CDs not recognised

I have a new notebook and it's failing to recognise some but not all CDs when I try to rip them for iTunes - they just spin round for a while and when I run a diagnostic it says there's no CD in the drive. It's always the same CDs and I have no idea what's different about them, I had no problem with them on my old computer. I don't know if there's any connection, but it's also confusing two CDs that I've loaded into iTunes - the tracks are as listed on the two CDs, but it's actually just copying the same one twice. I've tried deleting them both and emptying the recycle bin, then ripping the CD that hasn't copied properly.  The track listing looks correct, but when I play it the tracks are from the other CD that I've deleted! I'm baffled!!

Welcome to the HP Support Forums Beefasaurus!
I understand that the certain CD's are not being recognized by your computer. I will try my best to help you with this. To better guide you, could you please tell me the model or product number of your computer and the operating system that is running on it.
Here are some guides for How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number? and Which Windows operating system am I running?.
In the meantime, here is a document for Drive Cannot Read Discs (Windows 8)
Please let me know and I will be happy to help you with this.
Thank you and have a nice day!

  • CDs not recognised and automatically ejected

I have a 3 month old mac mini, yesterday I was putting CDs onto iTunes and having left a Cd in for maybe 20 mins (it went on to iTunes okay), I changed the "when you insert a CD" iTunes Preferences setting from "Import" to "Import and Eject". Immediately after that it would no longer recognise any CD and just automatically ejects them after about 20 seconds or so. I've reset the iTunes Preferences back to "Import" done the basic checks, repaired permissions, reset the SMC, but still nothing. The machine is still under warranty but my reseller informs me that it can be picked up within 5 days and then looked at and repaired, so maybe a 2 week turn around - definitely NOT acceptable!. Any help would be much appreciated.

You might try going to Apple Menu > System Preferences > CDs & DVDs and change the Music CD setting from Open in ITunes to ignore.
Probably best to quit iTunes before doing this.
Then insert a Music CD. It should show up on the desktop. Right-click on it and eject it.
Then go back to Sys Prefs' CDs & DVDs and reset Music CD back to Open iTunes.
Hopefully that will straighten things out. If not, there is probably just a "plist" file somewhere that needs to be deleted -- and some other poster will know what that is.

i dont even understand what this means, please help!!!!!!!!!!!! thanx xxxx

Well the report just tells basics of your setup and errors going on in short. Error -128 means either you or iTUnes cancelled the burn before it even started.
Your issue tho is you have no lower filter. you should have 2, and upper filter and a lower filter. Now Im not that good with the filter thing just yet, but I think if you reinstall itunes it will install the lower filter you need.
You will want to remove itunes AND quicktime in the control panel>Add/remove. Dis able any antivirus/security programs so they do not interferr with iTUnes and then download and install the latest iTunes from www.apple.com

  • Satellite A100-773: DVD/CD drive does not recognise CDs

    Hello Friends,
    I have Sattelite A100-773.
When I turned it on today it did not recognise any CDs anymore. It however recognises DVDs and also can Burn CDs with Nero.
As soon as I put in a CD it says (in German) something like "Access denied, Function not allowed".
It is a mystery to me what has happened. Until yesterday it was perfect. Now the same CDs (and I have tried 20) wouldn' work anymore.
I have tried system recovery to a previous point in time, but it does not help. In the Hardware manager tells me that everything is allright.
Do you have any idea what it can be?
    Thanks a lot
    Ognian

    Hi
In such case its not easy to say why it happens.
Generally if the drive is not able to read any medias either the hardware malfunctions or the CD or DVD is not compatible and supported.
But let us hope that the hardware is not corrupted.
Try to remove the drive from the device manager and reboot the notebook.
After the reboot the OS should recognise the drive again and should load the driver. Then you could try to test the drive again.
I found also a very great Microsoft document about:
How to troubleshoot issues that occur when you write data to a CD-R or CD-RW optical disc in Windows XP
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324129
    and this:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315350/
The other possibility is to use the Recovery CD to reinstall the OS.

  • Superdrive will not recognise CDs/Blanks

I just bought a powermac G5 , It was a rebuilt one that did not come with the original discs . Everything works fine on it , it has the last version of Tiger instaled . I went to burn some music to a disc from iTunes and it did nor even recognise that there was a disc in the drive( CD-R blank ) . I then made a few tests , first i loaded a DVD of a movie and it had no problem with that . Then I loaded a store bought music CD and same thing happened , it did not recognise the disc . Is this a hardware issue or a software issue ? is there a 3rd party software that we could use ?

