Centrifugal compressors simulation

Hello,
I'm performing my graduation project with a company in Tunisia and I have a problem. The main idea of the project is to make a simulation of a centrifugal compressor using LabVIEW.
My first step is to make the front panel as an interface which contain a centrifugal compressor as an indicator and some simple boolean controls
==> (it's a simulation of a real system without hardware).
My problem is how to put the centrifugal compressor from Solid Works to the LabVIW front panel as a picture then to use it dynamically
Example:
When I actuate a boolean button I should see it moving (in the front panel and not in the Solid Works) .
If it's possible, can I have an example or can you tell me how to proceed.
Thanks in advance & Best regards,

Hello,
You can put "LabVIEW and Solidworks" on Youtube and you will find many tutorials for your application.
The videos will help you more than a long speach.
Best regards,
Alexis

• Mysterious Changing of a Clip's Size (Zoom In)... WGO??

Running FCP Suite 7.0 on an 8-core Xeon, 2.8GHz with Snow Leopard. After sending a video project to Compressor, and viewing the simulated DVD in DVDSP, I saw that several sections of my video had been "zoomed" with obvious image degradation.
I returned to FCP to correct the error knowing that I had not changed the scale settings *at all* or ever. After going among the several different sequences that comprised my project, I returned to a sequence I had previously fixed only to discover some clips had again "zoomed" themselves.
I quit the app, and rebooted. Fixed the clips again and verified they stayed correct. Sent to Compressor and simulated again in DVDSP. Same problem.
I shut down the computer. Started it up again. Opened my project, created a new "composite sequence" and then brought all the other sequences into it. Sent it to Compressor, simulated in DVDSP -- and it seemed to work.
Not sure if there's an issue -- or my initial composite sequence had somehow been corrupted. I had littered it with 32 chapter markers, but nothing fancier than some text superimpositions and cross fades.
Anyone else getting mysterious FCP bugs such as this?

DSLR is the event that's selected. The clip MVI_1681 has two selections, both in the test keyword collection. Here I can make a note to one selection and not the other. If I make the note in the keyword collection it happens as you describe. Not sure why that is. May be a bug.
It may help you to filter in the event browser for just the clips in the keyword collection you want. Press Cmd-F. Click + and choose keywords. Select just the keyword you want and only those clips will appear in the browser as they if you select the keyword collection.
Sorry can't add the image on the forum at the moment. Forum is messed up.

• 16:9 problem from fcp- compressor- dvd studio.

Using Compressor 1.2.1
I shot mini-dv(xl-2) in 16:9 mode.
I tried using the widescreen Compressor preset but when I import the my assets to DVD studio 2.0 the aspect ratio is squished to 4:3. Using the display tab I changed it to 16:9, looks fine. But when i try to simiulate, it doesn't work and there an off black 4:3 box in the middle of the 16:9 simulation box. burning does the same. both do not play.
My presets are marked for 16:9.
dvds of the project, burn fine using the best settings of fcp Conversion and DVD studio, but i'm having problems going through Compressor first.
Any ideas?
fcp 4.5, compressor 1.2.1, dvd studio 2.0

fcp 4.5, compressor 1.2.1, dvd studio 2.0
Are you really using DVD Studio Pro 2.0 There is a 2.0.5 update available. You also want to make certain that you have updated to the recommended Pro App Support package.
What aspect ratio do you have set in the simulator preferences (4:3 Letterbox, 4:3 Pan & Scan, or 16:9)?
Also, note the following from the DVD Studio Pro 2.0 help file (PDF):
"The most common error is to letterbox your 16:9 video assets before bringing them into DVD Studio Pro or QuickTime MPEG encoding systems. Once a 16:9 asset has been letterboxed, it becomes a 4:3 asset with black bars along the top and bottom of the video image. If you flag letterboxed source video as 16:9 video when encoding it, you will have problems when you play it back later."
That sounds somewhat like the problem you are having. Have you reviewed the "Preparing Assets" section in the DVD SP help file?
If this suggestion helps in any way, a confirmation or acknowledgment would be appreciated, since that would also help others who may be having the same difficulty. Do for others as you would have them help you.
Thanks for sharing, Waymen.

