Cdrw for pb3400

few months ago i see a 1996 powermac burning cd's with a IDE based LG cd recorder and using toast lite.I have the same recorder in my pc but im planning to conert it in an external usb recorder(i need to backup 500 MB only in installers from my powerbook, some of them are not coded- no .hqx no .bin no .sit extension). What version of toast i need for use it(i have macos 8.6 but i can upgrade to 9.1 if i need) or what other program can do the same thing(free and light if possible)?

Alan,
Even though the PB3400 does not officially support USB (32-bit), it does have the Texas Instruments 32-bit chip on the logic board. You do, however, require a minimum of OS 8.6 so you can install the USB Adapter Card Support.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=31132
Here also is a website discussing using a USB PC card on the 3400:
http://www.wwc.edu/~frohro/Cardbus/Cardbus.html
Please be aware that even a USB 2.0 PC card will still only run at the slower 1.1-speeds under 8.6 > 9.2.2. Also, the USB and FireWire PC cards do not supply the bus power required to run peripherals like a USB 2.5" HD, so I don't know how much voltage is required for the USB memory stick.
You may be better served with this configuration:
- Buy the SanDisk 6-in-1 PC Card Adapter (16-bit) for the PCMCIA card slot of the 3400; no drivers are required.
- Buy the SanDisk MS/MS Pro I/ II Reader (USB) for any computer that has a USB port.
- Buy a SanDisk xxxMB Memory Stick PRO.
All of the above can be seen at this link; just at the Products list on the left side. I imagine similar hardware is available from other vendors also.

  • USB adapter for PB3400/OS8.1

I have a PB3400 running OS8.1. I'd like to be able to connect a (PC compatible) USB memory stick to it, so I'm looking a for a USB adapter. The PB3400 has a slot for PCMCIA card. I've found a plenty of PCMCIA USB adapter cards but none will work with OS8.1. Are there any drivers available? Do I have any other options?
    Many thanks.

  • Can't burn CDRW for BootCamp drivers disk.  Error code 0x000003E8

I know I previously burned the bootcamp drivers on this MacBook. Now I've upgraded Bootcamp to the latest beta today (1.2) I can't burn the drivers disk! I have gone through 3 different CDRWs and they all fail! (I started with erasing the older drivers CDRW and the erase went fine.., then reburned it and it failed so I pulled out two never used CDRWs and they both failed too!)
Here is the very cryptic message I get:
    Burn Failed
The burn to the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857 drive failed. 0x000003E8
Has my drive died? Could three CDRWs in a row all be bad? They are 4x-12x rated Philips. The bootcamp software showed it was trying to burn at 10x speed (but it was greyed out so I couldn't change the speed to anything slower).. Does anyone have a clue what's going on here?

Well, trying CD-Rs will not really solve the error because as I discovered, the RWs that Boot Camp told me failed to burn actually burned just fine! I discovered before trying to reerase them and try burning them with a different application that the contents were all proper and in tact. It is Boot Camp's error. I am going to mark this as solved and leave feedback for the Boot Camp team about the error. Thanks for your input.

  • Cdrws

I have a  K7T Turbo 2 and just have a cdrw. My question is, it better to have a dvd- rom or cd-rom and just use the cdrw for burning???

my pc is an overkill actually...
    1 dvd-rom
    1 cd-rom
    1 cd-rw
soon to be added, 1 dvd-rw
     :D
each drive has its intended purpose for my system.
but everything's up to you... anyway cd-rw is built for both reading and writing
the best optical drive to install in addition to cd-rw would be a dvd-rom.

  • How to back up iTunes to a CD-RW

Hi, I am trying to back up my entire itunes library.. by burning it onto a CD-RW. How can I do this?
    Thanks!

How big is your library... Mine won't fit onto a CDRW for sure as it is pretty huge... that might be the first issue.
If you library is small just create a "playlist" (File>NewPlaylist) and drag the stuff you want to burn into the playlist folder... and then click on "Burn" from the iTunes control panel in the upper left corner. If your lib is huge you will need a bunch of CDRWs or a DVDR if yu have a DVD burner

  • IDE problems with KT4V-L?

