CEF vs MLS

Hi.
I try to understand the L3 switching issues on the Catalyst range
switches.
As I already know MLS was the mechanism of the L3 switching on the older sort of Catalysts (5000/6500MSFC1). But the MLS has evolved to the CEF switching.
Do CEF mean L3 switching ? And what's difference between CEF on router and on L3 switch ?
What about to MLS and CEF working the same time on e.g. 6500? Are they mutually exclusive or they work together in some manner? In what manner? Why can I issue "sh mls cef ... " on 6509/sup720 ?
When I issue "sh platform forward ... " on 3750, does it mean HARDWARE CEF((I call it)? How about "sh ip cef " .
It is very confusing. I don't know whether CEF equal to L3 switching or there is HARDWARE CEF and SOFTWARE CEF ?
Could someone explain the issue?
thanks!

Hi henry,
As you now MLS was a traditional type of route caching mechanism that was used on older hardware/software. It was also called as route once switch many forwarding.
CEF cisco epress forwarding is mutually exclusinve of MLS as it has a different way to work. With the advent of CEf, the routing table ( l3 FIB table forwarding information base) and adjaceny table(l2) gets download on the hardware and does the L3 switching. Its is done in hardware so no performance issue.
CEF on router and L3 switch is the same.

  • Differences between MSFC1 and MSFC2 in Catalyst switches

    Hi,
Want to know the differences between MSFC1 and MSFC2 in Catalyst switches.

    Hi,
There is not much difference between MSFC1 and MSFC2, the main difference is how the MSFCs send the hardware programming to the PFC. The MSFC1 uses MLS to program the hardware by using the first packet of the traffic. While the MSFC2 uses CEF-based MLS to program the PFC so that the supervisor can make the hardware switching of the packet. NOtice the difference if the MSFC1 needs to see the first packet while the MSFC2, in theory will not need to see a first packet as it uses the CEF routing table to program the PFC2. Now, the kicker, if MSFC2 in sup1A , all this CEF-based MLS is not used since it needs PFC2 to be able to do this. Sup1A does not come with PFC2 only Sup2 comes with PFC2. The MSFCs gives the Cat6K a L3 ability and it's important but the switching performance of the switch depends on the PFC.
Here is a link on MSFC2 data sheet:

  • 6500 VLAN Interface (SVI) Throughtput

    Guys,
Very quick one, does anyone have any stats on throughputs on a VLAN Interface on a 6500 MSFC2
I just remember the old days where if you had an RSM, and it had a VLAN interface, the throughtput was 400Mbps (or sommat like that)
Can a 6500 MSFC2 SVI run at a full gig?
Sorry if this sounds a little crazy.
    Kindest regards,
    Ken

That makes a lot of sense.
I just did some research, and yes it was 400M on a 5500 and now 1000 for the 6500 with an MSFC 2, so yes, they have not increased it that much becuase As you say, it should all be cef-based MLS or traditional MLS based
    Many thx all,

  • High cpu when change "mls cef maximum-route ip" to more than 512K

    Dear All
From cisco document 6500-sup720 and 7600-rsp720 are support IPv4 unicast and MPLS—512,000 routes by default. On my network we have route more than 400K which nearly reach to the limit then I tried to change from 512K to 1007K as below.
    Router#sh mls cef maximum-routes
    FIB TCAM maximum routes :
    =======================
    Current :-
    IPv4                - 1007k
    MPLS                - 1k
    IPv6 + IP Multicast - 8k (default)
After rebooted I got high cpu issue on both 6500-sup720 and 7600-rsp720 then I tried to tuning to other value such as 600K , 700K and so on but doesn't help.
    Summary
       - I have no cpu issue with default value for mls cef maximum-route
       - I have cpu issue when tuning to other value such as 600K , 700K
    Please advise.

  • Cisco 7606 FIB Protocol Allocation mismatch after mls cef maximum-routes command

    Hi,
we are trying to fine tune the mls cef maximum-routes without success for ipv4 on our Cisco 7606 router equiped like this:

the show version is like this:

We tryied to set the value of the ipv4 FIB TCAM to 720k with this command:
    mls cef maximum-routes ip 720
and then to save the configuration we used the "write" command. This was the output after we wrote the configuration:
    FIB TCAM maximum routes :
    =======================
    Current :-
     IPv4 + MPLS         - 512k (default)
     IPv6 + IP Multicast - 256k (default)
    User configured :-
     IPv4                - 720k
     MPLS                - 16k (default)
     IPv6 + IP Multicast - 144k (default)
    Upon reboot :-
     IPv4                - 720k
     MPLS                - 16k (default)
     IPv6 + IP Multicast - 144k (default)
so we reloaded the router to get the new value.
when the router was up again it start to reload each 4 minutes. The FIB TCAM value was:
    show mls cef maximum-routes
Reload scheduled for 13:50:09 DST Wed Aug 13 2014 (in 2 minutes and 51 seconds)
Reload reason: FIB Protocol Allocation mismatchFIB TCAM maximum routes :
    =======================

     IPv4 + MPLS         - 512k (default)

    User configured :-
     IPv4 + MPLS         - 512k (default)