• How do I avoid or get rid of thin green line bordering my video in Compressor?

Hello!
This is my work flow:
Edited an 18 minute 1920 x 1080 ProRes video on FCP 7, exported a master video file ProRes 422 self-contained QT movie, sent to Compressor (tried Best DVD 90-minutes and ProRes codec settings) to prepare files for a SD DVD in DVD Studio Pro.
My issue: I am getting a THIN GREEN LINE bordering my entire video on the Compressor file.
My master video file is perfect, no green line, however once it's gone through Compressor (tried both Best DVD 90 minutes and ProRes codec settings) the video has a thin green line that I can see in the DVD Studio Pro preview and simulation. The burned DVD also has it.
I would like to author the work in DVD Studio Pro as it is a looping video work for exhibition so I have the video file 6 times on the DVD rather than have it re-start at first track every time.
Seems like it has to do with downscaling the 1920 x 1080 video to SD for DVD.
Searched the web and there doesn't seem to be a clear explanation for it besides this discussion about 16s but doesn't clarify in regards to the problem downscaling to SD DVD.
Thanks so much to anyone with the magic answers!

PAL - 1080 / 576 = 1,875
NTSC - 1080 / 480 = 2,25
DVDs are standard definition, so your original file has to be compressed to those pixel dimensions. As you can see above the number of HD horizontal lines don't divide by an even number into SD horizontal lines, so you get partial lines left over that the TV system doesn't really know how to interpret - that's the green bit.

• Compressor for dvcprohd 1080i60 material

hi -
i've just finished editing a sequence in fcp 5.1.4. the settings for the sequence are dvcprohd 1080i60 @ 29.97.
i'm trying to author a dvd using dvd studio pro. i exported the sequence using the dvcprohd 1080i60 compressor. when i open the material in dvd studio pro (whether in the simulator or in the viewer), i notice that there are artifacts.
is this because i am using the wrong compressor? should i be using mpeg 2 to export from fcp? i'm simply trying to author a standard definition dvd at the highest quality possible (it is only a 3 minute sequence) so any help in terms of workflow/compression would be great...
thanks in advance.
paul

Exporting to Compressor from FCP (encoding directly to SD mpeg2) will be the best way to go. There is one more option you can use to ensure the best possible quality:
Since the frame is being resized, you can activate the frame controls in Compressor - setting the resize filter to best will force Compressor to do a smoother job of the image resampling, but it can greatly increase encoding times.

• 1) Compressor artifacts and 2) Processes not responding

The whole reason I switched from Windows/Premier to Mac/Final Cut was to avoid broken software. I'm beginning to think the Mac is no better. Well, that's not entirely true. I think OS X is more stable than any version of windows but DVD Studio Pro 4.0.2 is a step back in stability at least for me. Before upgrading to Tiger and FCS, I could reliably build and burn DVDs. Now I can no longer pry a complete working DVD out of DVDSP4.
I've got so many problems and so many questions I don't know if I should post them all in one message. I guess I'll keep them in one message but try to keep it short.

BACKGROUND
I shoot and edit a weekly local soap opera: http://www.shadesoflife.net
Each time I complete four episodes I create a DVD with these four episodes on it for the cast. This DVD I'm working on is for episodes 92 through 95 and I'm adding chapter marks and scene indexes to the DVD. By using the DVDSP templates and the correct drop zones, this has been quite easy, except for the fact that I can't seem to get the video to import any more.
Actually I got three of my four episodes to import just fine. These were exported from FCP as stand-alone QT movies and included chapter marks. Episode 94 would never finish the background compression step when importing into the DVDSP project as an asset.
Because of the suggestions I read in other articles in this discussion group about this kind of problem, I deleted the episode 94 audio and video assets from the project along with all menus which referenced them. I then started Compressor and transcoded the Episode 94 stand-alone QT movie and got these two files as a result:
"SOL-094-DVD PCM Audio-.aiff"
"SOL-094-MPEG-2 60 min Fast Encode-.m2v"
Next I imported these assets into the DVDSP project and used them to build the menus. This went smoothly. But, when I run the DVD simulation in DVDSP, episode 94 shows serious artifacts which render it unwatchable.
QUESTIONS: What Compressor encoding settings should I be using? What is the meaning of "60 min" and "120 min" in the encode settings? If I use a "120 min" setting will the file be bigger or smaller?
As I set here after reading the similar problems people have posted and the solutions and work-arounds people have suggested I see that a number of processes are not responding, according to the activity monitor. Generally this means that something is broken, but what. After rebooting OS X, running Compressor and then DVDSP I see the following processes that are not responding:
- compressor
- coreaudiod
- DSPX_AEncoderServer
- DSPX_EncoderServer
- two copies of MediaServer
When I exit DVDSP all but the top two disappear. What is "not responding" a symptom of?
I could sure use some help here. Thanks.
Peace,
Rob:-]