    Hi Tracy!
If you call Apple Customer Service 1-800-767-2775, and provide the serial number of the Mac, you may be able to purchase replacement original system discs.
However, those will be for the version of OS, that was pre-installed when manufactured.
But, they will contain the bundled software, that is not included in a Full Retail Version, of a newer OS X. The Apple Hardware Test, specific to the Mac model, will also be included.
If the original OS, is lower than the current installed version of OS X, you will also need to purchase a corresponding Full Retail Version, of the desired system.

  • Mac Book Pro/iTunes will not recognise content of freshly burned cd

    Hi
So...my drive will recognise bought dvds and burned dvds. It will also recognise the content of shop bought cd. I can also burn cds and dvds. HOWEVER, it will not recognise cds burnt for me from other peoples (apple) machines. It simply says that the cd is blank. This is the same whether the cd is an mp3 cd, an audio cd or a datadisc. I have also tried to open the cd's in Quicktime and VLC but it still will not recognise.
Can anyone help m with this one? Do I just need to get a lens cleaner and if so are lens cleaners that you insert into the machine safe to use ?

    So...
    It would appear that now:
I cant burn dvds using toast or dvd studio pro.I can however play burnt dvds.
I cant play burnt cd's using itunes or quicktime but I can burn cds using iTunes.
Im so puzzled that any help would be brilliant.thank you.

  • 10.4  Update files not recognised

Using 10.4 on a second hand Powermac g4 from ebay, so no installation discs.
Successfully downloaded standalone updates 10.4.1....10.4.9 etc but first one (MacOSXUpdate10.4.1.dmg) not recognised so won't install. others recognised but won't work until first one installed.
Same with standalone combo update (MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.10) it isn't recognised. Using AOL dial up so it's taken seven attempts (overnight) to get a continuous connection for the complete Combo download. (Same with Software Updates Combo from Apple menu on desktop)
How do I get the right file which will be recognised ? or should I buy a full retail version of Tiger from ebay ? I'm concerned about all the probs people are having with updates as I am miles away from Apple Store for repairs and am a newbie. Many thanks for any replies.

    Welcome To  Discussions frenchbingo!
Which version of OS X is currently installed on the Power Mac G4?
If it is not Tiger 10.4.x, then as sig posted, you will have to purchase a set of install discs.
Exactly which model PowerMac G4 is it?
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is available?
If it is this model Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics), it had OS 8.6 or OS 9.0 installed, when manufactured in 1999.
Mac OS X Versions 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4, and 10.5, are complete system upgrades that must be purchased.
Once an OS has been installed, the point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.10 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Leopard 10.5.x, can be purchased at The Apple Store (U.S.).
    Leopard System Requirements
Jaguar 10.2.x, Panther 10.3.x, and Tiger 10.4.x, are no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Leopard 10.5.x, will be the most up to date OS.
But, if you know what to look for, Jaguar Full Retail CDs, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased, sometimes less expensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Jaguar and Panther are only on CDs, not DVDs.
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

Before upgrading to any OS X version, check to see if your Mac needs a Firmware Update.
If one is required, you must start the computer from a Mac OS 8 or Mac OS 9 System Folder on the computer's hard disk, not from a CD, in order to install it.
This Power Mac G4 Firmware Update 4.2.8 appears to be the one you would need to install.
Once Jaguar 10.2.x is installed, you can use the 10.2.8 Combo Update,
or if Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version of either OS.
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.10 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
    Jaguar System Requirements
-Power Mac G3 or G4, iMac, eMac, PowerBook G3 or G4, or iBook computer
    -128MB of physical RAM
-Supports all video cards shipped by Apple on Mac OS X-compatible systems. Quartz Extreme functionality is supported by the following video cards: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX, GeForce3, GeForce4 MX, or GeForce4 Ti; Any AGP-based ATI RADEON card. A minimum of 16MB VRAM is required.
-QuickTime Pro functionality requires a QuickTime 6 Pro key. The QuickTime 5 Pro key will not work after this software is installed.
-DVD Player requires a DVD-ROM equipped Macintosh with built-in FireWire.
Review these Apple documents for Panther System Requirements
    And Additional Panther System Requirements.
Additionally, Tiger 10.4.x ships on a DVD, so if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you will have to use an alternative method of installation.

