Cellular usage measurement

I have an iPhone 4S running iOS 7.1.2 and using an AT&T plan that allows me 200MB of cellular data per month, which has been more than enough for my needs every month for several years now. Last Thursday I received two text messages from AT&T letting me know that I had used 137GB and, a couple of hours later, 189 MB of my monthly data allowance. This morning I received another message saying I'd gone over the 200 MB by about 1 MB, and I'd be billed $15 for another 200 MB. That would be OK with me if it weren't for the fact that my phone says (in Settings > Cellular > Current Period) I've only used a total of 186 MB since my last reset, which was an hour before my current monthly billing cycle began at 12:01AM on June 11.
AT&T Customer Support's story is that the Settings app's monitoring of my cellular data usage doesn't include all the apps or functions that actually use cellular data, but AT&T's monitoring does, and therefore it provides the only accurate record of my usage. I can certainly see why AT&T likes this explanation, but I'm suspicious of it. Why would Apple build cellular data usage recording into Settings if it wasn't going to be accurate enough to be useful? Is AT&T telling me the truth?
Are there apps or processes that use cellular data when no apps are open, or when the phone is asleep?
I really like being able to see in Settings how much cellular data I've used for each of my cellular-enabled apps (as well as for System Services), but AT&T's alternative usage reporting methods (either by dialing *3282# or by checking in the "My AT&T" app) only give me the grand total since the start of the current billing period, with no breakdown or detail at all. If Apple's reporting really isn't complete and accurate, I hope Apple will correct the defect ASAP.

Absolutely! Any app that uses data while the phone is asleep will use cellular data, because the phone turns off WiFi when it is asleep to save the battery unless it is plugged in.
There is also never a time when there are no apps open. Closing an app from the Quick Launch screen does not kill the app's background process if it is a built in app. And if it is a 3rd party app the first Notification that the app receives will relaunch the app's background process.
Some functions always use cellular data, even if the phone is connected to WiFi, or asleep, or both. Visual Voicemail is one. Find my iPhone is another.
You can turn off background processing for apps in Settings; this is probably a good place to visit. And also see: http://www.overthought.org/blog/2014/the-ultimate-guide-to-solving-ios-battery-d rain. While it talks about battery usage, that's indirectly connected to cellular data usage.
I suggest a 1 GB data plan. It isn't that much more than 200 MB. And it is less if you go over 200 MB.

  • IOS 8.0.2 Excessive Cellular Usage

For 10 years my average cellular data usage per month has been around 250-350MB. Since updating to IOS 8, my cellular usage has gone up to between 1GB and 1.5GB. My daily usage is now in excess of 50MB for which I cannot explain since I disabled almost ALL services from using cellular. With the exception of find my phone and email I do not use iCloud. The applications I use have not changed in the past 3 months. I have checked the cellular data usage page on my phone and although the total amount of cellular data goes up, the amount listed by service only adds up to approximately 10% of the total. I have noted that even over night while on Wifi my cellular usage goes up.
I have done a full device reset with a restore from backup with no effect.
From what I can see from using Techet's "Network Analyzer" and "Status" , apple is maintaining at least two cellular connections to siri.apple.com. With the exception of Siri I don't see any other cellular connections being maintained although I noted that a reboot uses up to 7 MB of cellular data.
With the exception of turning off siri for 24 hours I'm at a loss as to what else to do to isolate my excessive cellular usage. I should also point out that at this point my guess is that this excessive cellular usage is whats draining my battery as well. Prior to IOS 8 I got two full days on a charge, now I get about 10 hours.
I will update this article once I have tested the siri theory.

I have been having the same problem. I average about 100MB of use a day. After switching to iPhone 6/iOS 8, my data usage shot up to 400MB per day.
From the iPhone's data usage tracking function, I realised that the excess data was being consumed by "System Services --> Documents & Sync", and not by any app. Chunks of around 300 MB were being used every day.
Similar to you, my data also goes up even while at home, asleep, and connected to wifi.
I have turned off every option that allows me to block or reduce usage of cellular data, including auto-updates, iTunes Match, background refresh, location services, etc.
I've turned off syncing wherever available, as I back up via iTunes anyway.
My Siri is switched off as well. But the problem still persists.
I've called Apple and they don't have a solution for this. They can only suggest restoring from a backup to see if it works. If it doesn't, they suggest restoring as a new phone.
Apple also refuses to intervene or assist in any way with the excessive data charges, even though I have pointed out repeatedly that the problems only began when I upgraded to iPhone 6/iOS 8.
In the meantime, my data usage is going through the roof and my service provider refuses to waive any of the charges. It is extremely frustrating and I really am at a complete loss as to what to do.

