Central Address Book

I work in a small office (10 Employees) and we recently implemented an Xserve and switched all of our PC's to Macs (mix of MacBook Pro and 27"iMac). We would like to share one central address book but when we set up on user on the server (central) with all 2,500 contacts in it and then we install that user into our local machines address books it slows to a crawl and takes a very long time to search for a specific entry. Does anyone know a better way to share one address book amongst multiple machines on a network or is there a cheap software that we can use?

Hi,
Based on my research, the ABP is to provide a simpler mechanism to accomplish GAL segmentation for org that require multiple GALs.
If you want to add external contacts, it seems impossible.
Found an article related to ABP for your reference:

  • Manage central address books

    hi,
we are a small office with 5 users and bought leopard server. maybe somebody can help us with the following task:
we want to have a central repository of address, which anyone who subscribes to can use. i.e. add, edit, remove contacts and when not in the office view offline.
at the same time, each one will have its own local contacts in her local address book.
what do i need to do on the server and client side?
    thanx for the help
    philip

The Leopard Server administrator can set up user accounts and enter basic contact information. Read Chapter 5 - "Managing Users" - in the Leopard Server Getting Started Guide available here: http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/GettingStartedv10.5.pdf The server administrator also has the capability of creating and editing shared contact information using the Directory application running locally on the server.
If your client workstations are running OS X Tiger (10.4.x), then users can access the shared contact info by adding the server as an LDAP directory to Address Book using "Preferences > LDAP". Once you've done this, after a user types the first two characters of a person's name in Address Book or Mail, the system will show all possible matches on the server. So, for example, if they type "Da", they'll see all the Dave's, Dan's, Dalton's, etc., listed on the server. Using this technique, there isn't a way to view the entire directory, however, the way you normally do in Address Book.
If you have Windows-based workstations, they can access the LDAP directory in a similar manner using Outlook or whatever mail program you happen to be using.
If you want to go one step further and allow your users to view the entire directory or create or edit their own shared directory entries, then they'll also need to be running Leopard (also referred to as "Leopard Client") in order to be able to run the "Directory" application. Before you upgrade your workstations to Leopard, I strongly advise that you first make full backups of your users systems, either as .sparseimages made to a Firewire drive or to the server. I recommend using Carbon Copy Cloner v2.5 or v3.0 (available at http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html). If you use this tool correctly, you'll have a recoverable image to fall back to in case there are any Leopard installation glitches.
Once you've installed Leopard on a workstation, you can connect the workstation to the server either at installation time, via an invitation e-mail, or using the Directory Utility. The Leopard Server Getting Started Guide describes the process in Chapter 6 - "Managing Users' Computers". Once you've done this, your users' account type will change to "Managed" in their System Preferences > Accounts pane. What this will enable them to do is run the Directory application in Leopard, which will allow them to view / add / edit shared contact information the way that I suspect you want.
Before you do all of this, you should read up a bit, I would think; the full suite of Leopard Server documentation is available here: http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/resources/
    Hope this helps.

  • Lion Server: How do I import into the central address book?

    Hello
I could successfully import addresses into the local address book of my Mac Mini (using the import function of the address book application).
However, I want the addresses to be in the central, shared address book of the Lion Server. I can't find a way to import there.
    Does anyone have an idea?
    Thanks! Martin

Never mind, I figured it out: Open the local addresses, select all, drag/drop to the desktop. Then open the server address book and drag/drop from the desktop.

  • How can I stop a shared address book from duplicating groups?

    Hi,
in our company we want to have one central address book, because we basically all contact the same people.
What I did was create an account on my Mac Mini Server and added that users address book to everyones addressbook app.
The problem I have now is that regularily all groups we have are duplicated, simply by opening the addressbook on a second machine.
Is there a better way of sharing an address book?
How do I stop the duplication of addresses?
    (All machines are Mountain Lion!)
    Thank you for any tips!
    All the best

  • Address book Sync with Lion Server

    Hello,
I have set up a Mac Mini with Lion Server and have OD users (no local user on the server). When I login "locally" (using the OD user account), I have my full environment, everything seems to work ok. Also the sync from my iPhone seems to work (only some calendar errors, sync doesn't come up with address book errors). But, as I now have noted, there is not really a sync of the address book. I have an old version of my address book on the server.
How do I properly set up that:
    - my iPhone syncs with my OD user's address book only
    whereas
    -  central address book is kept on the OD server as well (without any sync)?
Or did I get something wrong regarding the concept of running an address book on the Lion server ... maybe it's not possible to sync the iPhone to an OD user's address book?
    Best regards,
    Olaf.

