CDs/DVDs always get stuck in new iMac

I just bought the 24 inch iMac from the apple store a month ago. Why is it that most of the Cds/DVDs get stuck in the drive and I have to use the support "paperclip" method to get them out? A computer that costs this much shouldn't have such a fundamental problem - anyone else have this issue?

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58641 explains why this may happen.
If none of the disks you are using have anything written on their label side, or any sticky labels, and fit the required size shape, and thickness, then I'd take it to the shop. The paperclip method was retired several years ago. You may have damaged your drive if you used a paperclip.

I really don't appreciate the fact that no one from Apple seems to be dealing with the many, many threads that have started on this topic since iOS 7 came out. In any event, I seem to have solved my problem with a full software restoration -- that is, iOS software restoration.
I clicked on "Restore iPhone..." which does a complete reinstall of the iOS but also all apps, photos, songs, etc. Took about 45 minutes, but seems to have worked.
I had previously tried reverting to a backup of my iPhone, but that did not solve the problem. Only a full restore solved it.

  • Firefox 3.6.5, running Windows 7, always gets stuck at the 80% when trying to install initially.

I've been a long time user of Mozilla Firefox, and have recently upgraded computers, which gave me Windows 7 Home Premium. For the past couple of days I have been trying to install Firefox 3.6.5 but it always gets stuck when its 80% done. Is there something I could do to stop that, or do I need to use a different version of Firefox, and if so, where can I download one?

Do a clean (re)install and download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
You can skip the step to create a new profile, that is not necessary for this issue.

I use Time Machine to back up my entire computer with my external hard drive. I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was? I want to make sure I will still have various important files on my new computer, like my songs in iTunes, my photos in iPhoto, etc, etc. Thanks so much in advance!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one. • Network Print Jobs Always Get Stuck in Queue

    Hello,
I have, perhaps, the most frustrating problem on the planet.  In my home network, I have a HP Color LaserJet 2600n connected to my main PC, with 2 other PC's on the network.  All 3 run Windows 7.  Printing from my main PC works fine, but if I try to print over the network, the print job always gets stuck in the queue.  I can see it stuck in the queue on my main PC, but I can't do anything about it.  I can't delete it, nothing.  If I restart the spooler, then it magically prints and clears the queue, but it's annoying to have to do that all the time.  I've reinstalled the drivers several times to no avail.  Tips?
    RPGillespie

I have a similar problem, I have a directly connected 1300 and a network P3015. The 1300 is connected via USB, the 3015 is connected by RJ45 cable right to the router. Both printers have their print queues get stuck, but only from my HP Pavilion Elite HPE running HP-installed Windows 7. All the other machines in the office can use the 3015 printer perfectly well. One is an older Pavilion using XP-Pro, another is a Dell using XP-Pro and the third is a Lenovo laptop using Windows 7. All our toners are not refills (seems like a stupid suggestion that the toner cartridge could cause a queue to lock up). The problem is definitely between my machine and the HP printers. I have a Brother printer and a couple of Seiko/Epson printers that all work perfectly fine.
Rebooting several times a day is getting old.

  • ITunes installation always get stuck on "Initializing QuickTime types"

Whenever i try to install iTunes and QuickTime it always get stuck on "Initializing QuickTime types."
I am not able to update my software!
    Please Help!

    Me Too!!
I have XP SP3. Intel pentium 4 2.6Ghz. 4Gb RAM. 116GB open on one HDD, 72GB open on the other.
    I'm on Admin access level.
I'm trying to install iTunes 7.7 bundled with Quicktime 7.5.
    I emptied my temp folders.
I shut down my antivirus and anti-spyware.
I shut down all non-essential startup menu items.
My folder names dont have unusual characters.
I have uninstalled all versions of Quicktime and iTunes and iPod updaters from my machine.
    Still no luck.
When Installing the Quicktime application, the entire machine locks up when it gets to the "Initializing Quicktime types" segment of the install.
I have left the machine on its own for up to 14 hrs and it never does regain normal function.
The only way to regain control is to reset or hard shutdown.
Can someone please respond to this so my daughter can use her 2 month old graduation present?
    Thank you so very much.
    PS:
How about standalone downloads for each application?
And, how about patches so the download doesnt take so long and the installation doesn't need to be so intrusive?

  • Migration assistant ALWAYS gets stuck, how to fix?

I have been having perpetual troubles with the migration assistant. It always gets stuck on the final stage of transferring. This has happened with my previous transfer attempts and now is happening again as I try to transfer from 17 inch 2.3 ghz MBP to a 17 inch 2.4 ghz mbp.
When I first tried to transfer everything over, it got stuck on "transferring network and other settings". The progress bar looks about 99% done. But it sits there FOR-E-VER and NEVER finishes. So I erased and reinstalled os x fresh on the destination computer, and tried all over again without selecting network settings to transfer. Now it has been having less than 1 minute remaining "transferring files to support applications" for over an hour now.
The same thing happened last time I migrated from a powerbook G4 to a mbp 17 inch. What is going on?????
The migration assistant seems to be a piece of junk.

