CDMA and GSM

So in reading about the new Iphone 4s, it looks like it will support CDMA and GSM.  So to make it would not matter as much who your carrier is.  Or is it two of the same annttena so it can not switch between gsm and CDMA?

Yes. It's a true "world phone".

I'm not sure what you mean by this... The big reason for building a world phone is so that people who use a CDMA service in the very few countries that have them can put in a SIM card and get service in the rest of the world.

I recently ordered a USB sync cable for Iphone 4S from ebay. I want to know whether the USB sync cable for Iphone 4S is different for CDMA and GSM version phones? And if they are then what are the likely consequences if they are interchanged and used inadvertantly.

All recent iDevices use the same type of connector/cable.

  • Hello I want to Buy iPhone 5 CDMA and GSM open and I am in Yemen how to do it

Hello I want to Buy iPhone 5 CDMA and GSM open and I am in Yemen how to do it

NO it won't work in India because all the iPhones for sale in the USA are carrier locked to networks, so no they won't work outside the USA.
There will be no unocked iPhones for sale in the US at the moment which is what you need, and anyway, if you purchased one in the US, there is no international warranty so there is nothing you can do.
You will have to wait because it won't work in India.

  • Switch between CDMA and GSM Iphone 5

    Hi,
I am wondering on the Verizon Iphone 5, can you switch between CDMA and GSM via a setting or is it still like the iphone 4s where you have to remove the sim card to switch back to CDMA?
    Thanks.

A SOLUTION: cut another corner and insert the nano-SIM upside-down, and keep a SIM card ejection tool on your key ring or tape one to your phone's case or both.
Adam, and anyone else who like us, was hoping that there were a software based method that would allow iPhone 5 users the option of toggling between Verizon (or other CDMA carrier) and whatever other SIM Card based GSM carrier we have inserted/installed into our SIM tray.
For myself, I have a SIM card with the "Minutes" type of plan, specifically the minutes plan that gives 2000 minutes for $100, which is good for one year. This is my backup network.
Since I do not need a SIM for the CDMA network that I use as my primary network, my SIM slot is empty (I am not running LTE, only 3G).
So, in order to be able to switch my handset from one carrier to the other, which would be most helpful in the event of a system failure on my primary carrier I can switch over to my "backup/gsm network; it would be very, very nice to be able to toggle between the two networks, (like in the old days where we could simply select either the 'A' {non-wireline} or the 'B' {wireline} carrier/network) by simply pressing a couple-few buttons.  It is funny to me to actually realize my old "Brick" phone actually had a feature lacking on my iPhone 5.
This would have been great during hurricane Sandy when my Verizon service was (literally) dead in the water for several days.  And, there is always the possibility of a cell site going down on the primary network, again.

  • Upgrade question-Whata CDMA and GSM

I recently upgraded by blackberry bold to 6.0 and it as me a question.  I don't even know what it means so I said no!  I think this coded language is a bit assuming.  Here's the question.
    What does this mean ?
"you have inserted a SM Card. Would you like our blackbery to automatically selct CDMA or GSM based on the network availability?"
I think SM is my memory card. so what is CDMA or GSM and what would happen if I answered Yes!
Will this end up costing me extra money?
I hope someone can help me out, I spent 25 minutes wading through Support trying to get an answer.

It's a routine question I get often on my CDMA devices, and unless you roam into another country, there's really no problem.
If you're traveling internationally, you'll want to call your carrier anyway and set up an international calling and data plan.

  • Can CDMA and GSM work at the some time on iPhone 4s

I am currently using two phones right now (work/personal). I was thinking about getting Sprint CDMA(iphone4s) for one line and using its unlocked GSM for the other line! so that I don't have to carry 2 phones all the time. Do you guys think it will work???

As long as the profiles are different (ex. HID vs AD2P) you will not have any issues. But say if you try to use 2 keyboards at once, it won't work. Or 2 headsets at once. Your scenario seems fine.

  • Will an unlocked iPhone 4S work with both CDMA and GSM SIM cards?

I was using the iPhone 4S with a GSM sim card all these years here in India and would like to switch to a CDMA carrier.
Does the phone work with both SIM cards? Or is there a separate model which works with CDMA?

    Thank You!

  • Have 9630 Tour. Which other phones will work with CDMA and GSM providers?

Looking to replace my phone.  Having to carry another when traveling overseas is such a pain.  Love the fact that I can just pop another SIM in my 9630 and use is on a GSM network when I want.  Does anyone know what other models have this feature?
    I keep getting conflicting information.
Thanks, in advance, for any assistance/advice offered......

Hi nevercanstop and welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums!
Any new BlackBerry smartphones released by CDMA proviers have this feature included. 2 others are the BlackBerry Bold 9650 and the BlackBerry Storm 2 .

  • GSM & CDMA and the unlocked 4s - Technical or Business based limitation?

So there are many threads about the GSM & CDMA with CDMA only being available on a locked phone and that GSM roaming is at the indulgence on the carrier. I am in Canada so the carrier choices would be different.
My question is whether this is a technical limitation or based (presumably at the request of Verizon in the US) on official CDMA carriers not wanting the 4S to be used on different networks? Will an unlocked 4S never be able to have CDMA enabled or is there no legitimate way to do it? (I am not looking for "sure someone will be able to jailbreak it and turn it on" - though I guess this would answer the technical question, more along the lines of if 6 months down the CDMA is no longer officially locked but you bought your unlocked phone too soon, too bad or you.)
As for why I am asking: I need to wade through Canadian carriers and their plans and figure out which way to go if I get a 4S.

