CDs & DVDs system preferences button missing

It seems that the button of the 'CDs & DVDs' system preferences button is missing. Where did it go or, how can I reinstall it ?

System preference button?

When I goto system preferences.. my print and fax button is all messed up. It's like a random image of a light switch, with half the word print and fax chopped off. How can i restore this icon? thanks

Quit System Preferences if it is open, and choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Enter ~/Library/Caches/ as the folder's location, throw away the item named com.apple.preferencepanes.cache inside, and then restart System Preferences.

'DISPLAY FUNCTION' under system preferences is MISSING!

Please help! i have connected my mac with an external monitor but when i want to change the resolution etc, the option 'displays' under 'system preferences' is not there!!!

System preference icons missing

Since installing Lion, the icons on my system preferences pane have all changed to the same icon as the system preferences app. i.e just the cogs.
Can anyone tell me how this may have happened and how I can revert back to the standard images please? The selections are all there, but all showing the same cog image.
I have seen some previous discussions about removing the apple.com/preferencepanes cache but I dont have it in my Library.

It's not a folder, it should be a single file.
From your user account, go to the /System/Library/PreferencePanes/ folder and see if the items in there have unique icons, or if they all look the same. If they do look the same then the problem may be with the launch services configuration in your system. The launch services is the configuration that pairs up files with their handler programs (ie, .txt files with TextEdit), so the system can open them properly when you open the file directly in the Finder.
To reset the launch services, open the Terminal utility (in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder) and run the following commands (the first one is long, so you might copy and paste it):
cd /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/
./lsregister -kill
./lsregister -seed -all system,local,user

My system preferences are missing

At some point in the past month, my system preferences have disappeared. I am an admin on my machine, but although the other admins have their system prefs visible, I do not. I could create a new account and that may work, but I'm wondering if there is perhaps an easy fix or if it might be a recurring problem. Any thoughts?

Has System Preferences disappeared from the Apple memu, or from the Dock?
If it's from the Dock, open the Applications folder, then drag the item System Preferences to the Dock; wait for the exisiting items to part, then park System Preferences onto the Dock.

System Preferences Icon Missing.

Stange bit of business this. Yesterday everything was peachy. Today when I booted the system I get this instead of the regular icon!

Go to Applications > Right click System Preferences > Show Package Contents > Contents > Resources > Scroll down to prefApp.icns > Right click and Copy Item > Go to your Dock > Right click System Preferences > Options > Show in Finder > Now you are in Applications folder, right click System Preferences > Get Info > Click the icon at the top > Press keys on your keyboard "Command+V".
If this doesn't work, try restarting your Mac.

Network System preferences pane missing

Went to adjust network preferences and unable to find network system pre. pane. May have deleted it accidently.
Do not have high speed connection so most of my updates from 10.3.7 to 10.3.9 would have to be done all over again.
Is there better alternative than a total reinstall of the OS?

Do you see a Network Preference Pane in your Macintosh HD/System/Library/PreferencePanes Folder?
If not, it is probably gone and you can replace it by extracting the file from your Panther System Disk with Pacifist.

System Preferences gone!!!! Noobie

I recently purchased a G5 without the install disk and the System Preferences is missing in action and no where on the HD's...I looked everywhere!!! I do have an opportunity to purchase Leopard version 10.4, but can I upgrade back to my current version for free? Or is there some way of restoring the System Preferences without buying any new software?

Boot up from your Leopard install DVD by inserting it, restarting, and holding down C at boot time.
Then, follow the instructions to do an Erase & Install. This will completely wipe everything from the hard drive and reinstall everything from scratch.
If that sounds like overkill, keep this in mind: When buying a used Mac, there's no telling what sort of hacks, security holes, pirated software, keyloggers, password sniffers, or other even riskier stuff that may have been left on it by its previous owner. Using such a pre-owned Mac when you don't know its history is a Very High Security Risk. I would never even hook a used Mac up to the internet without a reformat and reinstall from the original install discs.

How do I recover my System Preferences?

My System Preferences is missing off of my MacBook along with Time Machine and other essential applications. I run Snow Leopard Mac OS X 10.5.8 but I do not own the installation DVDs. I have repaired the disk permissions to no avail. I cannot even change the Date/Time or change my Energy Saver Preferences. For example, when I attempt to open the Energy Saver Preferences my Finder takes me to "MacintoshHD/System/Library/PreferencePanes/EnergySaver.prefPane/Contents...within the Contents folder there is 'version.plist', 'Info.plist', 'CodeResources' and three folders, "_CodeSignature", "MacOS", and "Resources". Now, the only file I've clicked is "MacOS" which opens to "EnergySaver". When I click on that file, the Terminal program opens, which concludes with "-bash: /System/Library/PreferencePanes/EnergySaver.prefPane/Contents/MacOS/EnergySaver : cannot execute binary file
logout" My System Preferences is nowhere to be found on the computer. I've clicked System Preferences under the Apple drop-down menu in the upper-left corner and NOTHING happens...no color wheel, no computer humming, nothing. Can anyone help?