Same here :
It seems this problem started after updating QuickTime Player 7.0.2
when I open the Simulator in DVD 3.0.2 I can see (in Activity Monitor) 2 processes coming up : DSPX_AEncoderServer and DSPX_Encoder.
Instantly they turn red and get (Hung) added.

• Compressor on Intel Macs create byte reversed AC3 files

A co-vendor's MUXing application is unable to recognize my .ac3 file created by Compressor. I have a file inspection application from Manzanita Systems that also fails to recognize the .ac3 file.
I found this on the web:
- - - - - - - - - - - QUOTE - - - - - - - - - - -
another user had a problem with an AC3 recently as well. In that case the file was created with a wrong (well, it's not actually wrong but it's unusual for Intel PCs) byte order which makes it impossible for ProEx to handle the file. DVD Studio Pro sees it just fine.
If you've got a hex viewer you could find out by yourself. The first two bytes of an AC3 must be 0B 77. If they are shown the other way around then the byte order has to be changed.
- - - - - - - - - - - QUOTE - - - - - - - - - - -
I looked at my .ac3 file with a hex editor and it starts with 77 0B.
Then I looked at an .ac3 file that I created with Compressor on a G5 in back in October '06. It began with 0B 77. It was also recognized by Manzanita's MPEG-ID application.
I can't find anything on Apple's website regarding this issue. No Knowledge Base article; no update; nothing.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?
Anyone using the latest version of Compressor on an Intel based Mac to create AC3 files having problems sending them out to people who are NOT using DVD Studio Pro to handle the files further?
THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED NOW.
AND...

MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4) + stuff
PBG4 Mac OS X (10.4)

I'm afraid you're right.
I just created a brand new DVDSP test project. The three new files created with Compressor work. The same files that didn't work in the project where they were PPC created AC3 files.
I was lost in many possibilities, since I had also notice that if I go in DVD SP 4 Preferences, in "Simulator" (I'm french and I don't know its real name in english...) then in "output of player" (same for my french translation) in "Audio" and that I select "numerical output - sp/dif" I have no sound played. If I select "Integrated output" then I can hear back my ac3 created with Intel Compressor.
On this same computer, with my other project, AC3 PPC created or recently created on my Mac Pro with my old A.Pack software (from DVDStudio pro 2 or 3, I think), are read without difference between these two outputs.
Finally, Do you suggest me to re-encode all my files ? or should I use A.pack instead of Compressor - maybe Apple Developpers will correct it one day ?
I'm also upset because, I has a .DTS from a trailer that was accepted and perfectly integrated in my previous DVDSP version, and that I can't use anymore !

• SpeakHere and Simulator not working

I downloaded the SpeakHere app last night and tried running it with XCode 3.1.4 and Iphone Simulator 3.1 ( 139.1 ) on OSX 10.5.8. I can click the record button but I don't see any indication on the meter that it is receiving sound. I fired up garage band to ensure my built-in mic was working on my macbook pro and all was well. I even plugged in my iphone headphones and that worked in garage band as well but not with the SpeakHere app in the simulator.