Have you tried rebuilding the accounts in SystemPrefs>Mail, Contacts and Calendars?
Are the machines bound to the directory?
Try setting it up in a fresh account on the broken Mac.
Try setting it up on a different Mac.
    Hope this helps,
    Brian

  • Address book and Mail's address book different??

I thought all Snow Leopard applications shared the same central address book but when I change, say an email address in the main "Address Book" and later address an email, the old email still comes up. When I open address book from within Mail, the entry is different than the one in the main "Address Book" from the dock.
Am I somehow running two different address books? How do I get them to share the same one?
    Thanks.

Great. That does seem to be where Mail was getting it's information. I just deleted that whole list and life is better. Thanks for the info.

  • Setting up Snow Leopard Server with Address Book, iCal for Small Business

    Hello Folks,
I have a small business with 2-3 people and I want to setup Snow Leopard Server on a Mac Mini. I have everything in place, RAID, Backup drive etc.
What I need is a guide on how to setup the server correctly and how to setup Address Book Server, iCal Server, DNS, etc. I was in IT a long while back but have gone back to my creative roots and sworn off IT but I am in a situation where my IT guy's wife is pregnant so he is busy painting the baby's room, etc.
I was looking at Snow Leopard Server for Dummies and a few other books. Do you guys have any suggestions on resources for me to read or research that would give me very straightforward steps in getting this setup. I am at a point where I can re-install from scratch if needed.
For the ease of those that might respond let's assume I know my way around Mac and general networking as a whole.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Cheers,
    Jason

    Hi Guys,
First of, I will give you a brief background on me regarding networking as a mac user since 1994. I can setup and network multiple macs without a server in our home and small office. Turning file, print and internet sharing with a regular Mac OS X client version at no problem at all. This would be my first time setting up a Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server.
I'm in the same boat as Jakekub but we do not have a static IP from our DSL provider. We just bought a Mac Mini Server for our small office with 3 iMacs and 1 MacBook. We will just use the server for internal usage and to centralized things out and use some of server's features like Address Book, Mail, iCal etc. I've search the forums and found Orhidy's post here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2148553
I even followed the sample IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, DNS Server and I think I had it correctly setup initially. And I think I got it all running on the basic setup base on his instructions. So I tried to test my DNS settings via Terminal > hostname then got answer as
    servername.companyname.private
And double checking DNS again with a command: sudo changeip - checkhostname and was given an answer of:
    Primary address = 192.168.1.192
    Current Hostname = servername.companyname.private
    DNS Hostname = servername.companyname.private
The names match. There is nothing to change
    dirserv:success = "success"
But here's another one that bugs me. I tried to follow from "Mac OS X Snow Leopard for Dummies" the command line:
    NSLOOKUP hostname
    and got an answer of:
;; Got SERVFAIL reply from 192.168.1.192, trying next server
    Server: 192.168.1.1
    Address: 192.168.1.1#53
** server can't find hostname: NXDOMAIN
So does it mean that I still haven't configured my server properly?
Thank you all for the help in advance!

  • ICloud Deleted  Local Contacts From Address Book

Okay, so I tried setting up an iCloud account so a family member could receive texts and messages via iChat. That was the original goal. I successfully set up an account, but iChat does not allow me to login via the iCloud account that I had set up. After sever attempts I decided to put that on the back burner until I had a little more time to look into it. In doing so I seem to have caused some other collateral damage which I didn't anticipate (see below).
Unfortunately, as I logged out of iCloud on the iMac, it wiped/deleted every last contact that was in the address book. My question is: How can I get them back?
I suspect that there is a "previous" or "prior" image of the data what was there. I'm guessing that Apple put some type of safeguard in place for just such an occurrance, though I could be wrong.
The Machine is a 2011 27" iMac running 10.7.5. The last backup of the address book that I can get to is from 2011. Actually it's the Address Book Folder in users>Library>Applications Support.   I made a copy of the entire system drive AFTER everything was migrated over from the old system that was replaced, and have it on an external drive.
    Some notes:
    - Time Machine was not active or on
    - iCloud was never activated until just recently
    - the person does not own an iDevice with any of the contacts
    - iCloud does not seem to show any contacts to even bring back onto the iMac
It seems like a really silly thing to have any local data removed AT ALL upon signing out of iCloud. What's on the machine should remain on the machine unless the enduser literally goes out of there way to purposly delete the information stored there. There should be no dialog box what so ever even indicating that data will be removed, and even if the data was removed there should be an easy way to undo the action in case the enuser misinterpreted the action. Before any of the data is removed from the local the information (or at least a copy of it) should have been automatically stored to the cloudspace PRIOR. Why on earth would Apple set it up in such a way where the default is to delete any local data at all?

