Central place for Multimedia (Music, Photos, Videos)

Hello,
I currently have multiple devices accessing centrally managed storage (QNAP NAS). I want to be able to use the same storage on the NAS for different devices (iMac/Macbook Pro/iPhone), users and clients including iPhoto, iMovie and iTunes.
Does anybody have a 'best practice' to setup this? In short: from multiple devices and multiple users I want to be able to share music, photo's and videos.
Thank's for your time/reply in advance.
Regards,
Ploertje

  • Central, wireless, storage of all music, photos, videos, movies?

    Hi all,
Please excuse if this is covered elsewhere... i looked and could not find a direct answer.  A friend pointed me towards the DS214 play and after some research i am not sure i need to leave the apple family or pay for the Synology name.  As a somewhat tech saavy father of 2.5 kids (due May), i wanted to ask other apple parents if they have similar needs with their home enjoyment and see what solutions are out there.
My situation.  i have a 1TB imac and a macbook pro.  We store all music and tv shows/movies puchased on the imac so apple tv can access them.  we have our current iphoto library on the imac where we interact with iphones and ipads, and also apple tv for pics/home videos.
my problem is that i have tens of thousands of pics and a thousand home movies stored on external drives because i ran out of room on the imac hard drive and because iphoto wasn't performing well with so many files in one library.  we use iphoto manager (3rd party) to jump between libraries which is fine but not ideal.  I hate having different external drives connected for fear they may die one day or a cord gets pulled out or a child breaks one.  furthermore, i am using externals to back up my externals, etc etc.  it's a physical hardware mess.  i want to take my digital family life to the next level using a home HUB of sorts.
Here are a few examples of what we want, thanks in advance for any help!
    1.  We have an imac and a macbook pro laptop.  Is there any way to store the main photo library centrally so that we can edit and organize pictures and videos from both machines and have the changes/updates seamless appear on the other?  (thought was to store the iphoto library file on a hub or similar, not on the imac hard drive)
    2.  We have two apple tvs and would like both to be able to access all movies, music, photos, videos from a central storage.  right now they speak to the itunes library on the imac which is fine.  but neither can access our archive iphoto libraries stored on external hard drives connected to the imac.
    3.   Aside from buying a much bigger and more expensive computer, and putting everything back on the main hard drive...  my thought was if all these photos (and / or libraries) were stored in a central HUB location i could access them from both a laptop and imac and save myself the space on the computer hard drives and access them interchangeably without worrying about an external drives being unplugged, dropped, etc.
But this goes back to #1 and #2 above, can all these files, found in either one huge iphoto library and itunes library, or several libraries, be stored in a central wireless HUB location and be accessed and shared and enjoyed as if they were sitting on the main computer hardrive?
Lastly, i would like the ability to back everything up... meaning a HUB that had two drives or a partition so it could back itself up.   basically swapping out 3 USB connected hard drives used as storage and backup for some sort of wireless HUB, that can be used by a few computers, apple tv and back itself up?
thank you very much in advance.  I hope all this makes sense....
    best,
    JW

iPhoto Libraries must be located on a drive that is formatted OS X Extended (journaled) with ownership set to be ignored for it to work properly and be used by more than one user.  It should not be accessed wirelessly as that can lead to library database corruption due to dropouts occurring when writhing to the library's database file.  The following is from this Apple document: iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users - Apple Support.
It's recommended that you store your iPhoto library on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing your iPhoto library on a network share can lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss. If you use both iPhoto and Aperture with the same library, using a Mac OS X Extended formatted volume is recommended. For more information, see Aperture: Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library.
As you know iPhoto has been discontinued and is being replaced by a new application called "Photos".  It will have integration with the iCloud Drive and offer library sharing of some kind between Macs.  We'll have to wait for it's release sometime this Spring before we know more.

  • HT1399 Why cant I create a playlist for my music/song videos? Continuous play is also not possible in the video app on the phone!!!! previously, prior to IOS 6, it was possible to have both music videos & songs mixed in the same playlist in the music app

Why cant I create a playlist for my music/song videos? Continuous play is also not possible in the video app on the phone!!!! previously, prior to IOS 6, it was possible to have both music videos & songs mixed in the same playlist in the music app

I am back with an update. I turned off Match on both the ipad and the iphone 5. By doing so I was able to sync my Iphone and ipad to itunes and store the music on my devices rather than the slow streaming.  So far this has fixed my problems with the iphone I have all my music, playlist, most of the album art and so on.  But the ipad is a different story.  I have the music and artist but not one playlist  I am sure Apple will have an upgrade soon that will address these issues they are usually very good about this.
Now have any of you experienced another problem that has existed as long as I have used faces in Aperture.
I have over 200 faces and they are organized a-z problem is I have this going on A-Z folowed by a few that start over A-Z followed by another few A-Z and again a 4th time A-Z.  Imagine how difficult it is while I am showing someone the great features of my iphone, ipad and imac.  Which I do talk highly of all the time.  But how do I explain that even though their name starts with a or b or what ever they are not important enough to me to be in the first list of A-Z or even the 2nd or 3rd list of A-Z someohow they are in the 4th section of the list!!!!
I have managed to get the Imac to fix this but for some reason the IOS devices do not.   Any ideas?
    Thanks Al

  • Transfering Music/Photos/Videos from A 5th gen Ipod....

Well I have my old 5th gen 30 gig ipod that was last used on a pc with Vista but that pc is nolonger working so i went and got a laptop with Vista I tried the old method i used to transfer from the ipod to the computer but it's not working the way it did before...
Now I want to load the Libray from the 30 gig ipod to the itunes libray on the laptop so i can then load it to my new 80gig ipod how can i do it with out losing my stuff on the 30gig?

