Central storage issue

I have a 'machouse' (mac mini, 2 Airs and a Pro). I use an airport extreme as the base station, and I have an old airport express that is currently unused. I wanted to have a central storage option for all the computers to access media (save media to), photos and do backups to. A computer store listened to my request and then suggested a NAS ... they sold me this:http://ain.mediasonic.ca/store/produ...roducts_id=257
After saving up and purchasing more drives (total of 4 @ 2TB each) I have found out that I do not DO NOT have a NAS, this is a 4 bay enclosure (set to RAID 10). How can I set this up to use as I wish. I have the AE if that helps ...
Thanks!

Your question does not really have anything to do with AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule.
You will need to purchase a dedicated NAS drive. Something like one of these devices, for example:

  • LSO 600 Configuration - Central Storage Location for XSLT Files

    Hi,
We are implementing LSO 600 with enhancement pack 2 and I am haiving trouble figuring out what do do with the configuration steps
Enter Address of Central Storage Location for XSLT Files
    and
Enter Address of Central Storage Location for Templates.
The config notes indicate that these can be a directory or network path with the format
    servername\filename\.
As I understand it this is is the address of the file on the Portal Server where  XSLT files and templates be stored. The problem that I am hearing from the basis team is (I am qouting an email from them) "who accesses the share? Is it the server, the client PC or both? We’re running in a linux environment so I don’t have any shares the PC can access."
    Does anybody have any input?

  • Oracle 10g RAC using ASM - Storage Issue

I’ve an issue related to Oracle 10g RAC.
I’ve 2 node cluster each being Dell 2850 Server with RHEL 4.0
I’ve EMC CX300 SAN storage with following partitions
    /orasoft     10 Gb          OCFS2 File system
    /oracrs          2 Gb          OCFS2 File system
    /orabackup      100 Gb          OCFS2 File system
The datafiles are on ASM which is not directly visible in OS.
I’ve common Oracle Home installed in /orasoft/db_1 which is shared by both nodes in cluster.
I’ve faced an issue recently related to EMC storage.
The /orasoft partition displays 1.4 Gb space available using df command.
With both nodes sharing the common Oracle Home (/orasoft/db_1), when ever I try to touch a file I get an error as No Space left on device. I’m unable to start any service with the same reason.
    Is this setup correct ??
Can anyone help me with this storage issue ??

Need a clarification here...what do you mean by "Storage System"...do you mean a server/node or the SAN storage system. If you are referring to a server/node's local storage, then it would NOT be possible for use by RAC, since the disk space has to be shared among the nodes.
Here is what you can do:
    - Create two partitions/devices (for example Disk_1 and Disk_2) in the SAN storage
    - Create a ASM disk group which would mirror Disk_1 to Disk_2.
Again, please note that the partitions have to be visible and be accessible read/write from both the nodes/servers.

    Hi,
If you create a new diskgroup you may be to add the same diskgroup to parameter file or spfile and which will be needing down time.
sugestion: Instead of creating new diskgroup you should to add disk to existing group.if you add asm disk to existing group your all problem will be solved and Oracle itself will be managing all.And than i am sure no need to add entry in the parameter or spfile like +db_create_file_dest=.....

  • ICloud storage issue; Restoring iPhone calendar from iMac after accidental iCloud deletion

I set up iCloud to back up calendars and contacts and for find my phone.  Initially, it seemed to work alright.  Then I got messages on iPhone that there wasn't enough iCloud storage, even though the storage tab showed that I had used none of my iCloud storage at all.  So I turned off iCloud/contacts.   In iTunes I switched back from iCloud backup to backup from my iMac.
Later I got the same message about not enough room in iCloud even though only calendars involved.  So I truned off iCloud/calendar on my iPhone and was given the choice of keeping the calendars from the iCloud or deleting them (a foolish choice without a failsafe!!!).  I clumsily and mistakenly hit delete.  My calendars have most recently been synced with my new iMac and appear on the iMac and should also be in TM.  But right now there is no data in my iPhone calendar.
When i go to calendars within the iiphone calendar there is a check next to Calender under "from MY Mac" and no reference to iCloud.  (There are no separate calendars for me, my wife, and joint.  Does this mean somehow these calendars have been merged because of iCloud?)
I don't want to do another sync until I can make sure that the sync with the iMac will resotre the calendar(s) to the iPnone.  How do I do this?
Do I have to do anything on the iMac before I try a sync?
How do I avoid these problems in the future?  The only thing I really would like from iCloud is "find my phone".  How do I keep that capability without backing up or su=yncing otherwise anything through iCloud?
    Is iCloud still Beta?

