Cde/openwin/xterm

Hello: I'm new to Solaris and Unix. I have a SunFire 280R and have installed Solaris 5.8. I have been using the system CDE console with no problems. When I try and access the SUN box from my laptop all seems fine until I try and use the available tools. I'm currently telneting in via reflections software as xterm. This works OK until I try and use the GUI utilities. Admintool works OK MeTATOOL is OK but if I try and use SMC or PRODREG nothing but problems. I have also tried to use reflections to XDMCP direct connect using CDE this also is unreliable.Using an openwindows session is sometimes better but still not great Any advice as to dependable access alternatives would be greatly appreciated.

CDE is now Sun's default window manager and is included in Solaris. You can select it from the options in the login box. Mind you, they plan to change the standard to Gnome shortly...

  • Installing SFWgcc from Sol 8 Media

    I can't get CDE/Openwin running (Yet), so am pkgadd'ing direct from the Additional software CD. When installing SFWgcc, I get complaints about SFWgcmn not being installed. This packages doesn't seem to be on any of the CD's, is this a mistake by Sun? Or am I not looking correctly?

    What do you select as the device to boot from? Is Solaris installed on the Hard drive? If not then you must select the cdrom as the boot device until such time as Solaris is installed on the hard drive. If the floppy was not write protected when this happened it will be corrupt now and you need to download a new image from http://access1.sun.com and re-create the DCA floppy using the dd command.
    If there is a Solaris 8 install on the hard drive then you may still need to boot cdrom, single-user and debug that install.
    Instructions for booting single-user cdrom are in InfoDoc 22006. Here is the pertenant section:
    Booting Single-User From CDROM Using the Device Configuration Assistant (DCA) on the Hard Drive:
    1). Power the system on.
    2). Insert the correct version Solaris Software cdrom for your system.
    OPTIONAL: If there is a boot loader in operation on your system, select the Solaris partition as the partition to boot from.
    3). After the "Solaris Secondary Boot Loader" and "Running Device Configuration Assistant" messages appear, hit the 'esc' key where prompted to do so.
    4). At the "DCA intro screen" hit F2 (F2_Continue).
    5). At the "list of devices found" hit F2 (F2_Continue).
    6). At the "list of available boot devices" select the CDROM as the device from which to boot a Solaris kernel.
    7). At the screen where you are prompted to select 1, 2, or 3 for what type of install you wish to do, enter 'b -s' instead of a number.
    This will bring the system up to single-user mode from the cdrom.
    Hope this helps.

  • Console CDE scree freeze!

    hi,
    I'm running Solaris 8 on an intel box.
    Sometime in the mid of unzipping a package using gunzip my CDE screen will freeze at the console. I would like to be able to telnet in to kill the stalled CDE session. Which daemon should I kill in order for me to restore my console CDE screen back to its logon screen state? Thanks for your help!

    try using /etc/rc2.d/S99dtlogin reset or stop/start option to restart dtlogin daemon or
    try killing /usr/openwin/bin/xterm if you are in telnet or
    try killing /ust/dt/bin/dtsession

  • Solaris 9 x86 bug report - el_GR.ISO8859-7 & CDE

    I'm posting this article here, because I can't find any official Solaris 9 x86 bug report page. I hope the developers will notice it. I'm using Solaris 9 x86 (12/02), with the latest 9_x86_Recommended patch cluster installed, and support for Greek installed too.
    It seems there is some kind of problem, when trying to view text files with Greek (el_GR.ISO8859-7) characters, which were created under Windows. To be more specific:
    If I boot at CDE with language el_GR.ISO8859-7, and try to view a .txt file (just with a simple double click), which I have created under Windows, with Greek characters,
    the screen goes black, and the CDE login screen appears again (restarts). If I keep the Greek language or change the language to US English, I can boot at CDE again, with
    no problems. If I try "command line logging", the screen goes off - just like when the computer is powered off, and I can't do anything, (well, except pressing the reset button, that's the sure way). And if I use the "init 6" command, while being logged at CDE, from a terminal, the Graphical Desktop exits, and then, the screen goes off again (just like the computer is powered off), but finally the computer manages to restart.
    I'm using the Sun X server, NOT the XFree86 porting kit and I use the entry