The Migration Assistant is known (by users of this board) to be problematic between PowerPC and Intel. If you succeeded the first time, it may be the problems the second go around even though they are between Intel Macs, is from any Rosetta applications and plugins installed on your older Intel Mac.
Here's the user tip Kappy and I wrote about migrating between platforms:

  • Cd/dvd drive gets stuck

    Hi,
I have had this recurring problem for two years. My CD/DVD drive will not spit out certain CDs DVDs. They get stuck when I try to eject; then they start running again. They always eventually come out, but it is extremely irritating. I've taken it to the Apple store, but they told me that it is a flawed disc. Anyone else have this problem and does anyone know how I can manually eject discs when this occurs next?
    Thanks.

nother help source (if you haven't already done so).
Go to your OS Help Menu. In the search field type cd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility. Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

  • What is the best CD and DVD to use with my new iMac Intel?

Guys, please help. I am not great on the computers and need a bit of help and advice. Just brought a brand new iMac Intel G5. This is to replace my older but much loved iMac G4, which is very simple to use. Have had nothing but trouble with the new one which was especially brought to copy CD's and DVD's and to have a good play with. After much head scratching have just been told by Apple help desk that the new intels may not like CD-R. These disks worked fine on my old Mac, brought a new pack (100). I can copy information and burn to these disks using Disk Utility. BUT they can only be read on the Intel iMac, not on my old mac or PC at work. This is only simple word and pdf files, nothing complicated. Copying and burning DVD's even more of a nightmare. What makes and formats do you recommend that I use? I can copy to DVD+R. Your advise would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Townie1978

  • Dvd playback poor quality on new iMac

Upgraded from 2006 iMac 24" to a new iMac 27" / 2.9 Ghz, nVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M Graphics (512MB), with external Superdrive. My old iMac played standard DVDs with very good quality at full screen. The new iMac plays standard (commercial) DVDs but the video quality is poor, inferior to the old model. Is this due to the graphics card, or just a reality with the Retina display on this iMac, or some other reason?  Do I need to purchase a Blu-ray player and third party playback software to get better resolution?
    Thanks.

Yes regular DVD's were not intended to display in higher resolutions. You can try decreasing the screen resolution while watching these movies then changing it back. Or go with Blu-Ray and 3rd Party Software.

  • My Mac ibook G4 always get stuck

    Hi people
I have an ibook G4 laptop, There was no problems. To tell you guy's the truth i formated it. But i tryed to format it lots of times. But after a while it get stuck.. Even the reinstalling the osx. But Some how i installed the OSX. But now i can't go inside. Always it get stuck. Some times i can go inside & then it get stuck after a while. But sometime for the beginning it's stuck. Plz help me. why is this happing. Plz help me

    Welcome back to Apple Discussions!
We are very glad that you posted a new topic!
It sounds like you reinstalled the OS and are still having problems with the iBook freezing up. Is this correct? Could you elaborate on how you formatted it? The usual choice is "Mac OSX Extended (Journaled)". The other choice is "UNIX File System" which is probably not what you want unless you have special reasons for having it.
Can you boot off of your install disc? If so, navigate to Disk Utility and verify and repair if necessary both permissions and the disk. Repair until all problems are gone. If you cannot repair the disk, please post back.
It may be that the freezing that you are experiencing is actually hardware related rather than software related. If you had trouble installing the OS and it took a very long time to do it, you might have logic board problems. Some of these problems are caused by a failure of the ball grid array that holds the chips to the logic board. This is a failure of the solder joints. However, many people have had a lot of success at fixing this problem by making and installing some home made shims which make the chips have better contact to the board. If you think this may be your problem, we can post some links to instructions on how to do this.
Please post back with a little more detail on how the OS installation went and how long it took. Then we will know better how to advise you.
    Good luck!

  • HELP!!..Window is Dead...need to get music to new iMAC

My windows machinerecently dies a horrible death but I still have my iPOD.
Is it possible to transfer the music/playlist that are currently on my iPOD to my new iMAC?
Or do I have to start from scratch?

The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you prefer something more automated there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others as well, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Senuti Mac Only
    iPodRip Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only
    iPod.iTunes Mac Only
    PodView Mac Only
    iPodAccess Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac & Windows
    PodUtil Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac & Windows
The transfer of purchased content to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7, look under under File>"Transfer Purchases from iPod". A paragraph on it has been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting to your computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "'Erase and Sync") will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back up your iTunes. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.