No. Absolutely not. We'll just have to agree to disagree. iCloud should be able to be turned on or off on any given device associated with said account. Local stores should be synchronized and that synchronization should happen continuously if connected. When not connected, local stores should maintain their state. What would be the purpose of even bothering to "sync". Or are you saying that in effect everything is copied to a central location (ie the cloud) and any devices wanting access to that data need to be "signed in", and in effect becoming nul terminals with no local store? Why should the default assume users would want to delete the synchronized data upon sign out?  iCloud should be a "use as needed" tool and not an "either/or" tool. In this case *it* should have backed the data up to begin with. That is the purpose after all. I (wrongfully) assumed in haste that the information was backed up or copied elsewhere and that even if I chose to delete it from the local device, I would still have access to it because it was stored "somewhere". And if the data wasn't synced/backed up to "the cloud" upon sign-in, then a friendly reminder alerting the user that now data had yet been saved would certainly go a long way. But this derails the entire thread. All I want to know is whether or not there is a way to retrieve the data that was erased from the iMac?

  • Address Book LDAP Integration

I'm trying to use a central LDAP server (openLDAP) for all the machines in my house. My problem is in the mapping of AB entries and the corresponding LDAP attributes.
It recognizes "telephoneNumber" in LDAP as "Work Phone" in Address Book. Also, "mobile" as "Mobile phone". But not "homePhone" as "Home Phone".
It does recognize "homePhone" on an LDIF import and populates the Home Phone in Address Book, so it does recognize the right thing to do in that case. (well, that's subjective)
There appears to be a mapping file within openLDAP. In /etc/openldap/schema/netinfo.schema I notice entries like:
    attributemap /users lastname sn
    attributemap /users firstname givenName
    attributemap /users state stateOrProvinceName
    attributemap /users zip postalCode
    attributemap /users phonenumber telephoneNumber
    <Wild Assumption>
So, I was thinking this maps Netinfo -> LDAP attributes. And defaults to some set of attributes where it doesn't provide a mapping. So mobile->Mobile is assumed, but phonenumber needs to be mapped to telephoneNumber and so it's provided here.
So my thinking is that if I can find the right Netinfo attribute to home phone number, I can provide the mapping in this file and problem solved...
    </Wild Assumption>
Of course, that may have nothing to do with it at all.
    Any info would be appreciated.

Powerbook, MacPro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

replying to my own post! sweet!
K, my wild assumption was way off. the AB sarches LDAP for these attributes.
    givenName
    sn
    cn
    mail
    telephoneNumber
    facsimileTelephoneNumber
    o
    title
    ou
    buildingName
    street
    l
    st
    postalCode
    c
    jpegPhoto
    mobile
    co
    pager
    destinationIndicator
    labeledURI
    IMHandle
So unless I can modify the ldapsearch query and/or modify how it maps those attributes to AB entries... I'm SOL. I've found nothing that will allow for a simple config change to make this happen, but there are some 3rd party stuff that might work. www.j2anywhere.com
But, I'm a bit of a purist (read: cheapskate) so I'm not willing to settle just yet.

  • Printing labels with Apple Address Book

I like to print Avery labels ( J8160-J8151 ) from my Apple Address Book.
A single label works perfect but I like to print 65 of the same labels on one sheet. How can I do this ?
How can I tell Address Book the printing-position on a sheet of labels when the first five labels are used ?
Where can I find a manual of Address Book ?
Please I like to have some suggestions,

    Daan,
There isn't a manaul for Address Book really, just the Help info.
You can't print a page of the same label. You also cannot choose the printing position. Apple has left it up to third party developers really to design products to take advantage of the Address Book database. The real power of Address Book lies in that it works seamlessly throughout the system and acts as a centralized contact database with which other software products can make use of the data.

