CDE problem!

Hi
I am not able to do desktop login whereas I could do console login. The desktop login screen is looking different from the regular one, in which one of the session option is 'failsafe session', which I have not seen in the regular login screen.
I tried running the /usr/dt/bin/dtconfig -e , it throws out information saying 'skipping unknown field in conf file'.
Is this the cause for the problem or ..
Do anyone have solution for this problem?
Thanks in advance

Thanks I got it fixed. The VirGE GX is working for OpenWindows but not for CDE. Any ideas?
Ahmed.

That compiler warning is probably benign (harmless).  The function appears to change the working directory and then return a void pointer.  The pointer is not used because, apparently, in this case it is not needed.

  • CDE problems

I've downloaded the latest version(04/01) of Solaris8 for x86. I'm having problems when I log in. When I login as root(to the CDE) the solaris backgroud pops up for about 3 secs then goes away. After about 5mins two windows pop up. One is the Desktop at a glance window and the other like a windows explorer window. anyway. My hardware is a PentiumII 266 with 128megs of ram 6gig harddrive. 3com Etherlink XL PCI and a Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 pci. Can someone please help me.

Yes, I did it. It was there that I found the DISPLAY problem, but looking at the environment variables, everything seems to be ok.

  • CDE problems when session is locking

when graphic session is locked in Solaris 10 whith CDE graphic enviroment, session is locked and login screen appears, but I don't log in any more because it's not responding even password is putting.
My questions is: is this a CDE known bug or there is another problem which is hardware for example.
the equipment is SunFire 440, solaris 10 with patches 12.xxx and CDE graphic enviroment.
    Thanks a lot for helping

Do you mean hold the sleep/wake button until the red *slide to power off* appears? If so, to wake it up you need to hold it again until it powers up. The Apple logo will appear, and it takes about 30 seconds to be ready. It will not (or at least, mine doesn't) wake up if you simply press-and-release the wake button or the Home key.

  • CDE problem after login

I have installed solaris 8 completly. But after CDE login,
I have seem black screen and only help and File manager windows there. My Video card is ET6000 with 2.25M Ram and resolution setting is 1024*768 256 color. Monitor is 15 inch with 48MHz MultiFrequency setting. Could any body help me? Tks a lot!

First try setting your video card as a Standard VGA with 800x600 resolution. Check to see if you are able to see everything on the desktop.
If you can, you need to find a driver that is better suited for your video card.
    Thanks & Revert back,

  • Hanging all over the place

    PLEASE HELP!!!
I've tried to install Solaris 8 on Intel a number of times. Sometimes I get the whole way through the install without a hitch, but then everything hangs once I get into the CDE (I can just sit and stare at it for 5 minutes and it hangs). Other times, it hangs while I'm trying to create a Solaris partition using the install CD and/or while I'm in the CDE finishing the installation from the 2 application CD's.
At first, I read through these threads and thought it was a CDE problem. I got the latest patch and went to install Solaris 8 again, but now I can't even get past creating the partition (which I don't think has any relation to the CDE). I'm dying over here...

I had the same problem and it is in fact got a lot to do with CDE.
It could be that you do not have the right video-card/Monitor combination set but it could also be that you have made the wrong choice for your mouse. It may be that you can NOT get it to set up correctly though in which case you had better read the Solaris x86 FAQ section about using XFree86 as an X-server.
Mind you : you SHOULD be able to bypass the black screen by booting the system with
b -s           (during the 5 second wait that comes before autoboot)
I installed XFree86 version 3.3.5 (couldnt get the latest version 4.0.1 to work) , you will be able to find a pre-compiled version on the net (approx 25MB download) but be aware that in the pre-compilded version I found on the net the program "extract" was missing so I had to take the "extract" version from Xfree4.0.1 which worked just as well.
Remember that you will need Xfree86 but also a server, you will be able to find info on www.xfree86.org telling you which server you need for your type of video hardware. You will need to create a directory /usr/X11R6. Then you need to run preinst.sh followed by "extract" of all the binaries you downloaded (*.tgz files) and to end up you need to run postinst.sh. Also remember to add /usr/X11R6/bin to your PATH variable after which you can run xf86config which will help you onward. The Solaris FAQ holds the missing finishing details.
In a nutshell : IF you CAN boot with b -s then you probably need to install XFree86 as an X-server