1. Snow Leopard is 10.6 not 10.5. Why do you not own the installations disks? Where did you get the OS to install from? If you are missing applications you need the disks to reinstall them.

HELP! No System Preferences

Just bought an iBook (dual USB) running OSX: 10.3.9 as a starter computer/gift.
For some reason, the 'System Preferences' application was deleted by the previous owner.
I've downloaded and installed : MAC OSX Update combo10.3.9
but system preferences is still missing some critical files.
I have an old Tiger install disc, but this computer only has a cd drive, not DVD.
If anyone has that OS, or an install disc with System Preferences on it (you can use Pacifist to extract just that file), and email it to me, I'd be so grateful.
I can't think of any other way to get this file?

Not sure if there is a way to use a second Mac and FireWire Target Disk Mode, along
with a double-ended FW 400 or FW400/800 cable, depending on the computer's ports;
and maybe use the second Mac's optical DVD drive to install Tiger into the portable. In
some cases, that could be possible, but maybe not.
Or if you had a Panther 10.3 CD install disc set, just try for an "Archive & Install" and
then update the resulting new system w/ Combo 10.3.9 and the last newer parts such
as Java, quicktime, flash & shockwave players, compatible browsers; to make it work.
Someone may have an old retail 10.3 OS X disc they'd give you. Is there an local
Mac User Group in your area? Members of these sometimes have extra stuff, and at
times, a swap meet or school disposal sale could yield cheap or free stuff.
Sometimes, when System Preferences is missing, there is more gone than just the
item in the Applications folder with that name on it; there are several items together
in another location that the System Preferences launches; and it may be missing too.
These would all be required; often an installer puts the parts in their correct locations.
Pacifist could do that, if the correct packet were known & extracted from the 10.3 disc.
The Tiger route would be much better, if the computer's hard drive is large enough
capacity to support the OS X, Apps, and free space so they could work well. And
whatever RAM upgrade possible. Early dualUSB G3 white iBooks were also limited
in the 576MB to 640MB range of RAM, and relatively small original hard disk drives.
Perhaps the chipset in the external FireWire drive you have is not suitable for booting a
Mac OS DVD, or may have developed a defect? Could the lens in the drive need cleaned?
Some of the iFixit repair and upgrade instructions online may be helpful if you have to
go into the portable computer; some of the contributing users & owners here did some
of their own tech work at home, and have good ideas on keeping track of all the screws
and parts involved in performing a hard drive upgrade or optical drive exchange, etc. Of
the ideas, some included coding the screws in position by color (marking head/location.)
The dual USB white iBook G3 I had, developed a few small issues that would have cost
me significantly more to trust regional repair shops (+ shipping out, either way) so I found
a company in South Carolina that does a good job; they also have parts. wegenermedia.
Once the computer is opened, the additional updates often are little more than the cost
of parts over the initial investment; and the work is guaranteed. Check their web site.

In System Preferences, and CDs &DVDs, I've set the drop-down menu for audio CDs to open iTunes. can anyone tell me why it always reverts to Ignore?

Can anyone help me figure out why the setting in System Preferences and CDs & DVDs will always revert to Ignore when I set the drop-down menu to When you insert a music CD, to Open ITunes? I've tried iTunes Help and it told me exactly what I have been doing. I've even tried downloading iTunes again, to no avail. If anyone has had the same problem, please let me know. I would very much appreciate it.

I just went from OS 10.6 to 10.8. The arrow button is gone from the scrollbar. I do not see the option in "Systems Preference" any more. Am I missing something. If it is gone, is Apple going to bring it back?

Missing System Preference Icon

One of my System Preferences icons seems to be missing... I have been trying to disable DVD player from automatically launching when I insert a DVD, and the "CDs &DVDs" icon is missing in the System Preferences.
Any ideas?

Hmmmm.
When you say it is missing... In Sys Pref. in the second row called hardware there are normally 6 icons with the CD-DVD one being the first on the far left position. Is that space now empty?
If is not empty and you click on the space where it should be, what happens?
I'm running out of ideas. So... one more time with one extra deletion.

as well as
~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.systempreferences
then log out and then back in
then click on Sys Pref. to see if CD-DVD is back where it should be.