1.) Delete DVD SP preferences
2.) Repair permissions
3.) Reinstall the App
Did simulator work before and stopped? Does this happen for one project or more than one project? Between this and the build issue in the other thread it may also be a corrupted asset somewhere. Are you encoding outside of DVD SP using Compressor or letting DVD SP encode? Usually better to encode outside of DVD SP

• URGENT: settings for Compressor - have motiion blur

HI
(I've posted this in FCP discussion as well) so I hope that is ok. Sorry I just need an answer quickly as time is running out for delivery.
I've just exported a FCP file through Compressor 2 and have some major problems with motion blur. I used the 2 pass VBR and it took 12 hours to export my hour long file - so I wasn't skimping on the quality (so I thought) I'm thinking is must be the settings!
I have to deliver this project in less than 24 hours and am getting nervous about the quality.
When I've done a quick export with quicktime and burnt with toast and there is no motion blur - so the standard settings in there must do something right - that I'm not doing in Comressor.
I need to know bit rates, field dominance, motion estimation, GOP, frame controls - everything really.
The project is DV PAL - 16:9
Thanks for your help in advance. We've litterally spent the last month getting this project perfect and now don't want to deliver it looking substandard in the last phase.
Cheers
margie

I know, I think the 12 hours was excessively long. It was all rendered out before I exported, so it's still a mystery.
It seems that the motion blur was only occuring during playback in the simulator of DVDSP! It was ok when I burnt it and played it back on the TV and when I played the DVD through the computers DVD player! So I don't know what that is, but all is ok.
I have another issue now in the final product. Some of the dissolves haven't come out very well at all. They are not transitioning well and grainy like.
When we were doing test burns, using a reference movie (export/quicktime/untick make movie self contained etc) and burnt through Toast, all was fine. so I know it is not the work done in FCP its the setings or something in Compressor.
I built and burnt the project through DVDSP and also took the build (Video TS folder) and burnt it thorugh Toast as well and got the same result! Very frustrating and now I have to deliver a sub standard product to my client for a launch tomorrow. They are burning off 50 copies for it. Very upsetting. But before they do the replication of 1000 I want to sort this out.
I'll post this same question in its own post so it doesn't get lost in here.
Thanks agin for your help.

• Simulation error: "Warning - Illegal angle situation"

Hi there,
I've just produced a three camera edit in FCP and I'm now trying to cut to DVD in Studio Pro.
I keep getting hit with the same message when trying "simulator". I have 13 chapters..all of which come up with this error when I try to skip to them.
"Warning: Illegal angle situation. Only the Main Video Angle will be simulated".
I've gone back into FCP and deleted all references to the "angles". I've exported onto tape and then recaptured..put back on the timeline and exported again..reimported into DVD Studio and it still appears.
I'm running out of ideas. Can anyone please help me?
Thanks in advance.
Carol Ann

Hi there,
Thanks for all your efforts here guys.
I'd say the "angle" issue is resolved...but now when I import the asset into DVD SP and try to put on timeline I'm getting the following error...
"Or or more clips could not be added to stream.
Incompatible GOP Structure. Last Valid Time Code at 00:00:00:00
I have exported using compressor and opted for MPEG2 option. I chose CBR one pass and ensured GOP was set to "closed". I thought if it was "closed" then it wouldn't look for that in DVD Studio but it still seems to. I'm trying just about every setting in compressor that I can find and basically I'm going nuts trying ot work it out.
Please don't give up on me

• General Question About Compressor Speed & Newer Macs

Hi,
I am considering buying a PowerMac G5/2.3 dual-processor. I currently have a G4/350 with a 1.2 Ghz Sonnet processor installed. My main intent is to speed up MPEG2 compression for DVDSP 4 at any encoding setting compared with what I have now. I usually leave this computer running overnight to encode without any other apps running. Typical video length is 1-2 hours.
Will I see a significant speed boost with the G5 and a comparable amount of ram or is it a waste of money? DVDSP simulation also looks choppy. Will that smooth out?
BTW, I have no interest in creating a cluster to hand off Compressor tasks, so that path will play no part in my decision. Thanks for any help.
James

You'll see a difference, for sure.
I work on a Dual 1.42 G4 tower but often visit a friend over at a local post house who works on a Dual 2.5 G5. His machine is significantly faster than mine - I'd say about 40% faster. (and yes, I say this having needed to work on Compressor on his machine)
Considering the greater horsepower difference in your scenario, you should be pretty happy.