  • Alpine CDE-103Bt Head Unit and Problem with 160 Gig Ipod Classic

    Hi,
2 weeks agao I brought a new Alpine CDE-103BT Head unit for my car. I have owned one of the old 160 gig classics for the last year and a half and at the time I brough the unit I was told this should all work sweet. Indeed all of the documentation from Alpine, and the Sales person, said this would not be a problem.
Unfortunately from Day one, most times after I received a phone call, while playing my ipod, the Head Unit would givesme an "Error-03" message and stop playing my music. I would then have to unplug my ipod, reset it, and plug it back in. Extremely frustrating.
The people I brought the Head Unit from are trying to say its an Ipod problem, yet I never had any problems with it and after I contacted the Australian Ipod help line they said it all appears to be working correctly. The firmware version I was on when I first tried the ipod on the head unit was 1.1.2. The Alpine manual said it should be 1.1.1 (then again you would expect them to be able to cope with updates) so as a last ditch attempt I downgraded the firmware on my ipod to 1.1.1, but it did not make a difference.
The only other thing I have noticed is that I switch the repeat and shuffle settings off when I plug in the unit, but after I unplug it after an Error-03 the Repaet function has been swtiched to all - I am not sure if this is what is causing the problem.
I am getting pretty frustrated with everything and I was wondering if anyone else has come accross this issue and even me helpful had they found a way to fix it.
If not has anyone had any postive expereinces with Alpine head units?
    Thanks

  • Ipod Video and Alpine CDE-9852 Problem.

I'm having problems with my new Alpine CDE-9852, and my black 60 gig ipod Video (1.11 software verison).
When I first pluged in my Ipod to the unit I got Error 01, my first thought was that I needed to install software on the ipod, but from reading the owners manual I didn't see anything about that.
With the car still running I unpluged the Ipod and pluged it back in, it worked. I Went though the menu's, played all kindas of songs, no problems.
When I got home I thought I would play with it a bit, because it takes forever to go throw all my songs.
Then it just stoped working, getting Error 01, sometimes it would connect and get the check mark, but you couldn't control the Ipod, sometimes it would connect with the alpine logo showing my ipod, but when I go from track to track in a playlist it would crash and give me Error 01.
I have noticed that it would connect if I played a song on my Ipod but paused it, connected it to the cable, then started the car.
But it would still soon crash.
I just bought the unit from bestbuy today, I'm going to go back tomorrow and see if they can replace it or something.
maybe the cable needs to be repluged in.

Drove all the way to work, went thought my artists, played differnet stuff no problems.
I'm still going to go to bestbuy today and see if I can duplicate the issue, with them watching.

  • Problem with opening files in CDE

    Hi!
I have a problem with CDE. When I login as a normal user (not root) I can not open any file in my home directory or in its subfolders using dtfile (CDE File Manager).
When I double click on a text file I get the following error message:
The request to service this action has failed for the following reason:
TT_DESKTOP_ENOENT No such file or directory.
However I am able to read the file with a cat/pico command. It is also possible to open it from Text Editor. => The file exists.
PS. It might be a problem with automonting /export/home/user to /home/user, but I am not sure. I did not meet this problem in previous versions of Solaris.
    SYSTEM USED: Solaris 10 x86 / CDE 1.6
    Please help!

To test the automount hypothesis, you could create
a new user with a home directory someplace completely different and NFS-free, like /opt
    useradd -m -d /opt/testuser -s /bin/bash testuser
    passwd testuser
Then login to CDE as the user.
It does sound like there's something broken with $HOME/.dt

  • Bash CDE file manager problem

    I have the following problem:
I use the CDE and the bash shell. If I start a bash terminal from the file manager file menu, the environment variables are not set correctly. The entries made in the file /etc/profile are just ignored.
    However, the following works correctly:
-if I start the bash terminal from the CDE toolbar
    or
-if I use the bourne shell (both variants file manager and CDE toolbar work)
It seems that the file manager is not receiving the correct environment information from the CDE.
    Thanks for any help.

