CentOS 5.7 hosting VMWare Server 2.0.2

Hi,
I´m running a VM-Ware Server 2.0.2 on an CentOS 5.6 with no problem (ok, there was a patch with the glibc, otherwise the virtual guests crashed, but that was working fine after the work around). Now, after an update on CentOS 5.7 the vmware-hostd won´t start up, so I´m not able to connect to the server to start any virtual guest. When I try to start the hostd at the commant shell this is what happends:
#/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-hostd -a -d -u /etc/vmware/hostd/config.xml
/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-hostd: error while loading shared libraries: libvmomi.so.1.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
the lib is present:
]# locate libvmomi.so.1.0
/usr/lib/vmware/vmacore/libvmomi.so.1.0
Any suggestions are welcome
Kind Regards
fatcharly

please create a directory on same name and path ,may solve the problem or if exist check the folder secuirty should not be readonly
please award points if you see fit. Thanks

• SP1 for Windows Server 2008 R2 - Host ok for VmWare Server 2??

Hello,
I am running a VmWare Server 2.02 on a Windows Server 2008 R2 - Host. Are there any known problems with regard to VmWare Server 2 when installing SP1 on the Windwos Server 2008 R2 - Host? I was reluctand to install SP1, because I was unable to find information to that question. Has anybody out there with the same configuration done the SP1-Update already?
Regards,Martin Kluge

Thanks.. That's what I wanted to hear..
any updates since you posted this thread? still working?
It amazes me that they killed off Server, they could have moved it to paid and we would have been happy.
ESXi is great if your hardware supports it, ours doesn't.
We upgraded our linux OS when we did some disk upgrades on our secondary server a few weeks ago only to find server can't run on 2.6.41.. so -- its going to windows r2 2008.

• PLUG IN Problem Vmware server on CentOS

Hello everybody,
I need your help . I installed VMware Server 2 on CentOS.
But when I try to see the console of the virtual machine, It says me that "the VMware Remote Console Plug-in is not installed"
I'm currently using Firefox 10.0.4 and then I can't install this plug-in because it seems to be not compatible with this version of Firefox so I really don't know what to do because I'm not an expert about Linux.
If you have any idea please let me know
Have a nice day

It's sounds like you're monitoring the dry guitar direct from your interface. Make sure direct monitoring is turned off, and turn software monitoring ON in Logic.
Now you should hear the effected guitar on your recording channel, even though just the clean signal is recorded.

• Start Guest OS Automatically through VMware Server 2 Web Console

Hi All,
Does anyone know how to get the guest OS to automatically start/stop when VMware starts/stops? The user's manual says to click on Edit Virtual Machine Startup/Shutdown Settings, but that link is not there for me under the Commands tab. I also upgraded this from Hardware v4 to v7. I'm not sure if that makes a difference. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated, because when my VMware server restarts, I cannot get it to automatically start the virtual machines.
Reference from the User's Manual:
Enabling System-Wide Startup and Shutdown Settings
You can enable virtual machines to be started and shut down automatically and configure how and when virtual machines are started and shut down.
To enable system-wide startup and shutdown settings
1 Select the host in the Inventory panel.
2 In the Commands section of the host Summary tab, click Edit Virtual Machine Startup/Shutdown Settings.
This is within the VMware Server 2 user's guide under Managing Your VMware Server -> Configuring Virtual Machine Startup and Shutdown Settings

Hi Paul,
I see now what you mean. You have to select the host for the entire system, not the guest OS. That's what confused me.
Didn't previous versions have a link on there to define how the startup of the specific guest OS functioned?

It's likely that instead of trying to plot 5 charts with 150000 data-points, you're trying to plot 150000charts with 5 data-points! Try right-clicking on the chart - do you see "Transpose Array" property? If it's checked, UNcheck it (if UNchecked, check it!)