  • Messages to /dev/sysmsg and /dev/console are displayed on the CDE Desktop

    I noticed that after reboots any message sent to /dev/sysmsg or /dev/console is displayed to the CDE Desktop (wallpaper). After I log out then log back in the problem disappears. This happens in global zones only and not in a non-global (local) zone.
    (the only service I see with "svcs -xv" is the Print Service)
    To repeat the problem I have to do the following:
    1. Reboot (init 6)
    2. Login to the CDE as a user.
    3. Open an Xterm window, and in the windows, "su" to root
    4. Observe a "su on ..." message on the CDE desktop in big white "OBP" looking mono-spaced text.
    5. Log out of the CDE
    6. Login to the CDE as a user.
    7. Open an Xterm window, and in the windows, "su" to root
    8. Problem has disappeared, no more logging of console like messages to the CDE desktop.
    As well, if I do something like this after I reboot, and on 1st log in:
    echo "Hi there" > /dev/console
    echo "Another Hello" > dev/sysmsg
    I'll see both messages print to the Desktop of the CDE. If I log out and log back in, I will no longer see this kind of behavior.
    My Hardware: Sun Netra CP3260
    My Software: Sun Solaris 10 5/08 Update 5 with 137137-09
    Additional info:
    /etc/syslog.conf - does have a line that directs some output to /dev/sysmsg
    /etc/default/su - does list: CONSOLE=/dev/console
    I did comment out the above two lines in my syslog.conf and /etc/default/su, and the behavior goes away, however this is a workaround and not a fix of the issue.
    Any ideas?

  • Installing JDS 3 on Solaris 10 SPARC previously running CDE

    Does anyone have experience of installing JDS3 on SPARC architectures? Most of the posts seem to relate to x86. I'm having trouble installing JDS3 from the Solaris 6/06 distribution.
    I have a jumpstart config which starts with a SUNWCrnet and adds the minimum to provide a CDE with XDM log in. We thought we'd try JDS3 so I've expanded the profile to include all packages in the Sol10 6/06 distribution which are marked as belonging to the GNOME2 or JDS3 categories.
    This gives the option for selecting JDS from the login session menu. The desktop comes up ok but then we get error messages:
    'Failed to execute child process "xscreensaver" '
    Attempting to start any application from any menu results in the following message:
    'Cannot launch entry
    Details: Text was empty (or contained only white space)'
    I can't even open a terminal.
    It looks like a major piece of configuration data is missing but I'm not sure where to start looking.
    Any help for an old SPARC head gratefully received.

    Xscreensaver needs to have both /usr/openwin/bin and /usr/X11/bin in the user's $PATH. Add the line:
    PATH=$PATH:/usr/openwin/bin:/usr/X11/bin
    in your .profile and that should do it for you.

  • CDE font issue on Solaris 10 1/06

    Greetings,
    For some reason I get the following error when CDE applications load up:
    Warning: Cannot convert string "-dt-interface user-medium-r-normal-m*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*" to type FontStruct
    Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
    Warning: Cannot convert string "-dt-interface system-medium-r-normal-m*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*" to type FontSet
    Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
    Warning: Cannot convert string "-dt-interface user-medium-r-normal-m*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*" to type FontSet
    The dtlogin, etc. fonts are not the usual CDE font and look terrible, as you might expect. I've tried setting the locale to ascii and ISO-8859-1, with the same results. In the /usr/openwin/X11/lib/fonts/XXdpi/fonts.alias files, there is a dt-application font listed, but no dt-interface user- listed.
    I suspect this may be related to picking the Developer group at install rather than the Entire Group or customizing, but I can't think of an obvious way to test this other than to re-install. Also, I don't know what the default font for interface user is, or exactly how CDE decides those.
    If anyone knows a quick fix for this, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Cheers,
    Dave

    I was able to work around this using the article available at:
    http://www.linuxgazette.com/node/797
    I am still wondering why these aliases were not generated on installation.

    I compared (by size) /usr/openwin on the 100's and the 150 and revealed the 100's directory pretty much empty. (Sizes at end.)

    That compiler warning is probably benign (harmless).  The function appears to change the working directory and then return a void pointer.  The pointer is not used because, apparently, in this case it is not needed.