  • Superdrive not recognising DVD

It seems I'm in a similar boat as several others in this forum. Have an eMac OSX10.3.9 with superdrive and have been burning and playing movies with no problems. In the last couple of months it will not recognise ANY DVD at all - including DVDs I have created myself and commercial movies that I have been able to previously read.
I have no probs reading CDs.
In every case after inserting a DVD it comes up with a message "You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OSX can read."
I have gone through the forum and taken up suggestions including:
    updating firmware: software indicated no update required;
    resetting NVRAM;
    using CD lens cleaner
using Path Burn – software indicated no patch required
I've noticed there's been several postings over the last couple of months regarding this or similar probs with DVD. Is it anything to do with recent upgrades? Hope this inspires further troubleshooting - I'm pulling my hair out! Or have I missed the posting with the magical solution?
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   800MHz, 78mb SDRAM, Superdrive

    Hi Paula
Apparently different wavelengths are used to read DVDs and CDs. I found a lot of stuff out by reading other postings on this site, plus some extra bits from the response to this posting.
Meantime, I upgraded to 10.4.8 to no avail. Then a friend recommended booting in Safe Mode and lo and behold, the offending DVDs were read. Unfortunately, because this mode uses limited extensions, it wouldn't actually play those that were movies, but at least I could get some data from some. The DVDs also played when I booted in OS9.
They also recommended creating a new user in OSX, which I did but had the same problem. Which tends to make me believe there is some offending extension, rather than a cleaning issue - a bit of a nightmare to sort out!
May just opt for a new drive - reluctantly.
    Cheers

  • When a cd is not recognised by gracenote data base, how do you ensure that it dowloads all together in recently added. I am trying to download a nn 8 disk compilation and itunes is putting all track 1/track2 etc together

i am trying to download a compilation of 8 cds which are not recognised by gracenote database. how do I ensure that the disks download seorately. My last try had all track 1/2/3 together rather than 1 - X in each cd

  • IMac disk drive not recognising discs

    Hi everyone,
I have a late 2009 iMac (21.5in 3.06Ghz) which is out of warentee. Recently, the disk drive has began not recognising disks, mainly CD's, while it still burns to CD-R's and plays most DVD's. I have reset the SMC and completed all other Apple troubleshooting steps with no luck. I phoned a repair specialist who told me that replacing it would be very expensive (£100-£200 I can't remember exactly) for what it is. I really do not want to pay this.
Does anyone have any other ideas, or has anyone suffered similar problems and managed to fix it? All help would be appreciated... easy points here!
    Regards,
    Nathan

    Suggestions...
Make sure that you don't insert CDs with stuck-on labels.  The internal tolerances are tight.
If the drive proves to be in need of repair or replacement, it may be more cost effective to buy an external USB-connected drive.

  • HP dv7 notebook PC does not recognise the dvd burner.

    Hi,
It's possible that this is a hardware issue with the optical drive itself, but try running automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Windows 7
Check if the drive is now working.
If it still doesn't work, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.

  • Macs and aiff files not recognised by older hi fi.?

I have burnt audio cds using external burner(itunes 8).They are on the cd as it plays in the mac but will not play on our cd player.Iread something online about macs and aiff files not recognised by older hi fi.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AudioInterchange_FileFormat
    any help please

    Several possible issues.
    1) Did you burn the CD as an audio format CD or did you just burn AIFF files to a CD as a data CD? CD players require an audio format CD, not just AIFF files burned to a CD as AIFF files.
    2) Older CD players can have problems reading burned CDs. Sometimes using a different brand CD, a longer burn time (slower burn speed) can help, but sometimes you just have to buy a newer player. CD-RW can present big problems unless it is specified as supported.

  • The replacement drive is not recognised by MBP

    Greetings all guru,
after my UJ-867 stopped reading/writing CDs/DVDs I decided to replace it with a GSA-S10N. It came today, I have replaced the drives. Now my 10.6.3 MBP 4.1 does not recognise the new drive though it is clear from the very start that cable is connected properly and the drive does make a sound at the start-up. While MBP being on I tried to stuck in a DVD to see if it would accept, so it took my DVD tried to spin and threw it back at me. I have done already PRAM and SMC, checked the permissions. Any ideas would be welcomed!

Sorry, mxmbulat, if I sent you on a wild goose chase. I forgot these slimline drives were jumperless even though they are IDE type interfaces.
Was the drive from an Apple specialist supplier? Another slight possibility if not may be that it had firmware configured for a specific different brand of computer, though even then I would have thought you would still be able to 'see" it.
I've seen one report of one of these drives having to be returned because it was apparently not an "Apple compatible" version - see http://www.amazon.com/review/R3LJHIVUESD1MV/ref=cmcr_rdpperm and I can only assume this related to a specific firmware issue rather than a more general problem.
A more likely explanation seems to be that the drive itself was defective.
Hope all goes well with your own replacement.
    Cheers

Install an hardware diagnostic tool like Everest home Edit or similar.
This tool would provide all hardware details about your notebook.
It would list all devices and chipset name too.
I think its Intel chipset so you could find the driver on the Intel page