  • Cellular Usage - iphone and ipad

hello i have an iPhone 4S and iPad Mini 2 (wifi version only), i only bought the iPad on Dec 2013 and i always try to search for public free wifi before attempting to use my iPhone as Personal Hotspot. The reason is that my cellular plan is only limited to 1GB per month cellular data and extra charge will be added if over the limit. They send me SMS about my cellular usage every week and my habit with my mobile and ipad is always less than 200MB per month. I don't play games and i don't download games, i don't update the iOS or download large apps , of course i never watch YouTube with the iPhone or iPad. Everything was perfectly normal but by the end of January i was notified that i had used over 3GB cellular usage on a particular week (third week of January), and of course then I am heavily charged. I have called their CS for several times about where the data was used but they refused to answer and said that it might be your Personal Hotspot being stolen by the others (while my Personal Hotspot always requires password and my password was not "abcdefg" or "1234567", the password was very randomly designed by me, mixed with numbers and English letters... It's not possible to guess out the password.
Note. I don't use iCloud and never used it. No Facebook
    Ok, now my question is
could anyone help guessing why's that happening? is it that easy to hack into the wifi and consume my cellular usage when my password is not stupid 1234567 or abcdefg or any birthday dates something.
i now really don't know what's the bad i had done to let 3GB cellular usage be consumed in a week. I turn off Personal Hotspot when i don't use iPad.
    Thanks

When your iPad is allowed to access your iPhone cellular data connection over a WIFI personal hotspot there is much less control over which iPad apps are actualy allowed to use the 3G cellular.
When i look at the WIFI traffic from an iPad (WireShark), there is all sorts of communication active on the background  Such as the iCloud storage service backing up pictures / mail when WIFI is active or push notofications.
On my iPad mini there is very data little on it, a bit of mail and a few pictiures. Nonetheless it managed to occupy a whopping 2.4Gb on the 5Gb iCloud storage capacity. When all this data moving happened, i can't tell exactly since there is no backup activity notification on a WIFI connection. What i do know iCloud backup not active when my iPad Mini cellular has a direct cellular connection. (not over a WIFI hotspot)
    Just my 2 cents

How is your iPhone's display different?
    You can check the model number by  going to Settings/General/About. These are the model numbers for the various 3 GS models;
    MB715LL/A (16 GB Black), MB716LL/A (16 GB White), MB717LL/A (32 GB Black), MB718LL/A (32 GB White), MC555LL/A (8GB)

  • IPhone 6 plus shows cellular usage out of box

I got my iPhone 6 Plus delivered and it shows 12 hours 20 Minutes of cellular usage out of the box. I checked with an Apple representative and they say it might be tested and hence the hours. Any ideas? Should I return and get another one?

If you put the camera right next to your ear when you have the camera working can you hear the OIS motors buzzing away as if they are constantly moving? How about the front camera? Is that working correctly?m There seems to be a few threads on here saying that the OIS for the 6 plus is a bit iffy, my best advice is to book in to your nearest Apple Store to have it looked at, If they can spot the problem they will either replace the whole handset or the camera (which takes an hour)

Apple IDs do not go out of existence.  All purchases are PERMANENTLY associated with whatever ID was used for the purchase.  Go here to investigate.

  • Cellular usage by App

Somehow my Cellular usage went from 1.0GB to 1.6GB today and Ive just been driving around all day without even using my iPad.   So some app must be causing  the issue..  I suspect that is may be my work Good app that checks emails, but I don't know for sure...
Any recommendations on how to show Cellular usage by app?
Since LTE is 10x faster, we should get 10x more data...    20GB instead of 2GB... 2GB is just stupid.

All of your apps will use data but just a small amount per minute or two. It varies per application's purpose. From just checking your mail hourly to running a multiplayer game to online date chatting to GPS navigation, each pool a great deal of KBs per few minutes.
There is no application that says this application uses 10 KB a minute or 100 KB a minute. You just have to control which apps you visit. Pretty much you need to avoid just about every application on the iPhone.

  • Lifetime cellular usage removed by iOS 8

    Another iOS 8 hiccup
Lifetime cellular usage has been erased and now shows  the same as the monthly usage. Was over 38 hours for 10 months usage and now is just 44 minutes like the monthly total.
Why was this changed? A new OS shouldn't change statistics.

