Central NAS for iTunes Movies

Hello all;
I'd like to set up my home network to include network attached storage eg 500GB external hard drive, which I use as the location for my iTunes movies and music; the intention would be to allow all machines (Macs or Windows or Linux) on the LAN to download to and then read from this central drive, so for example I could download in one room and then go to another room and watch the movie on a more appropriate machine; essentially it is a central shared library on the network.
Assuming all iTunes instances point to the same file location, are there other gotchas I need to keep in mind? eg DRM?
Thanks - Oliver

Yes. It is the computers that are authorised, though you only have to authorise computers on which you want to access protected content.

  • How to add NAS for iTunes and backups

I would like to add NAS to home network of older iMac (OSX 10.7.4), win 7 notebook, soon to be added MacAir, plus iPad, iPhones, and sonos.  I would like to move iTunes from iMac external drive to NAS and also use NAS for time machine backups of the 2 Macs and a backup for the win 7 notebook.  Any recommendations on NAS for mostly Mac network?  Can I use the NAS for both iTunes and for backups?

Most of the big brands support TM.. QNAP and Synology being the main contenders.
Moving itunes library is always dangerous and TM will not back it up.. since it is now on a network drive.. so take steps to ensure the library cannot be lost. This is of course far easier on a brand that has automatic backups and mirrored drives.. that the TC.

  • Language for iTunes movie

I have bought a movie from iTunes, and it comes just in spanish. I would like to have it in english. Is it possible to select an additional  language after downloading? Is the language of the movies fixed prior to buying them? How could I select in What langage do I want a movie .

Im not 100% sure but i think it depends on the movie you have bought and if it has a multitrack recording or not. I dont think it would be possible to add another language after downloading.
The way to select the language you want in QuickTime Player is open the movie and then go To the 'View' menu up the top and go down to 'Langues' and there you will be able to see the options for the movie you have purchased.
What movie was it if you mind me asking, im interested in looking at what the movie says in the description.
    Hope this helped,

  • Closed Caption Features for iTune Movie Downloads?

While I was glad to see that Apple plans to offer a movie download service with the iTunes Store, I'm still inclined to NOT use the service if there's no assurance that closed captioned/subtitled movies will be available as well.
Will iTunes Movie downloads include captioned media?
Today's DVDs all have features enabling us to turn on captions/subtitles and it's already a shame that Netflix, according to a representative's comment made nearly two years ago, will not provide captioned movies "until the near future"...
I hope Apple takes its hearing-impaired (deaf and hard of hearing) customer base into consideration...and it IS a sizeable customer base.

The question on the minds of the millions of deaf and hard of hearing people is whether Apple will make or enable captioning for their downloadable movies. I blogged about this a few weeks ago at HearingExchange online here: http://www.hearingexchange.com/blogs/?p=93 Apple didn't consider people with hearing loss when they made their iPhone non-compatible with hearing aids and cochlear implant processors. For a technology company, they aren't keeping up with accessibility trends. This is both disheartening and disappointing for people who struggle to participate socially and professionally on a daily basis with the world at large.

  • Setting NAS for iTunes

I have a long standing problem using iTunes and a NAS connected to a MacBook Pro. I have gone into Preferences/Advanced and I have set the iTunes Media Folder on the NAS. It works fine until I switch the laptop and the NAS off. I usually switch on the NAS first and then the laptop. The laptop finds the NAS and iTunes works fine but the Media folder is always set back to the default one.
    Can anybody help?
    Andrea

Sorry but no. There are no viewing preferences for the iTunes Store.

  • Using Airport Extreme and External HD as Destination for iTunes Movies

I have a 1TB external HD hooked up to my Airport Extreme base station. It has 2 partitions since I only have a 160GB MacBook Pro. I would like to use the other half of the hard drive as a destination for my iTunes movie down loads, or for my aperture photos.
    Is this possible?

    How do you do it?
in iTunes > preferences > advanced, you have the option to change the +iTunes media folder location+. with the external mounted on your desktop, click on change and navigate to the external. iTunes will put all newly added content there.
if you want content added to the iTunes folder on your startup disk, point iTunes there via the advanced preference tab.
if you want to move selected content that already is in your library (on your startup disk), point iTunes to the external, select the content (e.g. all your movies), then right-click (or ctrl-click) and choose +consolidate files+ from the pop up menu. this will copy the selection to the specified location and you can delete the original files from your startup disk using the finder.
if you then want to purchase a new movie from the iTunes store, first check where iTunes is pointed, then download the file.
if you want files (e.g. music) to be added to the iTunes folder on your startup disk, temporarily point iTunes back there and import the files, then point iTunes back to the external.

