CDrom usage on solaris 10

Hi ,
I installed Solaris 10 , but cannot play any CD or DVD.
I'm using the JS3 console.
When i put a CD in my ASUS DVD or NEC DVD-writer JS3
ejects him after 10 seconds without playing anything.
Hints ?
Hans

Are you presented with the same problem when logged into the CDE desktop ?
If you have this problem utilizing BOTH desktops, try this procedure as it may solve your problem.
Log into, either CDE or Java Desktop, as " root "
and type the following in a terminal mode :
# svcadm enable smserver
Good luck, John.

  • Shared memory:  apache memory usage in solaris 10

Hi people, I have setup a project for the apache userID and set the new equivalent of shmmax for the user via projadd. In apache I crank up StartServers to 100 but the RAM is soon exhausted - apache appears not to use shared memory under solaris 10. Under the same version of apache in solaris 9 I can fire up 100 apache startservers with little RAM usage. Any ideas what can cause this / what else I need to do? Thanks!

    a) How or why does solaris choose to share memory
    between processes
from the same program invoked multiple times
    if that program has not
been specifically coded to use shared memory?Take a look at 'pmap -x' output for a process.
Basically it depend on where the memory comes from. If it's a page loaded from disk (executable, shared library) then the page begins life shared among all programs using the same page. So a small program with lots of shared libraries mapped may have a large memory footprint but have most of it shared.
If the page is written to, then a new copy is created that is no longer shared. If the program requests memory (malloc()), then the heap is grown and it gathers more private (non-shared) page mappings.
Simply: if we run pmap / ipcs we can see a
    shared memory reference
for our oracle database and ldap server. There
    is no entry for apache.
But the total memory usage is far far less than
    all the apache procs'
individual memory totted up (all 100 of them, in
    prstat.) So there is
some hidden sharing going on somewhere that
    solaris(2.9) is doing,
but not showing in pmap or ipcs. (virtually
no swap is being used.)pmap -x should be showing you exactly which pages are shared and which are not.
    b) Under solaris 10, each apache process takes up
    precisely the
memory reported in prstat - add up the 100
    apache memory details
and you get the total RAM in use. crank up the
    number of procs any
more and you get out of memory errors so it
    looks like prstat is
pretty good here. The question is - why on
    solaris10 is apache not
'shared' but it is on solaris 9? We set up
    all the usual project details
for this user, (jn /etc/projects) but I'm
    guessing now that these project
tweaks where you explicitly set the shared
memory for a user only take
effect for programs explicitly coded to use
    shared memory , e.g. the
oracle database, which correctly shows up a
    shared memory reference
    in ipcs .
We can fire up thousands of apaches on the 2.9
    system without
running out of memory - both machines have the
    same ram !
But the binary versions of apache are exactly
    the same, and
    the config directives are identical.
please tell me that there is something really
simple we have missed! On Solaris 10, do all the pages for one of the apache processes appear private? That would be really, really unusual.

  • Ressource Usage under Solaris

    Hi everybody,
I'm a newbie and I created four data bases on Oracle 9i under
Solaris. Ech data bases uses about 400 MB of memory. Is that a
normal value? Basically there is no data in the data bases, yet.
I created them as general data bases with the wizard.
Thanks for any comments or hints.
    Best regards,
    Ingo

    Michael ,
If you are looking for the amount of physical memory on your system,
use the 'prtconf' command. If you would like to get some virtual
memory page statistics, use the 'vmstat' command. If you would like to
find out about the memory allocated to a particular process, use
'ps -e -opid,vsz,rss,args'. The only problem is the different behavior on
different versions of Solaris. Check the man pages to find out about
    the usage of each command.
A good tool is 'prtmem' in the MemTool package which can be
downloaded anonymously from playground.sun.com in /pub/memtool/
or goto www.solarisinternals.com . The MemTool tools are reported to
work on Solaris 2.6 to 2.8. The 'prtmem' tool will break down the
    memory usage as follows.
    1) Total Memory - approx. total memory
    2) Kernel Memory - memory allocated to the kernel
    3) Application - amount of anonymous pages in memory
    4) Executable & libs - amount of executable and shared library pages
    in memory
    5) File Cache - amount of file cache not on free list
    6) Free, file cache - amount of file cache on free list
    7) Free, free - memory that is free
Please note that the "Free, free" number is usually very close,
if not equal, to zero. This is due to the VM systems use of the free
    memory to cache files.
The ultimate resource for this type of info, from a kernel perspective, is
the "Solaris Internals" book written by Mauro and McDougall. I
    recommend it highly!