    Upon reboot :-
     IPv4 + MPLS         - 512k (default)
     IPv6 + IP Multicast - 256k (default)
We know that our cisco is able to handle up to 1M of ipv4 routes inside the TCAM but we cannot set more than 512k ipv4 routes.
Why the router doesn't accept the new value?
    Thanks

    Hi,
QOS implementation has radically changed since the advent of
    sup-7 & later
You no longer set mls qos as qos is on the engine by default.
    Please see the following links
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-4500-series-switches/white_paper_c11-539588.html
    "Ingress QoS: Default Actions
First and foremost, QoS does not need to be enabled on the Supervisor Engine, it is on by default in compliance with the MQC construct.
When a packet arrives at an interface, there are two options to take into consideration: is there a policy attached or not? If the packet arrives with or without a marking and there is not a policy attached to the interface, packets will flow through the switch untouched. There are no questions as to where the packet came from or if it has a valid marking. • MPLS TE load-balancing --- CEF Problem

    Dears
Would like your assistance please regarding below issue
We are having 5 TE tunnels going to same destination and we are doing load-balancing between these 5 LSPs TE tunnels.
Command "mls ip cef load-sharing full simple" is configured so that CEF will use L4 ports in its algorithm
Problem that due to CEF behavior, 2 link are v.highly utilized and the other 3 utilization are below average
What I am thinking of but not sure If this will help or not is to have 2 TE tunnels instead of 5
1 TE tunnel load balancing on 3 links ( This can be done by using static route to tail loopback poiting to the 3 links) and another TE tunnel load balancing on the other 2 links
By doing this, I think CEF would be used 2 times; first to determine which TE tunnel to use then to determine which link within the tunnel
    Will this help ?
    For example
    interface Tunnel1
    ip unnumbered Loopback0
    mpls ip
    tunnel destination 10.0.0.1
    tunnel mode mpls traffic-eng
    tunnel mpls traffic-eng autoroute announce
    tunnel mpls traffic-eng path-option 1 dynamic
    tunnel mpls traffic-eng fast-reroute
    ip route 10.0.0.1 255.255.255.255 link-1
    ip route 10.0.0.1 255.255.255.255 link-2
    ip route 10.0.0.1 255.255.255.255 link-3

    Hello Sherif,
traffic of a single TE tunnel will not be load balanced over multiple physical links as the TE tunnel is setup using a reservation and the path will use only one link for each router hop.
So moving to two TE tunnels is not an option for you.
    Hope to help
    Giuseppe

  • VRF and CEF adj table

    Hello!
I've faced with CEF adj table overflow on SUP720-3BXL when tried to import BGP Full View into VRF on PE.
The scheme is following: border router R1 (6500 SUP720-3BXL) is MPLS PE. BGP session with uplinks are configured in address-family ipv4 vrf Uplink.
I use "Per VRF label" feature for VRF Uplink due to TCAM limitations.
There is another PE router R2 (6500 SUP720-3BXL) in the network with VRF Uplink.
R2 has a problem with CEF adj table overflow because it creates adj entry for each prefix from BGP Full View instead of common entry for all traffic to R01. The content of these adj entries is identical.
Here is some output from R1 and R2:

It seems to me that 6500 need 1 adj entry for 1 FEC and it can't summarize all traffic with defined label to 1 FEC. Am i right?

  • Multi-Layer switching & cef

Does anybody have some usefull links or information regarding CEF/Multi-layer switching? How are these features interacting with each other? Key differences?
    Thank's a lot.
    Florian

    Hi Florian,
Basically in MLS the first packet to reach the destination rill need to be processed by router as it just maintain the caches and so for second packet it gets wr writed in hardware.
But in CEF even the first packet is hardware switches as it builds the adjacency table and FIB table. Which not only maintains the routing entried but also the arp entried like binding the mac with ip so that even first packet can be hardware switches.
Have a look at this white paper for CEF

How to set this MLS option from backend? I tried submitting the request after setting the apps context and set_nls_options...But,concurrent request ends with an error mainly because of the MLS not effective..
    1. What is the procedure to submit the concurrent program from PL/SQL which has MLS attached?

  • Working with an MLS Entity

    Hi,
While I try to insert into an MLS entity created in the Fusion Development Environment I am getting the following error:
(oracle.jbo.RowCreateException) JBO-25017: Error while creating a new entity row for PERJOBSEO.
    ----- Level 1: Detail 0 -----
    (java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException) -2
    Please help.

    Hi Frank,
As per the steps mentioned in the following link :
    http://www-apps.us.oracle.com:1100/fwk/jdev/doc/devguide/bus/bus_java.htm#tl
I have created the required entity objects and view objects.
I have an entity JobsDEO which is based on a view per_jobs_vl which is itself based on 2 tables,per_jobs_f and per_jobs_tl,wherein _tl is the translation table.
The entity for _tl table is JobTranslationEO and has no VO associated with it.Its the JobsVO,based on JobsDEO,that has to handle any interactions with this entity too.
JOBSDEO has a property set up for HCM_DBSEQUENCE,which makes it read the value of job_id from the sequence per_jobs_s.
Now,when I try to insert into the JobsVO,based on JobsDEO,it gives me the above mentioned error.
One more thing is that the error does'nt occur when we commit a row,its just when we click the "+" button in the AM Tester that we get this error.
    Please advice.