Apple walked me through this and helped me revert to backing up on my iMac, using iCloud only for find my iPhone and iMac.  The process, however, is not straightforward and what the respective mac and iPhone support people (yes, they have that kind of specialization) led me through was clearer, if somewhat convoluted, than any instructions on Apple's support or community pages.
Since my main concern was not losing my calendar and contacts information, the key was saving that, via export, to my desktop.  Sorry I didn't write down all the other steps - but I see that as Apple's job.  Back in the days of the IIC, Apple's manual was a model of clarity and completeness at the same time.
Bottom line is while my immediate concerns were resolved, the underlying iCloud storage issue was not.  On my iPhone, I was being told that my attempts to backup to the iCloud failed because I didn't have enough storage, even though I determined almost none of my alloted space was used.  This issue is not helped by the multiplicity of settings relating to iCloud, or the interfaces (such as the iCloud on the iMac through Mavericks) which present a screen of icons without additional information.
For my purposes, iCloud remains Beta.

  • Ios 8.2 storage issue

I have an iPhone 5s 16GB. Ever since I updated to ios 8.2, I have had random storage issues. One day after updating I received a message "storage almost full".  30 seconds later another message that my storage was full. Shut off my phone and did a hard reset. No change. Started to delete pictures, videos and apps. Available storage began to increase. After all of this it reported I had 1G available. Phone was good for about 6 hours. Noticed storage was decreasing by the hour and was down to 324 Mb. Deleted almost all my apps. Storage showed 1.3 Gb. Thought problem was solved. Noticed last night storage was 2.0 GB. Thought this was weird. This morning back to square one 0 bytes available. Apple needs to get it together with this update!!  I've read several other post on this forum with exactly the same issue. Deleted a few more apps this morning. 116mb free at this time, but I don't expect it to last.
Wanted to start a new thread with this problem.

You don't have enough physical storage space on the device for the update to take place. The process can use ~6 -~7 GB of storage space. You can possibly free up the required space by deleting apps and other data. The easiest way to do the update with all of the deleting required is to update the device using iTunes & your syncing PC. No additional storage space is required on the device when updating through iTunes.
Beforehand though, you should delete the update residing on your device under Settings/Usage, then under the Starge heading: Manage Storage. A list of installed apps will be displayed here. You can delete the update by finding it in the list (it should be near the top since they are sorted by size, largest first), tapping it, then tapping the red Delete App button.
EDIT: BTW, after an update, there's no way to revert back to the previous version. If you don't have the required space on the device for the process, the update will simply not install.

  • If I subscribe to iTunes Match and later don't renew, will that impact the songs I've stored on my PC or phone or only the central storage in iCloud?

If I subscribe to iTunes Match and later don't renew, will that impact my access to music I have stored on my devices or will it only end my access to the central storage in iCloud?  Thank you!

It won't delete anything in your iTunes library on your computer but you would lose access to anything in your iTunes Match library that isn't stored in your iTunes library on your computer.  You would obviously need to sync your music to your phone from your computer using iTunes again.

  • Central storage solution for video & digital content

I'm looking for advice on storage solutions for a small scale (audio) recording studio which is expanding into video and post production.
There is a simple wired/wireless network connected via a simple Netgear wireless/ethernet router to which two MacPros (ethernet), one iMac (wireless) and one MacBook (wireless) are connected.
Currently audio is recorded onto 10,000rpm drives in the main MacPro and then archived onto SATA drives in a firewire Wiebetech traydock system. There is also an Apple Time Capsule which backups up the other computers.
The system is rather fragmented and messy and I'm looking to upgrade to a simpler and more resilient system for managing all this. I've been using Mac for a long time but haven't kept abreast of central storage solutions.
Advice on a simple central storage solution would be appreciated. Thanks.