Hi, I am trying to resolve a long standing problem with regards to cd/dvd drive issues - both with reading and burning. I have had a system based around the KT4V-L mobo for about 3 years now and about 2 years ago I started experiencing problems with my msi cdrw drive- problems reading and burning discs, both blank and written. I tried various possible solutions i.e. new cable, different ide placement, firmware upgrade, different burning software, via drivers, various WXP tweaks, mobo bios upgrade/tweaks, even a fresh XP install (vanilla xp pro) but nothing would stop me churning out coasters. I then thought that the drive itself must be faulty and swapped it for a new one only to have exactly the same problem. I limped on for a good while (everything else works just fine) until dual layer dvd burners got cheaper and decided to swap my cdrw for a samsung dl dvdrw. Still same problems... especially with dvds. Another fresh install of WXP pro (sp2) has yielded no improvement nor has trying mandrake linux (ver. 10). Anyhoo, my thinking now is that there may be a fault with the onboard ide controller although my HDD has always worked fine... As I said before, I have tried all the different placements/settings with regards to ide connections/cables/jumpers and bios settings.
Sorry to bang on for so long but it has been driving me slowly mad for a good while   Any help gratefully received as I am on the verge of binning the mobo and just buying a new (different) one...

Thanks for the response osnavi, the first cdrw drive was well under a year old when I changed it and had only had light to medium use. I agree that the power supply could be better but the fact remains that everything worked perfectly for the first year-ish. At that time I actually had another dvd drive alongside the cdrw with no problems until this issue arose- I then had to physically remove the dvd drive to get the cdrw working at all. I currently have my HDD as primary master and the dvdrw as secondary master but as I said previously I have tried all the various settings available. The HDD is running in ultra dma mode 6 and the dvdrw is ultra dma mode 2 - I did have to reset this as WXP had demoted it to PIO mode only, presumably due to multiple errors... Re. the power supply issue, is it possible that the system ran fine for a year (with slightly more load due to the extra dvd drive) and then just b0rked out? I have had no other issues at all with this system and I am a fairly application heavy user (photoshop, quark, fps games etc). Is it also possible that the upgraded bios may have caused the problem as I did flash it from the original OTB bios to version 1.9 as directed by the msi live update system?
    Thanks again for your interest.

  • MS 6712...opinions

I am planning to give my bro his own PC and he doesn't really like to net so I'd give him a simple home unit.
I was thinking of the MS 6712 options...Athlon XP 2000-2500+, WIN XP HOME ED, 128MB VGA, Sorround Sound for his games and A CDRW for me so I can burn from his unit when I'm at his place.
Any of you guys have any comments on the performance of the m-board and any other suggestions for other components? Surely MSI folks will buil-up on the m-boards and promote higher mods but I don't really have the money for a hi-end PC.

  • ID for USB connected cdrw

What designator is correct for the cdrw device when connected via USB-IDE device, sc, sg, or sr?
Can it be Udev rules setup in any of the above?

That's possible.  The same CD-drive was listed as /dev/sr0 on another laptop.  It was with older kernel and udev versions.  That laptop isn't working anymore so I can't test further.
When you plug-in the USB drive, udev should create a device in /dev.  By comparing the content of /dev before and after plugging the drive, you can find what device represent your drive.
Here's what dmesg give me when I plug it in:
scsi0 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices

  • Cannot load device driver for DVD/CDRW - Satellite 1110

I have a Satellite 1110 and something has gone wrong with my DVD/CDRW and it will not read any CDs. It is reported as a MAT****A UJDA730 DVD/CDRW but the device status comes up as:
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the device but the error just returns. I cannot find a driver for it either on the manufacturer's web site or Toshiba's. I don't want to use the Product Recovery CD-ROM as it implies I will lose all software and data on the hard drive.
Can someone advise how to recover from this situation?
    Thanks

    Hi
Firstly you dont any driver for the CD/DVD drive. The drive uses the standard Windows OS driver and its not necessary to install it additional.
I assume there could be something wrong with the registry entry.

  • Firmware for GCC 4240N CDRW/DVD Drive

I tried both the CD image version and the diskette version of the firmware update and neither will update my drive to version 0214.
The update facility recognizes my drive as HL-DT-ST CDRW/DVD Drive GCC-4240 Firmware Version 0111, but tells me that no update is necessary.
    Anyone else experience this problem?

You're not limited to the exact optical drive that came in it.
I do not know whether there are incompatibilities with some drives, but I do know that some facilities were upgrading them with drives that would also burn DVDs (not recommended by me, due to the limitations of the slower G3 processors).
For one that is sure to work, check these links:

  • New drivers / firmware for CDRW? and which one do i have?

hi, i have the Dragonwriter, the sticker on it says made in June 2002.  It reports during startup, and in Device Manageras teh CD-RW MS-8340 firmware version 100d.  It also says the driver is from Microsoft 4-23-99, but then goes on to say no driver is loaded or required for this device.
    Very weird.
I can't yet find any update files on the MSI site ... i found a description of the 8340 which is listed as having a writing speed of 48x ... but mine is more like the CR-40, as it only has 40x according to the label on the box and front of the burner.  So shouldn't my drive be reporting something other than 8340?
In any event, the Nero 5.5 s that came with the drive only lets me burn at up to 32x !  Have i been ripped off somehow?
so i'm all confused, can someone please set me straight as to if i need to upgrade or change my drivers/firmware/bios etc?  And is it Nero's fault or my drives fault that i can't get the option to write at 40x?
    thanks!