Connect your iPod to your new computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only

    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
There are various programs out there for recovering photos from an iPod, have a look at the ones below. If you search the internet you can find more. Just be aware that what you'll be recovering will be photos optimised for the iPod so they won't be the same quality as the original full resolution versions:
    iPodPhotoCopy Windows only
    CopyPodPhoto Windows only
Tansee iPod Transfer Photo Windows only
iPod Photo Liberator Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
Keith's iPod Photo Reader Mac only
If you have full resolution copies of the photos on the iPod have a look here: Apple Knowledge Base article - Use Disk Mode to copy photos from iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • TS1591 My ipod classic (80gb) won't sync with my mac & itunes. How can i fix this without losing all my data? (ie. music, photos, video)

My ipod classic is still working, its not frozen or anything. It just won't sync up with my macbook and itunes. I recently realized that I had previously connected it to a PC just to charge it then it when i tried to connect it to my mac, it wouldn't sync up. Can someone help me figure this out? I don't want to lose all of my data though, like music, photos, or videos. Any help is appreciated! Thank you for your time!

okay, I don't know about the rest, but about the songs never actually loading onto your iPod, I found in another discussion how to fix that. I'm using Windows 7, so I don't know if the steps are the same, but the end result is the same. So go into your Start menu, then into accessories, right click 'Command Prompt' and click 'Run as administrator'. Then type in the following: netsh winsock reset then press Enter. After a few seconds it should tell you to to restart your computer for changes to take effect. Restart your computer, then restart iTunes, then everything should be working fine. It still takes forever sometimes to update the iPod, but eventually it will work. I've had to do this multiple times, so I'd suggest copying & pasting this solution into a notepad or Word document and saving it on your computer, so you don't have to go through the discussions again to find it. This tends to happen to me nearly every day unfortunately Hope this fixes that problem, but I'm not having any of the other problems fortunately, except for removing the artwork of the songs it updates without me asking it too. PS I think my problem may be with iOS 5, because iTunes 10.5 came out before iOS 5, and I think everything was fine before I updated my iPod, but I really don't know where the problem lies

  • Saving of Music, Photos & Video

I will admit that I am a newbie.  Just received my A1 tablet and can't get the LeTools app to work but can get Windows to see the device as a "Storage Drive".  So my question is under what folders on the tablet do you save your music, photo's and videos into.  They are not very self explanatory.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Android should be smart enough to find them for you. Feel free to create a folder(s) with any name you want for your media.
If you are looking for photos that you have taken with your device, they are in a folder called "DCIM" (or something very similar.)

  • Music, Photos, Videos -- A problem has occurred.

When I start up Front Row, I Can only play a dvd, the other icons, Music, Photos and Videos are not vissible but when I use my left and right key I can scroll through them and select an item, whem I select dvd I can play one.
But when I select, photos, videos or music I get the message "a problem has occurred".
I've tried to reinstall Front Row from the cd but this doesn't help.
What can I do about it?
My computer is about one week old...
EDIT: After all, playing a dvd isn't possible at all :-d
    Message was edited by: joachim_vanhove

Here's something that might help: I was doing some research on the Apple support website for a Front Row problem I was having where it didn't show all my music and wouldn't play my playlists -- just said "A problem has occurred." Yet, everything worked fine directly from iTunes. The article I found explained that Front Row only will play songs, etc. that are checked in iTunes. I went into iTunes and checked all the songs in my library, and presto! Now it works great.
    Hope this helps.

  • Best program for getting music and video off my iPod?

    We have:
    A PC laptop running XP
    A Mac Mini on Leopard
    A 12" Powerbook G4 on Leopard
A 15" MacBook Pro on Leopard
    An iPhone
    A new Nano
    Phew!
Is it possible for them ALL to run off either 1 central iTunes library location, or 1 external hard drive dedicated to iTunes music, (but perhaps connected to a Mac, say the Powerbook?)

    Sounds intense!
A good idea, and a really cool one too is to look into the new airport extreme base stations. They have a lot of really cool features including wireless sharing of a USB hard drive. I think this would be an excellent cure for your multiple device woes. If you had a wireless hard drive any of the wireless computer (including the PC) would be able to access the music on the hard drive. All of the itunes libraries could then point to the hard drive and run off the same files.
Check it out here: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=60C 1CBAD&fnode=home/shopmac/mac_accessories/airportwireless&nplm=MB053LL/A
I wonder about simultaneous use of files but other than that it should work like a charm!
    Hope this helped!

  • Best place for scratch files, imported video on laptop with single drive

    Hi all,
I read that is was best to put the scratch files on a disk other than that the program resides on, so I did. That makes sense.
But later, when I was reading about people's problems with CS4 crashing, I read I'm not meant to be using USB drives .... so, my question is:
On a laptop with a single hard disk and a USB external drive, where is the best place? Do the performance problems with scratch files on a single disk trump those of using USB or vice versa.
Perhaps its something I'll have to try myself but wondering about other people's experience.
    Cheers

I'm with Harm on the eSATA. I will say that FW-800 works for me, but as more of my externals offer eSATA now, I'll probably migrate to that connection very soon. Even with 3x 200GB 7200RPM SATA II HDD's on my laptop, I do a lot of work with externals, 'cause I migrate the Projects to my workstation. Just remember to set a unique drive letter for the external(s) in the OS of all computers, or you WILL have issues. An eSATA card is cheap, though your externals need to have the connection. Externals are also cheaper now. I'm paying the same for 2TB units, that I paid for 250GB ones, when they first came out! For what I paid for a 1.5TB RAID NAS, I could now get 16TB in a hot-swappable enclosure.
As for USB's, I tried that years ago, and gave up in frustration. The connection was just too slow, and often timed out, or worse. I'd not do that again, on a bet - sorry, but I am too impatient and then there were the crashes...