  • Problems when using en_US.UTF-8 at CDE/GDM

    I've recently switched to using "en_US.UTF-8" locale and started using gdm2 on my Solaris10 AMD64 box. I used to have the default CDE locale ("C" ?) and the CDE login manager.
    Prior to these changes I had NO problem, but now after I start emacs 22.1, or 22.3.1 (which I built locally) after a long delay, I get
    "Variable binding depth exceeds max-specpdl-size"
    which is a "stack overflow" really. 'trussing' Emacs I noticed that while emacs is trying to launch it keeps reading large number of 64KB chunks of "stuff" off the running X11 server (Xorg) and the Xorg server is running with 100% CPU utilization. My desktop is GNOME (JDS3 from SUN)
    I have tried to completely removing "~/.emacs" (renaming really) or calling "emacs -q" but the behavior repeats as long as there is an X11 server running and DISPLAY is set..
    Emacs would ONLY run when the DISPLAY is unset or when invoked as "emacs -nw" (no windows) in which case it launches as a text application in the xterm.
    Also, with the same locale Firefox3.0.3 crashes after some time with messages:
    "bad drawable...."
    or
    Warning: charset "EN_US.UTF-8" not supported, using "ISO8859-1".
    Warning: Encoding "ìz" is missing the following fonts:

    I have added the LANG in /etc/default/init to en_US.UTF-8 too.
    I have used localeadm to check that indeed all relevant locales are installed. See at the end.

    GNOME! So obvious.
    I hadn't seen your post when I made my last one, but it seems that GNOME was indeed configured incorrectly. I made some changes in it, put ~/.bashrc back the way it was and rebooted. Now I'm getting this:
    $ locale
    locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory
    locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: No such file or directory
    locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory
    LANG=en_US.utf8
    LC_CTYPE="en_US.utf8"
    LC_NUMERIC=en_AU.utf8
    LC_TIME=en_AU.utf8
    LC_COLLATE="en_US.utf8"
    LC_MONETARY=en_AU.utf8
    LC_MESSAGES="en_US.utf8"
    LC_PAPER=en_AU.utf8
    LC_NAME="en_US.utf8"
    LC_ADDRESS="en_US.utf8"
    LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.utf8"
    LC_MEASUREMENT=en_AU.utf8
    LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.utf8"
    LC_ALL=
    It isn't right yet, but I'm getting closer. Think I need to tinker with GNOME a bit more.
    Thanks, mariusmeyer.

  • Cannot login at JDS/CDE or console

    I'm having difficulty with an HP server running Solaris 10 - u7. Everything was fine Friday when I left, but upon arrival Monday morning, could not log into any accounts, including root. Through much difficulty I was able to mount the zfs root and change the /etc/shadow file and log into single user mode and reset the root password and my own userid password. I can log into root from single user any time. I still cannot log in to the command line console nor into any desktop (Java or CDE). I am wondering if the cde-login service is corrupted and its preventing any logins, including the console. None of those services run in single-user so disabling doesn't seem to do anything. I don't see anything in the dtlogin error files that indicates a specific problem (missing files, etc). Short of reloading the OS, does anyone have any other ideas how to at least get a command line console login?
    thanks - mc
    Edit: I was able to find an old root pool snapshot I had stashed on another disk and rolled back to it, and restored the system and kept all my user data intact. That still doesn't solve what the problem was initially and I would still like to hear any suggestions on what could cause the cde-login and console-login to fail on all accounts as it did.

    What do the */etc/inittab* file say? Compare the file with some other server. The getty process is culprit i think.

  • Flickering - radeon, awesome, xterm

    Hi!
    I'm setting up Arch on my notebook and I have problems with flickering.
    The config is very basic - just Xorg, open source Radeon driver and awesome wm. When rearranging xterm windows using awesome they flicker and they are redrawn slowly. It takes few seconds for xterm running top to settle down and not flicker. It looks like video driver is not working properly or Xorg setup is wrong. I've checked similar config under VirtualBox on my PC and there were no similar issues.
    Looking into dmesg and Xorg logs I could not find anything obvious for me. I tried adding Xorg config files with more specific settings of Monitor, Display etc, including DPI, display size, etc but with no luck. I'm not sure what should I check next and what could be the problem.
    I'm posting both dmesg and Xorg logs below.

    For future reference, you should look for and report about awesome issues on the awesome bugtracker. The dev doesn't use arch and won't be looking through these forums.

  • X11 / xterm won't even launch anymore

    I was using X11 with the minor glitches (i.e. cannot move x11 windows to secondary display). For some reason, x11 stopped working altogether today. I go to /Applications/Utilities/X11 and nothing happens.
    I checked /var/log/system.log and it has the following errors:

    Coincidentally, X11 stopped working after I ran System Update to install the Quicktime and iTunes updates today.
    Anyone else start having this problem?

    I was checking the boards and found someone who said their org.x.X11.plist file was not being installed after they had deinstalled 10.5 X11, installed 10.4 X11, and went back to 10.5 X11.
    I had did that earlier and wasn't having problems, but I went ahead and pulled that file from another 10.5 computer and copied that over to the affected Macbook.
    Problem solved.
