll need to add another graphics card, such as the XVR100.
Glance at this other website for a longer discussion

  • StarOffice 8 CDE Icon and Document File Extension Associations

I recently upgraded to Solaris 10 (5/08). With previous versions of Solaris, I installed StarOffice 7 from CD and it placed the nice little icon in the CDE desktop panel and it created StarOffice associations to all the typical office file extensions (ie. .doc, .xls, etc.). I would like to use the StarOffice 8 that is bundled with Solaris 10. Is there an installation step or some other way to automatically setup the CDE icon and the file extension associations?
    Thanks,

I came across the same problem on windows XP SP2 machines.

  • Adjusting the CDE clock??

Ever since DST, my CDE clock is ahead by 1 hour. I am dual-booting with Windows 2000 and in Windows it seems to be ok. But in Solaris my clock shows that it is off by one hour ahead..
So how can I ADJUST the time in the CDE desktop? I have been searching the Sun docs for hours and no luck..IS ther any way I could adjust the time? It looks like theres no hope..

    Hi,
You can configure the clock with the "sun managment console" (smc) you find int in the CDE menu.

According to the Jar Guide (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/guide/jar/jarGuide.html)
    Executable Jar Files
On Microsoft Windows systems, the Java 2 Runtime Environment's installation program will register a default association for Jar files so that double-clicking a Jar file on the desktop will automatically run it with javaw -jar. Dependent extensions bundled with the application will also be loaded automatically. This feature makes the end-user runtime environment easier to use on Microsoft Windows systems.
The Solaris 2.6 kernel has already been extended to recognize the special "magic" number that identifies a Jar file, and to invoke java -jar on such a Jar file as if it were a native Solaris executable. A application packaged in a Jar file can thus be executed directly from the command line or by clicking an icon on the CDE desktop.
Despite that every JAR file can be executed as a program if and only if the META-INF/Manifest.mf contains the Main-Class tag. This done through java -jar jarfile.jar

  • Installing Solaris as a guest OS on VirtualBox-1.6.0

I am using VirtualBox-1.6.0 as my VM on an AMD ATHLON 1800+ with 1GB RAM running Fedora 9 (uname -r = 2.6.25.3-18.fc9.i686). My first attempt to install Solaris was with Solaris10 11/06, while the second attempt was with Solaris10 05/08.
Solaris10 11/06: 1. Default screen resolution created a window too long with the bottom off screen.
Is there a recommended resolution when the host screen resolution is 1440x900?
    2. Guest Additions failed to install properly
What is the appropriate method for installing the Guest Additions for Solaris?
Solaris10 05/08: 1. Install hangs when installing as a networked system at system 77% initialized prior to the actual install.
    2. Install hangs when installing as a non-networked system when system is at 100% complete and about to reboot. I manually powered off the VM
unmounted the DVD image and then restarted the VM. When it rebooted, it complained that there wasn't a system on the hard drive.
In both installs, I went with the default config of the VM (512MB RAM, 8MB Video RAM, creating a dynamic virtual disk starting at 20GB limit), and the install media were iso's, 11/06 5 CD iso files and 05/08 1 DVD iso file.
    TIA

Just redid the install of Solaris10 11/06 and this time I was able to change the size of the window so that it is within my desktop. I am running 32 bit apps as my AMD processor is only 32 bit, also I originally went with the CDE desktop and later switched to JDE. I was also able to install the Guest Additions for Solaris this time without any errors using pkgadd from the cli. I haven't retried the 05/08 version yet, but will post when I do. One thing in common with 11/06 and OpenSolaris.200805 is that the audio on my system does not work on either VM VBox 1.6.0. It reports that it cannot find any compatible device. It also complains about the UART device, although I don't have Serial Ports enabled. Also does anyone know how to tell VBoxSvr what host name to use with each VM?
    Fri. 27 June 2008
    I was able to install Solaris10u5 (05/2008) on VMware Server using 684MB of RAM and 20GB HDD. I did not have the tools addition for Solaris, I'm not even sure if there is such an animal, so I had to "Scroll the desktop" to maneuver around. I then tried it again on VirtualBox 1.6.2, got through the initial install setting RAM to 684MB, default Video no Serial ports or USB, although parts were painfully slow. I was not able to do the first reboot, it just sat there saying that it was doing system initialization and the indicator just kept on going back and forth. After about 20 min. I shutoff the VM giving up. Also I still can't get sound to work on either the older Solaris10 or OpenSolaris. In OpenSolaris the DDU indicates that 2 drivers are missing;
Audio; Intel 82801AA AC'97 Audio Controller
    Other; ACPI AC Device
Anyone know if and when VBox or OpenSolaris will have these drivers?