One thing I'm unsure about is the difference between Firewire 800 and Ethernet as connection protocols between a computer and an external drive or RAID. I've seen "Networked" external storage devices that look quite simple ( eg IOMEGA StorCenter ix2-200 Network-Attached Storage - 4TB)
Are both suitable for connecting an external drive/RAID, providing adequate bandwidth for uncompressed HD video editing?
With a standard 4 year old MacPro and ethernet routed via my Netgear Wireless Router, what would the bandwidth be?
Thanks for any answers to these basic questions.

  • What's the best way to setup a media server/central storage for all of my?

I was wondering what the best way to achieve a central media server for all my iTunes content + iPhoto's, calendar syncing and contact sharing is? This is what I currently have:
iMac 20" Aluminum + External HD Backup (kids)
    Macbook Black (wife)
    Macbook Pro 15" (me)
    Airport Extreme 802.11n (obvious)
TimeCapsule 1TB (wifi backup for wife/me)
I would like to replace my PC in my office with a brand new Mac Pro Nehalem 8-Core, 8GB Ram, and 4TB, and replace my PC laptop in my living room attached to my tv, with an Apple TV.
I want to centralize all our Photos from vacations, etc. Music, videos, movies, that are currently split up over wife's macbook, kids imac and my macbook pro onto my soon to be purchased Mac Pro.
I want to be able to stream everything from my living room via Apple TV for when guests come over, dinner parties, etc. (plus I love apple and it keeps things clean)
I'm currently using MobileMe to sync all of our Calendars and Contacts with my main account, which is great, but MobileMe doesn't sync to family members accounts =
What would I need to do to centralize all this onto my future Mac Pro so that everyone has access all the time when they are home and the key here is, modify/update/change from their machines and sync it back/update it on the Mac Pro.
Also, I'm hoping Snow Leopard has some changes to iTunes to make this a little more possible, since we're right around the corner from this release. I don't really want to spend an additional $900+ on Snow Leopard Server to have to achieve these results, but if it makes it easier, and does the job, then I guess I might. This is all speculation though, since it's not out yet. I'd like to get this all sorted and setup within the next month.
I was considering a Drobo, they say they can throw up iTunes Server but, I appreciate everyone for reading this, and taking the time to respond!
    Thanks!

I'm in the process of setting up a smaller (and cheaper) but somewhat similar setup to what you want to do, so maybe one example might help point you in the right direction. My needs consist of a centralized location for data storage, which will include iPhoto libraries (I keep two separate ones), iTunes (which I also want served to the home theater system), something other than my laptop to play internet videos and downloaded content on my TV, all with ideally the lowest cost and energy use possible.
My solution was the new Mini with a FW800 external drive as the server/media hub and Airport gigabit as the network hub (it also handles the backup drive).
FW800 is fast enough to saturate a gigabit ethernet link, so I don't consider that much of a bottleneck. The Mini then has iTunes running at all times with its centralized library on it; it is hooked to the home theater via HDMI-DVI video and optical audio, so it can play music and also handle videos when desired; Front Row with the Apple remote is close enough to an AppleTV that I think it handles that well, and it's more full-featured than an AppleTV. It can further be used to display photos/slideshows/whatever on the TV for guests or such, or to surf from the couch with a wireless mouse/keyboard. You can also toss in an EyeTV for $150 and use that as a DVR if you feel like it.
When I want to edit photos or such on my desktop, the gigabit link is fast enough that I can run iPhoto without noticing any significant slowdown. Its also usable over wireless, though I have a dangling extra network cable to plug into a laptop for full gigabit speed if need be. iTunes, of course, shares its library, which can be played from any of the computers in the house if so desired (iPhoto can do that too if you just want to display).
If I REALLY wanted top speed (though I've even done video editing in iMovie via ethernet without issue), I could use a third party synch app (I like Sync) to mirror any of the content from the mini server to a local drive; this works fine with anything but multi-way synching, such as address books being modified in different locations. I'd probably try to set up one of those Mobile Me clone systems or use a 3rd party app if I needed to do that.
Again, maybe this isn't powerful enough or "synched" enough in terms of local storage for your taste, but the advantage is that a Mini uses a minute fraction of the power of a Mac Pro, so you're saving a lot on electricity if the computer will be powered up at all times as a server, and it's also a lot more full-featured as a home theater media hub than an AppleTV. And, heck, the thing is about as well equipped as my old top-of-the-line G5 tower for a 5th the cost and 1/15th the power and noise.