thanks guys!  yes, now that i've put a 40x disc in the drive, it is indeed now giving me the option to burn at that speed!
i still need to sort out a problem with the firmware updater.  This is what it spits out:
Detecting CD-ROM drives (check 2 IDE cables, 4 ports)
    Checking IDE #1 ok
    Checking IDE #2 ok
    No CD-ROM drive are detected
that seems weird eh?  I most certainly do have my cd-rw on Secondary Master, and cd-r on Secondary Slave.  Perhaps is this the stupid message it returns with if the firmware doesn't need updating?
btw, how to know what firmware i have?  It says 'firmware revision 100d' in Device Mangler, if that is the correct one.  Does anyone know to what version the vow-dos.exe updater is set to update to?
    cheers,
    charlie

  • New DVD CDRW needed for Toshiba R10 - Which are compatible?

Can anyone tell me what kind of DVD-ROM CDRW or DVDRW drives are compatible with my Toshiba Satellite R10??
The current drive is a Toshiba SD C2612 (DVD-ROM) but I want a burner to back up photos etc.
Any suggestions welcome. Particuarly if I get it on ebay UK (a link would be great).

    Please see this post [http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/click.jspa?searchID=1972928&messageID=110444]
It talks about Tecra M5, but same principle applies.
Note that the Satelllite R10 as sold in Dixons and PC World in UK was shipped with UJ-841.
UJ-840 supports all popular DVD RW formats, while UJ-841 adds DVD Dual Layer.

  • I need help with firmware for the MS-8348 [48x16x48x CDRW]

Well, if Yall could help me I'd be happy.
Ive a 900 Athlon with a pcChip mobo, and an MSI MS-8348 48x16x48x cd-RW drive. HD is primary Master, CD-rw secondary master.
I run XP, but there is a large problem. when I try to install anything from CD, it crashes the system about 1/3 of the way through the install. Games like Sim City 3000 or NeverWinter Nights and such can't install.
I was told that it was a firmware problem, and I needed to update it.
How can I update, when i copy the two files included in the download to c:, run it, and it says my drive is not recognized? It told me to run in real DOS mode, but how can I get there in XP?
    Thank you for you help.

I run all my games on WME so that I have more RAM available for the game (XP is memory hog) and because my flight control setup (CH Force FX {14 programmable buttons}, CH Pro Throttle {20 programmable buttons}, CH Pedals) is not recognized in WXP.
I received HALO as a birthday gift. It loaded fine. I ran it and it continually locked up at the main menu screen of the game. The Audio part of the game continued to advance, but the video got stuck. My wife loaded the game and tried to run it and got the same results, she has only WXP for an OS on an MSI K7T 266 Pro 2 RU motherboard. She upgraded her MSI Geforce3 Ti-200 TD Pro drivers from MSI 44.03 to NVIDIA 52.16 and HALO then ran flawlessly.
MSI has upgraded drivers 45.32 and Nvidia has upgraded drivers 45.23. Both of these drivers locked up my machine each and everytime I installed them. My machine runs the NVIDIA 56.12 drivers without any problem on Windows XP PRO. I had to uninstall the MSI 45.32 and/or NVIDIA 45.23 drivers and reload the MSI 44.03 drivers to get WME to boot up. HALO will not run on the 44.03 drivers. One of the techs from microsoft called me at home the last two nights in a row to try and resolve this issue. Conclusion at end of night one was updated video drivers needed to be installed. Conclusion at end of night two was that there was a hardware problem with the the conclusion that video card was not accepting drivers above 44.03 for the Windows Millenium Edition Operating System. There was no listing at either NVIDIA or MSI video driver site for any drivers beyond 44.03 other than NVIDIA 45.23 or MSI 45.32 respectively.
The burning question is this: As with some of the previous NVIDIA drivers are the new releases compatible with all of the operating systems? I ask this because looking in the NVIDIA 52.16 drivers folder that gets extracted I see references in the read me file to W98,W98SE,WME. Why does the MSI Geforce 3 Ti-200 card accept the NVIDIA 52.16 drivers with WXP PRO and not the NVIDIA 45.23 not the MSI 45.32 drivers with WME (and I assume W98 & W98SE?)
    Interested in the response.
    Thanks.

Judging from the problems I and several other people on the forum have mentioned, there seems to be a problem with the nVidia 45.23 drivers and video. I get a grey screen with vids unless i turn down the hardware accel to almost nothing. Other people can get vid to show on their tv out. So if you havn't tried an older driver version yet, maybe you could use the good old xp driver rollback in the video device properties.