  • Keyboard unresponsive in gnome / VNC session

    Greetings list -
I'm having a problem with a gnome session (Java Desktop) within VNC. When I start Real VNC server and connect to it with any vncviewer (Real, Tight, Ultra), everything comes up and looks fine. The mouse works, I can select things, drag windows, open menus, etc. However, when I try to type in an xterm or terminal session I get no response to the keyboard.
I have this in my .vnc/xstartup file:
xterm -geometry 80x43+10+10 -sb -sl 10240 -rv -ls -title "`hostname`" &
    gnome-session &
If I replace "gnome-session" with "dtwm" I get a CDE desktop and everything works fine (the keyboard works). When I start gnome from the console I don't have these problems, so I think it is an interaction with VNC.
Has anyone else seen this and/or have a suggestion? Thanks!
    - mikebo

I found that if you login in locally to the JDS, the user's home directory will be populated with the right files which will then allow a remote VNC connection with proper keyboard operation. I had the same problem since I started out trying a remote connection too.
Of course, if your Solaris 10 box is headless, it simply isn't possible to log in locally to JDS, so we have another thread going to try and find a patch for this issue.

  • Solaris 8 x86 Shutdown

    Hello,
I have installed the Solaris 8 Intel x86 edition. Now I have a (maybe silly) problem: I don't know how to shut down Solaris.
I am working with the CDE desktop. When I am logging out from there, the desktop is closed and the entrance panel for another CDE session appears. From this point, I don't find a way how to get a command prompt or a menu item for shutting down the solaris system for switching off the computer in a safe way.
When I am switching off the computer at the point of the entrance panel, this causes damages of the file system.
Inside CDE desktop, I cannot find a menu item for closing the CDE session and shutting down.
When I open a console within CDE and enter SHUTDOWN or HALT command, this ends the running Solaris but also damages the file system.
Can anybody tell me what the correct procedure is?
Thank you very much for your help!
    Thomas

    Hello,
I reinstalled Solaris 8 the same way as before, but now I always shutdown the system with init 5. So far, no problems with the file system occured. So I think the problem was the wrong shutdown methods I have used before.

  • Netscape Bug on Solaris 8 for x86

Has anyone else had a problem with Netscape on Solaris 8 for Intel? when I resize the Netscape window, shortly afterwards, the display begins to corrupt the CDE desktop with objects that should be displayed within the Netscape window. When I exit Netscape, the entire CDE goes white with black lines across the screen.
I've downloaded the latest version of Netscape Communicator for Intel Platforms. Netscape V4.76.
    I've installed the x86_Recommended patches.
I still have the same problem. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Yes, I'm having the same problem. however when I exit out of netscape and refresh the screen everything is ok. Please let me know if you've solved the problem.

  • GUI for network reconfigure on Solaris 10 ?

Does anyone know of an easy to install GUI interface for network configuration for the SUN E450 running Solaris 10 ? I am setting up the system and testing. I will be changing IP Addresses at least twice and Host Names at least once before the production deploy. I've already seen that a host name change will not allow a user to login to the CDE Desktop due to hostname change... thank goodness root can still login. I hate having to locate 10 different configuration files and modify them manually, or issue a sys-unconfig command. DEC TRUnix 64 had a nice GUI interface which allowed root to reconfigure any NIC properties, DNS server names, IP Addresses, Default Gateways etc.... Thoughts are sincerely appreciated ! I am obviously a novice here. I downloaded the companion CD, but all I see on it are language additions. I reviewed the individual downloadable packages but saw nothing interesting. Maybe Solaris 10 already has a nice one, and I just haven't found it from the CDE.... Thanks, Randy !

OK..... sys-unconfig is ok, but what file(s) do I need to edit in order for users to log into their CDE provided that the host name changes.... Any ideas ? In other words, if one changes the host name under the sys-unconfig command, at least one file somewhere (maybe in the home directory auto mount) still refers to the old host name, thus locking users out of their CDE.... Thanks again !