  • Swap space usage in solaris 2.6

    Hi
I'm confused abt how the OS uses the swap space in the solaris 2.6. My system has the following configuration.
    RAM - 2560 M.
Disk based memory for swap - 513 M (From 'top' / 'swap -l' command)
The 'df -k' over the "/tmp" directory is showing Total around 1.8 GB space for the "swap" volume mounted over "/tmp".
Does it mean that, only 513M of 1.8 GB is allocated for a swap slice?? BTW this is the only swap slice that our system has. So what's happening to the remaining part of 1.8 GB?? Is it getting wasted??
When does the OS exactly starts using the disk memory?? Is it like if the OS finds that the available RAM is not sufficient for its memory operations then it starts using the disk memory??
Any help in clearing my doubts would be highly apreciated.
    Rgds
    ravi

    Hi
Thanks for the response. I understand the concept of anonymous memory. But what is confusing me is the "/tmp" directory. The "df -k" command over the "/tmp" directory is always showing used % as 1%. Also the "swap -s" is never matching with the output of "df -k".. ( I suppose both represent the Virtual attributes of swap space i.e. disk backed memory + portion of the RAM).
for example following is the output of the above commands at a particular instance.
    df -k
    swap 1908728 1768 1906960 1% /tmp
    tcsb.tcs.gs1::/users/tcsuser/tmp-> swap -l
    swapfile dev swaplo blocks free
    /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s1 32,1 16 1049744 84048
    tcsb.tcs.gs1::/users/tcsuser/tmp-> swap -s
    total: 589008k bytes allocated + 98672k reserved = 687680k used, 1908920k available
Is there anything i'm missing here??

  • Ranlib usage in Solaris 10 - Sparc vs i386

    Hi
I have applications which use ranlib (though obseleted, but legacy software) as a part to create static libraries. Now it works fine on the SPARC Solaris 10, but when the same software is compiled in i386 Solaris 10, the static libraries are not formed. Any pointers?
    Thanks in advance
    Regards

    Hi Clamage45
Subsequent to the posting, I dug a bit and found that ranlib was not the problem but gnumake. On the solaris10 SPARC I have gnumake.3.67 which seems to compile the object files and uses ar to create the static library fine. But on i386 Solaris 10, I have gnumake-3.80 and this does not seem to run ar implicitly when it finds that it is creating object files for an library archive. I had to explicity give the ar command for it to keep appending the object file(s) to create the archive.
My conclusion is the make rules between make-3.67 and make-3.80 have been changed and is no longer supports implicit rules for creating archive libraries.
Your input will be greatly appreciate
Thanks a ton for your ealier on

  • How to mount USB & CDROM drives from single user mode - Solaris boot disk?

    Hi All,
I need to carry out ufsrestore on a single newly replaced system disk (no redundancy / mirroring) from either USB or CDROM drives from the following steps:
    ( i ) GRUB => e, e, cdrom –s, Enter, b (boot from Solaris 10 x86 media).
( ii ) Choose menu 1 for Install Solaris Interactive Mode to reach single user mode.Below are the commands that I have tried in single user mode without success:
mount –r –F pcfs /dev/dsk/c1t0d0p0 /cdrom (after unmount Solaris CD)
mount: /dev/dsk/c1t0d0p0 is not a DOS filesystem.
    svcadm –v enable smserver
svcadm: Pattern ‘smserver’ doesn’t match any instances
    svcadm enable autofs
svcadm: Pattern ‘autofs’ doesn’t match any instances
    devfsadm
devfsadm: mkdir failed for /dev 0s1ed: Read-only file system
    mkdir /mnt
mkdir: Failed to make directory “/mnt”; Read-only file systemPart of the problem is due to the current READ ONLY filesystems which does not allow the creation of mount point such as /mnt.
I have been able to create both / root (/dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0) and /export/home (/dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0) filesystems with newfs that are awaiting for restore using ufsrestore.
The only option I am left with is to attach a secondary disk to install Solaris 10 on either of them before bring the system to multi-user mode so that service such as volmgt, autofs, volfs are available to access USB & CDROM drives.
Any suggestion on how to resolve this issue?
    Many thanks,
    Jack

    Hi JKGN,
Is the directory a located under the root filesystem. ie /a? Are there any other mount point for say USB drive as well? I am not in a position to try it out right now but will get back
to you soon on whether /a exist or not.
Btw, the last thing I managed to do on this system at the time was added a secondary 1TB internal disk with the intention to restore both / and /export/home data onto this disk while
making use of all the disk device management services such as the following services only available in a fully installed Solaris system (both single & multi-user modes) installed on the
    primary disk:

As a result, I am left with no option but the need to rebuild this system with only a single primary disk while in single user mode. However, the single user mode that I am in is the
one from Solaris installation disk with restrictive (_cannot create folder for mount point or running disk management utilities_) capability such as those services just covered, compared to one from a completed Solaris installation system with full access to all filesystems and utilities / commands in general.
I would very much value your assistance on how to mount both CD & USB in this restrictive limited Read Only OS (assume that it is running from memory) in order to get complete access to
the blank primary disk so that full restore with ufsrestore could take place.
    Thanks in advance,

  • Solaris install problems on Ultra10/300

    Hi all.
I'm having a bit of an issue installing Solaris 9 on my Ultra 10. I issue the boot cdrom command, the solaris installer starts at openprom, then gives what looks to be a kernel dump, and the system reboots. I've had this issue on an Ultra 30 as well, and haven't any idea how to get around it. I have Solaris 10 (I think Sun is calling it Solaris Express) installed on the Ultra 10 now, although, at first, it gave me the same errors.
Any thoughts or ideas would be welcome,
    Thanks,

  • License for datacenter usage?