I had exactly the same issue when upgrading to iOS8. I have iPhone 5s and lifetime usage was erased. Apple's OS (both iOS and OS X) has really appeared buggy in the last few years and it's starting to look like Microsoft. Please get your acts together Apple before you start to loose some long time loyal customers!

  • With ios7 how do you get cumulative cellular usage

When I updated I lost the ability to track my cumulative data usage on cellular.  How do I get it back?

  • HT5654 What is the "other" section in my cellular usage and how do I get rid of it? It is taking almost 75% of my usage space.

It is taking almost 75% of my usage space and I have no idea what it entails and how to get rid of it. I deleted almost all of my pictures and apps, emails, and emptied my safari cache and browsing history.

"Other" is typically less than a GB.
More generally indicates a corrupt file(s).
    A restore should resolve.

  • I purchased new iPhone 5 but phone shows cellular usage for lifetime calls 5 days 11 hours. How can this be?

I purchased a new iPhone 5 and it shows 5 days 11 hours of cellular lifetime call time. I suspect someone had used this phone prior to selling it. Can someone tell me if I am correct. Shouldn't it show only the time that I have logged in calls since purchasing it?

I synced it with my iTunes account if that is how you restore from a backup. But my old phone shows 7 days and 2 hours call time and my new phone shows 5 days 11 hours.

  • How to unlock cellular usage - ipad

Hello, can anyone tell me how to unlock a japanese ipad 3 (4G) locked by Softbank ?
Now i live in italy. thank you for help !

If it's locked to Softbank, only Softbank can unlock it, so you will have to contact them and inquire.

  • What causes cellular data usage to decrease if last reset has not changed? I reset every pay period cuz I do not have unlimited and was showing 125 mb sent/1.2g received. Now showing 98mb sent/980mb received. Last reset still shows same

I reset my cellular data usage every month at the beginning of my billing period so that I can keep track of how much data I am using thru out the month. I do not have the unlimited data plan and have gone over a few times. It's usually the last couple days of my billing cycle and I am charged $10 for an extra gig which I barely use 10% of before my usage is restarted for new billing cycle. FYI, they do not carry the remainder of the unused gig that you purchase for $10 which I disagree with. But have accepted. Lol  Moving on.
I have two questions. One possibly being answered by the other. 1. Is cellular data used when I sync to iTunes on my home computer to load songs onto my iPhone from my iTunes library(songs that already exist)? 2. What causes the cellular data usage readings in iPhone settings/general/usage/cellular usage to decrease if my last reset has not changed? It is close to end of my billing cycle and I have been keeping close eye. Earlier today it read around 180mb sent/1.2gb received. Now it reads 90mb sent/980 mb recieved. My last reset date reads the same as before. I don't know if my sync and music management had anything to do with the decrease but i didn't notice the decrease until after I had connected to iTunes and loaded music. I should also mention that a 700mb app automatically loaded itself to my phone during the sync process. Is cellular data used at all during any kind of sync /iPhone/iTunes management? Is the cellular data usage reading under iPhone settings a reliable source to keep track of monthly data usage? Guess turned out to be more than two questions but all related. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer me. It is information I find valuable. Sorry for the book long question.

Is cellular data used at all during any kind of sync /iPhone/iTunes management? Is the cellular data usage reading under iPhone settings a reliable source to keep track of monthly data usage?
    1) No.
    2) It does provide an estimated usage, but it's not accurate. For accurate determination, you should check the remaining/used MBs from the carrier (most of the carriers provide this service for free).

  • Why do I have mysterious cellular data usage (Verizon) every 6 hours on all 3 of my iphone 5's?