  • Solaris 10 - Changing default screen color depth

    Hello,
I just upgraded a Sun Blade from Solaris 8 to 10. I have a rather old image display application (ftp://east.la.asu.edu/pub/software/pw-5.23.tar.gz) that is absolutely essential for my work, and it will not run under Solaris 10, either on the CDE or jave/gnome desktops.
The executable for this application was compiled using gcc on Solaris 8, and ran fine on Solaris 8 CDE (v1.4.3?) with the "Most colors for applications" color setting in Desktop Color prefs. With that setup, the application allocated 216 colors when starting up, which was sufficient. If the application could not allocate enough colors, it would use its own private color map, which caused window "flashing," but that was OK.
Under Solaris 10 CDE (v1.6.3) and gnome, the application cannot allocate enough colors, and cannot even start with its own color map.
I re-complied the application on Solaris 10 using Sun Studio 11, and the same problem occurs with the new executable.
I think that the problem may be related to default color depth. Right now, with xwininfo, my Solaris 10 CDE xterms are 24-bit true color. Unfortunately, I think that I may need to set my default color depth to 8-bit pseudocolor for the application to run. How can I change the default color depth of the CDE and gnome desktops to pseudocolor? I know that the application works on HP-UX CDE with the default depth as pseudocolor.
I cannot remember if I had somehow changed the settings for color depth on Solaris 8 to get the application to run. I do know that the xwininfo results for a Firefox browser window running on my Solaris 8 CDE desktop was 24-bit true color. I hope very much that this will be the case if I change my default depth to 8-bit on Solaris 10.
Any help that anyone can provide would be GREATLY appreciated. I am dead in the water without this imaging application. I am a member of the Sun Developer Network, and I don't know if I should post this message somewhere on the Developer Forums. Please let me know if I should.
    Thank you in advance!!!!!

    Hi,
In my first post there is a link to the code I am talking about. The code is public and available. It was created by Noel Gorelick at ASU. It is based on having an 8-bit Xserver running. There are few users of this code, but I completely agree with you that a new generation of unix-based imaging code needs to be developed that is system and Xserver independent. Optimal code should detect screen depth and open windows with desired color depth automatically, without "flashing.". That way, it could even run under Gnome, which allocates all but 18 8-bit colors for the desktop. Under CDE, the code allocates 224 colors for itself, which is great. The above code will create its own colormap if it cannot allocate enough colors, but there is flashing in that case. Have at it if you wish.
    Best regards,
    Sparcmaster

  • PrinterJob.lookupPrintServices() returns no PrintServices on Solaris 10

I am using a third-party PDF Java print API that uses the Java Print API. The API is used in a WebLogic 10.2 server runtime environment. My problem is that after the server has been running for a day or so, the API is no longer able to see the printers that are set up on a local print server. Issuing lpstat -a from the command line returns all of the printers as does a simple java app that I run from the command line. I have written a simple JSP page to dump out the available PrintServices so I can check to see what's available in the server runtime environment and after a day or so there are none.
The application runs in a cluster and the PrintServices show up just fine on one of the nodes, but the second node is the one that always has a problem. It's not making a lot of sense at this point but any insight into what would cause PrintServices to suddenly become unnoticed by the Java Print API in runtime would be very helpful!
Here is the code from the JSP that checks for the PrintServices:
    Available Printers:<br/>
    *<ul>*
    *<%*
    *// List printers*
    javax.print.PrintService [] ps = java.awt.print.PrinterJob.lookupPrintServices();
    for (int count = 0; count < ps.length; ++count)
    *%>*
    *<li><b><%=ps [count].getName()%></b> (PrintService class: <%=ps [count].getClass().getName()%>)</li>*
    *<%*
    *%>*
    *</ul>*

    Thanks fro the reply.
The system is a T2000(sparc). This server provides CDE desktop to 200s users and is running Citrix Presentation Server. I guess Citirx has its own X server? because I found the xsun process when I checked another sparc server not running Citrix Presentation Server:
    # ps -ef|grep -i xsun |grep -v grep
    root 682 671 1 Nov 27 ? 2:13 /usr/openwin/bin/Xsun :0 -defdepth 24 -nobanner -auth /var/dt/A:0-xNa4tb
My another question is why the:
    /var/svc/manifest/application/x11/x11-server.xml
is not imported to SMF like xfs is?
    regards,
    Alex

    #tar xvf vnc-4_1_2-sparc_solaris.tar
    #cd vnc-4_1_2-sparc_solaris
    b)
    Install it by running:
    # ./vncinstall /usr/bin /usr/share/man/
Note: this will also install man pages into /usr/share/man/man1
If you want to use the Java VNC viewer :
Copy the files from the java directory to some suitable installation directory
such as /usr/local/vnc/classes (vncserver will read this path!- dont change it):
    # mkdir -p /usr/local/vnc/classes
    # cp java/* /usr/local/vnc/classes
    c)
Add this line to .profile (under the user):
    vncserver -depth 24 -geometry 1024x768
    d)
(this folder/files would be for each user too)
Create a /.vnc directory first, we will create the xstartup file inside:
    file /.vnc/xstartup:
    #!/bin/sh
    xsetroot -solid grey
    gnome-session     <open on gnome desktop>
    #/usr/dt/bin/dtsession <open on CDE desktop>
    make it executable:
    # chmod 744 xstartup To make it executable.
If you still see this message on the log but works dont worry about it:
"error opening security policy file /usr/openwin/lib/X11/xserver/SecurityPolicy
Could not init font path element /usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing from list!
    its a buboo...