• Automatically Shutdown Database During VMware Server 'Shut Down Guest'

I have 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.4.0 running on Windows Server 2003 R2 under VMware Server version 2.0.0.
I 'Power On' the VM and the OS/database start normally. I don't even open the guest OS console from VMware. I use TOAD and SQLPlus from the host machine to access my database.
I'm trying to set up the database to do a clean shutdown when I use the VMware console to 'Shut Down Guest'.
I've used the Group Policy Object Editor (gpedit.msc) to create a shutdown script under 'Local Computer Policy/Computer Configuration/Windows Settings/Scripts (Startup/Shutdown)/Shutdown'.
The shutdown script is called Shutdown.bat and contains:
rem adding the first two lines didn't affect anything, so I REMed them
rem set ORACLE_SID=mysid
rem set ORACLE_HOME=c:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1
C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\bin\oradim -shutdown -sid mysid -shutmode immediate -log C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\database\oradim.log
exit
I get this in the oradim.log:

C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\bin\oradim -shutdown -sid mysid -shutmode immediate -log C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\database\oradim.log

Note: If I open the guest OS console and execute the Shutdown.bat file as myself (I'm in the administrator and ora_dba groups), it works perfectly ... as does opening SQLPlus and issuing 'shutdown immediate'.
I'm stuck. Any ideas?
Thanks.

We are also having the same issue. We create a shutdown script via the Group Policy editor which works fine if we do a manual shutdown, but if we do a remote shutdown ex: "shutdown /r /f /m <servername /t 120", it does not work, the Database crash.
As mentionned the script works when we do a manual shutdown but does not work for a remote shutdown. The group policy script contains the following:
echo Rebooting server START at %DATE% %TIME% >> E:\oracle\product\admin\test\Reboot.log
net stop <Oracle servicename>
echo Rebooting server MIDDLE at %DATE% %TIME% >> E:\oracle\product\admin\test\Reboot.log
net stop <Oracle servicename>
echo Rebooting server END at %DATE% %TIME% >> E:\oracle\product\admin\test\Reboot.log
After the reboot we see all the echoed line in the "reboot.log" file but the "net stop" doesn't get executed or failed since the database crash and recovers
Any ideas/feedback ?
Thanks

• Running vmware server on laptop issues

Hey Forum.
I'm using my laptop also as Vmware server for beeing able to have a windows machine.
But I have both and wired connection and wireless.
I can get a bridged connection on the wired LAN. But would also wan on the wireless network.
But I cannot get it to work.
I got iwl3945 up and running with great problems. But cannot get it to run.
I've set the wmnet0 bridged to eth0
wnet1 --> Host-only
vmnet3 bridged to wlan0
vmnet8 NAT
But how I do I cannot get the IP from the wireless, no matter what! So how can I fix this ?
Running Kernel 2.6.24.2TP on a IBM X60s.
Is there anything special I need to do to get it rigth - or can someone just explain it to me.
Thanks.

might be off topic but for problems with vmware I moved to virtualbox (from repo) and I forgot about problems
but running vmware I used host only networking - this seems to be easier than bridged

so iam a beginner and can not figure out where the problem is.
i looked around the internet and on the arch wiki but didnt find a sollution - there are often problems with module compilation with newer kernels, therefore there a patches, but not for my kernel.
some people say, that VMWare Server 2 modules compiling fine with the 2.6.30 kernel.. maybe i have another problem.
is this path correct for kernel headers?
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
kernel? [/lib/modules/2.6.30-ARCH/build/include]
I hope someone can help me.

cool, i found a patch and installation works fine now !

and
vmware-server.2.0.1_x64-modules-2.6.30-fix.patch
what i did:
wget both files to /tmp
#cd /tmp
#vi vmware-server.2.0.1_x64-modules-2.6.30-fix.sh
and change the VMMODDIR variable to my fits (cause i installed vmware server somewhere else)

I have faced a similar problem, but I was testing a lot of things simultaneously (not very smart obviously), of which was adding SCSI and IDE disks.
Anyway:
I am running VMware server 1.0.4 on Windows XP.
I have a Solaris 10 8/07 virtual machine installed.
The VM is NATing through the host os's network.
I have two network adapters (physically on my laptop), one wireless and one wired, I can have any combination of them being enabled or disabled according to where I am working, and sometimes I start the virtual machine with neither of them enabled.
When I installed the Solaris VM, the network interface was configured as pcn0. At some point (don't know exactly what i was testing then) pcn0 was no longer available and pcn1 suddenly appeared. Later on this happened again and pnc1 disappeared and I got pcn2.
As far as I can tell this happens when I start the VM with a different combination of NIC's enabled / disable , i.e. for some reason, having a different physical interface enabled causes Solaris in the VM to configure a different instance of the pcn interface.
I am not sure yet if this is really what is going on, but for now I am focusing on testing what is running on the vm rather than giving in to my technical cravings to get to the roots of this problem, so for a quick fix, just grep for pcn in /etc/path_to_inst, and try plumbing the instances you find there. The one that does not return an error is the one that is currently working.
Just change your hostname.pcnx or pcnx.dhcp file to reflect the correct instance number and do an "svcadm clear physical" this will get your network started and start all the dependent services.
Hope this helps.

