Central file storage with Apple TV

Please forgive me but I am very new to this, but I have just been converted from PC to Mac and have been blown away.
I have purchased recently purchased a 1TB hard drive, airport express extreme and apple TV. I have spent the weekend trying to setup Itunes to store all of my films onto the hard drive via the usb port on the airport express.This worked okay.
What I can not figure out is how to play any of my music or films via the apple TV and the remote hard disk drive.
I have set the locations of all of the Itunes files via preferences to the remote hard drive and have allowed for file sharing of the hard drive but with no luck.
Could some one please point me in the right direction or am I asking the impossible.

the appleTV cannot connect/pair directly with the hard drive on the airport extreme. appleTV can only connect to iTunes running on a computer. you can set up the appleTV to stream from the iTunes rather than having to sycn files to it.. you can also turn on iTunes sharing so that all computers have access to the files as well.
i.e. if you want a central store of media files you
1) put all the media files on the hard drive
2) point iTunes to the files on the hard drive.. drag all the files from the external to the iTunes window... turn off the option to copy files to iTunes folder on import to make sure that only a reference to the location of the files is put into iTunes and the files themselves don't get copied..
3) pair the appleTV to the iTunes.. the best thing to do hear is to pair it as a *syncing library* (the option on the top of the page on appleTV > setting > computers.. you could just use the bottom sharing option, but with the syncing option if you happen to purchase an item from the appleTV it will be synced back to the iTunes Folder so it can be backed up.
4) then in iTunes when you click on the appleTV icon under devices, just turn off all the syncing settings on each of the media tabs..
5)also make sure that the option on the general tab "show only synced items on appleTV" is unchecked.. this will show the unsynced item on the appleTV but when clicked on they will be streamed..
that's it.. you have a centralized location (the external HDD) and you stream to appleTV and to other computers in the house (iTunes sharing).. computer must be on with iTunes open to stream.. under snow leopard.. a request from the appleTV will wake up a sleeping computer.. expect a small delay as computer wakes up, hard drives spin up etc..

I do a lot of machine embroidery. In moving from a PC to Mac, I've learned that none of my current embroidery software is compaitible with Apple OS. I'm happy to maintain those programs on a Windows laptop, but would really like to be able to view my designs on the Mac Mini. The files are *.pes. Online file storage with access control and file manager integrated to APEX website

I have APEX 4.2 website with few user accounts. I would like to share approximately 100 GB of documents to users. Some documents will be public (in some public folder) and everyone with account in my website will be able to download that public files. And some files/folders will be with restricted access and only user with appropriate credentials will be able to download it.
I would like to find some cheap cloud file storage.
Some storage that offers plugin/component = file manager that will be integrated to my APEX website and authentication will be transparent to my users (authentication with some API or URL). Every user will see only his files. I want some ready to use component and call only minimum API.
I would like to integrate that storage to my website or call some user specific URL and redirect my user to some page with file manager.
All files will be read only for all users.

what will you be using for your file manager? Or do you even know yet?
I do not have tons of experience but if I had to come up with a solution I would build the interface with APEX and use the database to store the files inside so you can control access.
You can create a procedure that takes in parameters like username, session id, encrypted session id from the browser cookie and either return the file or give the user an error message letting them know they arent authorized. You could use plugins to give the users a better file managing experience like the 'multiple file upload' plugin that allows AJAX based multiple file uploading.
Id put this on an amazon EC2 cloud micro instance. It's uber cheap.

MacPro as central file server with usb tape backup

Couple of questions. Here is what they want to do. Small office, graphics design, 5 people at the moment, currently they backup to cds/dvds which takes too much time and effort.
What they want
Have a central networked location to store there files / projects. Easy backups.
So I was thinking of the following.
MacPro with 2x TB Drives Mirrored to have redundancy on the machine, many not even need to do it. just a suggestion.
Usb External Tape Drive - > backs up data daily
Now the questions that I have for this setup
1) Would just the 10.5 Leopard client work fine or would have to go to Leopard Server?
2) Cant remember if still can do a software raid on the client side without needed the dedicated mac pro raid card.
3) Any recommendations on external usb tape drives that would work with the mac. I can get the software without any problems. Thinking about EMC Retrospect 8.0 for mac

I think you mixed - or I misled. There are some nice dual drive cases from FirmTek that are really nice, use drive sleds.

File Storage with IPhoto 6

Version 6 has made a real dogs breakfast of my photo filing system. Previously photo files after import were stored in a date hierarchy - Year/Month/Date. All very simple but now it uses Year/Roll Number.
Roll numbers mean nothing and make it very difficult to locate the file you want from other applications.
Is there a guru out there who can tell me how to get back to the sane filing method? It seems to me that I maybe should just trash iLife 06 and then re-install iLife 05 - either that or just go full time with Adobe Lightroom.
Either way I have some work to do getting my filing system back in shape - is there by any chance an Automator action that will search for all photo files and place them in a date folder hierarchy based on the date taken?

As you can see the structure is now related to rolls. Rolls are created for each folder you import and each import session from a camera.
It is very easy to change the names of film rolls within iPhoto to make them easier to find images within. Open the info panel in iPhoto by clicking on the "i" icon. Once it is opened, click on the roll title in the viewing window.
Click on the word "title" in the info pane and type in your new title. I like to use a date and text format such as 12/25/05 Christmas at Mom's, 1/05/06 my birthday, etc. Once the roll names are changed within iPhoto, they are also changed within the Finder, making it easy to locate an image.
When importing from a camera, make sure you name the roll with a date and text before the import.

The drive as a whole can’t be read on a PC without installing software such as MacDrive on it.
The answer varies for individual document files; some file formats can be read by Windows software, while others can't.

No. Apple will not do that. Your only alternative is to sell it and then use the funds raise to buy the new one with more storage.

There is not "fix" to be provided, Apple made a decision to not include the file sharing profile.

How can I get the size of a file with apple script

I try to get the size of a file within an apple script. But I did not find information how to do this.

There are two ways. I think Apple is moving toward using System Events, which is listed first.tell application "Finder"

Did you actually watch the movie? You get 30 days in which to view it and if you didn't watch it, that could be why you are getting that message. If you have watched the movie and you're sure that is has expired by now, contact iTunes Store Support and seek their help.
Change the country in the upper left. - and click on Purchases, billing and redemption to proceed.

HT4859 How can I verify that my App data is actually stored in iCloud. With Dropbox, I can actually see my stored files. With iCloud, itseems I'm supposed 2 just trust that Appl has the data. Short of doing a restore is there no way to check the data?

You can't access them on Windows (unless you have iCloud enabled Windows programs) and I don't think any are, yet.
iCloud data is accessed via Apps/Programs, the Windows programs vendors will have to step up (just to make it worse Microsoft have not yet enabled their Mac programs, such as Office yet) I doubt that iCloud access is much of a priority for them, complain to MS, when enough Windows users complain maybe they'll do something.

hello, I have a macbook pro and I have an appointment with apple to figure out what is loose in my hard drive, so before my appointment I want to back up all my files but while trying to set up my time machine, I accidentally deleted the main device, so now I cannot back up my stuff, is there anyway to retrieve the main device so that I am able to back up my stuff?

Instead of an apple, I get a file folder with a question mark!

Hi. I turned on my MacBook today, and instead of the apple popping on to the screen after a few seconds, I got something that looks like a file folder with a question mark in the middle of it. If the computer starts up after a brief delay, you probably just need to reselect your startup volume. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences. Click Startup Disk and select the the desired startup volume.
