CDMA USB Modem Not Working After Mavericks Install

I use my LG VX9100 (Env2) as a CDMA USB internet modem, and it worked fine in Mountain Lion on a Mid 2012 Macbook Air and all other Macs I tried it with.  After upgrading to Mavericks, I am not allowed to initiate a connection because the I get a message of "No SIM" after it tries to initialize from the menubar.  The phone works fine and I have confirmed that all of the settings are the same.  The phone is on Verizon, so the phone has never had a SIM card.  This all worked prior to the Mavericks install, so it appears to be a bug.  Any suggestions of what to try?

Hi, no drivers were required in the past, basically just had to type in the phone number as the account name followed by @vzw3g.com and enter VZW as a password and it would connect right up using the built in cell data of the phone plan.   Only works with dumbphones as far as I know.
So, unless mavericks is subtracting features rather than adding them, the built in drivers should still be there.  I have tested it with 10.6 through 10.8 and settings are accesable via the "Network" PrefPane and it always recognized it from a fresh install of OSX.  The following article suggests that they have been built into OSX since OS 10.2:
http://www.engadget.com/2005/01/18/how-to-use-your-cdma-cellphone-as-a-usb-modem /
That article was written in 2005 and said that some carriers would need a driver, but I know for sure that more were added since then as I have used built in drivers from 10.6 to 10.8.
Windows may need drivers, but mac has had most CDMA drivers built in for over 10 years now.  The VX9100 uses a generic vendor driver, but OSX had selections for most major cell phone manufacturers built in for any custom requirements.  There just doesn't seem to be a reason to get rid of the feature now.
Given the fact that it does show up in the menubar like it used to shows that the mac can tell that it is a modem and has the drivers there, but they aren't working properly.

  • Admin password not working after Mavericks install

I have installed OS X Mavericks on a Mac mini (upgrade from OS X 10.8). After the install I can't log in to the admin account using my regular password. However, the other account, not having admin rights, works fine in the Mavericks OS. But I need access to the admin account as well! How can I reset the password? I have no recent backup.

  • File sharing not working after mavericks install

I have upgraded both my MB Air and my Mini to Mavericks and have discovered that sharing between the two over my wi-fi network is not working.  I cannot share the printer from my mini to the Air, and when I try to "connect to server" under the "go" menu in finder, it says, "there was a problem connecting to the server "mini.local".
    Any help?

    Hi Bryan_Jay,
Any resolution to this issue? I have the exact same setup. A 2013 MB Air on a Time Capsule network with a 2013 Mac Mini. The strange thing is that sharing worked fine after the Mavericks upgrade for about 2 weeks; after that point I cannot connect to shared folders on the Mini from the MacBook, but am able to connect from the Mini to the MacBook. On an interesting note, I am able to connect to the Mini from the MacBook using Screen Sharing. I'm wondering if a system update might have caused the problem.
    Hope you're up and running!

  • DIY Fusion drive not working after Mavericks install

    Hi Everyone,
I had setup a DIY fusion drive on my iMac 27" Mid 2011 - installing a Samsung SSD and a new 1TB drive. Everything was working swimmingly in Mountain Lion but as soon as I upgraded to Mavericks - everything slowed down.
In speed test I get an average write speed of 70 MB/s and a read of about 100MB/s...
Did I do something wrong? I installed Mavericks via the App Store.
    Thanks.
    Martin

Did you ever figure this out?  I have a similar experience (read below) and wanted to know if anything you learned helped?
    Hi all. I have a 3.2GHz i5 w 24 GB of Ram. Purchased in January 2014.
My good friend helped me install a DIY Fusion. I purchased a 256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD and he did the work to "fuse" it with the regular 1TB HD the iMac came with. It is attached via USB 3.0 in an OWC case.
Originally, after being set up - Black Magic Speed tests benched it at 250-350 write and 500-650 read. I'm not a techie, but spent enough time to know that is pretty smoking and well above a typical disk hard drive.
Well, now it is down to 70-80 write and 180-250 read. The imac still boots in less than 25 seconds, so I don't feel the system is slow. (and it certainly blazes next to the first generation aluminum iMac I had before - a 2008 model). But I am concerned at deterioration of speed and really thought the extra investment would have led to faster sustained speeds.
    So my questions are:
    * Does anybody have any ideas why this is happening?
    * Any idea what the fix is? I'm hoping not to have to start over.
    * Any ideas whether it would have been better just to keep the 256 a boot drive for OS & apps, and leave the 1TB for media? I almost did this and wonder if it would have simplified things or led to better performance.
    * Any idea where to go from here?
BTW, I know a little about TRIM, but I think my friend said the Samsung will handle that itself.
Lastly, you can probably tell I know a bit ABOUT this stuff, but not much on HOW to do it. So regular maintenance and upkeep is not my strong suit.
Thanks in advance for comments & suggestions.
    Jake

  • Superdrive(s) not working after mavericks install?

After installing Mavericks, my internal superdrives will not function properly. I have two superdrives installed on my Early 2009 Mac Pro with 2.93 GHz quad core Intel processor. I insert a disc, close the drawer, I hear some whirring/spinning sounds, then the drawer opens up. Same result with either drive.
I was trying to install tax prep software, get the same non-function if I try to run music CD. Cleaned the lens with compressed air, and also a CD Laser Lens Cleaner disc.
I use the drives occasionally. However, the last time, prior to Maverick download and install, both drives worked fine.
Are the drives supported by Mavericks?  Should I reset the SMC?
I have looked through some recent threads, and this issue seems to come up with increasing frequency, with many varied and sometimes conflicting results. I noted with some chagrin one pragmatic response of buying an external optical drive and forgoing the attempt to regain function of the factory-installed superdrives. Perhaps I didn't delve far enough into prior threads to find an answer.
    What are other's doing?

Look around - this is clearly a known issue to many users.  We have all tried EVERYTHING to get this to work - about the only solution I have seen is to downgrade your OS - that will get the drive working again.  Apple is ignoring the problem - sabotaging your equipment is not a concern of Tim Cook while he is going about ruining any innovation Apple ever had.  Seen the new itunes?  You get my drift.

  • HP G4-2275dx left two usb ports not working after OS install.

    Hi all.
I had to remove my windows 8(Upgraded to Pro before) install due to compatibility with certain programs and I was not very satisfied with the results.
So I had an extra cd key for windows 7 x64 home premium.
    Everything went smooth.
I had all my drivers installed.
    I installed Direct X also.
But when I tried to use my tutle beach headset it would not install the driver for the headset or even make the sound when a device is mounted.
So I checked device manager and I saw three yellow excelemation errors.
two were "Universal Serial Bus(USB) controller"
    one was "SM bus controller"
I have installed the catalyst drivers multiple times but no dice.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Happy Holidays.

Why is Time machine backup not working after Mavericks upgrade?

I had the same problem due to the Fire Wire port.  Apple tested it told me it is OK!, I tried a new cable, and have tested both ports on my back up device.  I find it strange that as soon as I installed Mavericks.  The drive does work using USB.  It could be a coincidence, I don't absolutely know at this point, my back up drive ports could stop working, but I doubt it!

  • Security and privacy system preferences not working after Lion install.  What to do?

Security and privacy system preference not working after Lion install.  Not sure if it happen with Lion installer or after updating. What to do?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” (without the quotes) and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.