  • Best alternative for central storage of a NAS

    Hi All,
I own a macbook pro and an Imac.
Next to that I use a NAS from QNAP to store my data centrally. That should make it easy to use my data on every device that I have.
But in reality the NAS is very slow in relation to my apple products. With a windows machine it's fine. But showing up in Finder is a pain in the ash.
When looking to the competition, also Synology has lots of issues on that part. As can be read on all the user forums.
So, if I want to have an alternatieve solution with the following features:
    1) Store all my content centrally and use it on my apple products (so data is only on the central location)
    2) Backup the data from my central location to a location that's not in my house (for cases of theft or fire).
    3) Where the connection with the apple products is fast.
As far as I know there's not something within the apple product range, but that could be my misunderstanding of the product line.

When I saw 2TB, it triggered these questions:
    ISP
Sufficient upload/download transfer caps to achieve your goal
Sufficient bandwidth between you and your cloud services provider to achieve daily backups
Edge device upgrades for higher bandwidth performance to ISP
    Cloud Services Provider
Assurance your data remains on servers in your country
Sufficient storage expandibility and fits expense budget
Sufficient cloud performance to achieve 1.2, and subquent document access
    Adequate cloud management software interface
Reviews and other documented evidence of cloud service reliability
    Personal Document Security
One can place password protected documents in a folder
With Disk Utility, create new disk image from folder
    Compression
    256-bit AES encryption
    Protection against 2.1 disregard

  • Central storage

Hello all!  I'm needing assistance.  I am upgrading from FCPS3 to FCPX.  I am also going from 1 2009-mid iMac 2.66 intel core2duo to 2-5K i7 iMacs 16gb ram, 3tb fusion drives, 2gb graphics cards.  I see in the FCPX that I can share files/video from 1 source [SAN?] (http://www.apple.com/final-cut-pro/all-features/ - Sharing with Xsan).  I think this is something I'm interested in doing - but I'm not sure (cost plays a part).  I am a wedding videographer in a home-based business with my wife editing as well.  I would like to store all data on 1 central location & HDDs when needed to this storage.  I want to connect a physical wire to this location from each of my 2 iMacs and have faster speeds than my USB 2.0s that I'm using.  Is this something I should be looking at and a realistic solution for my end-goal?  For those who do this sort of thing, I'd like to pick your brain:
    1) What empty bay product should I purchase?
    2) What other wires/??? do I need to have?
*Key, my thoughts were to get a NAS 5-bay holder that has ethernet ports on the back and connect my iMacs to this using their Ethernet Ports.  - will this work for FCPx???
Here is what I thought as possible bays:

Here is a possible solution that won't break the bank. For two users in the same location, it looks like it should work beautifully.
    (I haven't tried it)
Note: in this situation you'd want to use external media, stored in the fast drive, and probably copy your library locally, as FCP X would not work with a library on a volume which is shared from another mac. But your libraries will be pretty slim using external media, and external media is a must when sharing, so you'd do that on a SAN anway.
That's the problem. The theory is great. The reality might be a bit different.
There are permissions and network bottleneck issues. There are weird things going on at the OS level when two machines are connected to the same drive. There are hacks you can try. There are software solutions. There are hardware solutions. There are out-of-the-box solutions. By the time you have hacked it yourself, you could have bought a commercial product and saved yourself all that trouble.
I'm not saying it can't be done but do the research and see if what others have learned will help you make a good decision that is economical and practical.
Our NFS runs on a Windows server and is connected via fiber. Your IT people dreamed it up and thought their system was completely plug-n-play. It didn't work without three of our IT guys working for about ten days EACH (that's totally EXPENSIVE) to fix their misperceptions. But now it's awesome. Still, we would have been w-a-y ahead budget-wise if they'd just bought the darn thing from a vetted dealer. Great experience for them.