• Vmware Server web UI stops working.

I have installed Vmware Server from AUR. It seems like it works fine for a short time. I can access the web interface after the initial configuration is done. But the problem is that is suddenly stops responding after a while. I still have not got to the point where I have installed a virtual OS. I have just created the virtual machine itself.
A couple of times is has worked with restarting the Vmware daemon. But most of the time I just get an "Unable to connect" message when I try to connect to it trough Firefox. Opera gives the same result. But telnet seems to get contact.
I'm trying to get this to work in

Does anyone have an idea on what might be the problem?

I managed to install Windows 7 in Vmware Server yesterday. And it worked fine, except that my whole system became very unresponive together with the Windows 7 installation. But it did work. I rebooted my computer today and started up the vmware deamon, and no luck in connecting to the server. I only get an 'Unable to connect' error in Firefox. To fix this, I will have to remove /etc/vmware and install vmware-server over again.
So at the moment, Virtualbox is winning hands down. It don't slow down my hole system, and Windows feels as fast as it was running not in a VM. And it works. The only issue is very slow IO.
Vmware Workstation 6 was alot faster than the Server version. Maybe I shuld try it instead. Just have to find a PGKBUILD for it.

• Standard Upgrade Path from VMWare Server?

I've been using VMWare Server for years to test my software. Specifically I have 2 "beige box" PCs running CentOS running VMWare Server running various versions of Windows Server as domain controllers and file servers as well as numerous workstations. I have a complete mini multi-domain Windows network. When I run the tests for my software it really pushes the 2-3 vms involved with a lot of network communication and some disk activity.
With care and some brute force this has worked well. At least I don't need a stack of PCs. And it's free so it's hard to complain. But unfortunately it's not terribly reliable. The web interface stops working - sometimes only after a day. Clocks drift causing authentication issues. Generally bad things happen if I try to run more than 2 images on the same server. I've gotten to be pretty good at combating these problems but I'm hoping to find something a little more reliable.
So now I'm willing to actually pay for something (gah!) and I would like to upgrade. But VMWare has so many products I just have no idea what I should be looking for.
What is the standard upgrade path from VMWare Server?
Mike

Ok. Two people say use ESXi so I guess I'll just try to burn an ESXi DVD and see what it's like. But ...
Is performance really good enough to compile large projects and do backups over and so on?
VMware Server has worked well enough for me over the years but performance was not like real hardware. But the real problem was reliability. If I ran more than 2 VMs at a time, eventually they would just get their tentacles in a tangle and I would have to kill them and delete lock files and bah! I'm going to assume by your endorsement that ESXi doesn't have any of these problems.
Also, the machine I'm using is a lowly DELL i660 i3-3240 with 8GB of memory. I paid $429 USD for it at a local consumer electronics store! This is no server. Will it even work?

• VMware Server

Hello,
I've recently purchased a dedicated server with Arch Linux installed... I've compiled vmware-server and vmware-server-modules from AUR, made a bridge network via eth0... Question is, how do I configure the guest OSes (also Arch Linux)?
If I supply one of the three IPs I've been assigned (only one is assigned to eth0 currently, the other two have no virtual interfaces) and set the gateway and DNS IPs to the eth0 IP address, I can't ping any domains nor get external access.
What do I need to do to configure the Arch Linux guests to work?

I can ping the host from the guest, and vice versa

• Licensing number invalid - VMWare Server 2.0.2 on Windows XP

Hi,
I installed the vmware 2.0.2 server and created a vm and got the no-license message. Then tried to enter the license for windows from the download page and vmware server said that the license number is invalid. Searched the forum and deinlstalled the vmware server and reinstalled it. During install it did not ask for a key. After installation tried to enter the key and it did not accet it. Please help.
Best regards

Here seem to be 2 solutions.
1. Uninstall the software together with serial key (the uninstall must ask about it). Then reinstall.
2. Find the registry key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\VMware, Inc.\VMware Server
for 64 bit or
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VMware, Inc.\VMware Server
for 32-bit. Delete the value License.vs.1.0-00 .
Then add to the key Dormant\License.gsx.3.0-00 the following values:
"Serial"="<new_serial>"
"Name"="<Name>"
"CompanyName"="<Company_name>"
"LastModified"="2008-12-01 @ 16:00:00 UTC"
and restart VMWare Host Agent service.