I have recently uncovered mysterious cellular usage on three different iPhones. I am a Verizon customer and discovered this by examining the cellular data use logs. What I found are a long series of mysterious data usage logs. I have visited the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store 3 times now to log notes and discuss the issue. It is being escalated.
    The characterstics are as follows:
All my family phones have the appropriate IOS and hardware updates (verified by the GeniusBar at my local Apple Store).
This is occuring across three phones, which happen to all be iphone 5. Two are 5 and the other a new 5s. We do have one iphone 4 in the family but the issue (so far as I can tell), is not happening on it.
One iphone 5 has IOS 7, the other IOS 6. The new 5s has of course IOS 7.
Mysterious data use happens even while connected to wifi.
Each mysterious data use log entry is exactly 6 hours apart. For example: 2:18 AM, 8:18 AM, 2:18 PM, 8:18 PM, 2:18 AM ... etc. It cycles AM and PM, same times, for a day to many days until some condition causes it to change (evolve).
The times evolve. One day it could be cycling through at one time series, then it changes to another time sequence and continues until the next condition.
The data usage is anywhere from a few K to many MB. The largest I've seen is over 100 MB.
The logs clearly show these usages are not due to human interaction. It is a program.
If cellular connection is used frequently (by the owner), the pattern is hard to pick out. Luckily, my family member is very good about only using wifi whenever possible, so these mysterious use patterns are easy to pick out.
Verizon allows access to 90 days worth of data logs, so I downloaded and analyzed them. This has been happening for at least 90 days. I have found 298 instances of mysterious use out of 500 total connections to cellular. A total of 3.5 GB of mysterious cellular data has been recorded as used in that 90 days by this phone alone. Only .6 GB of the total cellular data use is legitimate, meaning by the person.
This issue is occuring across three different phones. Two are iPhone 5, and the third is a recently purchased iPhone 5s. The 5s I have not touched beyone the basic startup. I have left it alone on a desk for 3 days, and looking at the logs, the mysterious data use in the same pattern is occuring.
So ... I am speaking to both sides, Verizon and Apple to get answers. Verizon puts their wall up at data usage. It doesn't matter how it is being used, you simply need to pay for it. Yes, the evidence I have gathered is getting closer to someting on Verizon's end.
Before pressing in that direction, I am hoping someone reading this may recognize this issue as a possible iPhone 5 issue ... OR ... you, right now, go look at your data usage logs available through your carrier's web account, and see if you can pick out a pattern of mysterious use. Look especially at the early morning instances when you are most likely sleeping.
I am hoping this is a simple issue that has a quick resolution. I'm looking for the "ooohhh, I see that now ..." But I am starting to think this might be much bigger, but the fact is, most customers rarely or never look at their data usage details, much less discover mysterious use patterns.
The final interesting (maybe frightening part) thing about all this is that I discovered while talking to Verizon ... they do not divulge which direction the data is going. This goes for any use, mysterious or legitimate. Is cellular data coming to your phone, or leaving it? Is something pulling data from your phone? We know that it is possible to build malware apps, but the catch with my issue is that it is also happening on a brand new iphone 5s with nothing downloaded to it.
    Thanks for your time

Thanks for the replies. It took a while not hearing anything so thought I was alone. I have done many of the suggestions already. The key here is that it occurs on both phones with apps, and phones still packaged in a box.
A Genius Bar supervisor also checked his Verizon data usage log and found the same 6 hour incremental use. Suprisingly, he did not express much intrigue over that. Maybe he did, but did not show it.
I think the 6 hour incremental usage is the main issue here. I spoke with Verizon (again) and they confirmed that all they do is log exactly when the phone connected to the tower and used data. The time it records is when the usage started. I also found out that the time recorded is GMT.
What is using data, unsolicited, every 6 hours?
    Why does it change?
Why does it only happen on the iPhone 5 series and not the 4?
Since no one from Apple seems to be chiming in on this, and I have not received the promised calls from Apple tech support that the Genius Bar staff said I was suppose to receive, it is starting to feel like something is being swept under the rug.
I woke up the other day with another thought ... What application would use such large amounts of data? Well ... music, video, sound and pictures of course. Well ... what would someone set automatically that is of any use to them? hmmm ... video, pictures, sound. Is the iPhone 5 succeptible to snooping? Can an app be buried in the IOS that automatically turns on video and sound recording, and send it somewhere ... every 6 hours? Chilling. I noted that the smallest data usage is during the night when nothing is going on, then it peaks during the day. The Genius Bar tech and I looked at each other when I drew this sine wave graph on the log print outs during an appointment ...

  • Measurement of SAP usage / adoption

    Hi,
Would anybody out there have any material (documents, whitepapers etc. ) pertinent to the measurement of SAP usage / measurement of SAP adoption by users? For eg. if a company has been using SAP for a couple of years now, is there any literature on how a consultant might go about looking at the usage of SAP by end users, measuring the same and reporting on it?
I don't know if this is the right section in the forum to be posting this query but I would be most grateful for any kind of inputs.
    Regards,

You can check the Early Watch reports for information about it.