    Hi,
Im a bit confused about the usage of solaris 10 and other sun software (all use the same license almost) in a datacenter for internet applications:
the following paragraphs say its only allowed on an extranet deployment or am i wrong?
    d) Commercial Use. You may use Software internally for
    your own commercial purposes.
    (e) Service Provider Use. You may make Software
functionality accessible (but not by providing Software
itself or through outsourcing services) to your end users in
an extranet deployment, but not to your affiliated companies
    or to government agencies.

I am not a lawyer, but I read that as do not give the software to other people except your employees. I do not think it has anything to do with what kind of application you use it for. I beleive sun would be thrilled if you used sol 10 for the purpose you mention. (and then purchase a service contract).

  • CDROM Mount Solaris 10 x86

    BACKGROUND:
In support of the U.S Navy, I've developed an IETM in XML and distributed it as PDF documents (in the Windows XP environment) meeting the current Military standards. My new tasking; However, is to ensure that this project can run on both the Solaris x86 platform and the Solaris SPARC platform. This IETM CDROM is classified and the contents may not be downloaded to any storage device. The IETM must run from the CDROM drive.
    PROBLEM:
The 1st time I install the CDROM into Solaris x86, the CDE interface named the CDROM the following: CDROM/CDROM0/IETM, (IETM is the CD's label I named it). This causes all my external links between the 19 documents that comprise this IETM become invalid (not to work). This is only true when the link needs to travel up to a higher directory. If the link requires a location to a lower sub-directory, the links work as designed. I believe this is due to the fact that the links do not need to read the CDROM label when moving down directories.
So, I go off to the development box and try and reconfigure my links to accomodate Solaris' mount naming conventions. I link to the following: CDROM/CDROM0/IETM.
This time when I insert the CD into the CDROM drive, CDE interface names the CD, CDROM/CDROM0/IETM#2. ?!?!?!?!
I'm relatively new to Solaris, but well versed in computer programming and computer architectural design , but I'm totally confused with this 2 week old problem.
Does anyone have the time to respond to my dilema? Am I overlooking a very basic solution or is this new tasking of mine going to send me back through the development process to accomodate Solaris?

The missing pieces can be found in the UFS partition on the CD#1,
but Solaris can only mount UFS partitions on CPUs using the same
byte order that was used to create the filesystem. That is, Solaris
    SPARC can mount big-endian UFS filesystems intended for SPARC;
Solaris x86 can mount little-endian UFS filesystem intended for x86.
But you cannot mount a big-endian SPARC UFS filessystem on
Solaris x86 - and vice versa.
The solution is to download the Solaris 10 DVD installation image,
and setup the install server from the DVD. The DVD installation
image contains everything that is needed in the platform neutral
ISO9660 filesystem image. There's no need for
setup_install_server to access the UFS filesystem bits using the
    DVD.

  • Is Solaris 9 Intel mature enough for serious usage?

    Hello everyone,
I'm a Solaris newbie. I downloaded Solaris 8 Intel and installed a few times with and without success since Sun first released version 8 for free download. I had sucessfully installed Solaris 8 on Compaq Proliant Server and IBM Intel Xseries (with bad video) but failed on Dell PowerEdge (due to the lack of RAID and SCSI dirver or I didn't know where to get the drivers my hardware.
The reason I posed the question is that the System Requirement Note states the Solaris 9 x86 OE Customer Early Access software is not suitable for deployment on any production systems.
Is the current release of version 9 stable or final release? I'd rather not waste my bandwidth, time (It'd take me 3 days to download 3 iso images), CDs for beta releases.
    Please advise me.
    Thanks.
    Trent

Depends on what you mean by "serious usage". Like right now, it provides a electronic place for me to dump my school work to instead of bringing disks or blank CDs.
Overall, it's an alright system. Though, Solaris 9 was a little more difficult to set up on my old computer (probably more because of the computer itself rather than the software.)
But, I did it. Installed Solaris 9 on 32 MB of RAM on a Pentium MMX 166.

    I don't believe its possible.
Your best option is to install on another computer, setup a jumpstart server and netboot from there.