Existing GSM iPhones will not work on CDMA networks because they don't have the right type of cellular radio. It doesn't matter if they're locked or unlocked. It would be like trying to get an FM signal on an AM only radio. It's just not possible.
The iPhone 4S has both CDMA and GSM capabilities. CDMA phones are not locked in the same way that GSM phones are. But, technical details aside, Sprint phones will not work on Verizon's network and vice versa. It's not clear, to me at least, how this will all play out with the 4S.
AT&T has only ever sold locked iPhones which they won't unlock. I haven't heard that they plan on doing any differently. The unlocked GSM iPhones that you can buy at the Apple Store can use any GSM SIM.
So if I'm a Verizon iPhone 4S user, would I be able to use the 4S if I went to Ukraine and bought a SIM card from an MTS store for their network?

Can i use cdma for internet and gsm for phone at a time in Iphone4s?

No. Phones sold by GSM carriers can't access CDMA at all and phones sold by CDMA carriers can only access GSM if they are a) unlocked and b) in an area where there is not CDMA.
    Best of luck.

  • Should I purchase CDMA or GSM iPhone for use in U.S. and Hong Kong/China?

I currently have an unlocked GSM iPhone 4 that I bought in Hong Kong, and have been using it in the US through Straight Talk. I love having the flexibility of an unlocked phone when I travel. Unfortunately, the GSM networks in my area are pretty spotty, and Verizon's CDMA coverage is MUCH better. Not to mention the data speed is really slow.
I'd like to purchase an unlocked iPhone 5s without a contract, and hopefully be able to use it on the CDMA network here in america, while still have GSM available for use when I travel back and forth to Asia.
The pros and cons of GSM vs. CDMA iPhones are still pretty muddy for me, but it sounds like buying a CDMA iphone would be better for my situation because I could utilize both networks when traveling, and yet have the best speed/coverage in my current home in the US.
Straight talk or Page Plus is what I'm looking to for carriers. Verizon's too expensive for me.
    Here are my questions:
    1. Does my choosing CDMA seem to be the best choice? Or are there any cons regarding purchasing CDMA that I've overlooked? I've heard people say there is no such thing as an unlocked CDMA iphone. My biggest concern is that I arrive in Asia and find that some CDMA lock prevents me from using any other carrier--CDMA or GSM. (Both networks are available there, btw.) I need to make sure I can use data and make calls when I'm there.
    2. If a CDMA iphone is the best choice for me, how do I purchase the right one without a contract? Apple store? Verizon? Straight Talk (do they sell CDMA iphones)?Canada? Ebay seems kinda risky to get an iPhone with the specifications I need.
    3. Does a CDMA iphone still have the slot for sim cards? That's how I've always switched carriers when in Asia.
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the reply. I didn't know that StraightTalk disabled their iphone's GSM capabilities. Guess I won't be going there to buy one.
    A few follow-up questions...
So is a SIM slot only used for GSM? This is something I never knew. I assumed for any network (GSM or CDMA) that a new sim card was the way you changed numbers/networks.
I've heard people mentioning that they've been able to buy Verizon iphones and use them on PagePlus, but this information was a year or two old, so perhaps things have changed with the newer models/carrier contracts. Do you know of any people who have had success in using a Verizon iPhone 5s on the PagePlus network?

  • Compare and Contrast :- Mobile Networks(GSM/CDMA) and CISCO Wireless-Mobility

    Hi,
I am a CCNA certified Electronics and Communications Engineering Graduate from India.
Nowdays the market here is up in mobile networking driven by companies like Nokia-Siemens Networks, Ericsson, etc.
Wireless Mobile Networks are all geared up for 3G UMTS(Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) architecture.(in GSM).
    * My question is how are the above mentioned networks different from the Cisco Wireless Mobility concepts?
    * What is common in them?
I know that these mobile networks are converting to packet-switched systems from legacy circuit ones.
    * Does cisco come in only as a backbone Routing and Switching hardware providerfor this area,
Or does it offer a complete Unified End-to-End Solution in this domain?
    is the difference just size??

    Neal,
I do not think that in a forum like this we will be able to provide you a full answer. I recommend that you contact your Cisco account team as they will be able to work through all of the details to your design and fill the requirements of your customer.
A few things for you to look into and ask your account team.
The CDMA2000 1x RTT gateway is the PDSN this gateway is very similar to the GPRS gateway
The MWR 1900 is designed for an IPRAN network design and may or may not fall into what you have describe but your account team can help you with that
The Cisco MAR3200 is a mobile router that is designed to route between various radio access methods such as CDMA or GSM or WLAN etc. It will also do mobile IP.
Cisco has an extensive solution range for both the access gateways and back end services such as service selection authentication accounting and billing.
What you are asking for can be done using Cisco products but, it is a complex network design so please contact your account team for full details.
I am sorry I could not answer your question 100% but hope I have given you enough leads to get the design sorted
    David

Does Verizon iPhone 5 CDMA model A1429 without a contract (contract-free and GSM unlocked) is supporting the same LTE bands which IPhone 5 GSM model A1429 support?