  • Public Folders with Contacts vs Address Book

Which is the better approach: public folders with contacts or setting up an address book?
I want to set up some sort of address book to hold details of some of our major clients. Rather than each person maintaining his/her own address list the plan is for everyone to maintain a single list. As soon as we deal with a "new" contact at
one of our clients that person's details go into the central list and we all benefit.
In the past we've used public folders. However, it seems to me that they are quite a hassle with OWA so i was wondering why we don't simply create a new address book with:
New-AddressList -Name "MyCo – Customers" -RecipientFilter "(CustomAttribute1 -eq 'MyCo') -and (ObjectClass -eq 'Group')" -RecipientContainer "ad.ilbs.co/Habitats/myco"
    or should I use New-OfflineAddressBook -Name ...
Our team run a variety of systems (Windows and Mac) and a variety of phones (mostly IOS and Android)
    Roger

    Hi Roger,
According to your description, you want to share the contact which is created by each client users in OWA and Outlook to all other domain users for contact sharing. Is it right?
If that is the case, the Public Folder is an option to achieve this as you mentioned. For address list in server side, only the administrators who have related permission to Exchange server can create an address list in Exchange server generally.
For client users, they can’t create the address list for all other users using, though the contact folder permission is set to reviewer for all other users.
If you are using Public Folder contact (default folder permission set to Author), each user can create contacts in this folder and the contact can be visible for all users. Then the client user can do the following settings in Outlook to
manually add the Public Contact to address book:
    1. In Outlook, open Public Folder.
    2. Right-click Public Contact folder, select Properties.
    3. In Outlook Address Book tab, check Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book.
    4. Click OK to save the setting.
Then the Public Contact folder should be added in the Address Book.

  • 10.6.2 breaks syncing address book server contacts on iPhone?

I had this working, then I think it broke what I updated to 10.6.2.
Snow Leopard Server with Address Book Server. My 10.6.2 client can successfully connect to and sync contacts that are on the server. No problem. When I go to sync my iPhone, only the contacts that are stored locally on my machine sync, not the contacts on the server.
As I said, this was working, then one day it wasn't. I was able to sync the contacts that are stored on the server to my iPhone via iTunes. "All Contacts" is still checked, nothing changed other than 10.6.2 update.
Can anyone else verify this? Are you doing this? Is it working for you in 10.6.1? 10.6.2? Thanks in advance. (And yes, I have posted this in the SLS forum, but this isn't a server connectivity/behavior issue, it's between the iPhone and iTunes and Address Book.)

Apple says that if it used to work for me, as is described in the materials on the website which is the way it is supposed to work, that it was actually the unexpected behavior. Hm.
They did say to wait for an iPhone update which will allow the iPhone to talk directly to Address Book Server. For now, I should make a local group, copy the contacts from the server into that local group, and sync them that way. Kind of defeats the whole purpose of a central contacts server. Oh well. Here's hoping.

  • Can't locate address Book

Hi everyone, first of all, I'm new to Mac. I find my way around and is getting more and more from this system. This morning, I installed a sync program for my HTC touch phone and everything works fine. I decided to look to my address book and this is simply impossible to locate it.
It is not in the application folder however, I can access the contacts if I launch the Mail program and browse. I also tried to search the drive for "address book" with no results.
    Anyone can help?
    Thank you !

Try gumsie's suggestion of enabling the view of hidden files and folders. But I suspect there is a permissions problem there. Time to go back to the terminal then!
    1) Open Terminal
    cd /applications
    ls -lf | grep 'Adobe'
    2) Take note of the permissions structure listed for the directory (if it is listed), and post back.
    3) If it is listed try:
    cd /'Adobe Device Central CS3'
ls -lf | grep 'Address Book'
    4) Take note of the permissions structure listed for the directory (if it is listed), and post that too
    5) If we are looking good to this point (unlikely):
    mv /Applications/'Adobe Device Central CS3'/'Address Book.app' /Applications

  • Global Address Book Syncing

    Hey Everyone,
I work on a Mac at home and a PC at work, however I share contacts between both platforms. This leads me to two questions...
    1. What is the best way to transfer contacts from Outlook to Address Book for the initial sync.
( I have done some research on this, and I have attempted to send it out of Outlook as a CSV, however address book would not import the files; I would select Okay, however the system would not respond. Also I would prefer not to pay for software.)
    2. Is there a way that I can sync my contacts to a central server that both my Mac and PC would sync with? I realize that this is a crazy task, however syncing daily is crucial.
Thanks in advance for all of your help, I really appreciate your help and suggestions on this matter.

to import/export in csv format between address book and outlook look at these two links:
    http://homepage.mac.com/sroy/addressbookimporter/
    http://www.antoniolore.net/projects.php
but these links will not allow you to really and truly sync, just import and export and import and... you get the idea.
i do not know of any integrated solution that will achieve what you want to do directly between a pc and a mac, yet i think you may want to look at plaxo - www.plaxo.com - which allows you to sync your contacts from a mac's address book to plaxo online, and then to a pc's outlook.
    hope this helps