I need to set up Firefox on my IPad 2 to be able to use my MLS system. How do I do this?

    1. Mozilla doesn't have a version of Firefox for iOS, which is used on the iPad.
    2. Most MLS services aren't compatible with Firefox, they seem to use software that needs controls that are only available in Internet Explorer.

  • Adobe CEF Helper multiple instances causing problems using newest CC  1.5.1.369

I just reinstalled all CC and Apps after a clean refresh wipe of PC.  Within one week I am having several crashes and lockups and other strange behavior while using Photoshop, Indesign and other apps.
The lockups have been getting progressively worse, starting with very short delays while switching between apps or even switching to desktop to mouse click a file icon there which seemed almost like my machine would get focused on whatever app I was in and would not immediately release when I switched to do other things.  Now the lockups are getting longer.  Photoshop is also not fully closing down.  So later if I reopen it, a photoshop process is still running in Task Manager and I must force it down before I can open a new file in a new instance of photoshop.
Today I had one complete crash of PS, as well as some strange lockup when I had two small ad files open.  We are talking 1/6th page ads - small.  I had them open side by side when it locks up and only thing I can move is the mouse curser which has changed to an "unallowed" icon (circle with slash). Rest of application and tools were locked up.  In one of the files it would let me click a layer in the file and it would jump around the page.   I checked Task manager and multiple CEF helpers were running around 30-50,000K private memory working set, and one of the CEF helpers was fluctuating between 13-20% or so of CPU usage.  I immediately ended that service and photoshop started working again and I was able to save the files.   I'm still noticing other problems like not being able to select multiple items at one time to copy/paste seen both in Indesign and Adobe acrobat pdf files.
I remember hearing about this issue long ago and checked the forums.  Low and behold the long time Adobe CEF Helper problem thread was closed by a staffer in Feb, 2014, stating the following:
    https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1235395?start=120&tstart=0

Locking this discussion as the cause of the excessive usage of Adobe CEF Helper was addressed in version 1.1.2.232.  For full release notes please see Creative Cloud app for desktop | Release Notes -http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/release-note/cc-release-notes.html.
If you are experiencing difficulties with the Adobe CEF Helper please post a new discussion with the specifics of the behavior you are encountering.
I am having problems with the CEF helper and I have CC 1.5.1.369 as far as I can tell, on a fresh install a week old.
    System:
Windows prof 7 sp1 64bit, 32gb ram, SSD main drive and mechanical data drive
Items added to this PC are autodesk products and Adobe CC Apps.   I don't have a number of addons for CC apps like photoshop, just one plugin for photoshop called Geographic Imager.
Hopefully there is something more subtle I can try besides wiping my PC and reinstalling all the apps and settings again.  A pc refresh and install this time with up to date CC and Apps was meant to fix all my broken file associations issues from previous updates - which it did.  But was hoping not to end up with a dreaded CEF helper issue.  Any help would be appreciated as this seems to be getting worse daily.
Other note, I turned off Syncing of settings when I first started noticing issues.  Haven't tried much else besides ending CEF helper services when forced to.

I just want to note that my recommendations led my clients to purchase more than 5 licences of FMIS/AMIS througt the time.
As I see how low is the passion to react to any problem on Adobe side, I would have probably changed my mind.
This is really pain in the *** as any call to adobe official contact (taken on mind that to find one is a big quest by itself) lead just to reply "pay nasty amount for our consultancy Sir!" and it does not look any better here....
I am no novice on FMS/AMS platform, working with it more than 6 years throught many projects and I would not ask for some stupid questions which could be solved just by looking to documentation or could be solved by some performance eperience.
I am really upset for this :/

  • Multiple Adobe CEF Helper, Conhost, icalcs.exe in Windows 8.1 Autostart

While checking some autostart apps, that I could possibly deactivate, I found something strange.
There are multiple entries for "Adobe CEF helper", "Conhost" and "icacls.exe". All grouped under the Adobe Creative Cloud.
On my other machine, Conhost and icalcs.exe don't appear at all and Adobe CEF helper only once.
They do not noticeably create any errors, however, it's not feeling right. I don't know exactly when these entries appeared for first time. The device is pretty new and I just installed a bunch of work related software like Office 365, Adobe CC, Chrome, ...
When installing Filezilla, some bloatware/adware was automatically installed on the system (blame sourceforge, see download comments over there). Currently I'm testing Kaspersky Internet Security, 30 days trial. But I don't think none of them is to blame.
I would personally like to avoid reinstalling Adobe CC, because it lasts forever.
Q: What might have caused these entries? Should I correct it? And how should I correct it?
System: Windows 8.1 64bit on an fairly new ASUS GL550JK.
    Thanks.

Update: I reinstalled the whole system and it still shows up.
Directly after the installation of Adobe CC, only Adobe CC showed up in the Autostart menu. Even after a restart still nothing (and the entry still had "boot time - no measured"). After the boot time was measured, same subentries as above appeared.