  • Use of a NAS Drive, iTunes, Movies and Apple TV - Help please

I have an IMAC and i have a number of movies stored there within Itunes.
My Mac is operated in a Wireless Environment and when using Apple TV sometimes the IMAC cannot be located despite home sharing being on both devices and when it can be located and I watch a movie that is stored there sometimes the signal drops off which interrupts the movie.
The Apple TV is connected in a wired environment.
SOmeone has suggested that I should move my Itunes library music and movies to a NAS drive and connect that to my router which is hard wired,
    Suggestions help and guidance welcomed

Update: I've found a work-around that lets me watch the movies, although it disables the iTunes Extras content (but it's not deleted).
While looking through the files for the Extras content, I noticed that for the two films I've had trouble with (X-Men Origins and Twilight), the Extras content was located in a separate folder from the actual mp4 movie files. For all my other movies that have the Extras content (and that were working), the content was in the folder with the movie. I tried moving the content into the movie folders, but that didn't help. Eventually, I removed the extras content from my iTunes library, without actually deleting it.
This caused the Apple TV to pick up the movies as if they were by themselves without the Extra features, and allows me to play them directly without going through the Extras menu. Something about the way that the Extras content was downloaded and associated with the movies seems to have gone wrong with those two movies, whereas for the others it worked correctly.
This is obviously not a long-term solution if you want to watch the Extra content, but at least this way the movie is streaming correctly on the ATV.
PS: for those two movies I mentioned above, the Extras content was listed separate from the movie itself in the iTunes library; whereas for the correctly functioning movies with Extras, the content was listed as another "track" under the movie.

  • HT1657 Using a VGA adaptor with iPad 1 for iTunes movie rentals?

I have an iPad 1 with a VGA adaptor to display supported apps on external displays like YouTube and GoodReader. I tried to use this with a rented SD movie from iTunes and I got a warning along the lines of  "output device not supported for protected material." Is there a way to do play iTunes rentals on an external display from the iPad? This is simple on a MacBook.
    Thanks,
    RSR

    Hi bluemoon59,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The article below may be able to help you with this issue.

iTunes Store: Movie rental frequently asked questions (FAQ)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1657?viewlocale=en_US
Can I play my rental on more than one device?
If you download a rented movie on your computer: You can transfer it to a device such as your Apple TV (1st generation), iPhone, iPad, or iPod if it’s a standard-definition film (movies in HD can only be watched on your computer, iPad, iPhone 4 or later, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV). Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only exist on one device at a time.
If you download a rented movie on your iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV: It is not transferable to any other device or computer.
    Cheers,
    - Judy

  • Several home computers, 1 central place for iTunes?

    We have:
    A PC laptop running XP
    A Mac Mini on Leopard
    A 12" Powerbook G4 on Leopard
A 15" MacBook Pro on Leopard
    An iPhone
    A new Nano
    Phew!
Is it possible for them ALL to run off either 1 central iTunes library location, or 1 external hard drive dedicated to iTunes music, (but perhaps connected to a Mac, say the Powerbook?)

    Sounds intense!
A good idea, and a really cool one too is to look into the new airport extreme base stations. They have a lot of really cool features including wireless sharing of a USB hard drive. I think this would be an excellent cure for your multiple device woes. If you had a wireless hard drive any of the wireless computer (including the PC) would be able to access the music on the hard drive. All of the itunes libraries could then point to the hard drive and run off the same files.
Check it out here: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=60C 1CBAD&fnode=home/shopmac/mac_accessories/airportwireless&nplm=MB053LL/A
I wonder about simultaneous use of files but other than that it should work like a charm!
    Hope this helped!

  • How do we verify payment info for iTunes movies from our computer

we have tried numerous times to verify.
Nowhere is there a verify button to be found
when we try to rent a movie we keep getting the verify on your computer request for our billing info?
we have been renting movies forever and did so just six days ago now we get this vierify request that seems impossible to get rid of.
any suggestions besides going to acoount on iTunes store and reloading all billing and shipping info as we have done that ten times already

iTunes does not have provision for automatically storing one kind of media on a separate drive, so you have some basic decisions to make first.  Do you want these movies to still appear in your iTunes library, or are you content with browsing filenames on a drive in Finder when you want to look for one?  The second's the easiest thing because then you don't have to have an external drive permanently turned on and attached to your computer (wired or wireless).  To do that you literelly only need to drag your movies folder to an archive drive and delete movies from iTunes.  To watch them again you can add it back to iTunes while holding down the option key so the movie is used from its location on the external drive.
There's ways to move the movies to an external drive while keeping them in iTunes but the external drive iwll always have to be turned on and connected to the computer or you will see a bunch of broken link exclamation marks.
Realize what you are talking about is not "backup".  Backup (which you should do) is putting a second or more copy of items on external drives for the day when your internal drive fails and everything on it is lost, inclduing all your home photos and perhaps things that have been pulled from the iTunes Store and can no longer be re-downloaded.

  • Central library for ITunes

If I have a central pc acting as a server in my house, I assum I can use that to store my ITunes library on and then have all the PC's in the house use that directory for their ITunes? But, does each PC then count as one of my licences for my purchased ITunes files?

Yes. It is the computers that are authorised, though you only have to authorise computers on which you want to access protected content.