• MPEG2 pan and tilt artifacts using Compressor

Is there away to improve my Compressor/DVD Studio Pro MPEG2 encoding. I had decided to switch to DVD Studio Pro in order to get a better
quality encode. I find that it looks better everywhere except where
there is a camera move. If the camera pans or tilts, I get horizontal lines in
the video and it looks like crap.
I've been encoding through compressor using these specs
DVD Best Quality 90 minutes/ALL
Field Dominance: Automatic
2 Pass VBR Best
Avg Bit Rate 6.2
Max Bit Rate 9.0
Motion Estimation BEST
My project is a HDV 1080-60i Final Cut Pro v5.1.4 project.
I have been exporting a MPEG 2 file through Compressor using v2.1
Have you ever come across this problem? And if so, have you found away
for Compressor to handle motion better? Or should do you let DVD
Studio Pro encode? Does it do a better job?
Thanks!

Hi:
I find that it looks better everywhere except where there is a camera move. If the camera pans or tilts, I get horizontal lines in the video and it looks like crap.
That's the nature of interlaced video. Where are you judging in: Playing the MPEG2 in QT? DVDSP simulator? Did you build a disc and tested it in DVD player?
Try making a build in your hard drive and play the VIDEO_TS folder with DVD Player and set it to Deinterlace.
Hope that helps !

• How to account for shifts and time zone differences in an EPC simulation?

BPA EPC Simulation results add up processing times and wait times, without regard to shifts or time zone differences between tasks. Does anyone have a technique to deal with shift work or time zone differences? For instance if a task takes 6 hours to complete, the worker can do it in one shift if the task is received within the first two hours. However, if the task arrived near the end of the work day, the worker may work on it for the balance of the shift and then continue the work the next day. The value of a Static Wait Times then depends on when the task is received by the worker. Any ideas on how to realistically model this?
Similarly, if workers pass tasks between them in difference time zones, static wait times may or may not accurately reflect the impact on thru put time. Any ideas on modeling this?
thanks
Rodger Martin

Thanks Michael -- you've helped me with the project before (back in May of this year).
I started this project as a newby back in 2010 and was a bit overwhelmed (i.e. just happy to get everything into FCP and be able to edit.)
I'll try the media manage solution, but if that doesn't work I think I'll live with the one-frame drift. I'm assuming
the only other alternative would be to go back to all the original video and audio files; transcode using Compressor, and then re-synch with Plural Eyes and go back in to match up the edits?
Thanks to your continuing help, I should know how to set things up correctly from the get go for the next one!

• Exporting to DVD via compressor and DVDSP - fixing poor quality dissolves

Hi,
Im having real problems with the quality of the dissolves when exporting my 59min project out of FCP, into Compressor and then into DVDSP. I exported it out to Compressor 2, used DVD best quality, 90 min, 16:9 (project is for PAL) , had the bit rate 6.5 - 7.5 etc. In the finished product the dissolves are grainy and really noticeable during the transition of 1 sec.
When we were doing test burns, using a reference movie (export/quicktime/untick make movie self contained etc) and burnt through Toast, all was fine. so I know it is not the work done in FCP its the settings or something in Compressor or something in DVDSP? Not sure.
Is there another way to get my project out of FCP and into Compressor? For example is it possbile to export a Quicktime and full quality? I've never done this and was wondering if it is an option.
Hope you can help.
Thanks.

You can modify the encoding settings in the DVDSP Preferences menu. There's a tab at the far right labeled "Encoding".
Just to confim - when I import the QT file into DVDSP, do I then just drag it onto the timeline as you would with the M2V file? Then just drag in the AC3 audio file.
Yes.
Then do I do a 'Build' in DVDSP to get the Video TS folder? Do you normally burn then through the DVDSP or burn in Toast for example.
I normally build to my secondary internal drive first and open that folder with DVD Player, just to make sure I connected everything properly. I prefer to check my project in DVD Player rather than use the built-in simulator, primarily because I can then fast forward my tracks to make sure my jump points and buttons work.
When I'm ready to burn a disc, I burn directly from DVDSP.