  • Problems : Starting up with CDE and Opening terminal window in JDS

    Hi
I installed Solaris 10 GA on the system having 2.8 GHz Dual Xeon processor with EM64T.
Installation process was fine and completed. But, I have two problems with CDE and JDS.
Firstly, in JDS, the graphical login comes up, works fine. After I login (as root or anyone), sometimes terminal window does not start up correctly. The windows for terminal apprear, but there is no display. Thus, I cannot use the terminal in JDS, while the other menus on launch panel (e.g. StarOffice) seem to work properly.
Secondly, in CDE, I can login, the hourglass pointer appears and changes to arrow pointer. But then, there are no items except only the pointer and wallpaper.
Both problems do not happen at every login time. when the problems happen, I have to reboot (in CDE/JDS) or re-login (in JDS). After some rebooting or re-login, things work fine again.
    Can everybody help me?
    Thanks

I am not Adobe staff, but I have never heard of an "online upgrade". When I purchased my CS6 upgrade  from Adobe, they sent me an email with the serial.
Who did you go through to get this upgrade?

  • CDE Window Manager  configuration problem (Sol 8)

    Hi
I have a strange problem with CDE. After having a proper PC instalation done, as I log in the CDE I get black background and only 2 windows ( a kind of help window and the File Manager) The windows don't have title bars, cannot be moved ot whatever. Now, I seems to me that the window manager failed to start. Since I'm new to Solaris, can anybody give me a hint where I can find the configuration scripts and error logs.
    Thanks
    Val

if it were me I'd check /var/dt/Xerrors (Xservers log file)
$HOME/.dt/errorlog & startlogs for clues ... this is where CDE would log
    problems.
However you mentioned PC so I'll assume you are using ReflectionsX,
    Exceed
or similar, all come with a log file and trace utility via the Xconfig
    screen
which maybe worth your while looking into ?
As to the window manager failing to start .... the process is called
    dtlogin
and on the Solaris server you should see one parent process + 1 child per
remote display if things are working correctly.
Gotcha's : most likely problems are caused by either Fonts - check PC
Xemulation log files or hostname resolution problems.

  • Problem in JButton while changing look and feel to CDE/Motif

In my application i'm using JButtons placed in JToolbar. I've setIcons for the JButtons. The top of the icons i.e the JButtons get hided while i changing the look & feel to CDE/Motif. But again if i change the look & feel to Metal, no problem is there. Expecting a favourable response from someone well versed / faced such problems earlier problems.

Sounds suspiciously like you are setting absolute sizes for your buttons or elsewhere in application. Can you post code snippets showing how you layout your application.

  • CDE (Common Disktop Environment) problem

    Hi all:
I installed Solaris 8 on an Intel Dual pentium 550MHz. with 128 mb of RAM. Eveything installed correctly. But when the system rebooted, after logging into the system with the CDE, there is a long delay before I can see anything on the screen. Eventually a help window and a file manager window show up on the screen. But I am not able to move anything on the screen. It always core dumps. In the /dev/dt/Xerrors, it always has something about DPMS is not supported. I have changed the video card to many different brands which were in the hardware compatibility list from sun and still the same results. The behaviour is the same no matter what Video card I use. The Open desktop Environment seems to be working Ok. Please help as to what may be the problem.
    THANKS,
    Monga.

    Thanks Manish.
I've done that you told me, but the CDE continues on the same form that describes Mongal. the xset command displays that it's disabled and that the display is nit capable of DPMS
I's intalled in a IBM Aptiva PII 266, 112Mb RAM, and a ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP 2X with 4Mb VRAM. But the Solaris regonize the VGA in the installation program. It's possible that the VGA has a poor quantity of memory to run the CDE?
Perhaps if I write you what appears in /var/dt/Xerrors, it will help you.
